Join us as we explore their place… where they lived\, worked\, and made a difference in Chicago through the safety net they wove. \nIt’s important in Chicago to recognize the contributions of women to social\, economic\, and educational reforms for urban development. Focusing on their work from 1870 – 1920 (BEFORE they had the vote)\, we consider where and how these women laid the foundations of reforms that support Chicago’s vibrant and diverse communities through local\, state\, and national policies that continue to this day. \nABOUT THE PROGRAM PRESENTER\nCAC docent Catherine Thomson is a professional property manager and an avid social justice activist. She is also one-half of HERstory\, a duo of women honoring the achievements of women through musical storytelling programs such as The 19th Amendment and the Power of the Vote\, Trailblazing Female Firsts\, and debuting March 9th\, A Century of Songwriting Sisters. Catherine celebrates HERstory every day\, but during Women’s History Month\, it is a delight to dig deep into the roots of reform and the Chicago women who cultivated them.

You will witness talented legal minds litigating the fate of Pericles\, known as the great hero of Athenian democracy. \nIn 451 B.C.E.\, Pericles dramatically changed the Athenian Constitution to revoke the citizenship of those without two Athenian parents\, claiming this was necessary to protect Athens from foreign influence. Tea is fabled to have existed in human culture for more than 4\,500 years\, but only as a daily beverage since the third century. Through tea we encounter the new and the old\, the pure and the everyday. \nIn this workshop\, you’ll experience a presentation of Chinese tea ceremony and a guide to various tea types. Along with this we’ll discuss brewing practices\, aesthetics\, and methods to bring harmony for ourselves and in gathering to share moments of subtle joy!! Limited to only 20 spots! \nWorkshop Highlights: \nPhilosophy of Tea: An introduction to tea preparation\, some methods\, and how the act of preparation is just as important as consuming a good cup of tea! \nTea Types: We will look at a few types of tea to familiarize ourselves with how they differ and their uses in daily and specialized practice. \nCreating a Mood: Setting up your space\, whether a complicated affair or a simple moment is important to bringing ourselves into awareness of the subtleties of flavor\, aroma\, and experience. DESCRIPTION:Through needle\, thread and color\, the art of Tatreez tells a story about the maker and history of their family. Tatreez\, or embroidery\, is a rich artistic tradition that has been passed down across generations in Arab culture. It is typically used on garments with patterns and colors varying between birds\, trees\, flowers and geometric symbols. Tatreez patterns can even be as specific to the village\, city or country a family is from. \nJoin us for a demonstration on Palestinian style Tatreez in the Grainger Science Hub and to learn about the importance of this art form. See Kaftans\, Thobes and Abayas that feature traditional patterns and embroidery brought out from our collection up-close during this event. \nThere will be a limited number of Tatreez kits to giveaway* for visitors at this event to practice their skills at home. \n*Tatreez Kit Giveaway will be on a first-come-first-serve basis until kits are no longer available.  \nProgramming takes place on a Wednesday\, which is free for Illinois residents.
