SUMMARY:The Reel Film Club: Costa Rica
DESCRIPTION:Víctor has lived by himself\, tending to his cows\, in the mountains of Costa Rica for decades. He believes his neighbors have ordered their one indigenous employee to spy on him and that they have stolen his favorite cow. His 12-year-old grandson has been sent by his mother to live with Víctor just as the old man’s paranoia and hatred has worsened. News of a fugitive hiding in the mountains adds to the tension\, as well as Víctor’s growing blindness. Gustavo Fallas’s follow-up to “Puerto Padre” (an official selection of the 30th Chicago Latino Film Festival) is a low-key\, fog-shrouded\, unsettling portrait of a man quickly succumbing to his prejudices and demons.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Two Girls
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Chicago director James Fotopoulos’s film “Two Girls.” \nThis is the story of young sisters in the American Midwest left alone with their increasingly unstable mother while their father is fighting in the Civil War. The film traces the girls’ naturally fraught sibling dynamic and the ways that their father’s absence ignites their imagination. When they meet a stranger in the forest they become enchanted by a world of creative work and nature\, a welcome distraction from their volatile mother. Play and the dreamlike space they inhabit provides an expansive and ultimately grounding setting for the girls’ response to war. \nFilmed in Chicago\, this work is an experimentation on a children’s fairy tale. Two Girls features German actress Isolda Dychauk. \nThis event is available for free. \nView the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfREVF44G-w \n“Fotopoulos is a notably talented\, prolific\, and obsessive filmmaker.” – Amy Taubin\, Artforum \n“Perhaps no other moviemaker so categorically denies compartmentalization\, falsifying dichotomies of underground and art film\, narrative and abstraction\, and black box and white cube\, while unabashedly appropriating\, celebrating\, and upturning the conventions of the horror\, sci-fi\, hardboiled\, and melodramatic genres.” – Fantasma: A James Fotopoulos Retrospective – Spectacle \n“Fotopoulos is certainly an auteur who makes up in artistic integrity what he forgoes in mainstream appeal …his films are imbued with unparalleled aplomb.” – Mapping the Obscure: James Fotopoulos Retrospective – Cine-File \n“Fotopoulos\, a filmmaker whose visions are as audacious as they are uncompromising.” – RogerEbert.com \n“There is no shot in a Fotopoulos film or video that does not mine the psychological affect of the frame\, the camera placement\, the lighting\, the lens. ” – Screen Slate \n100 min\nEnglish and German (with subtitles) \nFree parking at 5/3 Bank after 6:00 PM located at Western and Gunnison

SUMMARY:NORTH AMERICAN FILM PREMIERE: “THE DEVIL’S CONFESSION: THE LOST EICHMANN TAPES”
DESCRIPTION:Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center\, in association with MGM Television\, SIPUR\, Toluca Pictures\, Alice Communications\, and Menemsha Films\, will host the North American premiere of The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes on January 19\, 2023. \nThe Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes unearths secret recordings of Adolf Eichmann\, one of the chief architects of the Holocaust’s Final Solution\, which definitively shows his active involvement in the planning and implementation of one of the greatest atrocities in world history. Recorded in Buenos Aires in 1957 by Dutch journalist and former SS-Officer Willem Sassen with the intention to prove the Holocaust did not happen as portrayed and without Hitler’s knowledge\, these tapes show the opposite and expose Eichmann\, in his own voice\, stunningly contradicting claims he made during his eventual trial for crimes against humanity\, war crimes\, and crimes against the Jewish people. The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes sheds light on the hidden forces that concealed the recordings\, altering the arc of history as we have understood it for more than 70 years\, and provides irrefutable proof against Holocaust denial and the pernicious antisemitic hatred from which it springs. \nOriginally premiered as the opening film of the renowned documentary festival DOCAVIV and released as a documentary series on Israel’s tv-network KAN 11\, MGM Television\, SIPUR\, Toluca Pictures\, Alice Communications\, Menemsha Films\, and Illinois Holocaust Museum will bring a feature-length version of The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes to North America\, beginning with its January 19 premiere in Skokie. The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes has already received worldwide attention\, with prominent coverage in The New York Times\, CNN\, NPR\, L’Express\, and The Times of Israel. \nThe film premiere will be followed by a distinguished panel discussion with Director Yariv Mozer\, Executive Producer Emilio Schenker\, and world-renowned Holocaust experts Dr. Michael Berenbaum\, American Jewish University\, and Dr. Peter Hayes\, Professor\, Northwestern University. The discussion will be moderated by Richard Salomon\, Vice President\, Museum Board of Directors. Opening remarks will be given by Steve Stark\, Chairman of Toluca Pictures\, former President of MGM Television\, and Executive Producer of the film. \nThe film is produced by MGM Television\, SIPUR\, Toluca Pictures\, and Alice Communications in association with KAN11\, with the support of The Gesher Multicultural Film Fund\, The New Fund for Cinema & TV\, KADAR Foundation for Culture\, Arts and Science\, Mifal Haipas Council for Arts&Science\, Maimonides Fund\, Avi Chai Foundation\, Jewish Federation of Canada UIA\, Azrieli Foundation\, Ministry of Culture & Sports\, The Israeli Film Council\, and is distributed by Menemsha Films. The series is distributed by MGM. \nTickets: Members: Free; Non-Members: Museum Admission

