SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Vibrancy on the Brink
DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Germany\, Anke Fachmann was influenced by remarkable artist movements such as The Bridge (Die Brücke) and The Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter). A passion for art\, culture\, and design led her to initially study graphic design. She received a Bachelors in Graphic Design at the Freie Hochschule für Grafik-Design & Bildende Kunst in Freiburg\, Southern Germany. She then came to the US to pursue a graphic design career. Soon\, Fachmann’s focus changed and she rediscovered her passion for fine art. \nColor and structure are her tools to tell stories\, ​to leave room for the imagination. She paints with her fingers as well as with recycled materials such as paper and coffee sleeves to give her artwork an unique expression. \nAnke Fachmann on her technique and subject matter: \n“One day I worked on a big canvas using brushes. This felt tiring\, so I started to dip my hands and fingers into the paint. Over time\, I explored painting with recycled materials such as straws\, sponges\, and the paper sleeves from to-go coffee cups. Friends started saving the coffee sleeves for me and I think that is not a bad idea when it comes to recycling and our beloved planet!” \n“After experimenting with mixed media and abstract work\, I started to paint animals\, learning more and more about endangered species through this media. I decided to focus on them\, with the hope to prompt curiosity and to showcase their beauty and uniqueness.” \nFachmann uses her art to create awareness and to work together with environmental organizations and activists whenever she can. She lives in San Francisco. \nThis exhibition opens with a reception on Friday\, July 15\, from 6:00 to 9:00pm. The exhibition runs through Friday\, August 19. SUMMARY:Online Program - Breaking the Silence: Native American Boarding Schools
DESCRIPTION:Between 1869 and the 1960s\, hundreds of thousands of Native American children were forcibly abducted from their homes and families and placed in more than 350 government-funded\, and often church-run\, Indian Boarding schools. These children were subjected to horrendous conditions\, suffering physical\, sexual\, cultural\, and spiritual abuse and torture. \nThey were banned from speaking their Native languages\, from traditional and cultural practices\, and stripped of traditional clothing\, hair\, and personal belongings. The express intent was to implement cultural genocide through removal and “reprogramming” Native children to carry out systematic destruction of Native cultures and communities. Many of these children never returned home\, and their fates have yet to be accounted for by the U.S. government. \nJoin us for a poignant conversation with Dr. Samuel Torres\, Deputy Chief Executive Officer for the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition (NABS)\, as he highlights and addresses the history and ongoing trauma created by the U.S. Indian Boarding School Policy. \nTorres is expected to be accompanied by a boarding school survivor. There will be opportunities for questions after the discussion. \nReservations required.

They also rallied\, exclaiming solidarity with the Ukrainian resistance from 5\,000 miles away. \nWBEZ reporter Anna Savchenko\, who is Ukrainian\, bore witness to the rallies as both a compatriot and a Chicago journalist. She’s shed light on local stories of heartache and sources of hope. SUMMARY:Riddim Rite of Passage: A Sound Activation with Ajmal 'Mas Man' Millar
DESCRIPTION:Artist Ajmal ‘Mas Man’ Millar will facilitate a participatory sound activation referencing his Trinidadian heritage. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nWe invite you to join us with artist Ajmal ‘Mas Man’ Millar for a special rite of passage participatory sound activation using found metal\, which the artist uses often within their practice. Traditionally\, rites of passages have functioned as a critical tool of individual rejuvenation and cultural interconnection. \nAjmal’s use of metal within this program is inspired by and symbolic of the ‘riddim section’\, which is specifically linked to African diaspora percussions. \nEach participant is encouraged to bring found metal (without sharp edges) that they have access to. The session will encompass: \n– Introductions and group welcome where each participant will share their found objects with the group \n– Several exercises to build cognition\, individuality\, improvisation\, and harmony. \n– Ajmal will also provide a variety of metal rods and wooden sticks used to strike the metal\, thus collectively producing waves of sound in the likeness of steel drums. \n***The session will be sonically recorded\, and video documented.

