DESCRIPTION:Join Intuit for Art After Work\, a free series of facilitated art-making workshops inspired by outsider and self-taught art and artists from the museum’s collections and exhibitions. This month\, Chicago-based multidisciplinary artist and educator Marvin Tate will facilitate a workshop inspired by one of his pastimes: birdwatching. In the in-person workshop titled “Come Fly With Me\,” participants will make an artful bird from found objects. \n\n\n\n\nMaterials at Intuit \n\nWire clothing hangers\nPlastic forks\nString in various colors\nPainters tape in various colors\nCotton balls\nBeads\nHot glue\n\nArt After Work is for everyone\, including beginners and people who say they “are not artists.” We can all be artists! Pulaski Rd.\nNEWS RELEASE:\nFrom Meat Packers and Coal Miners to Nation Builders: How Lithuanian American immigrants helped their beleaguered homeland achieve freedom\, independence\, and U.S. recognition a century ago\nChicago\, Oct. 22\, 2022 — Lithuanian American contributions to Lithuania’s freedom\, independence and diplomatic recognition by the United States is the subject of “Lithuania in 1922\,” a symposium at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in Chicago on Saturday\, November 12\, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. \nThese first-wave immigrants\, many of humble beginnings\, who toiled in Pennsylvania and Illinois coal mines\, East Coast factories\, and Midwestern farms — the so-called “big shoulders” of Chicago’s stockyards and steel mills — heeded the call of their beleaguered homeland and helped lift it from over a century of Russian subjugation and oppression. \nTheir actions were pivotal to the success of Lithuania’s independence struggle in 1918 and to the United States’ de jure recognition of Lithuanian statehood in 1922. In effect\, they helped lay the cornerstone for the freedom and democracy Lithuania enjoys today. \nThe aspirations\, tactics\, and accomplishments of Lithuanian Americans then hold many lessons for our own turbulent times\, according to Irena Brokas Chambers\, curator of the Balzekas Museum’s For Freedom about Lithuanian American support of Lithuania’s struggle for independence and freedom and No Home To Go To exhibitions about World War II Baltic refugees. \n“What Lithuanian Americans did was not only pivotal to Lithuania’s struggle for freedom\,” said Chambers\, in her presentation to the American Association of Baltic Studies conference in Seattle this past May. “Their success in gaining independence and [U.S.] recognition is a singular exemplar of what must be done in the continuing struggle to end oppression and champion freedom throughout the world.” \nFormerly the curator of collections at the Library of Congress\, Chambers will present “A Case for Lost Causes: Lithuanian American Support of Freedom\, Independence\, and Recognition for their Ancestral Homeland” at the November 12 symposium. \n“Lithuanian Americans’ Final Contribution to the Recognition of Lithuania by the United States on July 28\, 1922” is the subject of a presentation by guest scholar Piotr Szlaužys\, a PhD candidate from the Institute of History and Political Sciences at the University of Białystok\, Poland. His research interests include Lithuanian Americans’ efforts towards U.S.’ recognition of Lithuania after World War I\, U.S. policy towards the Baltic States from 1918 to 1922\, and Lithuanian immigration to the U.S. in the 19th and 20th centuries. \nOther presenters include Balzekas Museum film consultant\, filmmaker Arvydas Reneckis\, who will discuss and share sourced material including archival film footage\, photographs\, and interviews\, for his current project\, Lithuanian Americans: Envoys of Nation\, a film premiering in 2023\, and his recent film about the Lithuanian Liberty Bell\, a gift of Lithuanian Americans to their ancestral homeland\, also in 1922. \nGuest speaker Ramunė Račkauskas\, granddaughter of Lithuania’s second president\, Aleksandras Stulginskis\, who was in office when U.S. President Warren B. Harding conferred de jure diplomatic recognition to Lithuania\, Latvia\, and Estonia on July 28\,1922. She will speak about President Stulginskis’s term and his legacy. The Museum’s numismatic exhibitions curator\, Frank Passic\, will speak about the history of the Litas\, Lithuania’s first unit of currency\, introduced in 1922. \nSymposium attendees will have an opportunity to numismatic collections\, the For Freedom exhibition\, and other related items of the period in the Museum’s collections and exhibitions. Of special interest is “The Ploughman” (1922)\, Lithuanian sculptor Petras Rimša’s iconic bronze sculpture\, symbolizing the spirit of the Lithuania nation and its resilience and resolve—then and now—in setting the course for Lithuania’s future. DESCRIPTION:The Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) is excited to announce the fifth exhibition of the Spotlight Series\, featuring artist Guanyu Xu. Please join us on Saturday\, November 5\, from 3pm-6pm CT for the opening reception.\nIn a new body of work centered on an imperial robe on display in the museum\, Chinatown\, and the New York Times repeated coverage of COVID featuring Asian faces\, photographer Guanyu Xu challenges the viewer to reconsider the parallel instances of colonization\, objectification\, fetishization\, and racism in three temporalities. Guanyu Xu: to be seen will run from November 5 through December 17.