SUMMARY:From BordersCruzadas to Borderlines
DESCRIPTION:Immigration is one of the most politicized issues in the United States\, as politicians across both aisles debate the fate of people fleeing violence\, poverty\, trafficking\, hunger\, and [political instability. ART WORKS Projects presents From BordersCruzadas to Borderlines\, a discussion between photographers Will Sands\, Oscar Castillo (BordersCruzadas project] and Cathy Edelman\, from Illinois based nonprofit CASE Art Fund [Borderlines exhibition]\, presenting two sides of a very complex issue facing the US Southern border. \nBordersCruzadas: A Collaborative Story recognizes that people impacted by displacement are often excluded from the conversations that determine their fate. Through documentary photography and content collaboratively created with four people fleeing their homeland\, BordersCruzadas explores the physical and symbolic boundaries that define the lived experience of those seeking to cross the United States’ southern border. \nBorderlines is CASE Art Fund’s ongoing photographic exhibition about the Juarez/Texas/New Mexico border. At Expo Chicago\, CASE will recreate the Sunland Park\, NM desert\, the site of the most recent cros­­sings in the El Paso region. The exhibition includes photographs of the terrain\, objects found in the desert\, photographs and videos of helicopters and border patrol searching the desert\, and a poignant interview from a local proprietor whose business is the site of most desert crossings today and in 2022. \nFrom BordersCruzadas to Borderlines will be held in person at ART WORKS Projects\, 625 N Kingsbury St\, Chicago\, on Wednesday\, April 12. \nDoors open at 5 pm to for an early preview of an exhibition in development\, BordersCruzadas. \nThe presentation and discussion will be from 6:00 – 7:15 pm.

DESCRIPTION:In December 2022 Pullman National Monument was designated a National Historical Park. It’s only the second national park site in Illinois. Join Pullman Park Ranger\, Grace Kruse\, to learn about the Pullman “experiment” and what this designation means to Chicago and the South Side. \nThis program is FREE with advanced registration. \nLearn about the Pullman designation\, why it was chosen and what it means for Chicago. Ranger Kruse will also share information about National Parks and how you can plan to visit these important resources in our communities. \n \nGrace Kruse has been a park ranger with Pullman National Historical Park since 2019. Growing up in the “back yard” of Indiana Dunes National Park She’s always felt a sense of connection and stewardship towards National Parks. Although working for the park service since 2016\, Pullman truly feels like home. The dynamic stories (and lessons) Pullman has to tell makes this park so special.

He is the tour director for the CAC’s two Art Deco walking tours and has presented lectures about Art Deco at the CAC and at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute\, a program of Northwestern University’s School of Professional Studies.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Ballpark
DESCRIPTION:What can Chicago’s ballparks tell us about the evolution of our city? Pulitzer Prize winning architecture critic Paul Goldberger will discuss the connection between American cities and America’s favorite pastime. \nThis program is $15 to attend and $7 for CAC Members. \nIn a discussion of his 2019 book Ballpark: Baseball in the American City\, Goldberger offers some valuable context about how baseball and ballparks have shaped our cities\, both physically and psychologically. He tracks the evolution of baseball’s tastes in stadium location and design and why they matter. He explores how the architecture of ballparks\, reflects how we view our cities and the game and how the two relate to each other. \nA book signing will take place at the conclusion of the program. Books will be available at the CAC design store. \nAUTHOR: PAUL GOLDBERGER\n \nPaul Goldberger\, a contributing editor at Vanity Fair\, began his career at The New York Times\, where he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism for his writing on architecture. Later\, and for 15 years\, he was architecture critic for The New Yorker. He is the author of many books\, most recently Ballpark: Baseball in the American City (May\, 2019). Goldberger teaches at the New School and lectures widely around the country on architecture\, design\, historic preservation\, and cities.
