SUMMARY:Mutinous Women: How French Convicts Became Founding Mothers of the Gulf Coast

Register in advance here. \nJoin us as Joan DeJean and Jack McCord use maps from the Newberry collection to recreate the European settlement of the vast territory in North America that the French named Louisiana\, and to tell the story of one remarkable woman\, Marie Baron. \nOn February 27\, 1720\, Marie Baron and 95 other female inmates who had been serving time in a notorious Parisian prison were abandoned on an uninhabited island off the Gulf Coast. Most of the women had\, like Marie Baron\, been falsely charged with “public prostitution.” Those who survived their deportation on a ship named La Mutine\, “the Mutinous Woman\,” forged such remarkable lives that their impact on this country continues\, three centuries later. Their lives are recounted in Joan DeJean’s new book\, Mutinous Women: How French Convicts Became Founding Mothers of the Gulf Coast. \nIn Louisiana\, Marie Baron became a person of note and the wife of Jean François Dumont—a mapmaker responsible for many extraordinary maps in the Newberry collection. Dumont recorded events in Louisiana’s history that he himself had not witnessed but that his wife had\, embedding her perspective into his vision of the European settlement of North America. \nSigned copies of Joan DeJean’s book Mutinous Women are available for purchase online from the Newberry Bookshop. \nThis event is cosponsored by the Alliance Française de Chicago.

His poetic output\, his appearances during public ceremonies\, his charity\, and his patronage of arts and architecture enhanced his reputation as a universal ruler with a well-rounded character. \nBehind that public façade\, Süleyman led a complicated life. He grew up with an overbearing father whose legacy was an advantage and a burden. Defying established practice\, he married a concubine named Hürrem whose love and affection became his true refuge. Both In-Person & Virtual options are available. \nWhen Michael Reese Hospital opened its doors in 1881 it was one of few hospitals to admit patients regardless of their race and religion. Now the hospital’s sole remaining building\, the Singer Pavilion\, is poised to anchor the first phase of the $3.8 billion Bronzeville Lakefront megadevelopment on Chicago’s South Side. Graduate students in Architecture from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\, University of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee and 5th Year Undergraduate students in Architecture from Illinois Institute of Technology have been given the opportunity to creatively redesign the Singer Pavilion to meet these aspirations. \nIn this panel discussion moderated by CAC CEO Eleanor Gorski\, we will explore the design ideas and discuss the role of megadevelopments in revitalizing neighborhoods. How can students and local communities meaningfully participate in these important development partnerships? Chicago is a hub for architectural education. Both In-Person & Virtual options are available. \nWard Miller\, the Executive Director of Preservation Chicago\, will announce the 2023 Chicago 7 Most Endangered and share the history\, threat and recommendations for each selection. \nDespite seemingly impossible odds\, the public interest and attention generated by Preservation Chicago’s Chicago 7 Most Endangered list\, coupled with dedicated advocacy has resulted in a remarkable number of preservation victories over the years. \nIn celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Chicago 7 Most Endangered program\, a brief retrospective will highlight notable wins and losses. \nAIA/CES Credits: 1 LUs \nPRESENTER: WARD MILLER\nWard Miller is the executive director of Preservation Chicago\, a position he has held since 2013. For more than 30 years\, Miller has advocated for the preservation of Chicago’s historic buildings. He spent two decades on the issues committee for Landmarks Illinois and served as vice president of Logan Square Preservation for 15 years. He also helped the City Club of Chicago in its efforts to save the Chicago Theatre\, the Page Brothers Building and several buildings on Block 37. Prior to his current role\, Miller worked on many other restoration projects including Holy Family Church\, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Heller House and the grand staircase at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Harris is among a group of historians who have turned to their own family and personal experiences as inspiration for writing history. The Newberry’s collections on local history and genealogy provide a productive intellectual context for her work. \nIn this program\, Dr. Harris will discuss with the Newberry’s Daniel Greene what it means for her\, as a professional historian\, to turn to her own and her family’s life as an inspiration for writing history. \nThe David L. We will have German Bier on tap and food for purchase!  \nAfter the debauchery of Faschingszeit (carnival season)\, we have started into Fastenzeit (lent). Fortify yourself for this time of austereness by trying some “liquid food” – the genius invention of 17th century Paulaner monk Salvator who decided to help his fasting brothers by brewing a batch of “strong beer” which was rich in nutrients and calories. \nTo this day\, all of Bavaria’s breweries create a version of Starkbier during lent. Just like the originator\, Salvator from the Paulaner Brewery\, most varieties end with the “-ator” appendix: Optimator\, Triumphator\, Maximator\, Terminator\, and countless others. SUMMARY:Stained-Glass in Chicago's Synagogues
DESCRIPTION:When we think of stained glass windows\, we often think of Churches. Synagogues also have a rich tradition of stained-glass windows. Join us as we explore how these windows beautify sacred spaces across Chicago. \nIn 2021 Chicagoans were alerted to the possibility of the Loop Synagogue closing due to the impact of the pandemic. Fortunately\, the synagogue has recovered\, but the possibility raised concern about the fate of its magnificent stained glass window\, “Let There be Light” by Abraham Rattner. While this is undoubtedly the city’s best-known synagogue stained-glass window\, there are many others\, ranging from nineteenth century anonymous works to some by well-known artists. We will feature them in the program. \nThis presentation will expand our understanding of stained-glass windows in area synagogues as we explore the artists behind these windows and what happens to the windows when synagogues move and/or close. \nThis is a virtual program with a $15 registration fee and is free for CAC Members \nPRESENTER: SUSAN JACOBSON\n \nSusan Jacobson has been a docent since 2008 and gives nine different tours. She is co-director of Synagogues by Bus and Tiffany Treasures. Prior to becoming a docent\, Susan enjoyed a 40-year career in academic librarianship at the University of Pennsylvania\, Columbia University\, and the University of Illinois in Chicago.

