SUMMARY:Paha Stitch: Reclaiming the name and restoring dignity to Lakota Beading
DESCRIPTION:Rhonda Holy Bear will discuss her campaign to reclaim the Lakota language and eliminate the derogatory term “lazy stitch”.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nWords we use to define Indigenous histories and traditions have significant meaning and power. Many common yet offensive terms still used today have racist origins to describe Indigenous artistic techniques and practices contributing to cultural erasure. Award-winning Lakota Artist Rhonda Holy Bear is committed to restoring the appropriate terminology and language to describe beading techniques. In this session\, Rhonda will discuss her campaign to reclaim the Lakota language and eliminate the derogatory term “lazy stitch” used to describe long-venerated traditional beading techniques. Rhonda will share how the offensive word was used to imply Lakota grandmothers were “lazy” women whose artwork was unworthy of respect. She will introduce the appropriate term\, “Paha Stitch\,” meaning Hill Stitch or apahaka kagege used to reflect the Lakota values for industriousness and a strong work ethic. Rhonda invites others to change the name to Paha Stitch to honor and preserve the true legacy of Lakota/Plains women. \n  \nAbout the Artist \nRhonda Holy Bear was born in South Dakota in 1959. Rhonda is a Lakota transitional art figure artist. She has been creating figures for over 45 years. She spent her formative years on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota and\, later\, in Chicago. Rhonda would eventually move to the southwest\, settling in New Mexico and\, most recently\, Las Vegas\, Nevada. As a youth\, Rhonda researched the work of her ancestors in the vaults of the Chicago Field Museum. Her meticulous research and artistic gifts would establish Rhonda as a notable leader in her field. Her innovative transitional art figures\, a combination of sculpture and traditional techniques\, have elevated the prominence of Plains figures in contemporary Native American art. What were once primarily considered playthings are now highly collectible plains Indian art figures. Her work has been prominently displayed in museums and private collections in United States and around the world. Most recently\, her work has been featured in The Metropolitan Art Museum of New York\, The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian and at the Art Institute of Chicago and The Field Museum of Chicago. Rhonda was recently honored in a naming ceremony in her native South Dakota. Her Lakota name is “Wakah Wayuphika Win” (Making With Exceptional Skills Woman).

It is considered to have been a pivotal moment in the South Korean struggle for democracy. \n  \nHayana Kim\, PhD candidate at Northwestern University\, will discuss the gender dynamics surrounding the Gwangju Uprising through the case of Jeon Ok Joo and her testimony in the 1988 Gwangju Public Hearings.

