SUMMARY:2023 Members Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Over 36 years ago members of the Irish American Community had a vision to create a place that would hold the spirit of the past\, the energy of the present and to keep their culture alive for the future. This non-for-profit organization brings the best in artistic avenues\, and arts are an important part of the Irish dialog. SUMMARY:Aesthetics of Loss
DESCRIPTION:AESTHETICS OF LOSS is a collection of work by seven artists who have experienced loss of family members recently. Their studios became places for grieving and understanding the sudden vacuum of losing loved ones either suddenly or over a long period of illness. Caregiving\, memory\, helplessness\, loss and the ultimate mystery of death are explored through painting\, print-making\, fibers\, ceramics\, photography\, installation and video. Some artists utilize objects and clothing left behind by their loved ones and transform them into artworks and some use ritual and natural materials as memorial or commemorative actions of grieving and coming to terms. \nEbti is a multidisciplinary artist\, a self-taught photographer and a translator living between Cairo and San Francisco. She received her MFA in Fine Art from the California College of the Arts in 2021. Her practice is informed by languages\, theater\, literature\, music and her family’s making-traditions she never got to learn. Through this multi- faceted\, dislocated lens she looks at the ideas of home\, belonging\, and attachment. Though her work is rooted in photography\, she is constantly looking for new materials and methods that will best translate her ideas. Once she starts working on a project\, she embraces notions of accident and failure. Her practice is ever-evolving and is influenced by her restlessness. \nCassidy Early (b. 1994\, Worcester\, MA) is a nonbinary Scottish American artist living and working in Chicago\, IL. They graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a MFA in Painting in 2020 and received their BFA from Boston University’s College of Fine Arts in 2016. Early’s work has been featured in a solo exhibition with Lauren Powell Projects\, (Los Angeles\, CA)\, a three person exhibition with Olympia (New York\, NY)\, and larger group exhibitions with La Loma Projects (Pasadena\, CA)\, Green Gallery (Milwaukee\, WI)\, The Salon at The Wing Chicago (Chicago\, IL)\, and in I Like Your Work\, Podcast. Their work has been published alongside Garth Green- well’s essay Making Meaning: Against Relevance in Art in Harper’s Magazine (Nov. 2020)\, and as the LVL3 Artist of the Week (Nov. 2020). \nBrianna L. Hernández is a Chicana artist\, curator\, educator\, and death doula guided by socially-engaged values. In developing as an artist\, Brianna credits her late mother\, Sylvia D. Hernández\, as her most significant mentor. Brianna’s studio practice focuses on end-of-life care\, grieving processes\, and mourning rituals based on lived experience\, cultural research\, and collaborations with peers. In addition to formal artworks\, she offers workshops or viewers to self-educate on grief and end-of-life planning through the safety of the creative process. As a curator\, Brianna works with artists to make socially-charged topics publicly accessible in order to create opportunities for education and empathy. She also collaborates with community health researchers to incorporate the arts into public health projects through curatorial consulting. Brianna proudly serves as Director of Curation and Board Secretary at Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton\, New York. \nLinda b. Marcus (b. 1961\, Los Angeles\, California) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. Drawing on her long history as a storyteller in journalism and fashion\, Marcus now focuses on fiber\, sculpture and photography. Marcus’s work has been exhibited widely in Wisconsin including the Museum of Wisconsin Art\, The Trout Museum\, the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and fiber arts and the Charles Allis Museum as well as numerousgalleries and in several publications. Marcus is currently pursuing her MFA at the School of The Art Institute in Chicago\, Illinois. Marcus has been awarded several residencies including on at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Currently\, Marcus is the creative director for the Saint Kate Arts hotel in Milwaukee where she continues to push the limits of contemporary art and provide a platform for other artists. \nJessica Meuninck-Ganger’s prints\, artist’s books and large-scale hybrid media works have been exhibited in museums and both experimental and commercial galleries regionally\, nationally and internationally. Her art is included in several private and public collections\, including the Weisman Museum of Art\, Marcus Corporation (Saint Kate Arts Hotel)\, Northwestern Mutual\, Target Corporation\, and in contemporary publications\, such as Andrea Ferber’s\, Sustenance: Contemporary Printmaking Now\, Richard Noyce’s\, Printmaking Beyond the Edge\, and Nathaniel Stern’s\, Interactive Art and Embodiment: The Implicit Body as Performance. Jessica earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education from Ball State University\, Muncie\, Indiana and MFA