DESCRIPTION:The Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) is excited to host the last of two free public programs inspired by the Spotlight Series exhibition Yuge Zhou: Moon Drawings. The program is a sound performance by Kikù Hibino and Chien-An Yuan on Saturday\, October 15\, from 1pm-2:30pm CT\, a day before the closing of the exhibition. \nRegister here \nAbout the artists:\nJapanese-born Chicago-based sound artist Kikù Hibino produces electronic music that focuses on unusual rhythmic structure and melodies that are inspired by optical illusion and moiré patterns. From chamber music for media productions to digital micro sound for art installations\, he has collaborated internationally with a wide variety of artists and scholars. He’s a 2017 Individual Artist Grant recipient from Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs\, 2021 Outer Ear Artist in Residency at Experimental Sound Studio\, and 2021 nominee for Best Asian Entertainer at Chicago Music Awards. In 2021\, Kikù and his creative partner Gregory Bae launched S/N\, an electronic music concert series. \nChien-An Yuan is an interdisciplinary artist\, designer\, and educator based in Ann Arbor\, MI. Yuan runs 1473\, a record label specializing in improvisation\, electronics\, and collaboration. He is also a founding member of IS/LAND\, a performance collaborative comprised of AAPI movers\, artists\, and collaborators. His work has been featured in The New Yorker\, Chicago Tribune\, ArtSlant\, Huffington Post\, WNYC and many other arts and cultural platforms. \nChien-An Yuan and Kikù Hibino have performed and shown in cultural institutions widely. \nYuge Zhou is a Chinese born\, Chicago-based artist whose videos and installations addresses connections\, isolation and longing across natural and urban spaces as sites of shared dreams. Zhou has exhibited nationally and internationally in prominent art and public venues. Her new dance film “Love Letters” is currently shown as part of Art on theMART’s fall program\, a nightly public art projection onto the facade of the Merchandise Mart\, Chicago. Recent awards include Juried Award in the installation category at ArtPrize 2021\, Artist Fellowship Award in Media Arts from the Illinois Arts Council and Honorary Mention in the 2020 Prix Ars Electronica in Linz\, Austria.

DESCRIPTION:Fabiola Méndez: Live Trio Performance and Negrura Documentary Screening \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nFabiola Méndez is a Puerto Rican cuatro player\, educator\, and composer that has taken part in a musical movement\, crossing over the lines of genres such as folkloric\, jazz & Latin. \nRecognized for being the first student to graduate from Berklee College of Music with the cuatro as principal instrument (2018)\, Fabiola has worked and performed for artists such as: Totó La Momposina\, Eddie Palmieri\, Puerto Rican Symphony Orchestra\, the Chicago Philharmonic\, and Pedro Capó\, among others. She currently works as an independent \nartist all around the Northeast and Puerto Rico\, collaborating with organizations such as Celebrity Series of Boston\, WBUR\, MFA Boston\, MassArt\, and Agora Cultural Architects\, as well as composing for animated TV productions for Sesame Workshop\, Fred Rogers Productions\, and WGBH. \nFabiola Méndez’s project Negrura (released in 2022) is an audiovisual storytelling experience that showcases the stories of Afro-Latinx folks from Boston’s Latin Quarter Cultural District. The film aims to create spaces for conversations about colorism\, anti-blackness\, discrimination\, and racism within our own Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Latinx community.  Music\, at the core of the project\, connects our voices to provide a space for self-reflection\, support\, and healing.

This open mic storytelling gathering\, hosted by Ada Cheng\, is co-sponsored by the Bronzeville Historical Society\, Chinese American Museum of Chicago\, and People Matter. \nThe open mic will rotate between Bronzeville and Chinatown neighborhoods. The inaugural event is on Saturday\, October 22\, at the Chinese Museum of Chicago and our next event is Saturday\, November 19\, at Bronzeville Historical Society. \nWe welcome everyone to participate in these two upcoming events and share their stories. \nOpen mic rules:\n– In-person sign up at 1pm.\n– Arrive early for seats.\n– All open spots are given 7 minutes with a courtesy warning at 6 minutes to perform and can perform more than once if time permits.\n– This is a safe space for all regardless of race\, class\, gender\, sexuality\, and ability. \n  \nAbout the producer and host:\nAda Cheng is a professor-turned storyteller\, solo performer\, and storytelling producer. DESCRIPTION:This event is part of Journey Chicago\, the Chicago Cultural Alliance’s annual citywide festival of cross-cultural events. \nSouth Asia and Korea share a common history of being divided by an arbitrary line that gave rise to new nations\, India and Pakistan and North and South Korea. This year is the 75th. anniversary of the Partition of British India and the current exhibition at South Asia Institute revolves around the aftermath of the event. The collaborative program that will be presented by SAI and KCCOC will highlight the experiences of the people of the two nations with talks by South Asian and Korean academicians: Dr. Hardeep Dhillon and Dr. Ji-Yeon Yuh\, followed by a musical collaboration by South Asian and Korean musicians: Sandeep Bharadwaj\, Woosung Jung\, Suwan Choi\, Chansoo Lee\, Yun Sil Jang\, Deokhwan Kim. Food from South Asia and Korea will be served. Attendees will have access to the exhibition at SAI following the event.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a double feature screening of two classic prewar films: Mother’s Heart and Thavary Meas Bong. Screening for the first time in Chicago\, these films are a celebration of early Cambodian filmmakers’ ingenuity\, craftsmanship\, and talents. These early filmmakers’ aim was to make films that Cambodian audiences would be proud to watch but never did they imagine anything beyond the regional screening. As with many Asian Americans\, especially Southeast Asian communities\, there are many stigmas attached to their parents’ generation of war and related trauma. These films highlight a positive cultural production of their own heritage.

