June 11, 2010 - July 11, 2010 - 6:00 pmBloomsday Celebrations Irish American Heritage Center 4626 North Knox Avenue, Chicago, IL 60630 |
Celebrate the life and work of writer James Joyce with the Irish American Heritage Center’s annual Bloomsday Celebrations this June. On June 16, 1904, writer James Joyce met his future wife, Nora Barnacle and immortalized the date in his monumental epic, Ulysses. Modern Joyce aficionados have denoted June 16 "Bloomsday"; a day set aside throughout the world to honor the great man and his controversial and thought-provoking works. The 11th annual Rattlin’ of the Joists will be held on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at 7:30pm in the Fifth Province. The event includes performances with staged readings, music and song, presented by notables from Chicago’s theatre and music community, including actor Vera Kelly and Tenor Mark Piekarz. Josephine Craven directs. After the performance, stop by the Art Gallery for a short presentation on the relationship between Joyce and the film director Sergei Eisenstein entitled Inner Monologue: James Joyce/Sergei Eisenstein. The presentation is in conjunction with the art exhibit, 30 views of Ulysses, by Chicago artist, Leonid Osseny.
Tickets for the Rattlin’ of the Joists are $10 and can be purchased at the door. In conjunction with the performance the IAHC Art Gallery will host an art exhibit on Joyce. Leonid Osseny:30 views of Ulysses is a an art exhibit of 30 digital images on archival paper by award-winning Skokie artist and architect, Leonid Osseny. Osseny was born in Russia in 1948. His reading of James Joyce’s Ulysses and his other graphic works are informed by the compositional school of Sergey Eisenstein, who made use of the device of “inner monologue” to convey his ideas. Studying the works of Eisenstein in film, art and architecture gave him the necessary background to begin the illustrations for Joyce’s novel. Osseny’s work was recognized with exhibitions nationally and internationally in 2001 at the North American James Joyce Conference at the University of California at Berkeley, at the 19th International James Joyce Symposium, The National College of Ireland, in Dublin in 2004, and most recently with the publication of his art in the Joyce Studies Annual (Fordham University Press, New York). Leonid Osseny:30 views of Ulysses runs from Friday, June 11 to Sunday, July 11.
Gallery hours are Saturday and Sundays from 1pm to 4pm, with a free opening reception on Friday, June 11, from 6pm to 9pm.
Some events are free, some are $10.
Note: The exhibit will run during the IAHC’s Irish Fest from July 9-11, but there is an admission charge to enter the festival. For more information on Irish Fest, visit www.irishfestchicago.com.

June 16, 2010The Scottish Business Forum hosts luncheon with Professor David Bell, University of Stirling Union Leauge Club 65 W Jackson Blvd Chicago |
Born in Inverness, David has very strong Highland roots. He was educated at the University of Aberdeen and the London School of Economics where he studied economics and econometrics. His career has taken him to a number of universities including St Andrews, Strathclyde, Warwick and Glasgow. His main interests are labor economics, the economics of social care, public finance and the Scottish economy.
He has written many academic papers and is a regular contributor to media on topics relating to the Scottish economy. He is regularly featured in the Scotsman, Scotland on Sunday and the Sunday Herald. He also makes frequent television appearances, particularly on BBC Newsnight Scotland.
Professor Bell advises the Finance Committee of the Scottish Parliament, on the efficient spending of taxpayers money. Inevitably this takes him close to the major political issues, but he avoids specific political affiliation.
Recently Professor Bell has been involved, not just in Scotland, but also at a UK level in providing advice and information on the recession and its consequences. The events of the last two years present Scotland with many challenges - particularly in respect of repairing the economy and the public finances.
For some light relief from financial matters, David and his wife Dorrie spend time in their native Dornoch, Sutherland. He has been a lifetime golfer and is a member of Royal Dornoch Golf Club, one of great links courses in the world, and the birthplace of Donald Ross, the great US golf course architect.