\nThe Spotlight Series is a new initiative to showcase recent and past work by emerging and mid-career artists of Chinese descent locally. Curated by Larry Lee (Molar Productions)\, the project aims to introduce\, promote and celebrate the divergent artistic visions and experiences of being Chinese in America looking at and reflecting upon our relationship to contemporary visual culture to a wider audience within our community and Chicago.\n\nAbout the artist:\n徐冠宇 Guanyu Xu (b.1993 Beijing) is an artist currently based in Chicago and a lecturer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Influenced by the production of ideology in American visual culture and a conservative familial upbringing in China\, Xu’s practice extends from examining the production of power in photography to the question of personal freedom and its relationship to political regimes. He negotiates this from the perspective as a Chinese gay man. In his work\, Xu migrates between mediums like photography\, new media\, and installation. These movements operate similarly to his displaced and fractured identity.\nHe is the recipient of the Chicago DCASE Artist Grant (2022)\, CENTER Development Grant (2021)\, Hyéres International Festival Prize (2020)\, PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai Exposure Award (2020)\, Philadelphia Photo Arts Center Annual Competition (2019)\, Lensculture Emerging Talent Award (2019)\, and Kodak Film Photo Award (2019). He has received artist residencies including ACRE (Chicago\, IL)\, Light Work (Syracuse\, NY)\, and Latitude (Chicago\, IL). His works have been exhibited and screened internationally including the Aperture Foundation\, New York; International Center of Photography\, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago; New Orlean Museum of Art\, New Orleans; Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston; Wesleyan University\, Middletown; Fotomuseum Winterthur\, Switzerland; Mint Museum\, Charlotte; 36th Kasseler Dokfest\, Germany\, and others. His work can be found in public collections including San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art\, Harvard Art Museums\, Museum of Contemporary Photography Chicago\, and New Orleans Museum of Art. The program is a sound performance by Kikù Hibino and Chien-An Yuan on Saturday\, October 15\, from 1pm-2:30pm CT\, a day before the closing of the exhibition. \nRegister here \nAbout the artists:\nJapanese-born Chicago-based sound artist Kikù Hibino produces electronic music that focuses on unusual rhythmic structure and melodies that are inspired by optical illusion and moiré patterns. From chamber music for media productions to digital micro sound for art installations\, he has collaborated internationally with a wide variety of artists and scholars. He’s a 2017 Individual Artist Grant recipient from Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs\, 2021 Outer Ear Artist in Residency at Experimental Sound Studio\, and 2021 nominee for Best Asian Entertainer at Chicago Music Awards. In 2021\, Kikù and his creative partner Gregory Bae launched S/N\, an electronic music concert series. \nChien-An Yuan is an interdisciplinary artist\, designer\, and educator based in Ann Arbor\, MI. Yuan runs 1473\, a record label specializing in improvisation\, electronics\, and collaboration. He is also a founding member of IS/LAND\, a performance collaborative comprised of AAPI movers\, artists\, and collaborators. His work has been featured in The New Yorker\, Chicago Tribune\, ArtSlant\, Huffington Post\, WNYC and many other arts and cultural platforms. \nChien-An Yuan and Kikù Hibino have performed and shown in cultural institutions widely. \nYuge Zhou is a Chinese born\, Chicago-based artist whose videos and installations addresses connections\, isolation and longing across natural and urban spaces as sites of shared dreams. Zhou has exhibited nationally and internationally in prominent art and public venues. Her new dance film “Love Letters” is currently shown as part of Art on theMART’s fall program\, a nightly public art projection onto the facade of the Merchandise Mart\, Chicago. Recent awards include Juried Award in the installation category at ArtPrize 2021\, Artist Fellowship Award in Media Arts from the Illinois Arts Council and Honorary Mention in the 2020 Prix Ars Electronica in Linz\, Austria.

The panel will be hosted within the exhibit space for Sami Dreams\, a photography exhibit displaying portraits of Sami people and their oral histories. Utilizing book-making\, craft-making and works on paper\, 9 Artists/9 Months/ 9 Perspectives presents a birth of vision under hardship felt worldwide\, collectively allowing us to reckon with our own perspectives\, reflections and welfare.\n  \nThis exhibition presents the conception\, gestation\, and birth of a collaborative artists’ books created by nine Black women artists of the collective\, Dandelion Black Women Artists. Their responses\, perspectives\, and reflections were inspired by the continuous struggle for health\, social\, and economic welfare of marginalized people during COVID-19\, the lack of response from the federal government\, and the political allyship of socio-political grassroots movements like Black Lives Matter. Craft-making became a transgressive act through artivism\, perspective\, and vision.

