SUMMARY:Stained-Glass in Chicago's Synagogues
DESCRIPTION:When we think of stained glass windows\, we often think of Churches. Synagogues also have a rich tradition of stained-glass windows. Join us as we explore how these windows beautify sacred spaces across Chicago. \nIn 2021 Chicagoans were alerted to the possibility of the Loop Synagogue closing due to the impact of the pandemic. Fortunately\, the synagogue has recovered\, but the possibility raised concern about the fate of its magnificent stained glass window\, “Let There be Light” by Abraham Rattner. While this is undoubtedly the city’s best-known synagogue stained-glass window\, there are many others\, ranging from nineteenth century anonymous works to some by well-known artists. We will feature them in the program. \nThis presentation will expand our understanding of stained-glass windows in area synagogues as we explore the artists behind these windows and what happens to the windows when synagogues move and/or close. \nThis is a virtual program with a $15 registration fee and is free for CAC Members \nPRESENTER: SUSAN JACOBSON\n \nSusan Jacobson has been a docent since 2008 and gives nine different tours. She is co-director of Synagogues by Bus and Tiffany Treasures. Prior to becoming a docent\, Susan enjoyed a 40-year career in academic librarianship at the University of Pennsylvania\, Columbia University\, and the University of Illinois in Chicago.

Both In-Person & Virtual options are available. \nWard Miller\, the Executive Director of Preservation Chicago\, will announce the 2023 Chicago 7 Most Endangered and share the history\, threat and recommendations for each selection. \nDespite seemingly impossible odds\, the public interest and attention generated by Preservation Chicago’s Chicago 7 Most Endangered list\, coupled with dedicated advocacy has resulted in a remarkable number of preservation victories over the years. \nIn celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Chicago 7 Most Endangered program\, a brief retrospective will highlight notable wins and losses. \nAIA/CES Credits: 1 LUs \nPRESENTER: WARD MILLER\nWard Miller is the executive director of Preservation Chicago\, a position he has held since 2013. For more than 30 years\, Miller has advocated for the preservation of Chicago’s historic buildings. He spent two decades on the issues committee for Landmarks Illinois and served as vice president of Logan Square Preservation for 15 years. He also helped the City Club of Chicago in its efforts to save the Chicago Theatre\, the Page Brothers Building and several buildings on Block 37. Prior to his current role\, Miller worked on many other restoration projects including Holy Family Church\, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Heller House and the grand staircase at the Art Institute of Chicago.

DESCRIPTION:The CAC’s newest exhibition highlights the Bronzeville Lakefront megadevelopment slated for the former Michael Reese Hospital campus and how a reimagined Singer Pavilion can help bridge this site’s past and future. Join us for a conversation with designers\, architects and educators on the promise of collaborative neighborhood development. \nThis program is FREE with advanced registration. Both In-Person & Virtual options are available. \nWhen Michael Reese Hospital opened its doors in 1881 it was one of few hospitals to admit patients regardless of their race and religion. Now the hospital’s sole remaining building\, the Singer Pavilion\, is poised to anchor the first phase of the $3.8 billion Bronzeville Lakefront megadevelopment on Chicago’s South Side. Graduate students in Architecture from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\, University of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee and 5th Year Undergraduate students in Architecture from Illinois Institute of Technology have been given the opportunity to creatively redesign the Singer Pavilion to meet these aspirations. \nIn this panel discussion moderated by CAC CEO Eleanor Gorski\, we will explore the design ideas and discuss the role of megadevelopments in revitalizing neighborhoods. How can students and local communities meaningfully participate in these important development partnerships? Chicago is a hub for architectural education. By exhibiting innovative student work that helps drive tangible outcomes we can bring academic and professional worlds closer together for the benefit of all. \nAt the conclusion of the panel\, there will be a small reception celebrating the opening of this exhibit.

