DESCRIPTION:On the Sunday before Transgender Day of Visibility\, join us to celebrate LGBT+ culture with “Voices of the Proud: LGBT+ Composers”! The program features the beauty\, love\, grief\, playfulness\, creativity\, and pride of music by LGBT+ artists chosen from a call for submissions.\nThis event will be broadcast live on the Crossing Borders Music Facebook and YouTube channels.\nEnjoy Xenia St. Charles Gilbert’s “How to Spot a Trans Woman According to My Neurosurgeon\,” performed brilliantly by violist Seth Van Embden\, along with the clever wordplay of a voiceover by the composer herself!\nTony Doubek’s “Mind Over Matter” is his own\, brand new arrangement of the final movement what he calls his “3 movement piece depicting my experience living with Bipolar II” from his “collection of intensely personal pieces.” It is stunning\, intensely beautiful\, and hopeful.\nFrida V. de la Sota’s “elegía de una pandemia” captures the stillness\, mourning\, and grief of the almost universal sense of loss during the pandemic.\nThe livestream will share the world premiere of Rylan Gleave’s “biomimicry” for piano quintet. Rylan took the idea of biomimicry\, which he calls “the emulation of natural elements\, for the purpose of solving complex human problems” and asks\, “What if we apply this idea to music?”\nEthan Soledad’s lush and romantic “In effect it is this: that I love you” was “inspired by a love letter written by renowned WWI poet Wilfred Owen to his colonel\, mentor\, and fellow poet Siegfried Sassoon. Both literary legends were known for their raw depictions of the war in their poetry with Sassoon serving as a major influence to Owen’s own work. Both were also closeted homosexuals in a time and place where it was criminalized. DESCRIPTION:On March 25th\, we commemorate Greek Independence Day. Two hundred and one years ago\, the Greek struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire began. The Greek fight to end four hundred years of Ottoman Turkish oppression attracted the attention and support of people around the world. Consequently\, the Greek War of Independence became the first in line of “freedom struggles\,” in which a national or civil war for independence or sovereignty attracted would-be freedom fighters from around the world. \nIn this special NHM Discussion\, we will explore why the Greek War of Independence ignited such passion in non-Greeks and how the legacy of “Greek Freedom” served to create the idea of a universal “cause of freedom” that transcends national and ethnic borders. \nThis event will be recorded.

DESCRIPTION:A virtual conversation from South Side Community Art Center’s 3831/Voices Series. \n3831/VOICES is a new program series of conversations and lectures featuring Black artists\, scholars\, curators\, historians\, and arts workers that invite our community into their creative practices\, research\, and conceptual processes\, and more! 3831 takes after SSCAC’s exact numerical address in the historic Bronzeville neighborhood. Although we recognize ourselves as an iconic historical site for Black artistic and cultural advancement\, we continue to evolve as a contemporary hub for new thought practices\, creative practices\, and innovative frameworks being developed by a diverse array of amazing folks here in our city\, and beyond. \nAndrea and ebere’s multidisciplinary practices are informed by acts of care and storytelling\, that ultimately become actualized within the objects and projects they build out- individually and collectively. Skyla’s passion and dedication towards the creation\, management\, preservation and accessibility of archives\, with particular focus on BIPOC LGBTQIA+ collections\, ephemeral materials\, knowledge development\, and social justice has provided her with unique opportunities to work with diverse individuals\, communities and repositories at various capacities nationally and internationally.\n\nSkyla is also co-founder of The Blackivists\, a collective of trained Black memory workers who provide expertise on archiving and preservation practices to communities in the Chicago land area; and the inaugural Manager of Archives for Cook County Government under the Offices of the President of the Board of Commissioners.\nAs a legacy keeper\, she recently (March 2021) co-edited the zine publication Our Girl Tuesday: An Unfurling for Dr. Margaret T.G. Burroughs alongside Sarah Ross and Tempestt Hazel with an introduction by Mariame Kaba\, published by Sojourners for Justice Press.

Nandita is a graduate of the Bard College-International Center of Photography’s MFA program and teaches photography at SUNY Purchase. \n𝐀𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐤𝐚 𝐁𝐚𝐰𝐚 lives and works in Portland\, Oregon. Originally from New Delhi\, India\, she received an MFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA in the same from the Maharaja Sayajirao University\, Baroda\, India. \n𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐡 is a visual artist and choreographer based in NYC. He is the recipient of the Skowhegan\, Yaddo\, Residency Unlimited\, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts residencies. Along with the competitive New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. \n𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐆𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐚 𝐖𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬\, the panel moderator\, is an American of Bengali and Maharashtrian heritage\, she currently lives in and works from Portland\, OR. She brings an educator’s perspective to this fascinating series. \nLegacies of Justice\, March 3rd\, 7:00pm CST\nIn 2014 filmmaker Mairéad McClean was awarded the MAC International prize for her film No More. This meditation on the implications of Internment Without Trial in 1971 resonated the world over as evidence of torture and prisoner abuse emerged from Guantanamo Bay to Abu Ghraib. In Legacies of Justice we will screen the short film and discuss its explorations and symbolism. McClean\, daughter of civil-rights activist Paddy-Joe McClean\, interrogates concepts of security and the political contortions of conflict in this work. Together we will discuss its poetic meditation on these infringements on human rights in the name of security\, as we also bring examples like Rita Duffy’s painting\, Guantanamo amas amat\, and Paula McFetridge’s staging of Convictions in the Crumlin Road Courthouse\, to bear on the conversation.