SUMMARY:Art Talk: "Gunnar Widforss\, Painter of the National Parks"
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Alan Petersen\n\nThrough the Roaring Twenties and the first half of the Great Depression\, the Swedish-born landscape painter Gunnar Widforss (1879-1934) focused his discerning eye and passionate energy on the national parks of the American West. Due to Widforss’ untimely death at only age 55\, and because the rise of modernism in the early-twentieth century consigned many highly skilled realistic painters to obscurity\, Widforss’ legacy is largely unknown today. The amiable Swede led a bohemian life in search of beautiful and challenging landscapes to paint. Widforss dressed formally as he worked and always attracted wonder-struck onlookers when he painted in Yosemite Valley\, on the rim of Grand Canyon\, and the other locations he favored in the national parks. Park Service friends such as Ansel Hall and Stephen Mather\, as well as tourists\, marveled at the accuracy of his painting and the compelling way in which he was able to capture the dramatic landscapes. Widforss never resorted to sentimental or romanticized depictions\, so prevalent in depictions of western subjects. He very well may be viewed as one of the greatest artists to paint the West and his obscurity is a paradox. The story of Widforss’ life and work is one of great triumph in realistic painting\, and the tragedy of his anonymity and death is a captivating story of a Swedish expatriate who fell in love with the American landscape.\n\nToday\, Widforss’ work is known only to a small number of dedicated collectors\, the descendants of his family and friends\, and those who discover his gem-like paintings when they visit the national parks he depicted.\n\nCurator and author Alan Petersen has been uncovering Widforss’ fascinating story. He has published a catalogue raisonné of Widforss’ works and is working on a monograph on the artist. The catalogue raisonné is available online at gunnarwidforss.org.\n\nAlan Petersen\, Curator of Fine Arts for the Museum of Northern Arizona\, worked on the South Rim of Grand Canyon for three years before moving to Flagstaff to attend NAU in 1980. Alan has curated exhibitions of work by such notable artists as Gunnar Widforss\, Joella Jean Mahoney\, Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton\, Merrill Mahaffey\, Bruce Aiken\, Ed Mell\, and Curt Walters\, among many others.\n\nAlan recently published the Gunnar Widforss Catalogue Raisonné (2020) and continues his work on a monograph on Widforss’ life and art. In 2018\, he co-curated an exhibition of the artist’s work in collaboration with the Ljunbergmuseet in Sweden.\nBefore retiring\, Alan taught art history\, drawing\, and courses pertaining to the Colorado\nPlateau region at Coconino Community College in Flagstaff since 1992. The recollections and accounts will be curated as a permanent display at the Carruthers Center Library for residents\, visitors\, and young people to learn about their valuable heritage.

DESCRIPTION:The Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) is excited to host two free public programs for the Spotlight Series exhibition Yuge Zhou: Moon Drawings. The first of these programs is a poetry session in collaboration with the Chicago Poetry Center on Saturday\, September 10\, from 12pm-1pm CT\, coinciding with the Mid-Autumn (Moon) Festival. The poetry session will start with a poetry performance by Lisa Low followed by an ekphrastic workshop with participants create and share their poems in response to the themes of the exhibition.\n\nRegister here\n\nAbout the poet\nLisa Low is a poet and essayist from Maryland. Her poems appear or are forthcoming in Copper Nickel\, Ecotone\, The Massachusetts Review\, Poetry\, The Southern Review\, and elsewhere\, and her essay “How to Apologize” won the 2020 Gulf Coast Nonfiction Prize. She earned an MFA from Indiana University and a PhD in creative writing and literature from the University of Cincinnati\, where she served as associate editor at The Cincinnati Review. Her debut chapbook\, Crown for the Girl Inside\, won the 2020 Vinyl 45 Chapbook Contest and is forthcoming from YesYes Books.