SUMMARY:Wagner's Nightmare: A Piano & Violin Recital
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, February 25th for Wagner’s Nightmare. Wagner’s Nightmare is a tongue-in-cheek send-up to the most controversial and influential artist of all time\, Richard Wagner. It’s culmination is here\, in an album of music Wagner would not like. \nFor better or for worse\, incendiary opinions\, vitriolic identity politics\, and polarizing depictions of national identity are some of the most prevalent themes in today’s discourse. Whether we are enthralled by this mania or exhausted by it\, we cannot escape it. In this emaciated public landscape\, depleted of empathy and nuance\, artists are in a unique position to comment both as insiders and observers to this arena. \nWith this in mind\, we are proud to present this recital tour as the culmination of a nearly two year project in which we reveled in one of classical music’s most incendiary\, vitriolic\, and polarizing figures: Richard Wagner. The man and his music are iconic\, absurd\, and influential…and so are the controversies and outrage that have surrounded him since he set pen to paper. Through essays\, podcasts\, videos on special themes\, and a full length album (released on February 16\, 2023) Wagner’s Nightmare explores in a light-hearted manner\, the reasons why Wagner is so widely admired and roundly derided. There is one theme which unites all these varied activities: whatever we do somehow always circles around a something Wagner famously hated. \nWe hope that by approaching Wagner with equal amounts of praise and pot-shots\, respect and ridicule\, sincerity and satire\, our audiences will reflect on how they themselves regard today’s polarizing\, overwrought\, and sometimes absurd social climate. \nMusical Program will Include: \nMusic by…Johannes Brahms\, Richard Wagner\, Franz Liszt\, Erik Satie…and more! \nDaniel Orsen is a violist in the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra\, prior to which he freelanced in Boston where he performed with A Far Cry\, the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, Fermata Chamber Soloists\, and the Phoenix Chamber Orchestra\, and was the artistic dire ctor of Jamaica Plain Chamber Music. Daniel has performed Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra\, and appeared as soloist with the Fermata Chamber Soloists and Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble. His festival credits include Krzyzowa\, Ravinia\, Prussia Cove\, Verbier\, and the Perlman Music Program. Daniel has an interest in cultural and intellectual history\, which is manifesting itself here\, in Wagner’s Nightmare. His writing has also been published in The Anglican Way and The Journal of the American Viola Society.  \nDaniel is a native of Pittsburgh\, PA. He was taught and mentored by members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra\, Credo\, and the Perlman Music Program before his Conservatory with Kim Kashkashian. He plays on a 2013 Philip Injeian viola and a 2014 Benoit Rolland bow\, both specially made for him. \nWith regular engagements in festivals\, concert series\, and competitions in both Europe and the United States\, French-American pianist Pierre-Nicolas Colombat has been recognized by audiences and international juries alike for his collaborative artistry. After publishing his doctoral dissertation (Boston University)\, he moved to Basel\, Switzerland to continue his studies with Jan Schutsz. Through his work as a concert organizer\, writer\, and performer Colombat actively seeks out creative ways to bring the living heritage of classical music into the 21st century. His main duo partners include Daniel Orsen (violist)\, Kathrin Hottiger (soprano)\, and Vinicius Costa (bass-baritone). \nCost: \nFriends of DANK Haus (what is this?): $15\nGeneral Public: $20 \nPlease Note: Free parking is located at 5/3 Bank located at Western and Gunnison Avenue.

SUMMARY:Splinter: A Romantic Comedy
DESCRIPTION:A play for those held captive by theater itself. On the border of illusion and reality\, the only constant is human feeling.\nAfter a glorious Chicagoland premiere of Splinter: A Romantic Comedy in Wheeling and Evanston\, IL\, the play will be performed again at The Edge Theater at 5451 N Broadway\, Chicago\, IL 60640 on Friday January 26th at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday January 27th at 6:00 p.m.\nSplinter is a kind\, light romantic comedy\, based on French drama masterpieces. You will laugh and be a little sad. You will get a huge boost of optimism. The play is about love of the theater\, about friendship and fidelity\, and about the ability to dream. It is a sensitive and touching story about the theatrical world\, where it is difficult at times to distinguish what is an illusion and what is reality. The only constant is human feeling. \nLearn more about Splinter Theatre – www.splintertheatre.com\nFollow us on Facebook – https://fb.me/e/3673fzYtE \nAbout Splinter\nThe aging actress dreams of returning to the theater\, making new friends and losing old ones. Elizabeth is unrestrainedly devoted to her only passion – the stage. In it\, she finds the strength to live\, feel\, love and hope. Theater is in her blood. It is like a splinter that does not let you forget about yourself…The action of this poetic and poignant performance takes place in a small run-down hotel. Next to the former (or maybe just failed) actress are two men. One is a lover to whom a girlfriend is already a burden. The other is an uncouth bellboy. With the help of the main character\, he can approach the alluring and hitherto inaccessible world of theater. In the fictional world of Elizabeth\, touching\, naive and magnificent dreams are born and die\, and the soul of a delightful dreamer and woman blossoms.

SUMMARY:Notes from the Field
DESCRIPTION:Witness the powerful stories of 19 individuals fighting to overcome and transform America’s education and criminal justice systems.\nTHIS STRIKINGLY INTIMATE PIECE presents snapshots from a variety of real people\, documenting their intersections with the American dream and the obstacles that work to block them from it. Utilizing verbatim dialogue pulled from more than 250 accounts from students\, faculty\, prisoners\, activists\, politicians\, and victims’ families\, Notes from the Field takes audiences on an emotional journey through the faults and injustices of an American criminal justice system that seems more focused on incarceration over education. Deeply human\, profoundly moving\, and full of moments of humor\, compassion\, and resilience\, it’s a masterful work that asks you to observe\, be present\, and join the call for urgent and necessary change. \nOriginally performed by creator Anna Deavere Smith as a one-woman show\, in TimeLine’s Chicago premiere\, three actors weave together narratives of change makers\, activists\, and those caught within the system for an evening of theatre unlike anything you’ve experienced before.
