Featuring interviews and musical performances from a diverse cast of women that includes Remy Ma\, Rah Digga\, Jean Grae\, Erykah Badu\, Estelle\, as well as newcomers Chocolate Thai\, Invincible and Miz Korona\, this powerful documentary delves into the amazing personal stories of women balancing professional dreams with the stark realities of poor urban communities\, race\, sexism\, and motherhood. The program features the beauty\, love\, grief\, playfulness\, creativity\, and pride of music by LGBT+ artists chosen from a call for submissions.\nThis event will be broadcast live on the Crossing Borders Music Facebook and YouTube channels.\nEnjoy Xenia St. Charles Gilbert’s “How to Spot a Trans Woman According to My Neurosurgeon\,” performed brilliantly by violist Seth Van Embden\, along with the clever wordplay of a voiceover by the composer herself!\nTony Doubek’s “Mind Over Matter” is his own\, brand new arrangement of the final movement what he calls his “3 movement piece depicting my experience living with Bipolar II” from his “collection of intensely personal pieces.” It is stunning\, intensely beautiful\, and hopeful.\nFrida V. de la Sota’s “elegía de una pandemia” captures the stillness\, mourning\, and grief of the almost universal sense of loss during the pandemic.\nThe livestream will share the world premiere of Rylan Gleave’s “biomimicry” for piano quintet. Rylan took the idea of biomimicry\, which he calls “the emulation of natural elements\, for the purpose of solving complex human problems” and asks\, “What if we apply this idea to music?”\nEthan Soledad’s lush and romantic “In effect it is this: that I love you” was “inspired by a love letter written by renowned WWI poet Wilfred Owen to his colonel\, mentor\, and fellow poet Siegfried Sassoon. Both literary legends were known for their raw depictions of the war in their poetry with Sassoon serving as a major influence to Owen’s own work. Both were also closeted homosexuals in a time and place where it was criminalized. DESCRIPTION:The Irish American Heritage Center\, in partnership with the Consulate General of Ireland\, Midwest\, presents Irish Art in Practice. Join Jennifer Keating\, Ph.D. as she brings us through the world of Irish arts and artists\, and the living applications and impressions it makes on the world around us. Jennifer Keating is a Senior Lecturer and the Writing in the Disciplines Specialist in the William S. Dietrich II Institute for Writing Excellence. Most recently\, she served as Assistant Dean for Educational Initiatives in the Dietrich College for Humanities and Social Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. She brings an educator’s perspective to this fascinating series. \nDemands of Hope\, March 31st\, 7:00pm CST \nIn spring 2020\, in the throes of the Covid-19 lockdown\, Rita Duffy completed a residency at Trinity College confined like much of the world. She began sketching flowers akin to those she saw emerging in Dublin\, as well as highly detailed anatomic drawings of human organs\, exploring the strength and fragility of our systems in the face of a threatening pathogen. In Demands of Hope we will screen Duffy’s original animation\, Anatomy of Hope. We will also view key works by Ursula Burke like The Politicians\, as we explore the duality of hope: its yearning for something bright\, the preservation of what we treasure or the introduction of something new and our deep fears that such optimism may not manifest.

DESCRIPTION:The South Asia Institute will host Amin Gulgee Performance “Kiss of the Spider Woman”.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nThis will be a collaborative performance work with 13-17 participants which will take place over a period of 77 minutes. The approach will be cross-disciplinary as Gulgee will engage actors\, dancers\, visual artists and musicians to work with him. This will be an experiential event and the audience will navigate through the space as the performances simultaneously occur around them. All the senses will be engaged in this journey of touch\, sight\, hearing\, smell and taste. Through these senses information is sent to the brain to help us understand the world around us. Installations and projections will be employed emotively. This will be an act of collective dreaming. As Yoko Ono famously said: “A dream you dream alone is only a dream; a dream you dream together is a reality.”

Be among the first people to hear “Ogou Wa dè Zanj\,” (“Ogou\, King of Angels”)\, a new piece we commissioned of Jean Paul Coffy! Coffy is a former lead artist of Boukman Eksperyans\, the Grammy-nominated\, legendary Haitian roots music group\, and he joins on piano!\nHear also the reflective “Nostalgia” by Rudy Perrault\, honoring DuSable; the “natif” style of Gifrants’s “Fraternitas! Fraternitas! Dei Patris Nomine\,” a musical tribute to Harold Washington; and the elegance and beauty of Sabrina C D Jean Louis’ “La Cité\,” a tribute to the legacy of DuSable\, and a piece prompted by the work of Chicago’s DuSable Heritage Association. In addition to leading and recording with his own jazz ensembles\, he is a member of several others and an in-demand player in the city’s jazz\, funk\, Latin jazz and salsa scenes.

