SUMMARY:From Slavery to Justice: the Ongoing Journey
DESCRIPTION:“From Slavery to Justice: the Ongoing Journey” uses music to tell stories of African-American liberation. To celebrate Juneteenth\, a historic date that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people\, Crossing Borders Music commissioned new music of The Honourable Elizabeth A. Baker\, Jordyn Davis\, and Jessica T. Carter. \nBe one of the first people to hear their amazing works! The program will also include “Lead Me Home” by Brittany J. Green based on the hymn “Precious Lord” famously sung by Mahalia Jackson\, and the 2021 revised version of String Quartet No. 1 by AJ Isaacson-Zvidzwa. The program will be the subject of a short documentary by Chicago filmmaker Rubye Lane\, and is the brainchild of Crossing Borders Music board member and Strategic Planning Committee Chair Marjorie Adam Clark\, who is also co-chair of the Forest Park Juneteenth Committee and Illinois Juneteenth Committee. Juneteenth\, Marjorie says\, is “a holiday of racial healing.”\nView the event on the library website at http://skokielibrary.info/…/the-ongoing-journey-from… \nThis program is presented by the Skokie Public Library. The program is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.\nThis program is made possible in part by the Paul M Angell Family Foundation.\nCrossing Borders Music acknowledges support from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. \n

SUMMARY:Mama Gloria: In Her Honor
DESCRIPTION:A film screening and community gathering in honor of the late Mama Gloria Allen. \n\n\n\n\n\nLuchina Fisher will screen her film Mama Gloria\, in addition to honoring the life and impact of Gloria Allen\, a Black transgender icon and activist who dedicated her life to Chicago’s trans community. \nMama Gloria (2020) by Luchina Fisher. 1h 16m \nChicago’s Black transgender icon Gloria Allen (1945 – 2022) blazed a trail for trans people like few others before her. Emerging from Chicago’s South Side drag ball culture in the 1960s\, Gloria overcame traumatic violence to become a proud leader in her community. Most famously\, she pioneered a charm school for young transgender people that served as inspiration for the hit play Charm. Luchina Fisher’s empathic and engaging documentary is not only a portrait of a groundbreaking legend\, but also a celebration of unconditional love\, the love Gloria received from her own mother and that she gave to her chosen children.

SUMMARY:Jenny Lind Concert
DESCRIPTION:Soprano Tessan-Maria Lehmussari has been named this year’s Jenny Lind Scholar of the Royal Swedish Musical Academy and Folkets Hus & Parker in Sweden. With this\, this large scholarship is re-launched in a new collaboration during the celebration of Jenny Lind’s 200th anniversary in 2020. \n”I feel extremely honored and touched to have been selected for this year’s Jenny Lind Scholar. Singing has been my passion since childhood\, and now being given an opportunity to share it with others\, thanks to this award\, makes me extremely grateful. Classical music has so much to give and it will be fantastic fun to show what my heart is beating for”\, says Tessan-Maria Lehmussari. \nTessan-Maria has worked with Drottningholm’s Baroque Orchestra\, Young Opera (Royal Swedish Opera) and Norrköping Symphony Orchestra\, among others. \nDinner starts at 6 p.m. and tickets can be bought through the Swedish American Museum website link below or at the Museum. The concert is free. Attendees should plan to arrive at 6.30 p.m. for the concert. \n_______________ \nThe jury’s motivation for the 2020 Scholarship:\n“This year the scholarship goes to Tessan-Maria Lehmussari\, who possesses a rare ability to capture her audience. With her beautiful sounding soprano and her excellent technique she conveys both musicality and joy”. \n”With great satisfaction and expectation\, the Royal Academy of Music hereby enters into a lasting collaboration with Folkets Hus on one of the country’s most extensive and exciting singing grants through the world star Jenny Lind’s donation to the academy”\, says Fredrik Wetterqvist\, the Permanent Secretary of the Royal Swedish Musical Academy. “The special anniversary year 2020 will offer a host of fantastic opportunities for performances and concerts for the scholar and pianist\, both in Sweden and abroad\, and it is a pleasure for us to contribute to this.” \n”It is with great pleasure that we\, together with the Royal Swedish Academy of Music\, give the 2020 Jenny Lind scholarship to Tessan-Maria Lehmussari. Through this award\, we want to support young singers in their careers in the music world\, says Calle Nathanson\, CEO of Folkets Hus & Parker. \nThe Royal Academy of Music and Folkets Hus & Parker have announced a re-launch of the large Jenny Lind scholarship. Since 1875\, the Royal Swedish Musical Academy has managed a donation from the world-famous opera singer Jenny Lind. And since 1965\, the Folkets Hus & Parker have appointed a Jenny Lind Scholar who has toured in both Sweden and North America. From 2020\, when the entire opera world celebrates Jenny Lind’s 200th anniversary\, the Folkets Hus & Parker’s tour activities and the Royal Swedish Musical Academy’s scholarship work in tandem and highlight this year’s scholarship a little extra.