DESCRIPTION:Juan Carmona was only ten years old when his father gave him his first guitar. His passion for the instrument grew and his virtuosity was quickly remarked by professional musicians. Juan’s journey as a professional guitarist took him back to his roots: Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia. For 9 years\, he absorbed as much as he could in the purest flamenco tradition\, rubbing elbows with some of its biggest names\, like Joaquín Grilo\, Agujetas\, Duquende\, Antonio Canales\, Chano Domínguez and many others. A self-taught musician\, he can boast of having composed his Sinfonía Flamenca and Orillas\, today performed by many orchestras in the world\, including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (Australia)\, the St Louis Symphony Orchestra (USA)\, and the Russian Philarmony. His albums Alchemya\, Orillas\, Sinfonía Flamenca and El Sentido del Aire were nominated for the Latin GRAMMY. His new album\, Zyriab 6.7\, retraces the journey of the musician-poet Zyriab\, stopping off along the Mediterranean\, from oasis to caravanserai\, covering 6\,743 km from Baghdad to Cordoba.\nThe Andalusian Trail: From Rajasthan\, India to the Middle East\, from North Africa and across the Mediterranean into Andalusia\, Spain\, musical ideas and instruments were exchanged and have contributed to the foundation of Andalusian and flamenco music. Through music\, dance\, and storytelling\, members of Las Guitarras de España and Surabhi Ensemble take to the trail and tell the tale of this shared cultural history from medieval Andalusia to the present. The performance includes original and traditional repertoire of Spanish guitar\, Arab-Andalusian poetry and music\, as well as Rajasthani\, Middle Eastern\, and flamenco folk music and dance.\nPresented by the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago\, Intercultural Music Production\, and the Old Town School of Folk Music as part of the Ojalá project funded by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Arts.

