Don’t miss this important exploration. \nAbout John W.I. Lee:\nJohn W.I. Lee is a Professor of History at UC Santa Barbara. SUMMARY:Community Insights: Awareness and Well-Being in the South Asian Community
DESCRIPTION:In South Asian communities\, mental health issues are often swept under the rug. Because it is culturally stigmatizing to talk about one’s feelings\, some people are denied or have no access to mental health resources. \nNumerous studies have shown that South Asian immigrants experience high rates of mental health problems\, sometimes higher than their peers and the lack of access has serious consequences. \nIn an effort to break the taboo and start a healthy conversation about mental health among South Asian communities\, South Asia Institute has organized “Community Insights: Awareness and Well-Being in the South Asian Community” on Saturday\, March 2\, 2024. \nJoin us for this insightful event led by Rohit Agrawal\, PsyD of Center Focused Therapy\, where we will highlight the intersections of culture and well-being\, and also address the stigma of mental health in South Asian families. \nCommunity-based and personal resources will be provided to participants so that more members of the South Asian community can benefit. \nEvent Details: \nFREE WITH RSVP \nWHEN: Saturday\, March 2\, 2024 | 3:00 pm start / 2:30 pm doors \nWHERE: 1925 South Michigan Ave\, Chicago\, Il\, 60616

SUMMARY:The Book of Prague: Ten stories by Czech authors in first-ever English release
DESCRIPTION:Petr Hruška\, one of the Czech Republic’s leading contemporary poets\, will introduce Everything Indicates: Selected Poems – an invaluable introduction to his work for English-speaking readers\, gathered in a translation of verve and poignancy by Jonathan Bolton. Hruška’s poems uncover realities we may have sensed but have never before found as precisely and unsettlingly articulated. \nJan Zikmund\, the co-editor of the recently published The Book of Prague\, will discuss the short stories included in the anthology that present Prague in a completely new light. These stories take us into less-visited corners of Prague – from the steep streets of the proudly edgy Žižkov neighborhood to the flood-ravaged suburb of Karlín\, from the tensions experienced by the city’s Romani community to the dehumanizing post-war redevelopment of areas like Libeň\, proving that there are always facets to a city’s character you would never have imagined. Listen to the interview.

SUMMARY:Roots of Reform: A Woman’s Place is…?
DESCRIPTION:Early Chicago female reformers left a legacy that influences public policy and social justice activism to this day. Join us as we explore their place… where they lived\, worked\, and made a difference in Chicago through the safety net they wove. \nIt’s important in Chicago to recognize the contributions of women to social\, economic\, and educational reforms for urban development. Focusing on their work from 1870 – 1920 (BEFORE they had the vote)\, we consider where and how these women laid the foundations of reforms that support Chicago’s vibrant and diverse communities through local\, state\, and national policies that continue to this day. \nABOUT THE PROGRAM PRESENTER\nCAC docent Catherine Thomson is a professional property manager and an avid social justice activist. She is also one-half of HERstory\, a duo of women honoring the achievements of women through musical storytelling programs such as The 19th Amendment and the Power of the Vote\, Trailblazing Female Firsts\, and debuting March 9th\, A Century of Songwriting Sisters. Catherine celebrates HERstory every day\, but during Women’s History Month\, it is a delight to dig deep into the roots of reform and the Chicago women who cultivated them.

SUMMARY:America's Diner Restaurants: A Greek Story with Professor Alexander Kitroeff
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the National Hellenic Museum on April 4\, 2024\, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM for an evening with Professor Alexander Kitroeff (Haverford College)\, one of the foremost historians of the Greek American experience\, where he will be presenting “American Diner Restaurants: A Greek Story.” Few things are as intimately associated with Greek American life as the American diner. From the 1960s through the early 2000s\, Greek Americans dominated the diner restaurant scene in the Northeast and the Midwest\, but how and why did this come to be? Professor Kitroeff narrates this fascinating story\, exploring the cultural and structural factors that lead to this dominance. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about the rich and complex story of America’s Diner Restaurants from a\nleading authority in the field.

SUMMARY:The Trial of Pericles
DESCRIPTION:This is the latest installment of NHM’s Trial Series that takes legal cases and controversies from the pages of history and tries them before an audience to demonstrate the enduring relevance of these ancient disputes. You will witness talented legal minds litigating the fate of Pericles\, known as the great hero of Athenian democracy. \nIn 451 B.C.E.\, Pericles dramatically changed the Athenian Constitution to revoke the citizenship of those without two Athenian parents\, claiming this was necessary to protect Athens from foreign influence. Many viewed his actions as tyrannical because citizens lost their civil liberties\, including the right to vote. \n\n\n\n\n“Now\, it’s up to you\, the audience\, to decide: Was Pericles a hero or a tyrant?”

SUMMARY:Four Thousand Years Blooming in a Cup: A Spring Gathering of Tea Meditation Workshop with Juliann Wang
DESCRIPTION:Each day we begin anew\, a cycle that persists since the dawn time. Each moment we encounter is its own universe. Tea is fabled to have existed in human culture for more than 4\,500 years\, but only as a daily beverage since the third century. Through tea we encounter the new and the old\, the pure and the everyday. \nIn this workshop\, you’ll experience a presentation of Chinese tea ceremony and a guide to various tea types. Along with this we’ll discuss brewing practices\, aesthetics\, and methods to bring harmony for ourselves and in gathering to share moments of subtle joy!! Limited to only 20 spots! \nWorkshop Highlights: \nPhilosophy of Tea: An introduction to tea preparation\, some methods\, and how the act of preparation is just as important as consuming a good cup of tea! \nTea Types: We will look at a few types of tea to familiarize ourselves with how they differ and their uses in daily and specialized practice. \nCreating a Mood: Setting up your space\, whether a complicated affair or a simple moment is important to bringing ourselves into awareness of the subtleties of flavor\, aroma\, and experience. We will discuss some methods to help enhance your personal tea experience\, and create a moment of pause in your daily routine. \nPlease note tours may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \nAccessibility \nThe Heritage Museum of Asian Art’s Entrance is on West 35th Street. Take the elevator to the third floor and turn right to the Museum Reception Desk. Accessible and standard toilets are located on the same floor. SUMMARY:Palestinian Tatreez Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Through needle\, thread and color\, the art of Tatreez tells a story about the maker and history of their family. Tatreez\, or embroidery\, is a rich artistic tradition that has been passed down across generations in Arab culture. It is typically used on garments with patterns and colors varying between birds\, trees\, flowers and geometric symbols. Tatreez patterns can even be as specific to the village\, city or country a family is from. \nJoin us for a demonstration on Palestinian style Tatreez in the Grainger Science Hub and to learn about the importance of this art form. See Kaftans\, Thobes and Abayas that feature traditional patterns and embroidery brought out from our collection up-close during this event. \nThere will be a limited number of Tatreez kits to giveaway* for visitors at this event to practice their skills at home. \n*Tatreez Kit Giveaway will be on a first-come-first-serve basis until kits are no longer available.  \nProgramming takes place on a Wednesday\, which is free for Illinois residents. Visitors must show proof of residency. Learn more.