Februar 1988 entschließt sich der damals 31-jährige Dresdner Harry Schulz zu einer Demonstration zu gehen\, die an die Zerstörung Dresdens am Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges erinnert. Er hält ein Plakat mit der Aufschrift: “Nie Wieder so ein Inferno\, aber Freiheit für andersdenkende Menschen.”\n\nInnerhalb von zwei Minuten verhaftet ihn der DDR-Geheimdienst. Nach 12 Stunden Verhör wird er in die Untersuchungshaftanstalt der Staatssicherheit (Stasi) in der Bautzner Straße in Dresden gebracht und nur 19 Tage später vor Gericht gestellt. Das “Schnellverfahren” ergibt als Urteil ein Jahr\, das er im Strafvollzug verbringt.\n\nAm Samstag\, dem 21. Li Chang and Li Yu\, ten years younger\, search for Gold Mountain in the historical novel\, Chinese Brothers\, American Sons. Fighting the inhumanity and discrimination of the West\, they work perilously to drive in the Golden Spike in 1869 and become inspirational builders of the first Transcontinental Railroad and this country.\n\nFrom the author\n“It’s the story of two Cantonese brothers who along with tens of thousands of men from southern China conquer the back-breaking construction of the Transcontinental Railroad in the 1860s\, the tunnels through the granite of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. No first-hand account describing the life of a Chinese railroad worker of the Transcontinental Railroad has ever been found. Historians have searched this nation and the winding road back to China\, to the roots of these forgotten\, invisible men. Many were literate\, yet not a scrap of their writing remains. SUMMARY:Walking in Two Worlds: Understanding the Two-Spirit/Native 2SLGBTQ+ Community
DESCRIPTION:Join Two-Sprit leaders Gary Neumann (Salish) and Lenny Hayes (Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate) on the historical roles and identities of Two-Spirit/Native 2SLGBTQ+ people and how colonization and historical and intergenerational trauma have impacted the Two-Spirit-LGBTQ+ Community. Together\, Gary and Lenny will share their knowledge to educate individuals\, families\, and organizations to understand and support children\, adults\, elders\, and relatives who may identify as Two-Spirit or Native LGBTQ+. \n\n\nIn this session\, the presenters will: \n\nShare the history and community roles of Two-Spirit people\nBring awareness to the high rates of violence placed on the Two-Spirit individuals\nDiscuss the behavioral health issues that impact the Two-Spirit Community\nInform participants how to be an ally to youth and adults who identify as Two-Spirit/Native LGBTQ.\n\n  \nGary Neumann Salish – Pend’Orielle\nGary Neumann is an enrolled member of the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Indian Nation and identifies as Two-Spirit. He has over 35 years of experience in prevention and human resource development. Gary has worked successfully with various tribal\, state\, and federal agencies in program design\, implementation\, and evaluation\, focusing on at-risk youth\, families\, and communities. Currently\, Gary works for Tribal Tech as a Training and Technical Assistance Coordinator and serves as a task lead for training SAMHSA staff. He developed a series of newsletters – Spirit-Honor-Inclusion\, focusing on Two-Spirit issues. Gary previously served as the Project Manager of the Rocky Mountain Tribal Access to Recovery III Program. He also served as the Training and Technical Assistance Director of the Native American Center for Excellence\, a national resource center for Native American substance abuse prevention providing culturally centered training\, technical assistance\, and information resource services to various Native and non-Native audiences throughout the United States. His work experience includes extensive knowledge of the Affordable Care Act (ACA)\, Tribal Law and Order Act (TLOA)\, and how it applies to American Indians and Alaska Natives\, having developed and conducted ACA trainings for Montana/Wyoming Tribes. Gary is skilled in assessment\, capacity building\, prevention specialist certification\, marketing\, grant writing\, methamphetamine prevention\, youth violence\, bullying and suicide prevention\, and sustainability. He has developed several culturally appropriate training curriculums and community-based organizing modules and presented and trained at national and international conferences throughout the United States\, Alaska\, and Canada. He is a certified SAPST Trainer/Facilitator. \nLenny Hayes Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate\nLenny Hayes is an enrolled member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribe and is the owner and operator of Tate Topa Consulting\, LLC and is currently in private practice specializing in Marriage and Family Therapy. He has extensive training in mental and chemical health issues that impact the Two-Spirit/Native LGBTQ+ and Native Community. Hayes speaks across the country on the impact of historical and intergenerational trauma\, violence\, child welfare issues\, and the impact of sexual violence on men and boys. Lenny is the former Missing and Murdered Two-Spirit Project Assistant for Sovereign Bodies Institute and serves as a board or committee member for StrongHearts Native Helpline\, Wac’ ang’a (Sweet Grass) Inc. Victim Services\, First Nations Repatriation Institute\, Southwest Indigenous Women’s Coalition\, National Quality Improvement Center on Tailored Services\, Placement Stability and Permanency for LGBTQ/Two-Spirit children and youth in foster care\, and the National Resource Center for Domestic Violence.

SUMMARY:Community Parades and Activism: LGBTQ Claiming its Space
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Viewing La Primera Parada & Panel Discussion\n  \n\nAn open discussion about LGBTQ/SGL activism in Chicago communities. A panel of Latin@ and African American LGBTQ/SGL leaders will discuss the daring experience of walking for the first time on their community parades (1993-1994). A second panel of young activists will react and ask questions contextualizing that historical moment to current efforts and together discuss how to move forward. Some of the panelists include Alden Bell\, Bonsai Bermúdez\, Charles Nelson\, David Gauna\, Julio Rodriguez\, Liliana Macias\, Mona Noriega\, Robert Castillo\, and Shelton Watson. \nThe event is presented by the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance in partnership with ADODI Chicago – an SGL brotherhood organization for men of African descent\, and ALMA – Association of Latina/o/x Motivating Action. DESCRIPTION:Travel with author and Jewish historian Irene Shaland to Australia\, from Sydney and Melbourne to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest\, to understand the land\, its people\, and their history. Discover how Aboriginal people played an important role in opening Australia to Jewish refugees escaping from the Nazi occupied Europe and how\, years later\, the descendants of these refugees were at the forefront of the struggle for the human rights of Aboriginal people. \nIn early December 1938\, a delegation of Aboriginal people marched to Melbourne in the Australian state of Victoria. This was not a protest a State or Federal government in defense of their own human rights: it was a brave action demanding Germany to stop the prosecution of the Jews of Europe. \nThe leader of this march\, William Cooper\, was the founder of the Australian Aboriginal League and an unsung hero of the Aboriginal human rights struggle. In his own country\, Cooper and his people had no legal rights and were officially classified as an equivalent of “flora and fauna.” At the time\, Australia maintained the “White Australia Polices” and considered Jews\, though not classified as “colored\,” to be the “others” who should not be issued entrance visas.

