DESCRIPTION:Please join us at CAMOC for the first gathering of Truths As We Speak Them: A Storytelling Open Mic on Oct 22! This open mic storytelling gathering\, hosted by Ada Cheng\, is co-sponsored by the Bronzeville Historical Society\, Chinese American Museum of Chicago\, and People Matter. \nThe open mic will rotate between Bronzeville and Chinatown neighborhoods. The inaugural event is on Saturday\, October 22\, at the Chinese Museum of Chicago and our next event is Saturday\, November 19\, at Bronzeville Historical Society. \nWe welcome everyone to participate in these two upcoming events and share their stories. \nOpen mic rules:\n– In-person sign up at 1pm.\n– Arrive early for seats.\n– All open spots are given 7 minutes with a courtesy warning at 6 minutes to perform and can perform more than once if time permits.\n– This is a safe space for all regardless of race\, class\, gender\, sexuality\, and ability. \n  \nAbout the producer and host:\nAda Cheng is a professor-turned storyteller\, solo performer\, and storytelling producer. She has been featured in storytelling shows and done her two solo performances all over the country. DESCRIPTION:Fabiola Méndez: Live Trio Performance and Negrura Documentary Screening \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nFabiola Méndez is a Puerto Rican cuatro player\, educator\, and composer that has taken part in a musical movement\, crossing over the lines of genres such as folkloric\, jazz & Latin. \nRecognized for being the first student to graduate from Berklee College of Music with the cuatro as principal instrument (2018)\, Fabiola has worked and performed for artists such as: Totó La Momposina\, Eddie Palmieri\, Puerto Rican Symphony Orchestra\, the Chicago Philharmonic\, and Pedro Capó\, among others. She currently works as an independent \nartist all around the Northeast and Puerto Rico\, collaborating with organizations such as Celebrity Series of Boston\, WBUR\, MFA Boston\, MassArt\, and Agora Cultural Architects\, as well as composing for animated TV productions for Sesame Workshop\, Fred Rogers Productions\, and WGBH. \nFabiola Méndez’s project Negrura (released in 2022) is an audiovisual storytelling experience that showcases the stories of Afro-Latinx folks from Boston’s Latin Quarter Cultural District. The film aims to create spaces for conversations about colorism\, anti-blackness\, discrimination\, and racism within our own Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Latinx community.  Music\, at the core of the project\, connects our voices to provide a space for self-reflection\, support\, and healing.

DESCRIPTION:The Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) is excited to host the last of two free public programs inspired by the Spotlight Series exhibition Yuge Zhou: Moon Drawings. The program is a sound performance by Kikù Hibino and Chien-An Yuan on Saturday\, October 15\, from 1pm-2:30pm CT\, a day before the closing of the exhibition. \nRegister here \nAbout the artists:\nJapanese-born Chicago-based sound artist Kikù Hibino produces electronic music that focuses on unusual rhythmic structure and melodies that are inspired by optical illusion and moiré patterns. From chamber music for media productions to digital micro sound for art installations\, he has collaborated internationally with a wide variety of artists and scholars. He’s a 2017 Individual Artist Grant recipient from Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs\, 2021 Outer Ear Artist in Residency at Experimental Sound Studio\, and 2021 nominee for Best Asian Entertainer at Chicago Music Awards. In 2021\, Kikù and his creative partner Gregory Bae launched S/N\, an electronic music concert series. \nChien-An Yuan is an interdisciplinary artist\, designer\, and educator based in Ann Arbor\, MI. Yuan runs 1473\, a record label specializing in improvisation\, electronics\, and collaboration. He is also a founding member of IS/LAND\, a performance collaborative comprised of AAPI movers\, artists\, and collaborators. His work has been featured in The New Yorker\, Chicago Tribune\, ArtSlant\, Huffington Post\, WNYC and many other arts and cultural platforms. \nChien-An Yuan and Kikù Hibino have performed and shown in cultural institutions widely. \nYuge Zhou is a Chinese born\, Chicago-based artist whose videos and installations addresses connections\, isolation and longing across natural and urban spaces as sites of shared dreams. Zhou has exhibited nationally and internationally in prominent art and public venues. Her new dance film “Love Letters” is currently shown as part of Art on theMART’s fall program\, a nightly public art projection onto the facade of the Merchandise Mart\, Chicago. Recent awards include Juried Award in the installation category at ArtPrize 2021\, Artist Fellowship Award in Media Arts from the Illinois Arts Council and Honorary Mention in the 2020 Prix Ars Electronica in Linz\, Austria.

