SUMMARY:NHM Virtual Book Club: The Beekeeper of Aleppo
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, April 21st at 7pm we will be discussing The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri Virtually via Zoom\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJoin the National Hellenic Museum’s Virtual Book Club! \nFacilitated by NHM’s Resident Scholar Dr. Katherine Kelaidis & Manager of Programs & Events Cairo Dye\, each month the NHM Virtual Book Club chooses a book that is either inspired by the Hellenic legacy or by a Greek American author (and sometimes both!). Then we gather to discuss the book on Zoom. \nBook Club is free to join and meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7pm CST \nIn April we will be discussing The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri. \nSupport NHM with your purchase of The Beekeeper of Aleppo! When you buy your copy through this link \, a portion of the proceeds will go to NHM: https://amzn.to/3IKZlwS \nClick here to see all of our upcoming book selections \nMore about The Beekeeper of Aleppo: \nNuri is a beekeeper; his wife\, Afra\, an artist. They live a simple life\, rich in family and friends\, in the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo–until the unthinkable happens. When all they care for is destroyed by war\, they are forced to escape. But what Afra has seen is so terrible she has gone blind\, and so they must embark on a perilous journey through Turkey and Greece towards an uncertain future in Britain. On the way\, Nuri is sustained by the knowledge that waiting for them is Mustafa\, his cousin and business partner\, who has started an apiary and is teaching fellow refugees in Yorkshire to keep bees. \nAs Nuri and Afra travel through a broken world\, they must confront not only the pain of their own unspeakable loss\, but dangers that would overwhelm the bravest of souls. Above all\, they must journey to find each other again. \nMoving\, powerful\, compassionate\, and beautifully written\, The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a testament to the triumph of the human spirit. It is the kind of book that reminds us of the power of storytelling.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Sichtverrückt.Lost and Found
DESCRIPTION:German artist Beate Axmann’s concept “Sicht.Verrückt” translates roughly to gaze\, shifted. It is a directive to look not once\, not twice\, but thrice\, even four times. In today’s atmosphere of rising extremism and polemics (in Germany and abroad)\, it is critical to shift one’s gaze––to look at issues from multiple angles. Sichtverrückt is the overarching theme that Beate Axmann has used for the whole of her artistic work since 2018.\n \nAxmann is from the Black Forest region of Germany and works in acrylic paint on canvas\, paper\, and wood as well as ink on paper. Her subjects include people (especially women)\, nature\, the Black Forest\, and the continuum of human cultures that she greets on her travels. Collaboration and cooperation with others are centrally important to Axmann. \nAxmann’s show will run through May 20\, and will include public programs such as: \n\nPanel discussion with Joanna Pinsky of Art Encounter\n2 live performances in which Axmann will create collaborative paintings with Joanna Pinsky and Sergio Gomez\nAll-ages art workshops (which Axmann will lead\, speaking German!) in which you will create 1 or 2 experimental collages\n\nContinue to check dankhaus.com/art and our Facebook events for event details.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Making Mexican Chicago
DESCRIPTION:In Making Mexican Chicago\, Mike Amezcua offers a powerful multiracial history of Chicago that sheds new light on the origins and endurance of urban inequality. Amezcua visits the Newberry to discuss how the Windy City became a postwar Latinx metropolis in the face of white resistance. \nThough Chicago is often popularly defined by its Polish\, Black\, and Irish populations\, Cook County is home to the third-largest Mexican American population in the United States. The story of Mexican immigration and integration into the city is one of complex political struggles\, deeply entwined with issues of housing and neighborhood control. \nIn the decades after World War II\, working-class Chicago neighborhoods like Pilsen and Little Village became sites of upheaval and renewal. Mexican Americans attempted to build new communities in the face of white resistance that cast them as perpetual aliens. Mike Amezcua charts the diverse strategies used by Mexican Chicagoans to fight the forces of segregation\, economic predation\, and gentrification\, focusing on how unlikely combinations of social conservatism and real estate market savvy paved new paths for Latinx assimilation. \nFor this event\, Amezcua will speak with James Akerman\, Curator of Maps at the Newberry and the curator of the exhibition Crossings: Mapping American Journeys. \nPurchase Making Mexican Chicago online from the Newberry Bookshop. \nThis event is being held in conjunction with Crossings: Mapping American Journeys . The exhibition runs at the Newberry from February 25 through June 25.\n \n  \nThis program is free and open to all; free tickets required.

Each artist will begin with their own large canvas. During this performance\, there will be several exchanges of the two canvases – meaning that each artist will add to the other artist’s work! This encounter will make visible the meaning of creative intervention\, trust and respect between the artists\, and the differences in their artistic expression.\n\nSpectators will have the unique opportunity to experience a very special art encounter – certainly not one that you see every day.
