SUMMARY:Exhibition: “Unbearable Memories\, Unspeakable Histories”: Partition Anti-Memorial Project
DESCRIPTION:Through experiential art installations “Unbearable Memories\, Unspeakable Histories” investigates the Partition of India in 1947. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis year marks 75 years since the Partition of India in 1947\, which created Pakistan\, and eventually\, Bangladesh in 1971. Pritika Chowdhry’s experiential art installations are temporary ‘anti-memorials’ to the Partition. \nOften described as the Holocaust of South Asia\, the Partition triggered the largest migration in human history with over 20 million people displaced\, approximately 2 million killed and over 300\,000 women were abducted in the communal violence that ensued. \nThe exhibition addresses the many facets of the Partition from a counter-memory perspective through experiential art installations. The title alludes to the painful and silenced narratives that have been elided from mainstream discourses of the Partition. \nWhen a memory is unbearable\, how does one memorialize it? And when a history is unspeakable\, how does one talk about it? DESCRIPTION:Join the National Hellenic Museum’s Virtual Book Club! \nIn November\, we will be discussing The Greeks: A Global History by Roderick Beaton\, a sweeping history of the Greeks\, from the Bronze Age to today. This title was selected by members of NHM Virtual Book Club \nBook Club is free to join and meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7 PM CST \n  \nMore about The Greeks: A Global History: \nMore than 2\,000 years ago\, the Greek city-states\, led by Athens and Sparta\, laid the foundation for much of modern science\, the arts\, politics\, and law. But the influence of the Greeks did not end with the rise and fall of this classical civilization. As historian Roderick Beaton illustrates\, over three millennia Greek speakers produced a series of civilizations that were rooted in southeastern Europe but again and again ranged widely across the globe. \nIn The Greeks\, Beaton traces this history from the Bronze Age Mycenaeans who built powerful fortresses at home and strong trade routes abroad\, to the dramatic Eurasian conquests of Alexander the Great\, to the pious Byzantines who sought to export Christianity worldwide\, to today’s Greek diaspora\, which flourishes on five continents. The product of decades of research\, this is the story of the Greeks and their global impact told as never before.

SUMMARY:The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian 45th Anniversary Benefit & Awards Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian will honor U.S. Representative Sharice Davids for her significant contributions to Native American society\, culture\, and history at the 45th Anniversary Benefit and Awards Ceremony on November 19\, 2022\, at Writers Theater in Glencoe\, Illinois. \nOur premier event and annual awards ceremony is named for Dr. Carlos Montezuma\, a citizen of the Yavapai-Apache Tribe. He worked as a physician and social justice activist for Native American rights. Dr. Montezuma was the first Native American to earn an undergraduate and a medical degree from Northwestern University. In 1904 he became one of the founders of the Society for American Indians\, which focused on improving the physical\, social\, and economic well-being of Native Americans. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nU.S. Representative Sharice Davids will receive the 2022 Dr. Montezuma Award for her contributions to social activism that have advanced Native American people nationally. Rep. Davids is a Ho-Chunk Nation citizen and a member of the U.S. House\, representing Kansas’ 3rd Congressional District. In 2019\, she was sworn into the 116th Congress\, making her one of the first two Native American women to serve in Congress and the first openly LGBTQ+ representative to be elected in Kansas. She was raised by a single mother who served in the Army for 20 years. After graduating from Leavenworth High School\, she worked through Johnson County Community College and the University of Missouri-Kansas City before earning a law degree from Cornell Law School. \nAs a first-generation college student who worked the entire time she was in college\, Rep. Davids understands the importance of quality public schools and affordable higher education. That foundation allowed her to go on to a successful career focused on economic and community development\, which included time as a White House Fellow under President Barack Obama.
