DESCRIPTION:BOOK EVENT WITH OLIVER CRASKE – AUTHOR OF THE TELL ALL RAVI SHANKAR BIOGRAPHY\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nOnline: Conversation with “Indian Sun: The Life and Music of Ravi Shankar” Biographer and author Oliver Craske with Chicago based music writer Aaron Cohen \nIn his recent book “Indian Sun: The Life and Music of Ravi Shankar” (2020)\, London-based writer Oliver Craske presents readers with the first full portrait of the legendary Ravi Shankar\, a musician who influenced—and continues to influence—countless artists. In his book\, Craske describes the captivating\, restless workaholic-from his lonely and traumatic childhood in Varanasi to his youthful stardom in his brother’s dance troupe\, from his intensive study of the sitar to his revival of India’s national music scene. Craske has also authored “Rock Faces: The World’s Top Rock’n’Roll Photographers and Their Greatest Images\,” a survey of leading music photographers\, many of whom are featured in South Asia Institute’s exhibition\, Ravi Shankar: Ragamala to Rockstar. Craske\, who contributed much of the exhibition’s text\, will be in conversation with award winning Chicago music writer Aaron Cohen (Chicago Tribune\, DownBeat\, Washington Post\, The Nation\, NPR).

SUMMARY:Schubert\, America\, and the Police
DESCRIPTION:DANK Haus German American Cultural Center\nPresentation and musical performance by Pauline Tan (mezzo-soprano) and Pierre-Nicolas Colombat (pianist) \nWhile many of classical music’s most revered performers\, ensembles\, and institutions are American\, the vast majority of “household names” in classical music are European. The result can feel like Americans are stuck in a never ending game of catch-up. This Eurocentric attitude ignores the deep influence that America had on some of Europe’s most significant figures. \nOne American in particular\, James Fenimore Cooper\, emerges as a uniting thread between individuals as diverse as Franz Schubert\, the Marquis de Lafayette\, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Cooper’s novels enjoyed a massive readership in Europe at a time in which it was undergoing widespread conservative reforms. These books\, which typically depict a collection of diverse characters in times of tumultuous upheaval\, such as in the Leather Stocking Tales trilogy\, proved to be an effective antidote to the Europamüdigkeit (Europe-weariness)afflicting European intellectual life. \nOn his deathbed and in the midst of revising drafts of Winterreise\, Schubert asked for a copy of this American writer’s latest book. Goethe kept notes in his diary of the long list of Cooper’s books he had read. As a testament to the power of the author’s oeuvre as propaganda\, Lafayette invited Cooper to live with him at his estate for several weeks in the hopes that he might feature as a cameo in the writer’s next novel. \nThe American influence was not limited to those who knew Cooper’s novels. Nikolaus Lenau\, one of Schumann’s favored poets\, went so far as to purchase a farm in Ohio and toured modern day New York state extensively. Although his American journey turned out to be a catastrophe\, the Austrian poet had long maintained that witnessing the American wilderness as well as its political project first hand would help him develop his poetic aesthetic. \nThis program features the standard German Romantic tropes of the Wanderer\, the wilderness\, Sehnsucht and Einsamkeit. Centered on the music of Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann as well as the poetry of Nikolaus Lenau and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe\, our selections will highlight the under-appreciated ways in which American audiences and performers can find agency in the context of typically Germanic Romantic repertoire. While the myth of America as the land of burgeoning opportunity rightfully incites the cries of many cynics\, this narrative nevertheless had deep and impactful reverberations in early 19th-century aesthetic movements. Roosevelt on February 19\, 1942\, Executive Order 9066 led to the incarceration of 120\,000 Japanese Americans during WWII.  Every year\, the Japanese American community in Chicago comes together to commemorate EO9066 as a reminder of the fragility of civil liberties in times of crisis and the importance of remaining vigilant in protecting the rights and freedoms of all. \nDay of Remembrance 2022 features a variety of speakers celebrating the passage of the Teaching Equitable Asian American Community History (TEAACH) Act.  Signed into law on July 9\, 2021\, the TEAACH Act makes Illinois the first state to mandate that Asian American history be taught in public schools.  Join us to learn why the TEAACH Act matters\, how the task of implementation is being addressed\, and how the Japanese American community is contributing to the effort.  The program will feature a showcase of classroom-ready resources for teaching about EO9066 and incarceration through a Chicago lens. \nChicago-based Ho Etsu Taiko will take the stage to perform a new work composed especially for Day of Remembrance 2022.  Ho Etsu Taiko blends the deep-rooted culture of Japanese American drumming with influences that inspire and celebrate the diversity of their performing members. \nMasks and vaccinations required.  There will be no refreshments served at this year’s event. \n  \nTHIS EVENT IS SPONSORED BY THE CHICAGO JAPANESE AMERICAN COUNCIL\, CHICAGO JAPANESE AMERICAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY\, JAPANESE AMERICAN CITIZENS LEAGUE – CHICAGO CHAPTER\, JAPANESE AMERICAN SERVICE COMMITTEE\, AND JAPANESE MUTUAL AID SOCIETY OF CHICAGO

