SUMMARY:SRBCC present {Trés}
DESCRIPTION:A chamber music collaborative trio project founded by José Antonio Zayas Cabán and Colin Young\, featuring Miguel Zenón.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nSRBCC presents {Tres} \n{Trés} is a chamber music trio founded in 2010. It started as a collaborative project between José Antonio Zayas Cabán and Colin Young\, with the purpose of performing transcriptions for 2 saxophones and piano. The trio has since performed chamber music by a wide range of composers in Central America\, the Caribbean\, and throughout the United States. \nRecently\, {Trés} finished a national tour titled A Tribute to Puerto Rico that was partly devoted to help raise funds and awareness about Puerto Rico and the island’s efforts to recover from Hurricanes Irma and María. This has now led to our 2019 project\, our first annual multi-week residency in Puerto Rico. \nAs the recipient of the 2019 New Music USA Project Grant\, José will is working with {Trés} on collaborations with composers such as MacArthur and Guggenheim Award recipient Miguel Zenón\, Brooklyn-based Angelica Negrón\, Illinois-based Carlos Carrillo\, and Dublin\, Ireland-based Amanda Feery\, {Trés} will bring free concerts – that will include new music – to low income communities across the island.

SUMMARY:Somos La Plena
DESCRIPTION:A Chicago celebration of the life and legacy of Tito Matos\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nOn January 18\, 2022 the Puerto Rican cultural community was shocked by the news of the sudden departure of musical giant Tito Matos. After an extensive career as a master percussionist\, teacher and bandleader of Viento de Agua and La Máquina Insular\, Tito left a strong legacy of community work and cultural preservation in Puerto Rico and abroad. \nHis time living in New York\, as well as his relationship with Chicago’s musicians and cultural institutions allowed him to deepen his roots in the diaspora. He was a teacher\, mentor and friend for hundreds of plena practitioners across the globe. \nSRBCC is proud to partner with Tito’s closest friends from Puerto Rico and Chicago\, including Lagarto Figueroa\, Llonsi Martínez\, Ricardo Pons\, Noel Rosado\, Emanuel Santana (Puerto Rico)\, Ivelisse Díaz (La Escuelita Bombera de Corazón)\, Bomba con Buya \, Las Bompleneras and Los Pleneros de Don Segundo (Chicago) to celebrate his enduring legacy\, raise funds for La Casa de la Plena Tito Matos\, and establish a new scholarship for Chicago’s creative youth in his honor. \nJoin us in this Chicago celebration of the Life and Legacy of Héctor “Tito” Matos.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Ravi and Anoushka Shankar Live in Bangalore
DESCRIPTION:Film Screening and Discussion\nAbout this event\n**Please note that this is an in-person event** \nRavi and Anoushka Shankar Live in Bangalore (2012. 2hr.24min) On February 7\, 2012\, two months before his 92nd birthday\, Ravi Shankar performed with his daughter Anoushka at the sold-out Bangaluru Palace Grounds in Bangalore\, India. With a set including Raga Yaman Kalyan\, Raga Tilak Shyam\, Raga Khamaj\, and Folk medley\, they played for over three hours to the delight of an enthralled audience. Captured here on DVD and CD is the final and breathtaking Indian concert performance of the man who brought the cultural riches of the East to the West. Playing alongside Anoushka – dubbed by BBC Music Magazine a “star performer”—the unique father-daughter relationship serves to reinforce Ravi’s innate dedication and belief in the joy and hard work which are essential to creative expression. \n1925 S Michigan Ave. Chicago IL 60616 \nSAI is wheelchair accessible. \n*Proof of vaccination and masks are required by all attendees* \nParking is available around South Asia Institute\, metered\, and free street parking in the neighborhood.

SUMMARY:Irish Art in Practice: Legacies of Justice
DESCRIPTION:The Irish American Heritage Center\, in partnership with the Consulate General of Ireland\, Midwest\, presents Irish Art in Practice. Join Jennifer Keating\, Ph.D. as she brings us through the world of Irish arts and artists\, and the living applications and impressions it makes on the world around us. Jennifer Keating is a Senior Lecturer and the Writing in the Disciplines Specialist in the William S. Dietrich II Institute for Writing Excellence. Most recently\, she served as Assistant Dean for Educational Initiatives in the Dietrich College for Humanities and Social Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. She brings an educator’s perspective to this fascinating series. \nLegacies of Justice\, March 3rd\, 7:00pm CST\nIn 2014 filmmaker Mairéad McClean was awarded the MAC International prize for her film No More. This meditation on the implications of Internment Without Trial in 1971 resonated the world over as evidence of torture and prisoner abuse emerged from Guantanamo Bay to Abu Ghraib. In Legacies of Justice we will screen the short film and discuss its explorations and symbolism. McClean\, daughter of civil-rights activist Paddy-Joe McClean\, interrogates concepts of security and the political contortions of conflict in this work. Together we will discuss its poetic meditation on these infringements on human rights in the name of security\, as we also bring examples like Rita Duffy’s painting\, Guantanamo amas amat\, and Paula McFetridge’s staging of Convictions in the Crumlin Road Courthouse\, to bear on the conversation.