DESCRIPTION:At Home: Cindy Bernhard\, Ellen Greene\, Ann Toebbe\, Gwendolyn Zabicki\nOCTOBER 8- DECEMEBR 4\, 2022\nThis exhibition presents works by four Chicago artists with a focus on paintings. As the exhibition title suggests\, the show’s premise is about the artist’s exploration of the layered emotional resonance of the concept of home. We have been living in a pandemic when most people have spent an unusually long time in their homes.Conversely\, around the world\, refugees have been forced to leave their homes\, some with the hope of returning and others seeking a new life and home. We are asking the question; what does home mean? Is it a familiarity with the environment\, or is home just an abstract place in our minds?\nIn the atmospheric paintings of Cindy Bernhard\, we can see imaginary interiors with pop culture elements\, food\, and motifs from lifestyle blogs. In her works\, she humorously critiques the nature of artifice and creates a vision of home as she wants to remember it. There are always pets\, a small dog or cat\, to add to the domesticity of the image.\nEllen Greene is looking back at domesticity and motherhood and the time when children are starting to assert their independence and leaving home years later. Some of her oil paintings depict the artist and her daughters. In others\, figures are absent; what remains is a respectable floral wall-papered pattern interrupted with childhood vandalism.\nAnn Toebbe’s paintings are reminiscent of architectural or design drawings\, but she fills them with personal objects worth a closer look. In these obsessively crafted paintings\, we see representations of the resident’s individuality and aesthetic choices. In each work\, furniture selections\, plants\, carpets\, knick-knacks\, and items are left around\, representing a home that cannot be replicated even if one wants to. These unfolded rooms are based on living spaces of the artist’s family\, friends\, and acquaintances\, recreated from memories or photographs.\nIn the works of Gwendolyn Zabicki\, intimate images of everyday life are quietly captured; brushing teeth\, drying hair\, or sleeping. These simple rituals happen every day\, unobserved or remembered. These events can only occur in the comfort and privacy of our homes.\nThe exhibition is curated by Stano Grezdo and Linda Dorman.

DESCRIPTION:Owen McHugh and Abstraction in the Permanent Collection\nSaturday\, October 8 – Sunday\, December 4\, 2022\nOpening Reception: October 8 12:00-4:00 pm\nThe Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is delighted to announce Owen McHugh and Abstraction in the Permanent Collection. This exhibition highlights abstract\, non-representational works in UIMA’s Permanent Collection alongside Owen McHugh’s most recent works from 2017 to the present. Artists exhibiting from the Permanent Collection include Corey Postiglione\, Kathie Shaw\, John Hoyland\, Alexander Hunenko\, Martin Hurtig\, Lida Petruniak-Colucci\, Michael Mandziuk\, Irma Osadsa\, William Pura\, and David Samila.\nOwen McHugh is a local Chicago Artist deeply rooted in Abstraction throughout his career. He maintained his M.F.A from Northern Illinois University\, and he taught Two-Dimensional Design as well as painting and drawing courses at Columbia College Chicago for over forty years. His work is in many permanent collections including the National Museum of American Art\, State of Illinois Collection\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL.\nWhile many abstract artists gravitate to working within one stylistic approach in abstraction\, geometric or gestural\, McHugh attempts to bridge the two together. This ambiguous configuration of conflict\, becomes a metaphor of existence for McHugh. In his most recent years\, McHugh developed his own personal process in which he began an arrangement of organic forms that then underwent a transfiguration through repeated overlays and spattering\, modifying coloration and organic shapes in his beginning formations.

