SUMMARY:SRBCC present {Trés}
DESCRIPTION:A chamber music collaborative trio project founded by José Antonio Zayas Cabán and Colin Young\, featuring Miguel Zenón.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nSRBCC presents {Tres} \n{Trés} is a chamber music trio founded in 2010. It started as a collaborative project between José Antonio Zayas Cabán and Colin Young\, with the purpose of performing transcriptions for 2 saxophones and piano. The trio has since performed chamber music by a wide range of composers in Central America\, the Caribbean\, and throughout the United States. \nRecently\, {Trés} finished a national tour titled A Tribute to Puerto Rico that was partly devoted to help raise funds and awareness about Puerto Rico and the island’s efforts to recover from Hurricanes Irma and María. This has now led to our 2019 project\, our first annual multi-week residency in Puerto Rico. \nAs the recipient of the 2019 New Music USA Project Grant\, José will is working with {Trés} on collaborations with composers such as MacArthur and Guggenheim Award recipient Miguel Zenón\, Brooklyn-based Angelica Negrón\, Illinois-based Carlos Carrillo\, and Dublin\, Ireland-based Amanda Feery\, {Trés} will bring free concerts – that will include new music – to low income communities across the island.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening - De:Lata
DESCRIPTION:Puerto Rican artist Bibiana Suárez’s colorful paintings with playful combinations of text and image from the new series she has titled De:Lata will be shown at NMPRAC starting March 10\, 2022. The title is a word play between the verb delatar\, to tell\, and the noun lata\, can\, the phrases dar lata\, to be a bore\, and de una lata\, from a can.  This is because what has inspired Suárez’s new body of work is her analysis of food labels and their misleading representation of contemporary Latinas. This series extends Suárez’s interest in the marketing of Latino culture. \nBorn and raised in Puerto Rico\, Bibiana Suárez has resided in Chicago since 1980. She has a BFA and MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is currently a Professor in The Art School at DePaul University. Suárez’s art is a laboratory where her personal experiences get tested against the socio- political conditions in which people of color live\, emphasizing the convergence between race\, politics\, and culture as applied to Puerto Ricans and other Latinos in the U.S.  Her solo exhibitions include Memoria(Memory)\, Hyde Park Art Center\, Chicago; Domino/Dominó\, Museo del Barrio\, NY and Illinois Arts Gallery. Among her most recent group exhibitions are Repatriación/Repatriation at Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico\, and Identity Play at Space Gallery\, Pittsburg.  She has received several awards including three Illinois Arts Council Individual Visual Artist Fellowships\, a NEA Regional Fellowship and was a fellow at the RACE Center\, University of Chicago\, the Ragdale Foundation\, and the Center for Latino Research\, DePaul University. \nImage:\nLa Fajona (The Hard Worker)\nacrylic on canvas\n52 x 78 ½ in.\n2018

SUMMARY:Somos La Plena
DESCRIPTION:A Chicago celebration of the life and legacy of Tito Matos\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nOn January 18\, 2022 the Puerto Rican cultural community was shocked by the news of the sudden departure of musical giant Tito Matos. After an extensive career as a master percussionist\, teacher and bandleader of Viento de Agua and La Máquina Insular\, Tito left a strong legacy of community work and cultural preservation in Puerto Rico and abroad. \nHis time living in New York\, as well as his relationship with Chicago’s musicians and cultural institutions allowed him to deepen his roots in the diaspora. He was a teacher\, mentor and friend for hundreds of plena practitioners across the globe. \nSRBCC is proud to partner with Tito’s closest friends from Puerto Rico and Chicago\, including Lagarto Figueroa\, Llonsi Martínez\, Ricardo Pons\, Noel Rosado\, Emanuel Santana (Puerto Rico)\, Ivelisse Díaz (La Escuelita Bombera de Corazón)\, Bomba con Buya \, Las Bompleneras and Los Pleneros de Don Segundo (Chicago) to celebrate his enduring legacy\, raise funds for La Casa de la Plena Tito Matos\, and establish a new scholarship for Chicago’s creative youth in his honor. \nJoin us in this Chicago celebration of the Life and Legacy of Héctor “Tito” Matos.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Colors of Life