DESCRIPTION:The Museum book club reads a wide range of books from the Nordic countries.\nThis is a free event and you can register by emailing museum@samac.org. \nHere are the upcoming book club books:\nFebruary\nAntiphony by Laila Stien\nMarch\nPakkis by Khalid Hussain \nThe books can be bought in the Museum Store. \nAbout Antiphony\nThe narrator\, a young social scientist who works for a newspaper in Oslo\, goes to Northern Norway on leave after a colleague tells her she lacks initiative. On the surface she is supposed to write a book about structural relationships among the Sami (formerly Lapps). However\, loneliness\, in spite of a good social life with her friends in Oslo\, a tense relationship with her own family\, and a feeling of stagnation in her career seem to be the main reasons for her going away. \nShe becomes acquainted with three generations of Sami women\, hears their stories and attempts to make sense of them. Soon she loses her role as impartial observer and becomes more involved in their lives. The more she discovers\, the less she feels she understands. \nThe novel presents a wonderful picture of Sami culture in transition and in the face of inevitable outside forces. In this sense it is a much more universal work demonstrating how an indigenous culture reacts to a dominant culture and what happens over the course of a relatively short period. DESCRIPTION:Swedish Settlements on the South Shore\nBy Kenneth Schoon \nImmigrants from Sweden were the first non-English speaking people to move into the Indiana Dunes region and establish settlements.  Their legacy can be seen today. \nThis program\, and its accompanying book\, note that these Swedes established more than a dozen local churches\, most of which are still active today.  They built homes out of logs\, lumber\, and bricks\, cleared and farmed the land\, worked for the railroads and the brick factories\, and established businesses\, some of which are still in business today.  Several of the early Swedes served in the Union army in the Civil War.  Nearly all got American citizenship\, and some were elected to political office. \nThe fourth of July was widely celebrated\, but so were Swedish traditions at Midsummer and the Christmas season.   Today descendants of Swedes still learn Swedish songs and dances and celebrate the traditions of their forbears.  Even non-Swedes know about Vikings and may eat Swedish meatballs.  Smörgåsbord has become an American word—though to Swedes it has slightly different meaning.  Swedes and their descendants have helped build the Calumet Area. \nKenneth Schoon is the author of “Swedish Settlements on the South Shore of Lake Michigan.” Although not a Swede\, he is married to the granddaughter of Swedish immigrants. His earlier works include Calumet Beginnings\, Dreams of Duneland\, and Shifting Sands\, all published by Indiana University Press\, and City Trees published by Stackpole Books. \nCost is free for Swedish American Museum Genealogical Society members; $10 for non-members to participate. DESCRIPTION:BOOK EVENT WITH OLIVER CRASKE – AUTHOR OF THE TELL ALL RAVI SHANKAR BIOGRAPHY\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nOnline: Conversation with “Indian Sun: The Life and Music of Ravi Shankar” Biographer and author Oliver Craske with Chicago based music writer Aaron Cohen \nIn his recent book “Indian Sun: The Life and Music of Ravi Shankar” (2020)\, London-based writer Oliver Craske presents readers with the first full portrait of the legendary Ravi Shankar\, a musician who influenced—and continues to influence—countless artists. In his book\, Craske describes the captivating\, restless workaholic-from his lonely and traumatic childhood in Varanasi to his youthful stardom in his brother’s dance troupe\, from his intensive study of the sitar to his revival of India’s national music scene. Craske has also authored “Rock Faces: The World’s Top Rock’n’Roll Photographers and Their Greatest Images\,” a survey of leading music photographers\, many of whom are featured in South Asia Institute’s exhibition\, Ravi Shankar: Ragamala to Rockstar. Craske\, who contributed much of the exhibition’s text\, will be in conversation with award winning Chicago music writer Aaron Cohen (Chicago Tribune\, DownBeat\, Washington Post\, The Nation\, NPR).

Christal’s awards include Best of Division\, First\, Second and Honourable Mentions in the Beadwork\, Quillwork and Diverse Arts categories at prestigious art shows such SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market in Santa Fe NM\, Heard Guild Museum Market in Phoenix AZ\, and Eiteljorg Museum Indian Market Indianapolis IN. At a young age\, Christal was taught how to bead and sew by her Mom.
