April 25, 2010 - 1:00 pmLecture: "The Colorful Role of Reservation Trading Posts" Mitchell Museum of the American Indian 3001 Central Street, Evanston, Ill. |
Deborah Begner of Turkey Mountain Traders, Scottsdale, Ariz., will discuss how trading posts functioned on American Indian reservations from the late 1800s through the mid-20th century and their impact on Native arts at a presentation.
In her talk, “The Colorful Role of Reservation Trading Posts,” Begner will explain how the trading post served as a link to the outside world and an economic and financial hub for residents of isolated Indian reservations. In addition to serving as neighborhood banker and general store proprietor, the reservation trader also acted as marketing advisor and sales representative for local artists, promoting their work and finding markets for it in major cities far from the reservation.
Some traders encouraged artists to work with materials and designs they felt would appeal to buyers. “Certain styles of rugs were named for the trading post where they were prevalent,” Begner said in an interview with the Mitchell. Begner has nearly two decades of experience buying and selling Native American art, principally antique Navajo and Zuni jewelry and jewelry by Southwest masters of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.
Turkey Mountain Traders will be showing and selling Southwest Native antique jewelry from noon to 4 p.m. that day at the Mitchell, with prices ranging from $125 for a pair of earrings to several thousand dollars for larger pieces. A percentage of the sales proceeds will benefit the Mitchell, an independent, nonprofit museum. |

April 24, 2010 - 10:00 am - 2:00 pmNative Art Appraisal Day Mitchell Museum of the American Indian 3001 Central Street, Evanston, Ill. 60201 |
Collectors of Native American art and craftwork can receive informal appraisals of their items. A team of outside experts, including professional traders, will provide oral appraisals for a fee of $20 for the first item and $10 for each additional item. Fees for Mitchell Museum members are $15 and $10. All fees will benefit the Mitchell, an independent, nonprofit museum.
Among the appraisers will be Deborah and Tom Begner of Turkey Mountain Traders, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Santa Fe, N.M.; Jim DeNomie (Bad River Chippewa); Frances L. Hagemann (Ojibwe/Métis); Native art collectors Allan and Joyce Niederman; and Eliot Waldman of Native Art Traders, Skokie, Ill.
The appraisers can assess a wide range of Native materials, including items from the Woodlands, Northwest Coast, and other cultural areas. The Begners have nearly two decades of experience buying and selling Native American art, principally antique Navajo and Zuni jewelry and jewelry by Southwest masters of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Waldman, who began collecting Inuit art in the 1970s, specializes in Alaskan Native and Canadian Inuit art and has been traveling to the far north for a decade to find pieces for his gallery. In appraising Native American art, Deborah Begner says criteria include the quality of workmanship and materials, craft techniques employed, age and relative scarcity of the piece, and patterns of wear, among other considerations. She also examines the item’s “hallmark,” typically the artist’s initials or a unique pictograph.
Throughout the day and also on Sunday, April 25, Turkey Mountain Traders will be showing and selling Southwest Native antique jewelry, with prices ranging from $125 for a pair of earrings to several thousand dollars for larger pieces. A percentage of the sales proceeds will benefit the Mitchell.
Appraisal fees are in addition to museum general admission, which is $5 for adults, $2.50 for seniors, students, teachers (with valid school ID), and children. Maximum admission per family is $10. Admission is free for Mitchell members and tribal members. |