DESCRIPTION:Colors of Life by Elena Diadenko \n  \nElena was born and raised in Ukraine\, and immigrated to the United States in 1992. She received her first art degrees from Myrgorod Ceramics College and Lviv National Academy of Arts in Ukraine. Later\, she received two masters’ degrees in interdisciplinary art and art education from Columbia College in Chicago. She has lived and worked in Chicago for 30 years and currently works at Schurz High School as an art teacher. She teaches Multimedia Art and College Level Art classes.In 2004\, she won a Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching art. She loves her students and is passionate about teaching them the different aspects of art. She has participated in more than 60 art exhibitions including solo and group shows and art fairs in the Chicagoland area. This is her first solo exhibition at the Ukrainian National Museum. At the show tonight\, visitors will see art works from throughout different periods of her life. Recently\, she is focusing on painting art works that explore invisible aspects of the spiritual world and our desire to see it. In her glass paintings she is trying to preserve Ukrainian folk culture using an ancient Ukrainian technique with black outlines. In her acrylic paintings she combines abstract with figurative styles. Inspiration comes from life around the artist: “The world is so strange\, so attractive\, so multi-faceted- I can’t help but love it. All that I do\, all that I paint\, comes out of this love I feel for the world\, for all that is alive in this world\, for my fellow travelers\, and for God.”

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Operation Payback
DESCRIPTION:What We Didn’t Know Then\, What We Know Now\nProf. Luciuk is a renowned scholar in the field of Ukrainian studies specializing in the history of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada and the United States. He is a full professor of political geography at the Royal Military College of Canada.\n\nProf. Luciuk will discuss a book\, titled “Operation Payback: Soviet Disinformation and Alleged Nazi War Criminals in North America.” The book is a compilation of approximately 40 commentaries written by Prof. Luciuk in the past four decades\, along with documentation related to the topic of how Jewish and Ukrainian communities in the United States and Canada were manipulated with disinformation and set against each other since the 1960s in an overt plan to set both communities against each other.\n\nThe key document of the book is the translation of the KGB memorandum written in October 1985 that outlines Operation Payback (Retribution)\, which confirms that the KGB had several directorates created to advance Jewish demands that Nazi war criminals be brought to justice by alleging that many of these war collaborators were living among Ukrainian emigres. These allegations were repeated so often that they were presumed to be true.

SUMMARY:Balzekas Museum Film Screening: "Second Hand"
DESCRIPTION:See “Second Hand” (2019) an award-winning documentary on migrants caught up in UK’s used clothing trade by filmmaker Artūras Jevdokimovas \n“Second Hand”\, is a tragicomic tale of the long\, meandering journey of donated second hand clothing: from the doorsteps of English manor houses to smalltown Lithuanian markets and charity shops.\n“Second Hand” (2019) exposes the gritty underside of Europe’s used-clothing trade and the lives of the people caught up in its intricate and far-reaching web. The film exposes how clothes donated to charity in the UK become windfall for profiteers\, who capture and move the goods to second-hand markets in Lithuania and other European countries.\nPart documentary comedy\, part detective story\, “Second Hand” tells the story of four Lithuanian migrants–who come to the UK in search of opportunity but who fall prey to human traffikers and organized criminals. These ringleaders appear to care less for the people they exploit than for the used and discarded clothing they peddle. Despite the clash of cultures and tragicomic incidents\, the four characters manage to maintain hope\, humor\, and dignity in a cruel and inhumane environment thanks to their own grit and to filmmaker/director Artūras Jevdokimovas’s sensitive portrayal . \nMEET FILMMAKER ARTŪRAS JEVDOKIMOVAS\nArtūras Jevdokimovas\, an award-winning Lithuanian filmmaker\, will be on hand for the screening and Q& A afterwards. SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: "Naturally"