in Studio Arts from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design\, Minneapolis\, Minnesota. She is currently the Print and Narrative Forms Area Head and Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, USA. \nNirmal Raja is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Milwaukee. She had lived in India\, South Korea\, and Hong Kong before immigrating to the United States thirty-two years ago. She holds a BA in English Literature from St. Francis College in Hyderabad\, India; a BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design\, and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. She has participated in solo and group shows in the Midwest\, nationally\, and internationally. She is the recipient of several awards including Graduate of The Decade from the University of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee. Raja received the Mary L. Nohl Fellowship for individual artists for the year 2020 and the Mildred L. Harpole Artists of the Year 2022 award from the Milwaukee Arts Board. She collaborates with other artists and strongly believes in investing energy into her immediate community while also considering the global. She is a mentor for the Milwaukee Artists Resource Network’s mentorship program. She periodically curates exhibitions that bring people from different cultures and backgrounds together. Raja is represented by Portrait Society Gallery in Milwaukee. \nAnders Zanichkowsky is a transgender artist from the Midwest. They have had residencies with The Arctic Circle sailing expedition in Svalbard\, Røst AiR in Sápmi/Norway\, and the Chicago Park District’s Cultural Asset Mapping Project. Their work has been exhibited across the United States\, Europe\, and Australia\, including the Wisconsin Film Festival. Anders has received awards for their studio practice\, public art projects\, and international research\, including a SPARK grant from the Chicago Artists Coalition and a Temkin Award for their MFA thesis show\, You Are Running Into Danger. Anders has an MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2019) and a BA from Hampshire College (2008).

The artist’s activities to popularize the fashion design field and expand the range of expression through the development of convergent expression techniques of fashion illustration show the expansion of fashion artistry and the borderless development of the fashion industry. \nK-Fashion is expressed in various areas. In this work\, the artist expanded the artistic range of globalized K-Fashion and the experimental expression of ideas. In particular\, we want to show how quickly Korean fashion is permeating into global fashion through ‘Saekdong’\, a representative color and pattern of Korean traditional fashion. In addition\, by designing a part of Hangeul\, which is expressed in minimal ‘figure painting’\, along with ‘Saekdong’\, a traditional Korean stripe pattern\, it shows the refined and minimalism of K-Fashion in Korean colors. \nThe artist used hand stitches and hand drawings expressed on Korean traditional fabrics with handcrafted analog techniques\, that shows a convergence of expressions using digital programs together to emphasize formative characteristics. Through this\, a new direction of fashion illustration expression was created and the scope of research related to fashion illustration was expanded. It will also be a special exhibition that expands the realm of K-Fashion design expression suitable for use in the global fashion industry.

DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibit:\nThe Spotlight Series at the Chinese American Museum of Chicago is pleased to present UNITY\, Maggie Wong’s first solo exhibition in Chicago. \nThrough various manipulations of newsprint via sculptural and print interventions pulled from the artist’s collection of Unity Newspaper\, the show depicts a version of childcare that supported revolutionary action\, particularly the publishing of Unity by the League of Revolutionary Struggle\, a radical communist group that emerged in 1978 upon the merger between the August 29th Movement\, a Chicano revolutionary organization\, and I Wor Kuen\, an Asian American revolutionary organization\, both influenced by Mao and followed Marxist-Leninist thought. \nThis system is what raised the artist and countless other now-grown adults that now serves as a point of departure to feel through a movement as a mothering environment. \nAbout the Artist:\nMaggie Wong (b.1988\, Oakland\, CA) is a visual artist attuned to materiality and sculpture’s disciplinary capacity to shape social space. She creates multidisciplinary works that focus on care labor\, sentimentality\, and collectivity. As a teacher. Maggie is interested in the interplay between informal and experiential education amidst formal art ecologies. She holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). She is currently the Educator-in-Residence at the Luminary\, and lecturer at SAIC. Her work has been shown at Mana Contemporary Chicago\, Comfort Station\, Annas Projects\, take care (LA)\, Temple Contemporary\, YBCA\, and 99cent Plus\, and has been written about in ArtForum and Sixty Inches from Center. Her writing has been published by Yale University Press\, Viral Ecologies\, and the Journal of Art Practice.