June 1, 2010 - September 1, 2010RETRO/INTRO/SPECTIVES by Elizam Escobar Institute of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture 3015 West Division Street |
This exhibit is a combination of a previous installation at Polvo in June of 2006 and the elaboration of new words which are also a series of combining techniques that intertwine with earlier works, documents and mixed images to form a whole of coming and goings between that two-decade long period of imprisonment and the subsequent works from a decade that feels like two.
The installation started from a series of drawings I did in prison about jail bars transmuting into sculptures. From there, constructions, mixed media and three-dimensional works emerged. The "extension" of those pieces has taken different, but limited, forms, due to the issue of transportation. The new works have trace marks of both before and after the installation, which makes it hard to know what came before and what came after.
Here there is a type of self-intervention and variations where there are transferences and painting over transparencies, documents and reproductions altered in scale and context, sequences, series, and digital pieces. The theme of jail bars and the prison experience have imposed an autobiographical and political atmosphere, but always through the symbolic of art as an exchange between spectators and the work.
Buen aprovecho. |

June 19, 2010 - June 20, 2010 - 11:00 amNative American Jewelry Trading Days Mitchell Museum of the American Indian 3001 Central St., Evanston, IL 60201 |
| The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian in Evanston will host its eleventh annual “Native American Jewelry Trading Days” June 19–20 for shoppers looking for bargains on authentic, previously owned Native American jewelry. Twenty-five percent of the sale proceeds will benefit the independent nonprofit Mitchell Museum, 3001 Central St., Evanston, where museum volunteers will be staffing the display tables Saturday, June 19, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, June 20, noon to 3 p.m. Mitchell Museum members can attend a private preview party Friday, June 18, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission to the members-only preview and sale is $25 per person. Anyone wishing to have their Native American jewelry sold at the event should contact the museum at 847-475-1030 no later than June 10. All sale items must be Native-made and are accepted on consignment by prior arrangement, not on a walk-in basis. (Nothing is actually “traded” or bartered during the event. Purchases are made by cash or credit card.) “Many people have beautiful earrings, bracelets, and other items that they no longer wear or don't suit their taste anymore,” says Sarabess Cahill, a museum board member who is helping coordinate the event. “This gives them a perfect opportunity to sell those pieces, buy someone else's treasures, and benefit the museum at the same time." Organizers say hundreds of pieces of previously owned Native jewelry will be available for purchase, including rings, pins, bolos, earrings, belt buckles, pendants, bracelets, and necklaces. Prices typically range from $15 to $600 or more, with most items priced from $30 to $60. Most of the jewelry dates from about 1940 to the present day. Designs range from traditional to contemporary. “These are excellent values,” Cahill says. “We've asked sellers to set the lowest prices they're willing to accept.” Admission to the event is included with museum admission. Admission fees are $5 for adults; $2.50 for seniors, students, teachers with valid school ID, and children. Admission is free for Mitchell members and tribal members. Maximum admission per family is $10. From May 28 to September 6, active members of the military and their immediate families also are admitted free through the Mitchell’s participation in the national Blue Star Museums program. For information, phone (847) 475-1030 or e-mail visitorservices@mitchellmuseum.org. |

June 25, 2010 - July 25, 2010 - 11:00 am - 4:00 pmAROUND THE WORLD IN 36 FRAMES The Polish Museum of America 984 N. Milwaukee Ave., IL. 60642 |
Opening on Friday June 25, 2010 7 p.m.- 9 p.m.
Imagine a camera, with enough film for 36 shots, making its way to 36 cities around the globe and at every stop, one person takes just one shot. This traveling camera is the invention of photographer, Wojtek Gil, whose belief that a moment of life captured in Sao Paulo might not look all that different from one captured in Osaka, comes to life in this innovative project. The camera spent several days with each participant who photographed an image that struck him or her, adding a note about the shot before forwarding the 35mm Lomo Action Sampler to its destination. Gil’s project is his contribution to today’s global experience – a literal and figurative snapshot from the unique and collective perspectives of the participants who have chosen to take this journey with him. |
