DESCRIPTION:Free Admission Museum Nights take place every third Friday of each month from 5 pm to 8 pm! The tour will start at 6 PM on time. The event offers wine and appetizers. \nThis Friday at 7-7:40 PM\, our Resident Artist 2024 – Irene Hsiao will perform at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art as part of the project If The Sky Could Dream.  \nAbout the Tour –  \nLearn about Asian Art in the Heritage Museum of Asian Art with a guided hour-long tour around the gallery. Museum-trained interns and volunteers will give a talk on selected artworks. Each word is packed with fascinating insights\, information\, and stories. During this participatory experience\, you’ll connect with works from across the collection and get a close look at highlighting artworks. Visitors of all ages are welcome. \nPlease note tours may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \nAbout the project –  \nIF THE SKY COULD DREAM focuses on the Chinese dragon as a powerful being that fosters harmony. This creature is emblematic of China as well as a mythological being for many Asian and Western cultures and thus evokes a sense of mysticism\, and intrigue in many communities. Representing the Chinese Dragon as a water deity\, the installation series will feature images and projections of the weather and local bodies of water in Chicago. \nIf The Sky Could Dream is supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant \nAbout Irene Hsiao \nIrene Hsiao creates performances in conversation with visual art in museums\, galleries\, and public spaces\, a practice that includes site-specific interaction with visual artworks and experimental engagement with artists\, institutions\, and the public. SUMMARY:The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness
DESCRIPTION:South Asia Institute is pleased to announce its new exhibition\, “The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness\,” in collaboration with the Paglees. \nThe Paglees is a feminist collective of artists of South Asian origin living across the United States. Paglee or pagli means crazy woman in a number of South Asian languages. The Paglees are: Fawzia Khan\, Indrani Nayar-Gall\, Monica Jahan Bose\, Nirmal Raja\, Pallavi Sharma\, Renluka Maharaj\, and Shelly Bahl. \nIn their debut exhibition\, The Paglees investigate – with fierceness\, beauty\, and wit – the impact on women of generations of patriarchy\, religion\, white supremacy\, colonialism\, violence\, capitalism\, and environmental plunder. \nThe title of the exhibition derives from Rosa Parks’ words: “There is just so much hurt\, disappointment and oppression one can take. The bubble of life grows larger. The line between reason and madness grows thinner.” (Rosa Parks: Writings\, Notes and Statements\,1956-58). \nFeaturing mixed-media works on paper\, fabric\, and canvas\, sculpture\, performance\, photography\, installation\, and moving image\, The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness\, questions and reframes the labeling of non-conforming women as crazy and the marginalization of immigrant women of color. This collective exhibition presents new decolonial narratives that center the reason and wisdom of brown women of the Global South and diaspora\, and provide pathways to a creative feminist future. DESCRIPTION:Immense Journeys: Art\, Nature\, Science and Beyond\nFeaturing Melissa Jay Craig\, Lisa A. Frank\, Anne Hughes  \nOn display until March 3rd\, 2024  \nMelissa Jay Craig\, Lisa A. Frank\, and Anne Hughes lead lives rich in creative experiences informed by nature. Day by day\, art practice and the natural world awaken shoots of imaginative reflections and actions. This exhibition brings together varied\, visual art forms to stand on their own and resonate off the others through surprising interconnections (just like nature itself). A purposeful confluence provides many pathways into appreciation of process and range. It allows for thoughtful exploration of the infinite ways in which nature affects our lives and we affect nature. Presented here are works by three artists who\, over decades\, have embraced the wonders of nature and witnessed results of human actions and inactions. Deepfelt desires\, to share their personal artworks and stir the passions of others to engage\, reside at the heart of this exhibition. There is no one-way in. Creativity and nature inspire\, confound\, amaze\, and amuse.

