DESCRIPTION:SSCAC is thrilled to partner with ILA Creative Studio for their G-to-G Coaching Sessions in a 3-part series of artist development resource workshops that intend to help close the gap of limited\, sustainable business resources\, specific to the needs of Black artists. \nILA Creative Studio’s G-to-G Coaching Sessions are an opportunity for professional practicing artists (18+) to have space to learn and grow in their respective fields – led by a mentor or coach that provides specific insights on a specific topic. These sessions help to translate effective ways for Black artists to achieve sustainability in their fields. \nSo much of our time as practicing artists goes into actually creating our wonderful art\, but we MUST create time where we learn about the necessary business etiquette. Each session will be led by coaches and teaching artists who will provide insight on a specific topic\, with the intention of assisting Black artists to work toward achieving sustainability in their field. \nSecond up\, “How To Balance Creative Work & Multiple Projects”\, led by Adia Sykes and Tiffany Johnson! Where they’ll cover all things project management\, artist development strategies\, and self-care advocacy within the arts. \nSnacks and sponsored coffee will be provided by Sip & Savor. DESCRIPTION:Symposium 2: “The Ethics of Exhibiting Artists with Neurodevelopmental and Mental Health Disabilities” \nArtists First Conversations: Inclusivity for Artists with Disabilities is a three-part symposium series held in tandem with the Chicago Cultural Center exhibition Artists First: Twenty-five Years of Studio Art at Thresholds. The primary goals of the symposium series are to increase scholarship in the field of self-taught art made by artists with neurodevelopmental and mental health disabilities\, with a focus on community receptivity historically and currently\, and to strengthen partnerships nationally and internationally in continuing the exchange of art and ideas. \nThe symposium’s panels will delve into 1) the relationship between art making and mental health\, 2) the ethics of exhibiting artists with neurodevelopmental and mental health disabilities\, and 3) how artists with disabilities fit into the greater art world. \n“The Ethics of Exhibiting Artists with Neurodevelopmental and Mental Health Disabilities” will be hybrid with an in-person panel at the Claudia Cassidy Theater at the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington Street\, Chicago\, IL 60602); the symposium will conclude with a Q&A with the panelists. Light refreshments will be available before (10–10:30 a.m.) and after (12–12:30 p.m.) the panel. Attendees from afar can tune into the livestreamed 90-minute discussion from 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m. (noon) central on Zoom. \nThe Chicago Cultural Center is wheelchair accessible and offers accommodations for attendees who are D/deaf or hard-of-hearing and or are blind or low-vision. SUMMARY:The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian 45th Anniversary Benefit & Awards Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian will honor U.S. Representative Sharice Davids for her significant contributions to Native American society\, culture\, and history at the 45th Anniversary Benefit and Awards Ceremony on November 19\, 2022\, at Writers Theater in Glencoe\, Illinois. \nOur premier event and annual awards ceremony is named for Dr. Carlos Montezuma\, a citizen of the Yavapai-Apache Tribe. He worked as a physician and social justice activist for Native American rights. Dr. Montezuma was the first Native American to earn an undergraduate and a medical degree from Northwestern University. In 1904 he became one of the founders of the Society for American Indians\, which focused on improving the physical\, social\, and economic well-being of Native Americans. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nU.S. Representative Sharice Davids will receive the 2022 Dr. Montezuma Award for her contributions to social activism that have advanced Native American people nationally. Rep. Davids is a Ho-Chunk Nation citizen and a member of the U.S. House\, representing Kansas’ 3rd Congressional District. In 2019\, she was sworn into the 116th Congress\, making her one of the first two Native American women to serve in Congress and the first openly LGBTQ+ representative to be elected in Kansas. She was raised by a single mother who served in the Army for 20 years. After graduating from Leavenworth High School\, she worked through Johnson County Community College and the University of Missouri-Kansas City before earning a law degree from Cornell Law School. \nAs a first-generation college student who worked the entire time she was in college\, Rep. Davids understands the importance of quality public schools and affordable higher education. That foundation allowed her to go on to a successful career focused on economic and community development\, which included time as a White House Fellow under President Barack Obama.

DESCRIPTION:Nearly four decades since its initial release\, Marvell Ginsburg’s The Tattooed Torah is widely regarded as a quintessential resource for early Holocaust education. A profound story of love\, hope\, and resilience\, The Tattooed Torah recounts the true story of a small Torah from Brno\, Czechoslovakia. This beloved illustrated book teaches the Holocaust not just as a period of destruction\, but also as an opportunity for redemption. \nGinsburg’s daughter\, Beth Kopin executive produced an animated short film adaptation of The Tattooed Torah. The adaptation is a three-generational endeavor that has also been passed down to Kopin’s son\, Brett Kopin\, who served as the film’s co-screenwriter with Marc Bennett. \nJoin us for a live reading\, Q&A\, and a short viewing of the film presented by Beth and Brett Kopin. Lois Roman\, a Trustee of the Memorial Scrolls Trust (MTS)\, will interview the Kopins and discuss the journey of the scroll that inspired The Tattooed Torah from pre-World War II through today. \nReservations required. \nMembers: Free; Non-Members: Museum Admission

DESCRIPTION:Crimes and Punishment in Sweden by Kathy Meade \nDid your Swedish ancestor commit a crime? Many Swedish researchers have discovered a note in the church books that an ancestor was imprisoned and desired to know more about the crime. This class begins by giving an overview of the Swedish criminal justice system and then show where one can find prison and court records. The presentation will also include case studies showing what one can learn from police\, prison\, and court records. \nKathy Meade is the North American representative for ArkivDigital AD AB\, a company that offers online access to newly photographed color images of Swedish church books and other historical records. She has been working with Swedish genealogy for almost twenty years. Ms. Meade serves on the advisory board for the Swedish American Genealogy Research Center at the Swedish American Museum in Chicago. She volunteers at the Swedish American Museum in Chicago and the Arlington Heights Memorial Library in Arlington Heights\, Il helping patrons with their Swedish genealogical research. \nCost is free for Swedish American Genealogical Society members; $10 for non-members to participate (use PayPal button below).
