Local Chicago artists will be featured and present for the discussion. \nFilm description: he Bronzeville neighborhood in Chicago has been a creative hub that cultivated the artistry of some of the most influential artists and authors of the twentieth century. To name a few\, Margaret Burroughs\, Richard Wright\, William Walker\, Gwendolyn Brooks\, and members from AfriCOBRA have all established a creative foundation in Bronzeville. Nevertheless\, the significance of their contribution is not only the artwork they produced\, but also the aesthetic tradition that they established. This aesthetic tradition was founded to reframe the fraudulent historical narrative of African Americans. Today\, there are a number of artists who are following this aesthetic tradition. This documentary will introduce its audience to the cultural traditions that emerged from the Bronzeville community. This tradition challenged the status quo through activism\, visual arts\, literature\, and academic research.Tracing Our Path Through Bronzeville will highlight the contributions of various cultural institutions in Bronzeville\, and contemporary African American artists that attempted to redefine the image and voice of black culture. This documentary will generate a new perspective on the significance of the cultural legacy of African American art from the perspective of artists who have exhibited their paintings in the Bronzeville art galleries. \nBlack Table Talk: Visualizing Black Culture \nWednesday\, February 28th  \nBCC Gallery\, Addams Hall 207. 12 PM- 1 PM \nJoin our conversation! DESCRIPTION:Join us and be part of the celebration for our Lunar New Year Exhibition – Year of Dragon: Early China to LEGO! \nAttendees will have early access to our exhibition while enjoying an original performance choreographed by the dancer and multidisciplinary artist Irene Hsiao. Wine and appetizers will be served. LIMITED to 100 Spots. \nTime and location: 6:00 – 8:30 PM\, Fri\, Feb 9th\, 2024\, Heritage Museum of Asian Art \nAdmission: Members – Free | Non-Members – $25 \nAbout the Exhibition: \nThe dragon has captivated the Asian continent for thousands of years. This exhibition explores the representation of the dragon over the span of a millennium and three Asian countries. It demonstrates how the form and function of dragon imagery have drastically evolved over the centuries.  \nIn this exhibition\, we see the image of the dragon on a Japanese enamel cigarette case; a dragon intertwines itself on the base of a silver champagne holder from the Mandarin Hotel; a child’s LEGO toy is built in the form of a mythical dragon. The dragon is found on a household trivet from China and even on postage stamps. \nAbout the Performance: \nHeritage Museum of Asian Art is collaborating with our 2024 Resident Artist Irene Hsiao to create a new interactive installation and performance series called If the Sky Could Dream. Coinciding with the Lunar Year of the Dragon\, the museum will showcase dragon artworks from throughout Asia\, as well as include an original\, contemporary vision of the dragon from an Asian American perspective by Hsiao. \nIF THE SKY COULD DREAM focuses on the Chinese dragon as a powerful being that fosters harmony. The dragon is emblematic of China and also a mythological being for many Asian and Western cultures. The dragon thus evokes a sense of mysticism\, power\, and intrigue in many communities. Because the Chinese dragon is a water deity\, the installation inside the museum will incorporate images and projections of water\, weather\, and local bodies of water\, including the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. \nIf The Sky Could Dream is supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant \nAccessibility \nThe Heritage Museum of Asian Art’s Entrance is on West 35th Street. Take the elevator to the third floor and turn right to the Museum Reception Desk. Accessible and standard toilets are located on the same floor. Free parking space is available next to the museum via West 35th Street.

DESCRIPTION:Bending Light transcends the conventional use of colors within painting and delves into a realm where colors cease to merely reflect what our eyes perceive\, but rather echo the sentiments of our hearts. Expressed in the works of six dynamic painters\, colors cease to be passive elements; they become an emotional call and response\, engaging beyond the confines of the canvas. Positive and negative spaces react differently\, to create a vibrant dialogue that transcends\, pushing all color theories to the edge. Through a meticulous play of colors\, improvisation\, storytelling\, and thoughtful composition\, each work\, regardless of style\, serves as a conduit for emotions and thoughts\, encouraging viewers to delve deeper into their own introspection.   \nEchoing curator and artist Paul Branton\, What does it truly mean to be colored in America? This question approaches theories of color\, in relation to identity and the rich pigments found in nature; they serve as the palette for this artistic inquiry and the profound implications of this label. The artists explore its impact on Black identity\, potential\, and the intricate interplay between societal perceptions and individual existence.\nBeyond their aesthetic appeal\, the works are a celebration of the language of color\, offering a poignant exploration of the unique challenges\, triumphs\, and complexities of Black life. Bending Light invites you to experience color not just as a visual spectacle but as a powerful conduit for reflection and dialogue.\nFeatured artists include Edo (Eddie Santana)\, Bryant Lamont\, Courtney Collins\, Pearlie Taylor\, Robert Lewis Clark\, and Paul Branton.