SUMMARY:The Negro Motorist Green Book
DESCRIPTION:“The Negro Motorist Green Book” guided Black Americans to thousands of businesses for over thirty years. When the first “Green Book” was published\, the American road was a metaphor for freedom: freedom to change your present situation\, determine your destiny\, and travel. Yet\, in 20th-century America\, this same road was a dangerous place for Black travelers. The land was divided by segregation — through policy and through custom. For Black people\, the prejudice was severe: a systematic effort to deny their basic human rights. In an era of Jim Crow laws and “sundown towns\,” communities that explicitly prohibited Black travelers from staying overnight\, the “Green Book” offered critical\, life-saving information and sanctuary. \nNow\, through The Negro Motorist Green Book\, visitors will explore film\, photographs\, interactives\, and oral histories from travelers and “Green Book” business owners; compare “Green Book” sites then and now; and appreciate historical objects from the Smithsonian and from a variety of “Green Book” sites. The exhibition includes artifacts from business signs and postcards to historic footage\, images\, and firsthand accounts that illustrate not just the apprehension felt by Black travelers\, but also the resilience\, innovation\, and elegance of people choosing to live a full American existence. \nDeveloped by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) in collaboration with award-winning author\, photographer\, and cultural documentarian\, Candacy Taylor\, Green Book offers an immersive look at the historic reality of travel for Black Americans and how the guide served as an indispensable resource for the rise of the Black leisure class in the United States. The exhibition highlights destinations created by Black Americans and strategies that affirmed their humanity\, their worth\, their light\, and their lives – and how it was done with ingenuity\, community\, and with help from Victor Green and his travel guide: “The Negro Motorist Green Book.”

DESCRIPTION:Eleven artists with ties to North and South of the Mason-Dixon Line respond to just how much Black life has always been in transit. \n  \nThe Great Migration was one of the largest movements of people in United States history. It has transformed cities like Chicago\, Detroit\, New York and Pittsburgh between 1916 and 1970. Chicago received more than 500\,000 Black Southern Americans during this time.\n  \nTo Southern Blacks\, Chicago was considered the “Promised Land”. Stories of big city life — jobs with good wages\, homes with running water\, and basic freedoms denied to Blacks in the South — made the Northern city a prime destination for Blacks coming from below the Mason-Dixon line. As the most documented migration in US history\, photographers like Gordon Parks\, Florestine Perrault Collins\, Moneta Sleet Jr.\, Roy DeCarava\, and Coreen Simpson created imagery that demonstrated Black life in movement.\n\nToday\, contemporary artists and image makers respond to the many migrations of African Diaspora peoples and the influences of these movements in their work.

DESCRIPTION:He was born in Żywiec\, Poland. He studied at the Faculty of Graphic Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (the Katowice branch). He received a diploma with honours in 2001 from the Studio of Industrial Design supervised by Professor Jerzy Wuttke. In 2010\, he was conferred the degree of doctor of fine arts\, and in 2018 – the degree of habilitated doctor. In 2004\, he began working in the Department of Design as an assistant at the Drawing and Painting Studio supervised by Professor Jan Dubiel. Since 2015\, he has held the position of head of the Visual Arts Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. He also teaches drawing and painting at the University of Technology in Katowice and the Drawing and Graphics Studio at the Municipal Cultural Centre in Jastrzębie-Zdrój. He is the co-author of numerous polychrome works in churches. He has taken part in about 100 collective exhibitions in Poland and abroad and has had 24 individual exhibitions. He has also participated in several plein-air and post-plein-air exhibitions and numerous competitions and post-competition exhibitions

SUMMARY:Art After Work: Marvin Tate