From Kolkata\, India\, Subrata Bhattacharya (tabla) and Abhisek Lahiri (sarod) collaborate with Ronnie Malley (oud) and George Lawler (percussion) in Chicago\, IL to create a cross-cultural palette of improvisations and original compositions. The group transcends boundaries creating musical dialogue by fluidly moving through raga and maqam\, tala and iqa\, the music theories and rhythms found in South Asia\, the Middle East\, and North Africa. \nEMME brings together related string instruments such as the Middle Eastern oud and the Indian sarod\, and percussion instruments like the Indian tabla and Middle Eastern darbuka and riq. The group’s message is to inform people\, through music\, about the similarities and distinctions between Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures\, which are all too often mistaken for each other in media\, politics\, and Western society. \nTheir debut album is a result of a live rehearsal from a first time encounter between these artists. DESCRIPTION:Join CJE SeniorLife Holocaust Community Services and Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center (IHMEC)  for an evening with Dr. Martin Dean\, renowned Holocaust historian\, author\, former war crimes investigator\, and researcher with the Babiy Yar Holocaust Memorial Center. Dr. Dean will examine the complex history of the Babiy Yar ravine\, where more than 33\,000 Jewish men\, women\, and children were murdered in just two days. Incorporating new research\, witness testimony\, and images from a 3-D model curated by the Babiy Yar Holocaust Memorial Center\, Dean will reconstruct the landscape as it existed on September 29-30\, 1941\, and describe the route taken by the Jews into the ravine. \nThis gathering will include music by internationally renowned cellist\, composer and vocalist Ian Maksin\, remarks by Holocaust Community Services and IHMEC; the launch of Volume II of Never Heard Never Forget– a new collection of narratives in memoriam and honor of Chicago Russian-speaking Survivors; and a candle-lighting ceremony with local Survivors. The program will be conducted in English with simultaneous Russian translation. A virtual viewing option will be available. \nComplimentary docent-led tours of IHMEC’s gallery focused on the Holocaust in the Soviet Union will run from 4:00 – 5:15 pm. The program will start at 5:30 pm. The doctor and the two nurses attending her refuse to answer her questions while keeping her sedated. A character by the name of Ino appears in her dreams guiding her through her lost memories. Unable to perform inside Afghanistan today\, the group carries the flame of Afghanistan’s rich and complex musical heritage\, from its early history to the modern era. Included in the program will be traditional ghazals based on the Sufi-inspired poetry of Rumi (who was born in Afghanistan)\, Afghan folk music\, and the iconic hits of legendary singer Ahmad Zahir. \nQais Essar\nQais Essar is an Afghan-American musician\, based in Phoenix\, Arizona. SUMMARY:Film Screening & Discussion: 80 Years Later
DESCRIPTION:The feature documentary 80 YEARS LATER explores the racial inheritance of Japanese American family incarceration during World War II through multigenerational conversations with survivors and their descendants.\nIn the 80th anniversary of Executive Order 9066 that imprisoned 120\,000 Japanese Americans in World War II\, families still grapple with the legacy of their experience. How does one inherit traumatic history across generations?\nOur community screening in Chicago is especially meaningful as many incarcerated Japanese Americans relocated and rebuilt their lives in Chicago following their incarceration. The screening will be 50 min long and will be followed by a Q&A with cast and crew from the film.\nThe Q&A will be moderated by Karen Su\, Global Asian Studies Director of Undergraduate Studies and Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago. Professor Su started teaching Introduction to Asian American Studies in 2006\, before the Asian American Studies program was formally established. She serves as the Principal Investigator and Project Director of the UIC AANAPISI Initiative.\nIn her creative work\, Prof. Su focuses on children’s picture books featuring Asian American life stories. She was chosen to participate in a mentorship program with Maya Gonzalez at Reflection Press in 2017 and was a We Need Diverse Books mentee in 2018. One of her current works-in-progress focuses on the story of Yuki Llewellyn who was incarcerated as a child at Manzanar during WWII.\nThe filmmaker Celine Parreñas Shimizu considers it incredibly important that this community impact screening amplifies existing work that supports formerly incarcerated Japanese Americans and their descendants. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Japanese American Service Committee (JASC). JASC engages people of all ages to experience Japanese American history and culture and to improve their well-being through innovative\, high quality programs and services tailored to the multicultural community.\nThis is a masked event. Masks are required indoors to keep our community safe.

