SUMMARY:PROMPT/ DREAM/ BUILD: Andrea Yarbrough & ebere agwuncha
DESCRIPTION:A virtual conversation from South Side Community Art Center’s 3831/Voices Series. \n3831/VOICES is a new program series of conversations and lectures featuring Black artists\, scholars\, curators\, historians\, and arts workers that invite our community into their creative practices\, research\, and conceptual processes\, and more! 3831 takes after SSCAC’s exact numerical address in the historic Bronzeville neighborhood. Although we recognize ourselves as an iconic historical site for Black artistic and cultural advancement\, we continue to evolve as a contemporary hub for new thought practices\, creative practices\, and innovative frameworks being developed by a diverse array of amazing folks here in our city\, and beyond. \nAndrea and ebere’s multidisciplinary practices are informed by acts of care and storytelling\, that ultimately become actualized within the objects and projects they build out- individually and collectively. Engaging in practices of co-thinking\, designing\, and building\, they both expand on alternative modes for solidarity amongst Black women\, restorative design approaches\, and a socially informed process of creating.Andrea and ebere will lead us in to a live call and response\, directed by their relationships to dreaming\, thought processes\, and “the work”. \n\nZOOM REGISTRATION: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUqcuirqTooE9VNHGJRbDjKaWG2dG5FpvoP \nImage courtesy: Andrea Yarbrough

SUMMARY:Laura Lynn Hsieh: Mahjong and Dumplings
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, the Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) will launch the Spotlight Series\, a new initiative to showcase recent and past work by emerging and mid-career artists of Chinese descent locally. Curated by Larry Lee (Molar Productions)\, the project aims to introduce\, promote and celebrate the divergent artistic visions and experiences of being Chinese in America looking at and reflecting upon our relationship to contemporary visual culture to a wider audience within our community and Chicago. \nJoin us on Saturday\, March 19th from 3-6pm CT for the inaugural opening reception of Laura Lynn Hsieh: Mahjong and Dumplings featuring ceramics and video by the artist Laura Lynn Hsieh. This exhibitition will run from March 19 through April 29. \nPlease RSVP here \nAbout the artist\nLaura Lynn Hsieh is a first-generation Chinese American who doesn’t speak Chinese. \nGrowing up in an all-white\, Massachusetts town has influenced her work as much as having parents who fled their homeland during wartime and who expect her to maintain ties to a culture she has never known. As an installation artist\, Hsieh’s creative processes involve writing\, text usage\, sculptural and ceramic components\, as well as video and performance. Her work investigates notions of community\, culture\, family\, and the routine of the everyday. \nShe has worked in the apparel\, computer\, and housewares product industries\, working with Chinese manufacturers\, factories\, and laborers and has taught various high school\, undergraduate\, and graduate-level classes in sculpture\, ceramics\, 2D design\, computer programming\, and non-ferrous metals. Hsieh has a B.A. from Hamilton College\, a degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising\, and an M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening - De:Lata
DESCRIPTION:Puerto Rican artist Bibiana Suárez’s colorful paintings with playful combinations of text and image from the new series she has titled De:Lata will be shown at NMPRAC starting March 10\, 2022. The title is a word play between the verb delatar\, to tell\, and the noun lata\, can\, the phrases dar lata\, to be a bore\, and de una lata\, from a can.  This is because what has inspired Suárez’s new body of work is her analysis of food labels and their misleading representation of contemporary Latinas. This series extends Suárez’s interest in the marketing of Latino culture. \nBorn and raised in Puerto Rico\, Bibiana Suárez has resided in Chicago since 1980. She has a BFA and MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is currently a Professor in The Art School at DePaul University. Suárez’s art is a laboratory where her personal experiences get tested against the socio- political conditions in which people of color live\, emphasizing the convergence between race\, politics\, and culture as applied to Puerto Ricans and other Latinos in the U.S.  Her solo exhibitions include Memoria(Memory)\, Hyde Park Art Center\, Chicago; Domino/Dominó\, Museo del Barrio\, NY and Illinois Arts Gallery. Among her most recent group exhibitions are Repatriación/Repatriation at Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico\, and Identity Play at Space Gallery\, Pittsburg.  She has received several awards including three Illinois Arts Council Individual Visual Artist Fellowships\, a NEA Regional Fellowship and was a fellow at the RACE Center\, University of Chicago\, the Ragdale Foundation\, and the Center for Latino Research\, DePaul University. \nImage:\nLa Fajona (The Hard Worker)\nacrylic on canvas\n52 x 78 ½ in.\n2018

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Colors of Life
DESCRIPTION:Colors of Life by Elena Diadenko \n  \nElena was born and raised in Ukraine\, and immigrated to the United States in 1992. She received her first art degrees from Myrgorod Ceramics College and Lviv National Academy of Arts in Ukraine. Later\, she received two masters’ degrees in interdisciplinary art and art education from Columbia College in Chicago. She has lived and worked in Chicago for 30 years and currently works at Schurz High School as an art teacher. She teaches Multimedia Art and College Level Art classes. In 2004\, she won a Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching art. She loves her students and is passionate about teaching them the different aspects of art. She has participated in more than 60 art exhibitions including solo and group shows and art fairs in the Chicagoland area. This is her first solo exhibition at the Ukrainian National Museum. At the show tonight\, visitors will see art works from throughout different periods of her life. Recently\, she is focusing on painting art works that explore invisible aspects of the spiritual world and our desire to see it. In her glass paintings she is trying to preserve Ukrainian folk culture using an ancient Ukrainian technique with black outlines. In her acrylic paintings she combines abstract with figurative styles. Inspiration comes from life around the artist: “The world is so strange\, so attractive\, so multi-faceted- I can’t help but love it. All that I do\, all that I paint\, comes out of this love I feel for the world\, for all that is alive in this world\, for my fellow travelers\, and for God.”

SUMMARY:Virtual Exhibit Tour: "Rise Up: Stonewall and the LGBTQ Rights Movement"
DESCRIPTION:Pride came with a cost. Explore Rise Up: Stonewall and the LGBTQ Rights Movement through our virtual exhibition tour and discover how the Stonewall Uprising sparked a national movement for LGBTQ+ rights across the United States and its connection to Chicago. \nThe exhibition blends historic images and artifacts from the movement to share the voices and tell the stories of those who took a stand for LGBTQ+ rights\, including posters from Harvey Milk’s campaign for public office in San Francisco\, a rainbow flag in its original colors signed by creator Gilbert Baker\, and early LGBTQ+ magazine publications. \nOur virtual tour includes a video presentation narrated by Chief Curator of Collections and Exhibitions\, Arielle Weininger\, and a live Q&A moderated by Museum personnel. \nNon-Members: $10.00 \nMembers: Free \nReservations are required. Members must sign in to take advantage of their member discount. \nIf you are under 18 years old and would like to attend a virtual Rise Up tour at no cost\, please email education@ilhmec.org