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Operation Payback
DESCRIPTION:What We Didn’t Know Then\, What We Know Now\nProf. Luciuk is a renowned scholar in the field of Ukrainian studies specializing in the history of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada and the United States. He is a full professor of political geography at the Royal Military College of Canada.\n\nProf. Luciuk will discuss a book\, titled “Operation Payback: Soviet Disinformation and Alleged Nazi War Criminals in North America.” The book is a compilation of approximately 40 commentaries written by Prof. Luciuk in the past four decades\, along with documentation related to the topic of how Jewish and Ukrainian communities in the United States and Canada were manipulated with disinformation and set against each other since the 1960s in an overt plan to set both communities against each other.\n\nThe key document of the book is the translation of the KGB memorandum written in October 1985 that outlines Operation Payback (Retribution)\, which confirms that the KGB had several directorates created to advance Jewish demands that Nazi war criminals be brought to justice by alleging that many of these war collaborators were living among Ukrainian emigres. These allegations were repeated so often that they were presumed to be true.

This essay focuses on the history of Black Chicago—from DuSable to Harold Washington—and how Washington’s electrifying victory as the first Black mayor helped empower Barack Obama\, who was a community organizer in Chicago when Harold was mayor.

DESCRIPTION:The Museum book club reads a wide range of books from the Nordic countries.\nThis is a free event and you can register by emailing museum@samac.org. \nHere are the upcoming book club books:\nFebruary\nAntiphony by Laila Stien\nMarch\nPakkis by Khalid Hussain \nThe books can be bought in the Museum Store. \nAbout Antiphony\nThe narrator\, a young social scientist who works for a newspaper in Oslo\, goes to Northern Norway on leave after a colleague tells her she lacks initiative. On the surface she is supposed to write a book about structural relationships among the Sami (formerly Lapps). However\, loneliness\, in spite of a good social life with her friends in Oslo\, a tense relationship with her own family\, and a feeling of stagnation in her career seem to be the main reasons for her going away. \nShe becomes acquainted with three generations of Sami women\, hears their stories and attempts to make sense of them. Soon she loses her role as impartial observer and becomes more involved in their lives. The more she discovers\, the less she feels she understands. \nThe novel presents a wonderful picture of Sami culture in transition and in the face of inevitable outside forces. In this sense it is a much more universal work demonstrating how an indigenous culture reacts to a dominant culture and what happens over the course of a relatively short period. He earned an undergraduate degree from a French business school and holds an MBA from Roosevelt University (Chicago). As the first Honorary Consul General of the Comoros in a major U.S. city\, he looks forward to establishing commercial\, cultural\, and scientific relations between the Comoros Islands and the Midwest Region of the United States.\nIn 2013 the U.S. State Department confirmed Mr. Hachim as the new Honorary Consul General of the Comoros in Chicago. A few months earlier\, the Comorian Government\, under the leadership of His Excellency Dr. Ikililou Dhoinine\, had formally informed the U.S. government of its intention to appoint Mr. Hachim as the first Honorary Consul General of the Comoros in Chicago.\nThe Honorable Charif Hachim is the perfect person to promote\, cultivate and sustain a relationship between the Comoros and the Midwest Region of the United States due to his business background\, as well as his passion and understanding for both cultures.\nIn addition to his status as Honorary Consul General\, Mr. Hachim works full time as a Business Manager in the public sector.