This 15-minute tour introduces you to all areas of the American Writers Museum\, with a special focus on our special exhibit Dark Testament: A Century of Black Writers on Justice. Following the tour\, you can explore all of our exhibits more in depth and at your own pace. \nForever Free: Frederick Douglass tours are offered daily at 3:00pm when the AWM is open. We are open Thursdays to Mondays\, from 10 am to 5 pm. We are closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The tour is included with museum admission and no advanced registration is required. Tours begin at the Museum front desk.

SUMMARY:What You See Is What You Get By Johan Wahlstrom
DESCRIPTION:Wahlstrom is a 5th generation Swedish artist from Stockholm. He began his artistic career in music and transitioned to painting in 1998. He often pulls inspiration from his previous career as a musician and from his experiences traveling the world. Wahlstrom continuously looks to critique and re-frame society through his comedic\, abstract style. In “What You See Is What You Get” Wahlstrom reconnects with the artists who originally inspired him such as Wassily Kandinsky\, Franz Marc\, Karel Appel\, and Asger Jorn. Pieces in this series comment on political and social concerns such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine and current Swedish politics.

To name a few\, Margaret Burroughs\, Richard Wright\, William Walker\, Gwendolyn Brooks\, and members from AfriCOBRA have all established a creative foundation in Bronzeville. Nevertheless\, the significance of their contribution is not only the artwork they produced\, but also the aesthetic tradition that they established. This aesthetic tradition was founded to reframe the fraudulent historical narrative of African Americans. Today\, there are a number of artists who are following this aesthetic tradition. This documentary will introduce its audience to the cultural traditions that emerged from the Bronzeville community. This tradition challenged the status quo through activism\, visual arts\, literature\, and academic research.Tracing Our Path Through Bronzeville will highlight the contributions of various cultural institutions in Bronzeville\, and contemporary African American artists that attempted to redefine the image and voice of black culture. SUMMARY:Bronzeville in Reel Time with South Side Home Movie Project
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with South Side Home Movie Project\, with support from the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelly Foundation and University of Chicago’s Arts and Public Life\, SSCAC is thrilled to host a special screening showcasing select cinema reels of Ramon Williams! Ramon Williams\, Black IBEW electrician and film hobbyist\, was an early adopter of amateur filmmaking and invested in documenting the Bronzeville community in which he lived — filming major Bronzeville social and civic events between the 1940s and 1960s. \nWe’re honored to show a selection of these films during Black History Month\, to highlight Ramon Williams’s commitment to documenting Black life on the South Side\, and the lasting legacy of Black cinema’s power to visualize Black life in real time. \nWe’ll be joined by SSHMP Assistant Director\, Saroop Singh (fka Justin Williams)\, Bronzeville Historical Society President Sherry Williams\, and PhD student in Cinema and Media Studies at UChicago\, Avery LaFlamme for a live dialogue about Ramon’s cinema work and legacy in the Bronzeville community. \nDonated to South Side Home Movie Project in 2020\, the Ramon Williams Collection encompasses 302 film reels\, their largest donation yet\, representing never-before-seen visual records of Bronzeville authored by one of its few citizens with a movie camera! What was Black social life like during that time? How did Black folks present and fashion themselves? What were significant events that took place in the Bronzeville community? We hope you’ll join us to find out! \nSSHMP presents a uniquely successful model for encouraging local residents to recognize the value of their personal archives\, to preserve original film prints in optimal conditions\, and to digitize home movies for public access\, creative projects and scholarly research. Their film vault currently houses over 600 film reels (8mm\, Super 8\, 16mm) from 33 South Side families. The Project offers a robust line-up of public programs that invite students\, neighbors\, artists and partner organizations to explore and activate the archive in imaginative new ways. \nThis program is generously supported by Arts and Public Life at the University of Chicago and the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelly Foundation