DESCRIPTION:Join Intuit for Art After Work\, a free series of facilitated art-making workshops inspired by outsider and self-taught art and artists from the museum’s collections and exhibitions. This month\, Chicago-based multidisciplinary artist and educator Marvin Tate will facilitate a workshop inspired by one of his pastimes: birdwatching. In the in-person workshop titled “Come Fly With Me\,” participants will make an artful bird from found objects. \n\n\n\n\nMaterials at Intuit \n\nWire clothing hangers\nPlastic forks\nString in various colors\nPainters tape in various colors\nCotton balls\nBeads\nHot glue\n\nArt After Work is for everyone\, including beginners and people who say they “are not artists.” We can all be artists! Pulaski Rd.\nNEWS RELEASE:\nFrom Meat Packers and Coal Miners to Nation Builders: How Lithuanian American immigrants helped their beleaguered homeland achieve freedom\, independence\, and U.S. recognition a century ago\nChicago\, Oct. 22\, 2022 — Lithuanian American contributions to Lithuania’s freedom\, independence and diplomatic recognition by the United States is the subject of “Lithuania in 1922\,” a symposium at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in Chicago on Saturday\, November 12\, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. \nThese first-wave immigrants\, many of humble beginnings\, who toiled in Pennsylvania and Illinois coal mines\, East Coast factories\, and Midwestern farms — the so-called “big shoulders” of Chicago’s stockyards and steel mills — heeded the call of their beleaguered homeland and helped lift it from over a century of Russian subjugation and oppression. \nTheir actions were pivotal to the success of Lithuania’s independence struggle in 1918 and to the United States’ de jure recognition of Lithuanian statehood in 1922. In effect\, they helped lay the cornerstone for the freedom and democracy Lithuania enjoys today. \nThe aspirations\, tactics\, and accomplishments of Lithuanian Americans then hold many lessons for our own turbulent times\, according to Irena Brokas Chambers\, curator of the Balzekas Museum’s For Freedom about Lithuanian American support of Lithuania’s struggle for independence and freedom and No Home To Go To exhibitions about World War II Baltic refugees. \n“What Lithuanian Americans did was not only pivotal to Lithuania’s struggle for freedom\,” said Chambers\, in her presentation to the American Association of Baltic Studies conference in Seattle this past May. “Their success in gaining independence and [U.S.] recognition is a singular exemplar of what must be done in the continuing struggle to end oppression and champion freedom throughout the world.” \nFormerly the curator of collections at the Library of Congress\, Chambers will present “A Case for Lost Causes: Lithuanian American Support of Freedom\, Independence\, and Recognition for their Ancestral Homeland” at the November 12 symposium. \n“Lithuanian Americans’ Final Contribution to the Recognition of Lithuania by the United States on July 28\, 1922” is the subject of a presentation by guest scholar Piotr Szlaužys\, a PhD candidate from the Institute of History and Political Sciences at the University of Białystok\, Poland. His research interests include Lithuanian Americans’ efforts towards U.S.’ recognition of Lithuania after World War I\, U.S. policy towards the Baltic States from 1918 to 1922\, and Lithuanian immigration to the U.S. in the 19th and 20th centuries. \nOther presenters include Balzekas Museum film consultant\, filmmaker Arvydas Reneckis\, who will discuss and share sourced material including archival film footage\, photographs\, and interviews\, for his current project\, Lithuanian Americans: Envoys of Nation\, a film premiering in 2023\, and his recent film about the Lithuanian Liberty Bell\, a gift of Lithuanian Americans to their ancestral homeland\, also in 1922. \nGuest speaker Ramunė Račkauskas\, granddaughter of Lithuania’s second president\, Aleksandras Stulginskis\, who was in office when U.S. President Warren B. Harding conferred de jure diplomatic recognition to Lithuania\, Latvia\, and Estonia on July 28\,1922. She will speak about President Stulginskis’s term and his legacy. The Museum’s numismatic exhibitions curator\, Frank Passic\, will speak about the history of the Litas\, Lithuania’s first unit of currency\, introduced in 1922. \nSymposium attendees will have an opportunity to numismatic collections\, the For Freedom exhibition\, and other related items of the period in the Museum’s collections and exhibitions. Of special interest is “The Ploughman” (1922)\, Lithuanian sculptor Petras Rimša’s iconic bronze sculpture\, symbolizing the spirit of the Lithuania nation and its resilience and resolve—then and now—in setting the course for Lithuania’s future. DESCRIPTION:The Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) is excited to announce the fifth exhibition of the Spotlight Series\, featuring artist Guanyu Xu. Please join us on Saturday\, November 5\, from 3pm-6pm CT for the opening reception.\nIn a new body of work centered on an imperial robe on display in the museum\, Chinatown\, and the New York Times repeated coverage of COVID featuring Asian faces\, photographer Guanyu Xu challenges the viewer to reconsider the parallel instances of colonization\, objectification\, fetishization\, and racism in three temporalities. Guanyu Xu: to be seen will run from November 5 through December 17.\nThe Spotlight Series is a new initiative to showcase recent and past work by emerging and mid-career artists of Chinese descent locally. Curated by Larry Lee (Molar Productions)\, the project aims to introduce\, promote and celebrate the divergent artistic visions and experiences of being Chinese in America looking at and reflecting upon our relationship to contemporary visual culture to a wider audience within our community and Chicago.