DESCRIPTION:An immersive fund raiser concert featuring music\, visual arts\, perfumery\, and gastronomy to help Ukraine in its time of need.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nIn The Realm Of Senses presents its fully immersive duo version of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition for two players and seven instruments with works by Ukrainian born composers Skoryk\, Yashchenko\, Bortkiewicz and Prokofiev\, presented by Chinese-American\, Russian-American and Belarusian-Americans who support Ukraine’s fight for freedom and peace. This concert will feature visual projections paired to music by many Chicago-based international artists as well as two perfume pairings to music by Christophe Laudamiel\, and dessert pairings by local chefs. We will perform various works by Ukrainian-born composers including first movement of Prokofiev’s violin sonata No.1 and end with the “Great Gate of Kiev” movement from Pictures\, paired to a unique perfume. Music and art transcends all and will bring people of all backgrounds together to support Ukraine in its great time of need. \nOur co-sponsors are Epiphany Center for the Arts and Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art\, who will be donating the venue for this event and helping us bring the word to the Ukrainian and Chicago communities at large. All proceeds will go towards vetted charities to directly support Ukraine. SUMMARY:The Bridge to Native Chicago
DESCRIPTION:The Bridge to Native Chicago\nMembers of RedLine\, a local Chicago Native American Drum group\, and interdisciplinary artist Ronnie Preston (San Carlos Apache)\, along with jazz musicians from France\, collectively known as The Bridge\, will be the featured musicians for this unique collaboration.\n\nThe Bridge intends to form a network for exchange\, production\, and diffusion\, to build a transatlantic bridge that will be crossed on a regular basis by French and American musicians as part of collaborative projects. And\, in addition to the scheduled projects\, encourage meetings and relationships between creative musicians and perpetuate them. In other words: to give them the times and spaces to join and rejoin on both sides of the ocean and to deepen their exchanges.\n\nRedLine is a group of intertribal singers who perform songs from the great Oklahoma Nations of the Southern Plains. RedLine formed in 2012 to address a vital need for a community-based Drum. This action was necessary as it created resurgence in arts engagement needed to mobilize and build community and introduce/reintroduce cultural practice among youth and young adults in the Native American community. Through song\, RedLine shares a small taste of southern plains culture with Chicago and the Midwest big water area\, while providing a circle for intergenerational teaching and learning.\n\nChampion grass dancer and hoop dancer\, singer\, storyteller\, and accomplished artist\, Ronnie Preston is dedicated to sharing the cultures of Native American tribes and nations through music and dance. As a performing artist and spokesperson\, Mr. Preston has toured from coast to coast\, frequently as a guest on college campuses. A descendant of the San Carlos Apache nation in Arizona\, he began dancing and attending pow wow celebrations as a young child. Now residing in Chicago\, he is a celebrated teacher\, performer throughout the Midwest\, a guest for events at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts and other venues\, and performer and emcee for pow wows and many other presentations celebrating Native American culture.

From deserts\, coastlines\, forests\, mountains\, and prairies\, Native communities across the US are restoring their ancient relationships with the land. The five stories include sustaining traditions of Hopi dryland farming in Arizona; restoring buffalo to the Blackfeet reservation in Montana; maintaining sustainable forestry on the Menominee reservation in Wisconsin; reviving native food forests in Hawaii; and returning prescribed fire to the landscape by the Karuk Tribe of California. DESCRIPTION:Desde Mi Barrio (From my Neighborhood) is a concert series presented by Puerto Rican Arts Alliance’s the Latin Music Project. This series features local and national musicians while celebrating the rich music of Puerto Rico and other Latinx cultures. \nJoin us on April 30 for the next concert in our series\, Cuerdas Clásicas. This Latin American performing arts group is also a not-for-profit cultural organization marked by the qualities of troubadours and bohemians who at times perform in formal dress and tuxedos\, interpreting melodies of a clasical and semi-classical nature\, and at times perform as members of an Estudiantina\, wearing vestments in accordance with the customs of sixteenth century Spain. \nThis concert will take place in the Juan and Gladys Mendez Music Hall (located inside the Latin Music Project Center). Those visiting this event voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19. \n—- \nThe Show! \nQuite possibly the oldest version of Cinderella in the world\, this adaptation of the story of Ye-Xian (which predates the French version by about a thousand years) is about strength and kindness and fun and friendship — and magic! \n  \nMeet Ye-Xian\, daughter of Chief Wu who is made to be a maid-of-all-work for her Stepmother and whose only friend is Jin-Yu\, a talking fish. Now a talking fish is magical enough — but when Jin-Yu goes missing\, Ye-Xian learns from a kindly Old Sage what to do and to provide for herself — especially when she’s prevented from going to the Festival by Stepmother. \nSee what happens when Ye-Xian is recognized at the Festival. Learn what becomes of a lost golden slipper. And see that when Ye-Xian meets the King of Tuo Han for the first\, second and third time that she is loved for Who she is at the end.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this FREE virtual discussion with Xiang “Sean” Gao\, the creator-composer of Shanghai Sonatas\, a pioneering new musical that combines musical theatre\, live classical music\, and visual art. Based on the memoirs of Jewish refugee musicians who escaped Nazi Germany and found refuge in Shanghai in the 1930s and ’40s\, this musical shares how music helped them to survive the war and how they taught classical music to the local Chinese. The music composed by Xiang is inspired by Jewish and Chinese traditional music\, European classical music\, and musical theatre. \nThis discussion is hosted by the Chinese American Museum of Chicago with the Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community (CBCAC) and the American Jewish Committee (AJC). \nRegister here \nAbout Xiang Gao\nNamed as Musical America’s Top 30 Professionals of the Year in 2021\, Xiang is one of the world’s most successful presenters\, producers\, composers\, and pedagogues. He has solo-performed violin for many world leaders and with 100 plus orchestras worldwide. As the Trustees Distinguished Professor of Music at the University of Delaware\, Xiang is the founding director of the Master Players Concert Series & Festival. Shanghai Sonatas – the new musical conceptualized and composed by Xiang is being developed by Tony-winning producers and touring as a concert production.