Register in advance here. \nJoin us as Joan DeJean and Jack McCord use maps from the Newberry collection to recreate the European settlement of the vast territory in North America that the French named Louisiana\, and to tell the story of one remarkable woman\, Marie Baron. \nOn February 27\, 1720\, Marie Baron and 95 other female inmates who had been serving time in a notorious Parisian prison were abandoned on an uninhabited island off the Gulf Coast. Most of the women had\, like Marie Baron\, been falsely charged with “public prostitution.” Those who survived their deportation on a ship named La Mutine\, “the Mutinous Woman\,” forged such remarkable lives that their impact on this country continues\, three centuries later. Their lives are recounted in Joan DeJean’s new book\, Mutinous Women: How French Convicts Became Founding Mothers of the Gulf Coast. \nIn Louisiana\, Marie Baron became a person of note and the wife of Jean François Dumont—a mapmaker responsible for many extraordinary maps in the Newberry collection. Recognizing this\, the City of Chicago recently launched a planning initiative for a reimagined LaSalle Street\, freeing up all-important tax increment financing (TIF) and inviting development proposals. \nHowever\, there are questions about the challenges LaSalle Street must overcome: namely\, what is the prescription for its aging building stock? Will tax incentives be sufficient to spark investment in complex residential conversions and protection of the corridor’s landmark architecture? And how central is a redesign and greening of the public realm to LaSalle’s long-term success or failure? Our roundtable of leading local experts in planning\, design and real estate sets out to find answers. \nSPEAKER: PAUL DE SANTIS\nPaul De Santis is a partner and co-design director at Goettsch Partners\, where he leads the design on many of the firm’s office\, hotel and mixed-use projects in the U.S. and Asia. Paul’s recent work includes the LEED Platinum-certified Zurich North America Headquarters in Schaumburg\, Illinois\, and the Viceroy hotel in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood. His work in Asia focuses on tall and supertall buildings\, with key projects in Beijing\, Shanghai\, Shenzhen\, Guangzhou and Wuhan. Paul received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Virginia Tech. He has membership with the AIA\, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat and the Urban Land Institute\, and is a LEED Accredited Professional.\nSPEAKER: CINDY CHAN ROUBIK\nCindy Chan Roubik is a Deputy Commissioner with Chicago’s Department of Planning and Development (DPD) leading the Central\, North and Northwest Planning Regions. Recently\, she has managed the LaSalle Street Reimagined initiative\, the Central City Recovery Roadmap\, the Bronzeville Lakefront project and updates to the Fulton Market Innovation District Plan and Chicago River Design Guidelines. Cindy is a 2022 Fellow of University of Chicago’s Civic Leadership Academy program and is a LEED accredited professional. Prior to civil service\, she worked as a licensed architect for a local architecture firm on several high-rises and historic rehabilitation projects. Upon graduation from McGill University’s Architecture School\, Cindy was awarded the AIA Henry Adams Medal for the top student in her graduating class\, and the RAIC Gold Medal Award for most outstanding thesis. Cindy was also awarded the Alpha Rho Chi Medal Award for leadership and service. \nSPEAKER: LEON WALKER\nAs the Managing Principal of DL3 for the last 20 years\, Leon works closely with municipalities\, anchor institutions\, and Fortune 500 companies to implement projects that are sensitive to a neighborhood’s character while creating economic opportunities for local residents. His cutting-edge community development projects have generated thousands of jobs and brought grocery stores and medical services into the food and healthcare deserts on Chicago’s South Side. Over the next 10 years\, his vision is to help create 10\,000 jobs and 10 million square feet of new commercial space in Chicago’s neighborhoods. \nPrior to taking on the leadership of DL3 Realty\, Leon worked in corporate real estate services at Jones Lang LaSalle\, and in real estate capital markets at Citicorp Securities. A graduate of the University of Chicago’s Law School\, Leon also holds a Master of Business Administration from Booth School of Business and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan. DESCRIPTION:Through the years\, the land and water around Chicago have been radically altered. In 1900\, the river was reversed. Meanwhile\, Michigan Avenue by Grant Park used to be lakefront property! Join us for a virtual presentation as we explore the ebb and flow of our celebrated lake and river. \nStanding at upper Wacker Drive and Columbus\, it’s always astonishing to remember that before 1803\, you would be wading in Lake Michigan. The modifications that have been made to the Chicago River have included dredging\, channeling\, damming\, tunneling\, legal decisions and breaching it at its South Branch headwaters to flow away from Lake Michigan. Likewise\, we have altered the shoreline of Lake Michigan and struggled with it as it fluctuated about six feet from a record low in 2013 to a record high in 2022. \nSpeaker: Kevin Griebenow \nKevin is a civil engineer with more than 25 years of experience inspecting and assessing the safety of dams. A CAC docent since 1993\, Kevin leads tours for guests of all ages. He has given presentations on structural engineering\, innovations in construction materials\, the construction and engineering feats of the 1893 World’s Fair and the design history of dams.

No longer a devourer of human flesh\, the Minotaur is a socially inept\, lonely creature with very human needs. But over a two-week period\, as his life dissolves into chaos\, this broken and alienated immortal awakens to the possibility for happiness and to the capacity for love. \nSteven Sherrill is a graduate of UNC Charlotte and holds an MFA in poetry from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. The recipient of a NEA Fellowship for Fiction\, he has published four novels and one book of poetry. His debut novel\, The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break\, was published in the UK and translated into eight languages. Neil Gaiman selected it as one of six audiobooks to launch “Neil Gaiman Presents” for Audible.com. A prolific painter and nascent musician\, Sherrill is now a professor of English & Integrative Arts at Penn State Altoona.

DESCRIPTION:Crimes and Punishment in Sweden by Kathy Meade \nDid your Swedish ancestor commit a crime? Many Swedish researchers have discovered a note in the church books that an ancestor was imprisoned and desired to know more about the crime. This class begins by giving an overview of the Swedish criminal justice system and then show where one can find prison and court records. The presentation will also include case studies showing what one can learn from police\, prison\, and court records. \nKathy Meade is the North American representative for ArkivDigital AD AB\, a company that offers online access to newly photographed color images of Swedish church books and other historical records. She has been working with Swedish genealogy for almost twenty years. Ms. Meade serves on the advisory board for the Swedish American Genealogy Research Center at the Swedish American Museum in Chicago. She volunteers at the Swedish American Museum in Chicago and the Arlington Heights Memorial Library in Arlington Heights\, Il helping patrons with their Swedish genealogical research. \nCost is free for Swedish American Genealogical Society members; $10 for non-members to participate (use PayPal button below).