\n\nAbout the artist:\n徐冠宇 Guanyu Xu (b.1993 Beijing) is an artist currently based in Chicago and a lecturer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Influenced by the production of ideology in American visual culture and a conservative familial upbringing in China\, Xu’s practice extends from examining the production of power in photography to the question of personal freedom and its relationship to political regimes. He negotiates this from the perspective as a Chinese gay man. In his work\, Xu migrates between mediums like photography\, new media\, and installation. These movements operate similarly to his displaced and fractured identity.\nHe is the recipient of the Chicago DCASE Artist Grant (2022)\, CENTER Development Grant (2021)\, Hyéres International Festival Prize (2020)\, PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai Exposure Award (2020)\, Philadelphia Photo Arts Center Annual Competition (2019)\, Lensculture Emerging Talent Award (2019)\, and Kodak Film Photo Award (2019). He has received artist residencies including ACRE (Chicago\, IL)\, Light Work (Syracuse\, NY)\, and Latitude (Chicago\, IL). His works have been exhibited and screened internationally including the Aperture Foundation\, New York; International Center of Photography\, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago; New Orlean Museum of Art\, New Orleans; Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston; Wesleyan University\, Middletown; Fotomuseum Winterthur\, Switzerland; Mint Museum\, Charlotte; 36th Kasseler Dokfest\, Germany\, and others. His work can be found in public collections including San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art\, Harvard Art Museums\, Museum of Contemporary Photography Chicago\, and New Orleans Museum of Art. DESCRIPTION:The Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) is excited to host the last of two free public programs inspired by the Spotlight Series exhibition Yuge Zhou: Moon Drawings. The program is a sound performance by Kikù Hibino and Chien-An Yuan on Saturday\, October 15\, from 1pm-2:30pm CT\, a day before the closing of the exhibition. \nRegister here \nAbout the artists:\nJapanese-born Chicago-based sound artist Kikù Hibino produces electronic music that focuses on unusual rhythmic structure and melodies that are inspired by optical illusion and moiré patterns. From chamber music for media productions to digital micro sound for art installations\, he has collaborated internationally with a wide variety of artists and scholars. He’s a 2017 Individual Artist Grant recipient from Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs\, 2021 Outer Ear Artist in Residency at Experimental Sound Studio\, and 2021 nominee for Best Asian Entertainer at Chicago Music Awards. In 2021\, Kikù and his creative partner Gregory Bae launched S/N\, an electronic music concert series. \nChien-An Yuan is an interdisciplinary artist\, designer\, and educator based in Ann Arbor\, MI. Yuan runs 1473\, a record label specializing in improvisation\, electronics\, and collaboration. He is also a founding member of IS/LAND\, a performance collaborative comprised of AAPI movers\, artists\, and collaborators. His work has been featured in The New Yorker\, Chicago Tribune\, ArtSlant\, Huffington Post\, WNYC and many other arts and cultural platforms. \nChien-An Yuan and Kikù Hibino have performed and shown in cultural institutions widely. \nYuge Zhou is a Chinese born\, Chicago-based artist whose videos and installations addresses connections\, isolation and longing across natural and urban spaces as sites of shared dreams. Zhou has exhibited nationally and internationally in prominent art and public venues. Her new dance film “Love Letters” is currently shown as part of Art on theMART’s fall program\, a nightly public art projection onto the facade of the Merchandise Mart\, Chicago. Recent awards include Juried Award in the installation category at ArtPrize 2021\, Artist Fellowship Award in Media Arts from the Illinois Arts Council and Honorary Mention in the 2020 Prix Ars Electronica in Linz\, Austria.

SUMMARY:Journey Chicago: Global Indigenous Perspectives: From Turtle Island to Sápmi
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of Journey Chicago\, the Chicago Cultural Alliance’s annual citywide festival of cross-cultural events. \nThe program will be a panel discussion between a Sami person (Scandinavian Indigenous person) and a North American Indigenous person. The discussion will explore similarities and differences between the two panelists’ cultures\, and reflect on their individual experiences. The panel will be moderated by Josee Starr and followed by a Q&A with the audience. The panel will be hosted within the exhibit space for Sami Dreams\, a photography exhibit displaying portraits of Sami people and their oral histories. The photographer\, Randall Hyman\, will be invited to participate in the panel as well and share his experience in capturing the photographs.