Local Chicago artists will be featured and present for the discussion. \nFilm description: he Bronzeville neighborhood in Chicago has been a creative hub that cultivated the artistry of some of the most influential artists and authors of the twentieth century. To name a few\, Margaret Burroughs\, Richard Wright\, William Walker\, Gwendolyn Brooks\, and members from AfriCOBRA have all established a creative foundation in Bronzeville. Nevertheless\, the significance of their contribution is not only the artwork they produced\, but also the aesthetic tradition that they established. This aesthetic tradition was founded to reframe the fraudulent historical narrative of African Americans. Today\, there are a number of artists who are following this aesthetic tradition. This documentary will introduce its audience to the cultural traditions that emerged from the Bronzeville community. This tradition challenged the status quo through activism\, visual arts\, literature\, and academic research.Tracing Our Path Through Bronzeville will highlight the contributions of various cultural institutions in Bronzeville\, and contemporary African American artists that attempted to redefine the image and voice of black culture. The event offers wine and appetizers. \nThis Friday at 7-7:40 PM\, our Resident Artist 2024 – Irene Hsiao will perform at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art as part of the project If The Sky Could Dream.  \nAbout the Tour –  \nLearn about Asian Art in the Heritage Museum of Asian Art with a guided hour-long tour around the gallery. Museum-trained interns and volunteers will give a talk on selected artworks. Each word is packed with fascinating insights\, information\, and stories. During this participatory experience\, you’ll connect with works from across the collection and get a close look at highlighting artworks. Visitors of all ages are welcome. \nPlease note tours may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \nAbout the project –  \nIF THE SKY COULD DREAM focuses on the Chinese dragon as a powerful being that fosters harmony. This creature is emblematic of China as well as a mythological being for many Asian and Western cultures and thus evokes a sense of mysticism\, and intrigue in many communities. DESCRIPTION:Heritage Museum of Asian Art is collaborating with 2024 Resident Artist Irene Hsiao to create a new interactive installation\, performance\, and workshop series called If the Sky Could Dream. Coinciding with the Lunar Year of the Dragon\, the museum will showcase dragon artworks from throughout Asia\, as well as include an original\, contemporary vision of the dragon from an Asian American perspective by Hsiao.\n​\nIf the Sky Could Dream combines drawing\, painting\, dance\, found materials and found spaces at the museum to reveal and celebrate the dragons among us—structural\, ancestral\, architectural\, internal\, and environmental. DESCRIPTION:Signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 19\, 1942\, Executive Order 9066 led to the incarceration of 120\,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans during WWII. Every year\, the Japanese American community in Chicago comes together to commemorate E.O. 9066 as a reminder of the fragility of civil liberties in times of crisis and the importance of protecting the rights and freedoms of all. This year\, Day of Remembrance 2024 will include three events focused on intergenerational impact; \n\nSaturday\, February\, 17th\, 2024 from 2:30-4:30 at the Japanese American Service Committee: “Intergenerational Conversations: Ripples of the Past”; a workshop on intergenerational conversations for the Nikkei community. This artist talk will be moderated by Alexandra Senycia.  \nMelissa Jay Craig\, Lisa A. Frank\, and Anne Hughes lead lives rich in creative experiences informed by nature. Day by day\, art practice and the natural world awaken shoots of imaginative reflections and actions. This exhibition brings together varied\, visual art forms to stand on their own and resonate off the others through surprising interconnections (just like nature itself). A purposeful confluence provides many pathways into appreciation of process and range. It allows for thoughtful exploration of the infinite ways in which nature affects our lives and we affect nature. Presented here are works by three artists who\, over decades\, have embraced the wonders of nature and witnessed results of human actions and inactions. Deepfelt desires\, to share their personal artworks and stir the passions of others to engage\, reside at the heart of this exhibition. There is no one-way in. Creativity and nature inspire\, confound\, amaze\, and amuse.

Nevertheless\, the significance of their contribution is not only the artwork they produced\, but also the aesthetic tradition that they established. This aesthetic tradition was founded to reframe the fraudulent historical narrative of African Americans. Today\, there are a number of artists who are following this aesthetic tradition. This documentary will introduce its audience to the cultural traditions that emerged from the Bronzeville community. This tradition challenged the status quo through activism\, visual arts\, literature\, and academic research.Tracing Our Path Through Bronzeville will highlight the contributions of various cultural institutions in Bronzeville\, and contemporary African American artists that attempted to redefine the image and voice of black culture. DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is excited to announce our new collaborative exhibition\, Arte de La Borinqueña\, by Creator Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, on display from March 2 – October 26\, 2024. \nThe public opening will be on March 2\, 2024\, from 10 am – 2 pm and will include a “Meet and Greet” with the award-winning graphic novelist and creator of the superhero La Borinqueña\, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, from 10:30 am – 1 pm. \nThrough the serialized comic medium\, Miranda-Rodriguez has effectively emphasized the significance of narrating Puerto Rico’s history\, addressing contemporary social and environmental issues\, and celebrating the diverse Puerto Rican diaspora. La Borinqueña was launched in 2016 under Miranda-Rodriguez’s studio\, Somos Arte\, where he serves as Creative Director and is recognized for his philanthropic contributions. The story emerged during a critical period for the Puerto Rican people\, marked by an economic crisis and natural disasters in the Caribbean. La Borinqueña has transcended fiction\, evolving into a philanthropic superhero movement with a collection of graphic novels\, a special benefit anthology with DC Comics titled Ricanstruction\, and noteworthy partnerships with NRDC\, Chocolate Cortés\, and others.
