FAIR OAKS FARMS AND THE LITTLE RED SMOKEHOUSE Thursday, Nov. 4, 7 p.m.
Come hear about Fair Oaks Farms and the other ventures of Swedish cheesemaker Sven Mill. Located in northwest Indiana, Fair Oaks Farms is owned by nine local dairy farm families. Since he arrived at Fair Oaks, Sven has been putting his talents to use, most notably with his famous Royal Blue Cheese. Sven is from Grythyttan, Sweden, and for many years he delivered a buffet to His Royal Highness the King of Sweden in celebration of Swedish National Day. Sven is also one of the contributing authors to the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) cookbook, “For the Love of Food.”
Following the talk there will be a sampling of appetizers from some of the farms’ products, along with a wine tasting. Cost: $20 members, $25 non-members. Reservations are recommended. |

Ever wonder what it would be like to spend the night in a Museum? Come and see at our first ever, Museum Dreaming! Guests will enjoy dinner, crafts, games, adventures, and breakfast, all while the Museum is closed to the public. Geared for children ages 5 and up; children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Guests are required to provide their own bedding.

SWEDISH CANDLE MAKING AND CHRISTMAS CRAFT WORKSHOP Tuesday, Nov. 16, 7 p.m.
Candle making has a strong tradition in Sweden. With the long, dark winter nights, candles were essential for lighting and are associated with many of the oldest festivals. Light up the winter by making hand-dipped candles. Additionally, we will create paper heart baskets and Christmas ornaments. You will also learn how to make a traditional Swedish Christmas treat. Bring a pair of sharp scissors. Coffee and bullar will be served.

A DREAM OF AMERICA – SWEDISH IMMIGRATION TO CHICAGO
Guided tours will be held at 11 a.m. on the third Sunday of September, the last Saturday of October, and the third Saturday of November (Sept. 19, Oct. 30, and Nov. 20).
Veronica Robinson, Museum curator, will conduct the tour. This fascinating tour starts in the mid-1800s in Sweden and takes the viewer on a journey from Sweden to the New World, providing insights into the struggles and triumphs of Swedish immigrant life in Chicago. We meet Stina Olof’s daughter, whose brother is leaving Sweden with his family in 1868, Karl Karlsson and his family who emigrated in 1893, and Elin and Birgitta Hedman, who arrived at Ellis Island in 1924.
Cost for the tour is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and students. Members are free. Reservations are recommended. |