SUMMARY:Schubert\, America\, and the Police
DESCRIPTION:DANK Haus German American Cultural Center\nPresentation and musical performance by Pauline Tan (mezzo-soprano) and Pierre-Nicolas Colombat (pianist) \nWhile many of classical music’s most revered performers\, ensembles\, and institutions are American\, the vast majority of “household names” in classical music are European. The result can feel like Americans are stuck in a never ending game of catch-up. This Eurocentric attitude ignores the deep influence that America had on some of Europe’s most significant figures. \nOne American in particular\, James Fenimore Cooper\, emerges as a uniting thread between individuals as diverse as Franz Schubert\, the Marquis de Lafayette\, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Cooper’s novels enjoyed a massive readership in Europe at a time in which it was undergoing widespread conservative reforms. These books\, which typically depict a collection of diverse characters in times of tumultuous upheaval\, such as in the Leather Stocking Tales trilogy\, proved to be an effective antidote to the Europamüdigkeit (Europe-weariness)afflicting European intellectual life. \nOn his deathbed and in the midst of revising drafts of Winterreise\, Schubert asked for a copy of this American writer’s latest book. Goethe kept notes in his diary of the long list of Cooper’s books he had read. As a testament to the power of the author’s oeuvre as propaganda\, Lafayette invited Cooper to live with him at his estate for several weeks in the hopes that he might feature as a cameo in the writer’s next novel. \nThe American influence was not limited to those who knew Cooper’s novels. Nikolaus Lenau\, one of Schumann’s favored poets\, went so far as to purchase a farm in Ohio and toured modern day New York state extensively. Although his American journey turned out to be a catastrophe\, the Austrian poet had long maintained that witnessing the American wilderness as well as its political project first hand would help him develop his poetic aesthetic. \nThis program features the standard German Romantic tropes of the Wanderer\, the wilderness\, Sehnsucht and Einsamkeit. Centered on the music of Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann as well as the poetry of Nikolaus Lenau and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe\, our selections will highlight the under-appreciated ways in which American audiences and performers can find agency in the context of typically Germanic Romantic repertoire. While the myth of America as the land of burgeoning opportunity rightfully incites the cries of many cynics\, this narrative nevertheless had deep and impactful reverberations in early 19th-century aesthetic movements. Given the contemporary cultural and political conversation over what America might become\, classical music may have more to contribute to these themes than one might think. \nThis event will take place in-person at the DANK Haus\, on the 5th floor\, Sat\, Feb 19 at 6pm.\nRegister here: www.dankhaus.com/events

SUMMARY:Balzekas Museum Film Screening: "Second Hand"
DESCRIPTION:See “Second Hand” (2019) an award-winning documentary on migrants caught up in UK’s used clothing trade by filmmaker Artūras Jevdokimovas \n“Second Hand”\, is a tragicomic tale of the long\, meandering journey of donated second hand clothing: from the doorsteps of English manor houses to smalltown Lithuanian markets and charity shops.\n“Second Hand” (2019) exposes the gritty underside of Europe’s used-clothing trade and the lives of the people caught up in its intricate and far-reaching web. The film exposes how clothes donated to charity in the UK become windfall for profiteers\, who capture and move the goods to second-hand markets in Lithuania and other European countries.\nPart documentary comedy\, part detective story\, “Second Hand” tells the story of four Lithuanian migrants–who come to the UK in search of opportunity but who fall prey to human traffikers and organized criminals. These ringleaders appear to care less for the people they exploit than for the used and discarded clothing they peddle. Despite the clash of cultures and tragicomic incidents\, the four characters manage to maintain hope\, humor\, and dignity in a cruel and inhumane environment thanks to their own grit and to filmmaker/director Artūras Jevdokimovas’s sensitive portrayal . \nMEET FILMMAKER ARTŪRAS JEVDOKIMOVAS\nArtūras Jevdokimovas\, an award-winning Lithuanian filmmaker\, will be on hand for the screening and Q& A afterwards. SUMMARY:International Holocaust Remembrance Day Live Performance: Saul & Ruby's Holocaust Survivor Band
DESCRIPTION:January 27\, 2022 | 6:30pm CST\nOn-Site & Virtual\nfrom the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center \nELLEN V. & PHILIP L. GLASS HOLOCAUST COMMEMORATIVE SERIES\nIn honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, join us for a film screening of Saul & Ruby’s Holocaust Survivor Band\, live performance from the Holocaust Survivor Band\, and post-show discussion with the filmmaker. \nThis unique and compelling story is about having the courage to live one’s dreams\, finding purpose and meaning in life at any age\, the transcendent power of music\, and the importance of speaking out against antisemitism and bigotry. \nLike many Holocaust Survivors\, after World War II\, Saul and Ruby moved to America\, started families and careers\, grew old\, and retired to South Florida. For them\, retirement could have been the last chapter in their story. But then they decided to start a klezmer band: the Holocaust Survivor Band. The band summons the bittersweet memories of childhood in Poland\, but more than that\, it is a celebration of life. \nThe band’s history begins in total obscurity\, playing in residential homes for the elderly and small Jewish community organizations\, and builds up into being invited to perform at venues across the country\, including a coveted performance at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. \nAfter a lively performance by the film’s subjects\, Saul Drier and Ruby Sosnowicz\, enjoy a post-performance discussion moderated by Academy Award nominated and Emmy winning filmmaker\, Tod Lending. Lending’s work has aired nationally on ABC\, CBS\, NBC\, PBS\, HBO; has been screened theatrically and awarded at national and international festivals; and has been televised internationally in Europe and Asia. Lending’s work can be found on his website: https://nomadicpictures.org/ \nReservations are required for both on-site and online options. \nProof of COVID-19 vaccination & masks are required to attend on-site programs. \n  \nREGISTER HERE: ilholocaustmuseum.org/events/commemoration-international-holocaust-remembrance-day-live-performance-saul-rubys-holocaust-survivor-band/
