SUMMARY:Balzekas Museum Award Dinner Honoring "Saulute" Sunlight Children's Aid"
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture honors exceptional individuals who\, through their talents\, efforts\, and achievements\, have distinguished themselves and contributed to the betterment of humanity. The Award is the highest and longest-standing civic honor of its kind outside of Lithuania. The roster of former honorees includes civic and cultural leaders\, physicians\, artists\, scholars\, diplomats\, and even two Lithuanian Presidents. \nThis year\, the Award of Excellence will be presented to the Illinois-based charity “Saulutė” ~ Sunlight Children’s Aid for Lithuania and posthumously to the organization’s founder\, Mrs. Indrė Tijūnėlis. Born from her initiative\, vision\, and resolve\, Sunlight Children’s Aid has brought light to hundreds of Lithuania’s neediest children and raised over $4 million dollars to date\, thanks to the volunteers and donors who lent a hand along the way. Now in its thirtieth year with the next generation of leaders at its helm\, Sunlight Children’s Aid continues to grow and expand its reach to ensure that all Lithuania’s children thrive and achieve their fullest potential. \nThe Award dinner\, which is also the Museum’s annual fundraiser\, is a long-standing tradition and a much-anticipated social event of the calendar year. This year’s attendees will get a ‘behind-the-scenes’ viewing of notable objects in the Museum’s collections including recently acquired paintings\, as well as photographs\, films\, and documents ‘rediscovered’ during our digitization process. \nPlease join us on Saturday\, December 3\, 2022\, at 6 p.m. at the Balzekas Museum\, 6500 S. DESCRIPTION:Join the National Hellenic Museum’s Virtual Book Club! \nIn December\, we will be discussing The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break by Steven Sherril. \n Book Club is free to join and meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7 PM CST via Zoom. \n  \nMore about The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break: \nFive thousand years out of the labyrinth\, the Minotaur finds himself in the American South\, living in a trailer park and working as a line cook at a steakhouse. No longer a devourer of human flesh\, the Minotaur is a socially inept\, lonely creature with very human needs. But over a two-week period\, as his life dissolves into chaos\, this broken and alienated immortal awakens to the possibility for happiness and to the capacity for love. \nSteven Sherrill is a graduate of UNC Charlotte and holds an MFA in poetry from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. The recipient of a NEA Fellowship for Fiction\, he has published four novels and one book of poetry. His debut novel\, The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break\, was published in the UK and translated into eight languages. Neil Gaiman selected it as one of six audiobooks to launch “Neil Gaiman Presents” for Audible.com. A prolific painter and nascent musician\, Sherrill is now a professor of English & Integrative Arts at Penn State Altoona.

DESCRIPTION:SSCAC is thrilled to partner with ILA Creative Studio for their G-to-G Coaching Sessions in a 3-part series of artist development resource workshops that intend to help close the gap of limited\, sustainable business resources\, specific to the needs of Black artists. \nEach session will is led by coaches and teaching artists who will provide insight on a specific topic\, with the intention of assisting Black artists to work toward achieving sustainability in their field. \nILA Creative Studio’s G-to-G Coaching Sessions are an opportunity for professional practicing artists (18+) to have space to learn and grow in their respective fields – led by a mentor or coach that provides specific insights on a specific topic. These sessions help to translate effective ways for Black artists to achieve sustainability in their fields. \nWe have some insights for you! \nSecond up\, “Marketing and Branding for Artists”\, led by Amanda Harth. Where she’ll cover all things branding\, marketing\, and art directing strategies for artists and creative entrepreneurs! \n\n\n\n\n\nAmanda Christine Harth is a teaching artist\, researcher\, and entrepreneur. She explores the origin stories of fashion’s subcultures and her findings are presented through exhibitions\, discussions\, and interactive workshops. She was born and raised on the Southside of Chicago in the West Pullman neighborhood. She studied fashion at the Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago and owned a clothing company that evolved into a resource for independent designers. \n“Connecting with people over the language of style and how others connect through garments has been a driving force behind my practice. My work is a constant study on the history of textiles and garments in underserved communities impacting change on a global economy. As my craft evolved I