During his studies at the Conservatory (Academy of Music) at Prague he was taking part in Prague’s Philharmonic choir and realized in our country and even overseas a few projects within the group „Martinů Voices“ under the leadership of Lukáš Vasílek. In the years 2015-2017 he studied singing at the Musical Faculty JAMU in Brno. He participated in the National Theatre at Prague on programs „Opera nás baví“ (We enjoy the Opera) and also participated on programs of the Prague’s Madrigalists and with the German Baroque ensemble „Hoffkapele Schloss Seehaus“\, also with the baroque group Victoria. He also participated in the Prague’s Opera studio with Jiřina Marková – Krystlíková. He participated in the masterclass of the Norwegian Musical Academy in Oslo and co-operates with the German tenorist and cembalist Johannes Weiss. In recent years he had several performances in Japan and Brazil. In 2022 he will introduce himself for the first time to the audiences in the USA. He is working his way up. Do a musical career concentrating on areas of romanticism and classicism and also that of the Baroque. He plays piano since childhood and accompanies on concerts his friends and himself. He is one of the great Czech talents and presents an artistic face of the town of Nepomuk for the celebrations of St. John of Nepomuk’s beatification (2021) and his sanctification (2029).\n\nThe Musician Ricardo Itaborahy\nHe is these days one of the prominent artists of the new generation of Brazilian pianists and plays with great names in Brazilian popular music like Milton Nascimento\, Wagner Tido\, Toninho Horta\, João Bosco or he American guitarist Stanley Jordan. He is part of the jazz trio of Dudu Lima from Minas Gerais Region with whom he took in 2018 a trip through Europe. Czech Republic\, Italy and Belgium. He also cooperates with the famous Brazilian musician Emmerson Nogueira. As a Christian he has strong relationship with the sacred Catholic music\, he is musically active in liturgical celebrations of his archdiocese and participated on the musical production and presentation with great Brazilian Catholic artists responsible for the musical „Show for Life“ produced at the occasion od Pope Francis’s visit to Brazil in 2013. Ricardo is a self-taught artist. He learnt to play piano with his grandfather mister Neném Itaborahy. He pursued his studies of music in Centro Ian Guest de Aprofundamento Musical in Rio de Janeiro and the music school Centro Cultural Pró-Música UFJF in the town Juiz de Fora.

DESCRIPTION:Balzekas Museum welcomes the Kalnas Ensemble string quartet featuring original compositions inspired by ancient Lithuanian folk music \n\n\n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, Sept. 17\, 2022\, the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture welcomes the Kalnas Ensemble to Chicago for what promises to be a memorable concert and exploration of the origins of Lithuanian music. “Kalnas” means “hill” in Lithuania and points to the group’s ethnographic and geographic origins. For the past 150 years\, the hills of Pennsylvania have been home to many Lithuanian immigrants and their descendants\, who settled the region\, worked in the region’s coal mines\, and passed down their deep love of traditional Lithuanian music. Founded by Composer\, Educator\, and Violinist Dr. Stanley Chepaitis\, the string quartet’s repertoire will include Chepaitis’s original compositions inspired by ancient Lithuanian traditional plyphonic folk songs called “sutartinės.” Everyone is welcome to attend. \nTime: Reception at 6PM – Concert at 7PM \nLocation: Amber Ball Room\, Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture\, 6500 S. For this program\, the Kalnas Ensemble will initiate the audience into the unique ethos of Lithuanian traditional music through discussions and demonstrations of its stories\, melodies\, and rhythms as envisioned in Dr. Stanley Chepaitis’ original works.Chepaitis dives deeply into his own Lithuanian heritage\, and into the heart of the songs\, stories\, and dances which form the basis and inspiration for the music he creates. From the ancient Sutartinės\, which come out of northeastern Lithuania\, to more recent folk songs from around the country\, this music paints a picture of ancient and medieval Lithuanian life in its focus on nature and the cycles of life. The string quartet’s voices represent a search for the timeless Lithuanian soul and an attempt to bring that soul to modern ears. This performance by the Kalnas Ensemble is designed to offer an appreciation of the deep roots of Lithuanian culture and its impact on the culture of America and of all humanity in the 21st century.