Rice highlights the contributions of various cultural institutions in Bronzeville. Local Chicago artists will be featured and present for the discussion. \nFilm description: he Bronzeville neighborhood in Chicago has been a creative hub that cultivated the artistry of some of the most influential artists and authors of the twentieth century. To name a few\, Margaret Burroughs\, Richard Wright\, William Walker\, Gwendolyn Brooks\, and members from AfriCOBRA have all established a creative foundation in Bronzeville. Nevertheless\, the significance of their contribution is not only the artwork they produced\, but also the aesthetic tradition that they established. This aesthetic tradition was founded to reframe the fraudulent historical narrative of African Americans. Today\, there are a number of artists who are following this aesthetic tradition. This documentary will introduce its audience to the cultural traditions that emerged from the Bronzeville community. This tradition challenged the status quo through activism\, visual arts\, literature\, and academic research.Tracing Our Path Through Bronzeville will highlight the contributions of various cultural institutions in Bronzeville\, and contemporary African American artists that attempted to redefine the image and voice of black culture. Wine and appetizers will be served. LIMITED to 100 Spots. \nTime and location: 6:00 – 8:30 PM\, Fri\, Feb 9th\, 2024\, Heritage Museum of Asian Art \nAdmission: Members – Free | Non-Members – $25 \nAbout the Exhibition: \nThe dragon has captivated the Asian continent for thousands of years. This exhibition explores the representation of the dragon over the span of a millennium and three Asian countries. It demonstrates how the form and function of dragon imagery have drastically evolved over the centuries.  \nIn this exhibition\, we see the image of the dragon on a Japanese enamel cigarette case; a dragon intertwines itself on the base of a silver champagne holder from the Mandarin Hotel; a child’s LEGO toy is built in the form of a mythical dragon. The dragon is found on a household trivet from China and even on postage stamps. \nAbout the Performance: \nHeritage Museum of Asian Art is collaborating with our 2024 Resident Artist Irene Hsiao to create a new interactive installation and performance series called If the Sky Could Dream. Coinciding with the Lunar Year of the Dragon\, the museum will showcase dragon artworks from throughout Asia\, as well as include an original\, contemporary vision of the dragon from an Asian American perspective by Hsiao. \nIF THE SKY COULD DREAM focuses on the Chinese dragon as a powerful being that fosters harmony. The dragon is emblematic of China and also a mythological being for many Asian and Western cultures. The dragon thus evokes a sense of mysticism\, power\, and intrigue in many communities. Because the Chinese dragon is a water deity\, the installation inside the museum will incorporate images and projections of water\, weather\, and local bodies of water\, including the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. \nIf The Sky Could Dream is supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant \nAccessibility \nThe Heritage Museum of Asian Art’s Entrance is on West 35th Street. Take the elevator to the third floor and turn right to the Museum Reception Desk. Accessible and standard toilets are located on the same floor. Free parking space is available next to the museum via West 35th Street.

DESCRIPTION:Bending Light transcends the conventional use of colors within painting and delves into a realm where colors cease to merely reflect what our eyes perceive\, but rather echo the sentiments of our hearts. Expressed in the works of six dynamic painters\, colors cease to be passive elements; they become an emotional call and response\, engaging beyond the confines of the canvas. Positive and negative spaces react differently\, to create a vibrant dialogue that transcends\, pushing all color theories to the edge. Through a meticulous play of colors\, improvisation\, storytelling\, and thoughtful composition\, each work\, regardless of style\, serves as a conduit for emotions and thoughts\, encouraging viewers to delve deeper into their own introspection.   \nEchoing curator and artist Paul Branton\, What does it truly mean to be colored in America? This question approaches theories of color\, in relation to identity and the rich pigments found in nature; they serve as the palette for this artistic inquiry and the profound implications of this label. The artists explore its impact on Black identity\, potential\, and the intricate interplay between societal perceptions and individual existence.\nBeyond their aesthetic appeal\, the works are a celebration of the language of color\, offering a poignant exploration of the unique challenges\, triumphs\, and complexities of Black life.