Unable to perform inside Afghanistan today\, the group carries the flame of Afghanistan’s rich and complex musical heritage\, from its early history to the modern era. Included in the program will be traditional ghazals based on the Sufi-inspired poetry of Rumi (who was born in Afghanistan)\, Afghan folk music\, and the iconic hits of legendary singer Ahmad Zahir. \nQais Essar\nQais Essar is an Afghan-American musician\, based in Phoenix\, Arizona. A rabab player and songwriter\, he is most noted for the song “The Crown Sleeps” from the film The Breadwinner\, which won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Original Song at the 6th Canadian Screen Awards in 2018. DESCRIPTION:Join CJE SeniorLife Holocaust Community Services and Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center (IHMEC)  for an evening with Dr. Martin Dean\, renowned Holocaust historian\, author\, former war crimes investigator\, and researcher with the Babiy Yar Holocaust Memorial Center. Dr. Dean will examine the complex history of the Babiy Yar ravine\, where more than 33\,000 Jewish men\, women\, and children were murdered in just two days. Incorporating new research\, witness testimony\, and images from a 3-D model curated by the Babiy Yar Holocaust Memorial Center\, Dean will reconstruct the landscape as it existed on September 29-30\, 1941\, and describe the route taken by the Jews into the ravine. \nThis gathering will include music by internationally renowned cellist\, composer and vocalist Ian Maksin\, remarks by Holocaust Community Services and IHMEC; the launch of Volume II of Never Heard Never Forget– a new collection of narratives in memoriam and honor of Chicago Russian-speaking Survivors; and a candle-lighting ceremony with local Survivors. The program will be conducted in English with simultaneous Russian translation. A virtual viewing option will be available. \nComplimentary docent-led tours of IHMEC’s gallery focused on the Holocaust in the Soviet Union will run from 4:00 – 5:15 pm. The program will start at 5:30 pm. We invite you to this in-person conversation and Q&A to celebrate Hoogstraten’s work and the release of her new book\, Dancing for Our Tribe: Potawatomi Tradition in the New Millennium.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhotographer and Citizen Potawatomi Sharon Hoogstraten has created a permanent record of present-day Potawatomis wearing the traditional regalia passed down through the generations\, but modified to reflect the influence and storytelling of contemporary life:   \n“In the last ten years of photographing and listening to personal stories\, it is regalia that forms the basis of my cultural exploration. Through my portraits\, I know these Potawatomi descendants are living modern lives\, while reflecting deeply on the ancestors whose footsteps we tread on. They are not wearing ‘costumes’ and unlike street clothes\, each dancer knows exactly where their clothing comes from and what it means. In charming ways\, artifacts of modern life make an appearance – a Nike sock\, Converse shoes\, beaded Hello Kitty medallion\, etc. Some are in full regalia\, and others\, just a ribbon shirt. These are contemporary Native people. What is most compelling to me is that they are both preserving and evolving ceremony and handcrafts for the seven generations going forward. I’ve titled this body of work Dancing for Our Tribe—Potawatomi Tradition in the New Millennium in honor of our dancers and because photography is my dance.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis intimate conversation with Sharon Hoogstraten is free for Mitchell Museum Members and $10 for non-members. DESCRIPTION:Since the 2015 premiere of “Hypocrisy of Justice\,” collaborating artists Dana Hall\, Cheryl Lynn Bruce\, and Kerry James Marshall have expressed interest in further developing and remounting the project. There has also been an interest expressed by the artists\, the Hyde Park Jazz Festival\, the Logan Center for the Arts\, the University of Chicago Presents\, various South Side organizations\, and several departments at the University of Chicago in building a convening in connection with the performances to engage in cross-sectoral conversations centering the many structural issues the novel brings forth\, particularly intersecting inequities within systems and institutions\, along with the lived experience of confinement\, redemption\, hope\, and the idea of home. On Saturday\, October 8th\, 2022\, the Chicago community is invited to participate in four 75–minute moderated discussions and other activations with activist/organizers\, scholars\, journalists\, practitioners\, and artists. SUMMARY:Reflections on 1919 with Eve L. Ewing
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation on 1919\, Black Chicago and Resilience. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nA hot summer day set Chicago ablaze in 1919. Seventeen-year-old Eugene Williams crossed an invisible line in Lake Michigan that divided the segregated shores\, and he was killed by a group of white beachgoers. His death sparked a deadly 13-day riot. The fighting spread throughout the city\, then throughout the country in what became known as the Red Summer. In Chicago\, 38 people died\, more than 500 were injured\, and thousands were left homeless. \nThe ignition of the Red Summer proved that racism and prejudice had always existed in the north; it was just quieter here. And it’s a pervasive silence that’s lingered over a century – the scars of the Red Summer are still present\, open and bleeding in the underlying systems of inequity today. \nDr. Eve L. Ewing\, Chicago-based sociologist and poet\, explored the Red Summer and expanded on its lasting impact in her second collection of poems\, titled 1919. The book was recently adapted for the stage by J.
