SUMMARY:Irish Art in Practice: Legacies of Justice
DESCRIPTION:The Irish American Heritage Center\, in partnership with the Consulate General of Ireland\, Midwest\, presents Irish Art in Practice. Join Jennifer Keating\, Ph.D. as she brings us through the world of Irish arts and artists\, and the living applications and impressions it makes on the world around us. Jennifer Keating is a Senior Lecturer and the Writing in the Disciplines Specialist in the William S. Dietrich II Institute for Writing Excellence. Most recently\, she served as Assistant Dean for Educational Initiatives in the Dietrich College for Humanities and Social Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. She brings an educator’s perspective to this fascinating series. \nLegacies of Justice\, March 3rd\, 7:00pm CST\nIn 2014 filmmaker Mairéad McClean was awarded the MAC International prize for her film No More. This meditation on the implications of Internment Without Trial in 1971 resonated the world over as evidence of torture and prisoner abuse emerged from Guantanamo Bay to Abu Ghraib. In Legacies of Justice we will screen the short film and discuss its explorations and symbolism. McClean\, daughter of civil-rights activist Paddy-Joe McClean\, interrogates concepts of security and the political contortions of conflict in this work. Together we will discuss its poetic meditation on these infringements on human rights in the name of security\, as we also bring examples like Rita Duffy’s painting\, Guantanamo amas amat\, and Paula McFetridge’s staging of Convictions in the Crumlin Road Courthouse\, to bear on the conversation.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Pulaski Day virtually with the Polish Museum of America (PMA) on Monday\, March 7\, 2022. Top officials from national\, state\, county\, and city governments and leaders of Polonian organizations and institutions will observe the State of Illinois annual recognition of the Polish American community by honoring the Revolutionary War hero Casimir Pulaski. Speakers will include Polish Ambassador Marek Magierowski; Consul General of Ukraine in Chicago Serhiy Koledov; Mayor Lori Lightfoot; Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs; Frank Spula\, National President of the Polish American Congress; Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas; Judge Aurelia Pucinski and State Representative Delia Ramirez. The program will feature performances by Mirosława Sojka-Topór\, Kamil Bundyra\, the Academy of Music of the Paderewski Symphony Orchestra\, and Tatra Mountains Cultural Foundation Ensemble\, along with filmed presentations\, and conclude with the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at Stanislaw Batowski’s painting of Pulaski at Savannah. Originally from New Delhi\, India\, she received an MFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA in the same from the Maharaja Sayajirao University\, Baroda\, India. \n𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐡 is a visual artist and choreographer based in NYC. He is the recipient of the Skowhegan\, Yaddo\, Residency Unlimited\, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts residencies. Along with the competitive New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. \n𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐆𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐚 𝐖𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬\, the panel moderator\, is an American of Bengali and Maharashtrian heritage\, she currently lives in and works from Portland\, OR. He has a PhD in English from the University of Chicago\, where he developed a series of free and interactive walks\, talks\, and reenactments dealing with Chicago’s past. These public history experiences have received local and national media attention and led to collaborations with cultural institutions from across the city. Westermann. His work\, which frequently centered on themes of birth and death\, was exhibited as part of the Chicago Imagists at the Hyde Park Art Center. His sculpture\, “Bird of Peace\,” known colloquially as “The Egg\,” is a well-known piece of public art in Nichols Park.

As an archivist\, liberatory memory and cultural worker Skyla is most concerned with supporting a community’s attempt to understand\, document and share its own history\, particularly those aspects that have not been well recorded. Skyla’s passion and dedication towards the creation\, management\, preservation and accessibility of archives\, with particular focus on BIPOC LGBTQIA+ collections\, ephemeral materials\, knowledge development\, and social justice has provided her with unique opportunities to work with diverse individuals\, communities and repositories at various capacities nationally and internationally.\n\nSkyla is also co-founder of The Blackivists\, a collective of trained Black memory workers who provide expertise on archiving and preservation practices to communities in the Chicago land area; and the inaugural Manager of Archives for Cook County Government under the Offices of the President of the Board of Commissioners.\nAs a legacy keeper\, she recently (March 2021) co-edited the zine publication Our Girl Tuesday: An Unfurling for Dr. Margaret T.G. Burroughs alongside Sarah Ross and Tempestt Hazel with an introduction by Mariame Kaba\, published by Sojourners for Justice Press.