DESCRIPTION:The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is delighted to announce Naturally opening on February 5th\, 2022 featuring works by Judith Roston Freilich and Lilach Schrag who have come together for their first joint exhibition.\nFascinated by forces of nature and mind\, Judith Roston Freilich and Lilach Schrag examine\, each in her own way\, essence\, energy\, and evolution. Judith Roston Freilich’s works on paper and textiles were inspired by her aspirations to integrate the arts into everyday life. Throughout her life\, Roston Freilich’s home and works have always centered around the cycles of life and the natural offerings of every season. The vital consequences of climate change and the COVID-19 virus have impacted the artist’s work\, and aspires that her artistic creation will act as a springboard for awareness towards scientific ways that aim to heal our planet. With images and materials drawn from both her natural and domestic environment\, Lilach Schrag uses organic found objects\, fabric\, paper\, enamel\, and acrylic paints\, charcoal\, graphite\, threads\, pins\, and staples in making large-scale energy-packed paintings with epic figures and creatures transforming into each other and into vegetation. Layered\, camouflaged\, and not immediately identified\, they convey a sense of awe\, urgency\, determination\, and vulnerability. The natural materials rich with texture\, meaning\, and previous life sends Schrag on a fantastic flight\, and at the same time keeping her grounded in this physical world.\nArtist Biographies:\nJudith Roston Freilich earned a BFA and merit-based scholarship award from Washington University in St. Louis. While working at Landfall Press as a printing assistant and curator\, she earned a graduate degree in printmaking with Misch Kohn from the Illinois Institute of Technology. She has exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been selected for the Rockford Midwestern Biennial at the Rockford Art Museum\, the Evanston and Vicinity Biennial at the Evanston Art Center\, the Bradley International Print and Drawing Show. Her work is in multiple permanent collections including the Library of Congress.\nLilach Schrag graduated from Hamidrasha Art School in Israel\, and holds a Master of Arts from Spertus Institute\, Chicago. Her work has been featured in publications such as the Chicago Tribune\, and The Jerusalem Post\, and she has exhibited in solo and group shows in the United States and in Israel including: Spertus Institute\, Governors State University\, 33 Contemporary Gallery in Chicago as well as the Janco Dada Museum and the Jerusalem Biennale in Israel.

SUMMARY:International Holocaust Remembrance Day Live Performance: Saul & Ruby's Holocaust Survivor Band
DESCRIPTION:January 27\, 2022 | 6:30pm CST\nOn-Site & Virtual\nfrom the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center \nELLEN V. & PHILIP L. GLASS HOLOCAUST COMMEMORATIVE SERIES\nIn honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, join us for a film screening of Saul & Ruby’s Holocaust Survivor Band\, live performance from the Holocaust Survivor Band\, and post-show discussion with the filmmaker. \nThis unique and compelling story is about having the courage to live one’s dreams\, finding purpose and meaning in life at any age\, the transcendent power of music\, and the importance of speaking out against antisemitism and bigotry. \nLike many Holocaust Survivors\, after World War II\, Saul and Ruby moved to America\, started families and careers\, grew old\, and retired to South Florida. For them\, retirement could have been the last chapter in their story. But then they decided to start a klezmer band: the Holocaust Survivor Band. The band summons the bittersweet memories of childhood in Poland\, but more than that\, it is a celebration of life. \nThe band’s history begins in total obscurity\, playing in residential homes for the elderly and small Jewish community organizations\, and builds up into being invited to perform at venues across the country\, including a coveted performance at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. \nAfter a lively performance by the film’s subjects\, Saul Drier and Ruby Sosnowicz\, enjoy a post-performance discussion moderated by Academy Award nominated and Emmy winning filmmaker\, Tod Lending. Lending’s work has aired nationally on ABC\, CBS\, NBC\, PBS\, HBO; has been screened theatrically and awarded at national and international festivals; and has been televised internationally in Europe and Asia. Lending’s work can be found on his website: https://nomadicpictures.org/ \nReservations are required for both on-site and online options. \nProof of COVID-19 vaccination & masks are required to attend on-site programs. \n  \nREGISTER HERE: ilholocaustmuseum.org/events/commemoration-international-holocaust-remembrance-day-live-performance-saul-rubys-holocaust-survivor-band/