DESCRIPTION:Bill Traylor: Chasing Ghosts is a feature documentary film exploring the life of a unique American artist\, a man with a remarkable and unlikely biography. Bill Traylor was born into slavery in 1853 on a cotton plantation in rural Alabama. After the Civil War\, Traylor continued to farm the land until the 1920s. Aging and alone\, he moved to Montgomery and worked odd jobs in the thriving segregated Black neighborhood. A decade later\, in his late 80s\, Traylor became homeless and started to draw and paint\, both memories from plantation days and scenes of a radically changing urban culture. Traylor devised his own visual language to record the stories of his life\, translating an oral culture into something original\, powerful and culturally rooted. He made well over 1\,000 drawings and paintings between 1939–1942. \nTraylor witnessed profound social and political change during his life spanning slavery\, Reconstruction\, Jim Crow laws and the Great Migration. The transcendent surprise is while Traylor kept to himself\, leading an unassuming life\, he was nurturing a remarkable creative gift that would not be expressed for decades. \nUsing historical and cultural context\, Bill Traylor: Chasing Ghosts brings the spirit and mystery of Traylor’s incomparable art to life. Making dramatic and surprising use of tap dance and evocative period music and spoken word\, the film balances archival photographs and footage\, insightful perspectives from Traylor family members\, and Traylor’s striking drawings and paintings to reveal one of America’s most prominent artists to a wide audience. \nThe film screening will take place in the performance space at Intuit and conclude with a Q&A with Jeffrey Wolf\, director of Bill Traylor: Chasing Ghosts; Juelle Daley\, Assistant Director of University Arts Engagement at the University of Chicago; and Lisa Stone\, independent curator and consultant. The Emmy Award-winning Annual National Cuatro Festival (NCF) is a unique music event that brings the best Cuatro musicians “Cuatristas” from Puerto Rico and the mainland to Chicago for a one-of-a-kind concert experience. This cultural event highlights the national instrument of Puerto Rico as an important part of our heritage and history. \nEach year there is a special dedication and one of the highlights of the concert is an opening performance showcasing students from the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance’s Latin Music Project Ensemble. It is more than a concert\, it as a gathering of Chicago’s most long time Latino residents\, the Puerto Rican community\, and an opportunity to join together with pride to celebrate the beauty of the Chicago’s diversity. Preserving Puerto Rican traditions is at the heart of PRAA’s work and the National Cuatro Festival is a key part of our cultural and educational initiatives. \nOver the years the National Cuatro Festival has presented great cuatristas like Yomo Toro\, Pedro Guzman\, Alvin Medina\, Luis Sanz\, Prodijio Claudio\, Christina Nieves\, Manny Trinidad\, Emma Colon Zayas\, Madibel Delgado\, Juradito\, Quique Domenech\, Javier Mendez\, among others. In the documentary SOUTHEAST: a city within a city\, filmmaker Steven J. Walsh strives to shed light on this neighborhood’s near-mythic tale. \nThis community once produced more steel than any other place in the world. It had neighborhoods full of life and culture—many different cultures—but that all ended once the steel mills left. The film brings together builders\, soldiers\, scholars\, gangsters\, musicians and politicians from the Southeast side’s past and present to help explain what happened after the area’s deindustrialization. This film is more than just history; it is a hands-on exploration of what it felt like to live in the neighborhood. He believes his neighbors have ordered their one indigenous employee to spy on him and that they have stolen his favorite cow. His 12-year-old grandson has been sent by his mother to live with Víctor just as the old man’s paranoia and hatred has worsened. News of a fugitive hiding in the mountains adds to the tension\, as well as Víctor’s growing blindness. Gustavo Fallas’s follow-up to “Puerto Padre” (an official selection of the 30th Chicago Latino Film Festival) is a low-key\, fog-shrouded\, unsettling portrait of a man quickly succumbing to his prejudices and demons.

The screening will be followed by an intimate conversation with series co-creators\, executive producers\, directors\, writers and cast Bashir Salahuddin and Diallo Riddle\, moderated by WBEZ’s Reset host Sasha-Ann Simons. \n  \nShot on-location in Chicago\, South Side follows Simon (Sultan Salahuddin) and K (Kareme Young)\, two enterprising best friends ready to take over the world as they hustle and dream their way through the Windy City – when they’re not too busy working as furniture repo men at the local Rent-T-Own. Featuring cunning cop Turner (Chandra Russell) and her clueless partner Goodnight (Bashir Salahuddin)\, flailing local politician Allen Gayle (Diallo Riddle)\, aspiring singer Stacy (Zuri Salahuddin)\, and an ever-expanding crew of real-life Chicago residents\, the series offers a glimpse at what it’s like to live on the South Side with humor and heart. \nSouth Side season three premieres on HBO Max this December. DESCRIPTION:Pure heart and soul. That’s how you can best describe Hobo Cane. Born as Javier Alberto Mendoza in the state of Virginia to a Spanish mother and Mexican/American father\, Javier’s love for music burned bright from a young age. He started his musical career joining Warner-Chappell as a staff writer in Miami\, FL. There he spent his time writing tunes for mega-pop sensations such as Enrique Iglesias\, Juan David\, Ricky Martin\, Rosario\, and more. The ever-winding path of life took him to Saint Louis: the City of Miles Davis\, Tina Turner\, and Chuck Berry\, where he saw musical success with his new following. In 2014 Mendoza moved to Music City\, Nashville\, TN where he is embarking on a project as Hobo Cane.

This panel discussion is in advance of the January 14 concert featuring the North American Premiere of Tan Dun’s Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra (Yi2) with Sharon Isbin. \nLeading the discussion is multi-Grammy Award winning classical guitarist Sharon Isbin\, who commissioned Yi2 and worked extensively with Tan Dun. Rising star cello virtuoso Joshua Roman\, who will perform Tan Dun’s Crouching Tiger Concerto\, also joins. Register in advance here. \nBenjamin Britten’s comedic opera\, Albert Herring\, tells the story of an aristocratic lady who seeks a young\, unmarried woman of unstained virtue to crown as her small town’s May Queen – only to discover that no maidens of the town meet her qualifications! \nAt this “Close-Up” event at the Newberry\, Michael Pecak\, Dame Jane Glover DBE\, and Stephen Sposito from Chicago Opera Theater will discuss COT’s upcoming production of Albert Herring\, the Newberry’s Stuart Fraser will draw connections with the library’s extensive opera-related collection\, and COT singers will perform excerpts to illustrate points of the conversation. \nA wine reception will begin at 5:30 pm.