DESCRIPTION:September 22\, 2022 | 6:30pm CDT\nOn-Site & Online \n  \nDavid Seymour – better known as “Chim” — is widely remembered as the first human rights photographer. One of the cofounders of photojournalism’s famous cooperative Magnum Photos\, Chim’s work was poignant and emphatic – transcending generations\, making him one of the 20th century’s quintessential photographers. \nJoin us for a special presentation by Carole Naggar and Ben Shneiderman to celebrate the opening of our latest exhibition\, Chim: Between Devastation and Resurrection\, which focuses on Seymour’s photographs of post-World War II reconstruction in Europe\, European elections\, the effect of the war on children\, and the birth of the new State of Israel. \nNaggar is an author and photography historian who has studied Chim’s life and work for decades. Her long-awaited biography\, David ‘Chim’ Seymour: Searching for the Light\, 1911-1956\, will be released this fall. Shneiderman\, a distinguished university professor\, and Chim’s nephew\, will open the program with a monologue about his uncle’s life and work. \nOn-site guests are invited to come to the Museum prior to our start time to explore the new exhibition. \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Nostalgia for My Island
DESCRIPTION:Nostalgia for My Island: Puerto Rican Paintings from the Museo de Arte de Ponce. \nThe National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture is excited to partner with the world-renowned fine arts museum\, The Museo de Arte de Ponce (El Museo)\, to present a unique exhibit of Puerto Rican paintings on the U.S. mainland. This once-in-a-lifetime exhibition\, entitled “Nostalgia for My Island: Painting from the Museo de Arte de Ponce 1786-1809.” The curated collection of twenty paintings includes original works by prominent Puerto Rican artists Jose Campeche (1751-1809) and Francisco Oller (1833-1917). The paintings in this exhibit have never before traveled outside Puerto Rico. \nJose Campeche\, the son of a slave\, is described by the Smithsonian Museum of American Art as “the most significant Puerto Rican painter of portraits and religious imagery.” Francisco Oller has been called “a Realist-Impressionist” and is considered the only Latin American painter to play a role in the development of Impressionism. In the early 1980s\, El Museo located and restored many of his works\, which had deteriorated in the tropical climate. The exhibit will coincide with the five-year commemoration of Hurricane Maria that devastated Puerto Rico and The Museo de Arte de Ponce on September 20\, 2017. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Performative activations from current exhibiting artists R. Treshawn Williamson & Lola Ayisha Ogbara\, with special guest artist Jada-Amina. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nBorrowed from Lola Ayisha Ogbara’s video work ‘Bound For Glory’ from her continuing series The Perfect Servant\, THE GESTURE ITSELF IS PROTECTION SPELL proposes questions of the body\, disruption\, labor\, acts of looking\, and materiality through movement\, sound\, and mythmaking. \nWilliamson\, Ogbara\, and Amina engage in multidisciplinary practices that reference homeplace\, memory\, and the “gaze” that take place across photography\, video\, sculpture\, sound\, and printmaking. \nTHE GESTURE ITSELF IS PROTECTION SPELL will feature a collaborative live sound activation by R. Treshawn Williamson and Jada-Amina followed by Lola Ayisha Ogbara’s video work ‘Bound For Glory’\, in which Ogbara uses Chicago’s labor intensive history\, centralizing Black women domestic workers\, to envision a radical future for Black lives. Ogbara finds an additional dialogue between sculpture and experimental photography that challenges our relationship to viewership. Ogbara questions\, “What lengths are we willing to go to in order to protect what is rightfully ours?” as she begins to imagine a collective disruption in the way we use our bodies to perform artistic labor. \nIn the same ways Ogbara imagines collective disruption and Black women’s labor \, R. Treshawn Williamson and Jada-Amina also explore the Black maternal and cultural re-imagination through sound mixing and oral histories\, through what Amina describes as “a sonic meditation grounded in incantation and afro-sentimentality…” \nThis program is the final program related to our current exhibition “…of the land: acts of refusal and ratification” \, which features new and recent works from Chicago-based artists Ajmal ‘Mas Man’ Millar\, Lola Ayisha Ogbara\, and R. Depicted events include the Greek Independence Day Parade\, Bud Billiken Day Parade\, Chinese New Year Parade\, Mexican Civic Society Parade\, Jewish Festival and many more. \nThe National Hellenic Museum’s mission is to share Greek history\, art and culture\, and the Greek American experience. Diane’s works vividly capture how Chicago’s Greek American community gathers in the public space to show pride in its identity and share its culture. And\, that our adult imaginations can still be stirred by these timeless tales.\nThat’s why the UNM is once again bringing KAZKY\, the magical folktale dioramas of Luba and Andrij Chornodolsky\, to Chicago.

DESCRIPTION:On display in the Main Gallery Sept. 9 – Nov. 27\, 2022 \nExhibit Opening\, Friday\, Sept. 9\, 6 p.m.\nGallery walk with artists and lecture by Pieper Bloomquist starting at 6:30 p.m.\nThe opening is in person but the lecture can be joined via Zoom. Link can be found at registration link. \nMaster folk artists Alison Aune\, Pieper Bloomquist\, and Åse Larsjos have studied\, taught\, and transformed traditional Swedish dalmålningar art from Dalarna. Their works reviving and reimagining the possibilities of Swedish folk art for the contemporary day will be exhibited alongside historic pieces from the Swedish American Museum collection. Come see the evolution of Swedish folk with its characteristic floral kurbits (fantastical gourd flowers) and decorative figurative bonadsmåleri painting from the southern provinces of Småland and Halland from hundreds of years ago to today! \nZoom will start at 6:30 p.m.