became more focused on the individuals in the garments and their stories. I want to create opportunities for people to connect and share their experiences with clothing.” \n\n\n\n\nWe’re excited to have Amanda and her expertise help guide you in the realm of marketing and branding\, for an afternoon of connecting and learning. \nVery limited spots are available. DESCRIPTION:Through the years\, the land and water around Chicago have been radically altered. In 1900\, the river was reversed. Meanwhile\, Michigan Avenue by Grant Park used to be lakefront property! Join us for a virtual presentation as we explore the ebb and flow of our celebrated lake and river. \nStanding at upper Wacker Drive and Columbus\, it’s always astonishing to remember that before 1803\, you would be wading in Lake Michigan. The modifications that have been made to the Chicago River have included dredging\, channeling\, damming\, tunneling\, legal decisions and breaching it at its South Branch headwaters to flow away from Lake Michigan. Likewise\, we have altered the shoreline of Lake Michigan and struggled with it as it fluctuated about six feet from a record low in 2013 to a record high in 2022. \nSpeaker: Kevin Griebenow \nKevin is a civil engineer with more than 25 years of experience inspecting and assessing the safety of dams. A CAC docent since 1993\, Kevin leads tours for guests of all ages. He has given presentations on structural engineering\, innovations in construction materials\, the construction and engineering feats of the 1893 World’s Fair and the design history of dams.

How does an austere financial district transform into a vibrant 24-hour neighborhood\, and who will call this neighborhood home? \nIn many ways\, the fate of the LaSalle Street corridor and the broader downtown are intertwined. If the most viable future for downtown is flexible adaptation to a mix of uses\, there is no better place to test this hypothesis than along this iconic office corridor. Recognizing this\, the City of Chicago recently launched a planning initiative for a reimagined LaSalle Street\, freeing up all-important tax increment financing (TIF) and inviting development proposals. \nHowever\, there are questions about the challenges LaSalle Street must overcome: namely\, what is the prescription for its aging building stock? Will tax incentives be sufficient to spark investment in complex residential conversions and protection of the corridor’s landmark architecture? And how central is a redesign and greening of the public realm to LaSalle’s long-term success or failure? DESCRIPTION:Through the years\, the land and water around Chicago have been radically altered. In 1900\, the river was reversed. Meanwhile\, Michigan Avenue by Grant Park used to be lakefront property! Join us as we explore the ebb and flow of our celebrated lake and river. \nStanding at upper Wacker Drive and Columbus\, it’s always astonishing to remember that before 1803\, you would be wading in Lake Michigan. The modifications that have been made to the Chicago River have included dredging\, channeling\, damming\, tunneling\, legal decisions and breaching it at its South Branch headwaters to flow away from Lake Michigan. Likewise\, we have altered the shoreline of Lake Michigan and struggled with it as it fluctuated about six feet from a record low in 2013 to a record high in 2022. \n$15 to Attend\, FREE for CAC Member \nSPEAKER: KEVIN GRIEBENOW\nKevin is a civil engineer with more than 25 years of experience inspecting and assessing the safety of dams. A CAC docent since 1993\, Kevin leads tours for guests of all ages. If the most viable future for downtown is flexible adaptation to a mix of uses\, there is no better place to test this hypothesis than along this iconic office corridor. Recognizing this\, the City of Chicago recently launched a planning initiative for a reimagined LaSalle Street\, freeing up all-important tax increment financing (TIF) and inviting development proposals. \nHowever\, there are questions about the challenges LaSalle Street must overcome: namely\, what is the prescription for its aging building stock? Will tax incentives be sufficient to spark investment in complex residential conversions and protection of the corridor’s landmark architecture? DESCRIPTION:Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center\, in association with MGM Television\, SIPUR\, Toluca Pictures\, Alice Communications\, and Menemsha Films\, will host the North American premiere of The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes on January 19\, 2023. \nThe Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes unearths secret recordings of Adolf Eichmann\, one of the chief architects of the Holocaust’s Final Solution\, which definitively shows his active involvement in the planning and implementation of one of the greatest atrocities in world history. Recorded in Buenos Aires in 1957 by Dutch journalist and former SS-Officer Willem Sassen with the intention