SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: "Naturally"
DESCRIPTION:The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is delighted to announce Naturally opening on February 5th\, 2022 featuring works by Judith Roston Freilich and Lilach Schrag who have come together for their first joint exhibition.\nFascinated by forces of nature and mind\, Judith Roston Freilich and Lilach Schrag examine\, each in her own way\, essence\, energy\, and evolution. Judith Roston Freilich’s works on paper and textiles were inspired by her aspirations to integrate the arts into everyday life. Throughout her life\, Roston Freilich’s home and works have always centered around the cycles of life and the natural offerings of every season. The vital consequences of climate change and the COVID-19 virus have impacted the artist’s work\, and aspires that her artistic creation will act as a springboard for awareness towards scientific ways that aim to heal our planet. With images and materials drawn from both her natural and domestic environment\, Lilach Schrag uses organic found objects\, fabric\, paper\, enamel\, and acrylic paints\, charcoal\, graphite\, threads\, pins\, and staples in making large-scale energy-packed paintings with epic figures and creatures transforming into each other and into vegetation. Layered\, camouflaged\, and not immediately identified\, they convey a sense of awe\, urgency\, determination\, and vulnerability. The natural materials rich with texture\, meaning\, and previous life sends Schrag on a fantastic flight\, and at the same time keeping her grounded in this physical world.\nArtist Biographies:\nJudith Roston Freilich earned a BFA and merit-based scholarship award from Washington University in St. Louis. While working at Landfall Press as a printing assistant and curator\, she earned a graduate degree in printmaking with Misch Kohn from the Illinois Institute of Technology. She has exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been selected for the Rockford Midwestern Biennial at the Rockford Art Museum\, the Evanston and Vicinity Biennial at the Evanston Art Center\, the Bradley International Print and Drawing Show. Her work is in multiple permanent collections including the Library of Congress.\nLilach Schrag graduated from Hamidrasha Art School in Israel\, and holds a Master of Arts from Spertus Institute\, Chicago. Her work has been featured in publications such as the Chicago Tribune\, and The Jerusalem Post\, and she has exhibited in solo and group shows in the United States and in Israel including: Spertus Institute\, Governors State University\, 33 Contemporary Gallery in Chicago as well as the Janco Dada Museum and the Jerusalem Biennale in Israel.

SUMMARY:International Holocaust Remembrance Day Live Performance: Saul & Ruby's Holocaust Survivor Band
DESCRIPTION:January 27\, 2022 | 6:30pm CST\nOn-Site & Virtual\nfrom the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center \nELLEN V. & PHILIP L. GLASS HOLOCAUST COMMEMORATIVE SERIES\nIn honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, join us for a film screening of Saul & Ruby’s Holocaust Survivor Band\, live performance from the Holocaust Survivor Band\, and post-show discussion with the filmmaker. \nThis unique and compelling story is about having the courage to live one’s dreams\, finding purpose and meaning in life at any age\, the transcendent power of music\, and the importance of speaking out against antisemitism and bigotry. \nLike many Holocaust Survivors\, after World War II\, Saul and Ruby moved to America\, started families and careers\, grew old\, and retired to South Florida. For them\, retirement could have been the last chapter in their story. But then they decided to start a klezmer band: the Holocaust Survivor Band. The band summons the bittersweet memories of childhood in Poland\, but more than that\, it is a celebration of life. \nThe band’s history begins in total obscurity\, playing in residential homes for the elderly and small Jewish community organizations\, and builds up into being invited to perform at venues across the country\, including a coveted performance at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. \nAfter a lively performance by the film’s subjects\, Saul Drier and Ruby Sosnowicz\, enjoy a post-performance discussion moderated by Academy Award nominated and Emmy winning filmmaker\, Tod Lending. Lending’s work has aired nationally on ABC\, CBS\, NBC\, PBS\, HBO; has been screened theatrically and awarded at national and international festivals; and has been televised internationally in Europe and Asia. DESCRIPTION:Virtual Artist Discussion! \n\n\n\nJoin us for our artist discussion about their work and who they are as artists. There will be a live Q&A at the end of each discussion.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJennifer M. Stevens is currently a resident of Bayview-Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. She is an enrolled member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin through her father and Oglala Lakota through her Mother. She was born in Alexandria\, Virginia and raised on the Oneida Nation-De Pere\, Wisconsin and received her Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Art from St. Norbert College. \nJennifer M. Stevens has weaved a creative life as a classical singer and visual artist. She studied Classical Singing and Opera nationally and internationally and she studied Classical Art in college and traditional Oneida Pottery with prominent woodland Indigenous artists such as; Rose K. Kerstetter\, Peter B. Jones\, and Richard Zane Smith. \nFurthermore\, Jennifer M. Stevens became nationally known for her contribution in cultural preservation through Oneida Pottery revitalization\, taught Oneida Pottery for 20 years 4k-Advance level students\, and one of the few in history to become a professional Native American woman composer and classical singer. Stevens was acknowledged in the book\, Encyclopedia of Native American Music of North America by Elaine Keillor and Timothy Archambault\, and was a featured Artist\, Singer\, and Composer on PBS-Wisconsin Public Television\, “Wisconsin Life” and the documentary\, “Owe.la’: The Music Within Jennifer Stevens.” Stevens is a Singer\, Composer\, Artist\, Researcher\, and Educator\, and her life philosophy is “Community Building Through the Arts.” \n\n\n\n\nThursday\, 1/27 at 6pm Central via Zoom.