The program will be available to view on our YouTube channel starting on 4/2; we will send the URL to registrants. \nIn celebration of International Children’s Book Day\, join us for insight into the Newberry’s little-known collection of Spanish-language books for children and youth\, and learn about the importance of children’s literature in facilitating discussions about critical social and emotional issues. DESCRIPTION:What can Chicago’s ballparks tell us about the evolution of our city? Pulitzer Prize winning architecture critic Paul Goldberger will discuss the connection between American cities and America’s favorite pastime. \nThis program is $15 to attend and $7 for CAC Members. \nIn a discussion of his 2019 book Ballpark: Baseball in the American City\, Goldberger offers some valuable context about how baseball and ballparks have shaped our cities\, both physically and psychologically. He tracks the evolution of baseball’s tastes in stadium location and design and why they matter. He explores how the architecture of ballparks\, reflects how we view our cities and the game and how the two relate to each other. \nA book signing will take place at the conclusion of the program. Books will be available at the CAC design store. \nAUTHOR: PAUL GOLDBERGER\n \nPaul Goldberger\, a contributing editor at Vanity Fair\, began his career at The New York Times\, where he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism for his writing on architecture. Later\, and for 15 years\, he was architecture critic for The New Yorker. He is the author of many books\, most recently Ballpark: Baseball in the American City (May\, 2019). Goldberger teaches at the New School and lectures widely around the country on architecture\, design\, historic preservation\, and cities.

DESCRIPTION:This intimate event brings co-curators for ReFramed and ReCovered into conversation around the many benefits that trees impart to cities. Learn about the vision and themes of these complementary exhibits and join the curators for a gallery tour. \nThis program is $15 for admission and $7 for CAC Members. \nIn “ReCovered: Chicago’s Urban Tree Canopy” we consider the many benefits of lining our streets with trees. This immersive exhibit connects people to an element of nature we are inherently drawn to but often ignore as integral to the livability of cities and resilience of neighborhoods. Through the exhibit’s interactivity\, we can sense how trees serve to soften the hard edges of our built surroundings. \nThe companion exhibit\, “ReFramed: The Future of Cities in Wood\,” transitions from horizontal\, protective cover to a soaring vertical space\, introducing visitors to a very different function for trees in the city: buildings constructed from mass timber\, a new structural material which holds great promise for sustainable development and breathtaking design. \nHear from Ryan Gann and Ian Spula\, co-curators on ReCovered and ReFramed\, respectively. The conversation will be moderated by CAC’s Director of Exhibitions\, Eve Fineman. \nAt the conclusion of the program\, attendees are invited to tour both exhibitions with the curators.

SUMMARY:Walk Like a Preservationist
DESCRIPTION:How can you look at an historic building and know that it should be preserved or landmarked? Join Adam Rubin\, CAC Director of Interpretation\, and member of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks\, and learn what to look for to determine if a building qualifies for preservation designation. \nChicago’s historic resources lend our city its unique sense of place. But what does it take to legally ensure a building’s protection? How are historic construction materials cared for differently than newer materials? And what will we need to do differently to protect a newer and expanded class of culturally significant sites as they become “historic”? \nThis program is $15 to attend and $7 for CAC Members. \nThis outdoor program will focus on sites near the CAC and the Chicago River and will involve walking less than a mile. The program will begin and end at the CAC. \nPROGRAM SPEAKER: ADAM RUBIN\n \nAdam Rubin is an architectural historian and has worked as a researcher\, writer and preservation educator in cities across the country. He currently serves as Director of Interpretation at the Chicago Architecture Center. Prior to assuming this position\, Adam contributed work to an historic resources study of properties along Chicago’s North Lake Shore Drive\, with an emphasis on the documentation of Modernist residential high-rises along the lakefront. Previously\, Adam has developed and led public education initiatives and outreach programs focused on historic resources and landscapes at Docomomo US\, Landmark West\, the Brooklyn Historical Society and the Los Angeles Conservancy.