to prove the Holocaust did not happen as portrayed and without Hitler’s knowledge\, these tapes show the opposite and expose Eichmann\, in his own voice\, stunningly contradicting claims he made during his eventual trial for crimes against humanity\, war crimes\, and crimes against the Jewish people. The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes sheds light on the hidden forces that concealed the recordings\, altering the arc of history as we have understood it for more than 70 years\, and provides irrefutable proof against Holocaust denial and the pernicious antisemitic hatred from which it springs. \nOriginally premiered as the opening film of the renowned documentary festival DOCAVIV and released as a documentary series on Israel’s tv-network KAN 11\, MGM Television\, SIPUR\, Toluca Pictures\, Alice Communications\, Menemsha Films\, and Illinois Holocaust Museum will bring a feature-length version of The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes to North America\, beginning with its January 19 premiere in Skokie. The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes has already received worldwide attention\, with prominent coverage in The New York Times\, CNN\, NPR\, L’Express\, and The Times of Israel. \nThe film premiere will be followed by a distinguished panel discussion with Director Yariv Mozer\, Executive Producer Emilio Schenker\, and world-renowned Holocaust experts Dr. Michael Berenbaum\, American Jewish University\, and Dr. Peter Hayes\, Professor\, Northwestern University. Paul’s recent work includes the LEED Platinum-certified Zurich North America Headquarters in Schaumburg\, Illinois\, and the Viceroy hotel in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood. His work in Asia focuses on tall and supertall buildings\, with key projects in Beijing\, Shanghai\, Shenzhen\, Guangzhou and Wuhan. Paul received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Virginia Tech. He has membership with the AIA\, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat and the Urban Land Institute\, and is a LEED Accredited Professional.\nSPEAKER: CINDY CHAN ROUBIK\nCindy Chan Roubik is a Deputy Commissioner with Chicago’s Department of Planning and Development (DPD) leading the Central\, North and Northwest Planning Regions. Recently\, she has managed the LaSalle Street Reimagined initiative\, the Central City Recovery Roadmap\, the Bronzeville Lakefront project and updates to the Fulton Market Innovation District Plan and Chicago River Design Guidelines. Cindy is a 2022 Fellow of University of Chicago’s Civic Leadership Academy program and is a LEED accredited professional. Prior to civil service\, she worked as a licensed architect for a local architecture firm on several high-rises and historic rehabilitation projects. Upon graduation from McGill University’s Architecture School\, Cindy was awarded the AIA Henry Adams Medal for the top student in her graduating class\, and the RAIC Gold Medal Award for most outstanding thesis. Cindy was also awarded the Alpha Rho Chi Medal Award for leadership and service. \nSPEAKER: LEON WALKER\nAs the Managing Principal of DL3 for the last 20 years\, Leon works closely with municipalities\, anchor institutions\, and Fortune 500 companies to implement projects that are sensitive to a neighborhood’s character while creating economic opportunities for local residents. His cutting-edge community development projects have generated thousands of jobs and brought grocery stores and medical services into the food and healthcare deserts on Chicago’s South Side. Over the next 10 years\, his vision is to help create 10\,000 jobs and 10 million square feet of new commercial space in Chicago’s neighborhoods. \nPrior to taking on the leadership of DL3 Realty\, Leon worked in corporate real estate services at Jones Lang LaSalle\, and in real estate capital markets at Citicorp Securities. A graduate of the University of Chicago’s Law School\, Leon also holds a Master of Business Administration from Booth School of Business and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan. Advance registration required. \nIn-Person Registration \nLivestream Registration \nJoin us for a conversation with historians Tara Zahra and Kevin Boyle about Dr. Zahra’s new book\, Against the World: Anti-Globalism and Mass Politics Between the World Wars. They will discuss how nationalism\, rather than internationalism\, came to ensnare world politics in the early twentieth century. \nBefore World War I\, enthusiasm for a borderless world seemed to be gaining traction. And yet a backlash against globalization was growing. As the war progressed\, air escaped from the globalist balloon in the United States and across Europe\, where war and disease led to mass societal upheaval. \nAgainst the World will be available for purchase in the Newberry Bookshop\, as will Dr. Boyle’s recent book\, The Shattering: America in the 1960s. Both authors will sign books after the program.