SUMMARY:Online Program - Breaking the Silence: Native American Boarding Schools
DESCRIPTION:Between 1869 and the 1960s\, hundreds of thousands of Native American children were forcibly abducted from their homes and families and placed in more than 350 government-funded\, and often church-run\, Indian Boarding schools. These children were subjected to horrendous conditions\, suffering physical\, sexual\, cultural\, and spiritual abuse and torture. \nThey were banned from speaking their Native languages\, from traditional and cultural practices\, and stripped of traditional clothing\, hair\, and personal belongings. The express intent was to implement cultural genocide through removal and “reprogramming” Native children to carry out systematic destruction of Native cultures and communities. Many of these children never returned home\, and their fates have yet to be accounted for by the U.S. government. \nJoin us for a poignant conversation with Dr. Samuel Torres\, Deputy Chief Executive Officer for the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition (NABS)\, as he highlights and addresses the history and ongoing trauma created by the U.S. Indian Boarding School Policy. \nTorres is expected to be accompanied by a boarding school survivor. There will be opportunities for questions after the discussion. \nReservations required.

DESCRIPTION:Join MALA for a fireside discussion centered on the leadership of women in the philanthropic and entrepreneurial space. Our special guest\, Khitam Masoud\, will sit down with MALA Co-Founder Zainab Khan to discuss her journey in philanthropy and social enterprise and share advice for other women navigating these fields.\n_______________\nAbout Khit:\nKhit is a first-generation Palestinian female immigrant born and raised in Northern California. At the age of 16\, she was emancipated by the Sacramento Courts as she avoided an arranged marriage to her first cousin. Khit has been on her own ever since with no relationship with her family or relatives since 1998.\n\nWorking multiple jobs at a time to provide for herself\, she has been trying to complete her first Bachelor’s degree since she graduated high school in 1999. Life lessons including; fighting cancer on her own\, managing mental health and disorders such as PTSD\, anxiety\, ADHD\, and depression\, and surviving through abusive relationships and sex crimes\, has made it very difficult in maintaining a 2.0 or higher G.P.A to complete a college education as a non-traditional adult student.\n\nAfter surviving cancer in 2007\, Khit moved to Chicago where she then learned more about how to get involved with not-for-profit organizations. For the past 6 years\, she has been volunteering and working at Chicago-based organizations including Imerman Angels\, a 1-on-1 cancer support organization\, as a Mentor. Angel. Khit has gained an overwhelming amount of experience and skills thanks to non-profit professionals in her life that have become some of her most trusted mentors today. Her passion for philanthropy and making an impact on women like her\, became the impetus for starting her own charity\, Blessons for Women (Blessons\, NFP). With more than 200 speaking engagements under her belt\, she has learned how to cultivate relationships within the Chicago community and beyond

Their long form poetry is a testament to decay and destruction of colonial structures as a regenerative force necessary for rebirth\, transition\, and survival. Their performance is a ceremonial offering to sacrit Indigenous Land\, QTNB2S ancestors\, and the reclamation of suppressed power.\nJoss Barton’s poem The Wagons Ain’t Here Yet… is a collection of visions\, hallucinations\, dispatches\, and warnings from the fourth dimension. Written in 2017\, Wagons is a psychedelic diary of transsexual femme longing\, drugs\, sexual desires\, and ancestral possession. The proud sons of a watchmaker\, Harry and his two brothers\, Mailekh and Moishe\, studied their father’s trade at an early age. Upon the German invasion of Poland\, when the Lenga family was upended\, Harry and his brothers never imagined that the tools and skills they learned from their father would be key to their survival.\nJoin us in conversation with Scott Lenga as he recounts the moving and harrowing story of the Holocaust through the eyes of his father and two uncles – the Lenga brothers\, three young men whose watchmaking skills\, rudimentary tools\, and an entrepreneurial spark – helped them survive Nazi concentration camps and stay together despite the odds\nFree to the public.