DESCRIPTION:On March 25th\, we commemorate Greek Independence Day. Two hundred and one years ago\, the Greek struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire began. The Greek fight to end four hundred years of Ottoman Turkish oppression attracted the attention and support of people around the world. Consequently\, the Greek War of Independence became the first in line of “freedom struggles\,” in which a national or civil war for independence or sovereignty attracted would-be freedom fighters from around the world. \nIn this special NHM Discussion\, we will explore why the Greek War of Independence ignited such passion in non-Greeks and how the legacy of “Greek Freedom” served to create the idea of a universal “cause of freedom” that transcends national and ethnic borders. \nThis event will be recorded.

DESCRIPTION:Take a trolley tour through the Kozmopoliz\, also known as Cosmo Campoli’s Hyde Park\, as we celebrate the 100th birthday of the late artist.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nMany know Campoli’s Bird of Peace sculpture in Nichols Park\, but he lived in the neighborhood for over 40 years\, leaving his mark on everything from what was eaten at certain restaurants (Spaghetti A La Gargoyle anyone?) to what got shown at the 57th St. Art Fair. On this tour\, we’ll retrace his steps\, searching out the bits of Hyde Park’s past that survive to this day. \nTour Guide: Paul Durica is the Director of Exhibitions at the Newberry Library. He has a PhD in English from the University of Chicago\, where he developed a series of free and interactive walks\, talks\, and reenactments dealing with Chicago’s past. Masks and proof of vaccination required. \nThe trolley will load and unload passengers outside the Logan Center for the Arts\, 915 E 60th St. \n\n\nThis event is part of a day-long series of events\, Cosmo’s Cosmos: 100 Years of Birth\, Death\, and Rebirth. \nMarch 21\, 2022 will be the centenary of the birth of sculptor and Hyde Park resident Cosmo Campoli. Campoli (1922-1997) was part of the “Monster Roster” group associated with the Chicago Imagists in the 1950s\, including Leon Golub and H.C. Westermann. His work\, which frequently centered on themes of birth and death\, was exhibited as part of the Chicago Imagists at the Hyde Park Art Center. His sculpture\, “Bird of Peace\,” known colloquially as “The Egg\,” is a well-known piece of public art in Nichols Park. \n\nThis event is part of the Chicago Lost & Found series of events focused on Chicago art history created by Media Burn Archive. It is being held in partnership with the Smart Museum of Art and the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago.  It is presented as part of Art Design Chicago Now\, an initiative funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art that amplifies the voices of Chicago’s diverse creatives\, past and present\, and explores the essential role they play in shaping the now.

DESCRIPTION:The Irish American Heritage Center\, in partnership with the Consulate General of Ireland\, Midwest\, presents Irish Art in Practice. Join Jennifer Keating\, Ph.D. as she brings us through the world of Irish arts and artists\, and the living applications and impressions it makes on the world around us. Jennifer Keating is a Senior Lecturer and the Writing in the Disciplines Specialist in the William S. Dietrich II Institute for Writing Excellence. Most recently\, she served as Assistant Dean for Educational Initiatives in the Dietrich College for Humanities and Social Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. She brings an educator’s perspective to this fascinating series. \nDemands of Hope\, March 31st\, 7:00pm CST \nIn spring 2020\, in the throes of the Covid-19 lockdown\, Rita Duffy completed a residency at Trinity College confined like much of the world. She began sketching flowers akin to those she saw emerging in Dublin\, as well as highly detailed anatomic drawings of human organs\, exploring the strength and fragility of our systems in the face of a threatening pathogen. In Demands of Hope we will screen Duffy’s original animation\, Anatomy of Hope. We will also view key works by Ursula Burke like The Politicians\, as we explore the duality of hope: its yearning for something bright\, the preservation of what we treasure or the introduction of something new and our deep fears that such optimism may not manifest.
