SUMMARY:Black Modernism and the Spatial Modernity of the Black Church
DESCRIPTION:Program in collaboration with the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund of the National Trust for Historic Preservation \nJoin us in the sanctuary of The First Church of Deliverance for a salon-style seminar on Black Modernism and the architectural modernity of Black American traditions with leading voices in architectural history\, criticism and preservation. \nThis program is part of a larger series of national conversations curated by the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund of the National Trust for Historic Preservation\, dedicated to reflection and dialogue on the evolving definition of Black Modernism and the undervalued legacy of African American contributions to modernist architecture. Set within one of Chicago’s most iconic examples of Black sacred modernism\, the event brings together leading voices in architectural history\, criticism\, and preservation. \nThe evening will feature presentations by Lee Bey\, photographer\, writer and lecturer whose work documents and interprets the built environment through the lens of race\, politics and power\, and Charles L. Davis II\, African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund Fellow and Associate Professor of Architectural History and Criticism at the University of Texas at Austin\, whose research explores the role of racial identity and race thinking in shaping architectural history and contemporary design culture. Following the presentations\, a moderated conversation will be led by architect and cultural preservationist Brandon Bibby\, Senior Preservation Architect for the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund and Manager of the Conserving Black Modernism initiative. The discussion will open space to collectively consider how Black Modernism continues to inform our understanding of identity\, memory\, and the built environment.

This program is hosted in collaboration with the exhibition Constructing Hope: Ukraine which is currently on view at the CAC through September 1\, 2025. \nThe second exhibition of this work in the United States after premiering at the Center for Architecture in New York in 2024\, Constructing Hope: Ukraine focuses on decentralized reconstruction efforts\, presenting the work of grassroots initiatives happening inside and outside of Ukraine. The speakers\, Kseniia Kalmus (artist and co-founder of Livyi Bereh) and Ada Wordsworth (founder and director of KHARPP)\, will sit with the exhibition curators to discuss their work to provide support for rebuilding and repairs across Ukraine. Come join this special opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of how supporting locally can create a collective good.

DESCRIPTION:Join author Jaroslaw Martynuik at the Ukrainian National Museum\, June 13 at 6:30pm for a presentation and signing of his latest book\, Paris to Pamirs: Eurasian Odysseys. \nParis to Pamirs is a sequel to Monte Rosa: Memoir of an Accidental Spy\, a volume that documented the author’s life from WWII to his years in Paris\, where he worked for the IEA/OECD and later as an undercover researcher for Radio Liberty. The fall of Communism in 1991 opened opportunities for travel east of the defunct Iron Curtain. Over the next three decades\, Jaroslaw Martyniuk traveled to forty countries between the Atlantic Ocean and the high Pamir mountains in Tajikistan\, which border China and Afghanistan in Central Asia. Like a latterday Marco Polo\, Martyniuk takes his reader on an adventure from Western and Eastern Europe\, the Balkans\, Baltics\, Belarus\, Ukraine\, and Russia\, to Istanbul\, the Caucasus\, and Central Asia.

Join us at Kennedy-King College in Englewood for a screening and panel discussion\, in partnership with Go Green on Racine. \nTaking a deeper look at three schools in Austin\, Bronzeville\, and Englewood\, Beyond Closure amplifies community voices leading the repurposing of Emmet\, Woods\, and Overton schools. They reflect on the local impact of these closures\, the struggle to reclaim school buildings for the public good\, and the intertwined inequity\, racism\, and injustice that led to shuttering of 50 neighborhood schools all at once\, mainly in low-income communities of color. \nAfter the film\, a panel discussion will bring together architects and community developers working on “The Regenerator\,” a nexus for housing\, healthcare\, and jobs within the former Woods Academy\, to address challenges overcome in the adaptive reuse. Together\, we will engage in critical reflection and discuss how humanities-based institutions can lead the way in fostering more inclusive and accessible spaces. \nThe conversation will be moderated by Anand Venkatkrishnan\, an intellectual historian of South Asian religion and author of Love in the Time of Scholarship: The Bhāgavata Purāṇa in Indian Intellectual History. \nFeatured speakers include: \nPooja Pittie\, a Chicago-based visual artist living with a progressive form of muscular dystrophy\, whose work explores the tension between a slowing body and an active\, curious mind. \nGrishma Shah\, a self-taught painter and public health professional whose experience with a physical disability inspires her art and advocacy for disability as a valued identity. \nPriya Rama\, an Ohio-based artist who channels chronic migraines into vivid\, expressive work\, encouraging creativity as a response to chronic pain and stress. \nASL interpretation and online participation options will be available. DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss an evening with John Ronan\, FAIA\, founding principal at internationally-recognized John Ronan Architects\, as he reflects on his firm’s design approach and studio culture\, and vital practice in Chicago and beyond. CAC President & CEO Eleanor Gorski joins John in conversation following the lecture. \nMany will know John for his firm’s widely published\, award-winning Chicago projects including the Poetry Foundation\, Gary Comer Youth Center\, Independence Library and Apartments\, Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship at IIT and most recently the new Chicago Park District Headquarters in Brighton Park. \nIn addition to covering these projects and exploring how Chicago has informed his designs\, John will show some work currently “on the boards.” As these projects suggest\, John Ronan Architects works across a wide range of building types and scales. The firm has also competed in a number of international design competitions and was a finalist for the Obama Presidential Center and the UCD Future Campus project in Dublin. DESCRIPTION:Despite James Baldwin’s disavowal of Christianity in his youth\, he continued to engage the symbols and theology of Christianity in works such as The Amen Corner\, Just Above My Head\, and others. With his new book Jimmy’s Faith: James Baldwin\, Disidentification\, and the Queer Possibilities of Black Religion\, author Christopher W. Hunt shows how Baldwin’s usage of those religious symbols both shifted their meaning and served as a way for him to build his own religious and spiritual vision. \nHunt is interviewed by Northwestern professor Ivy Wilson. DESCRIPTION:This lecture\, Introduction of Jade\, provides an insightful overview of the cultural\, historical\, and material significance of jade\, particularly in Chinese civilization. \n\n\nWhat are the differences between jade and gem? \n\n\nThe history of ancient Chinese jade \n\n\nWhy is jade so valuable? \n\n\nThe most valuable kind of jade \n\n\nAbout the Instructor: \n​​Jun Wan graduated from the Department of Geology of Peking University\, majoring in Rock and Mineralogy. During her tenure as Director of the Jewellery Department at Guardian International Auction Co. Ltd\,  she established the first domestic jewelry and jadeite auction in China. Afterward\, she established the first professional jadeite club in mainland China\, held jadeite lectures and courses for many years\, and served as an appraisal expert on CCTV’s “Treasure Appraisal” program. Currently\, for the Art Institute of Chicago (Art Institute of Chicago)\, jade research guest consultant. \nAccessibility:   \nThe Heritage Museum of Asian Art’s Entrance is on West 35th Street. DESCRIPTION:The Alliance Française de Chicago\, in partnership with Partners In Health\, proudly announces the opening of Daughters of Anacaona. This groundbreaking art exhibition in celebration of feminine strength and integrity will be on display in the Alliance’s Eleanor Wood Prince Salon. \nThis compelling exhibition invites audiences to reflect on the legacy of Anacaona\, the legendary Taíno cacica (chief)\, poet\, and composer whose resistance and sacrifice symbolize the strength and dignity of Caribbean women across history. Curated by three dynamic exhibiting women artists from the Haitian diaspora—Chantal Bethel\, Véronique De Mesmaeker\, and Persida Louison—this exhibition is a convergence of ancestral memory\, historical truth\, and contemporary creative expression. Their work spans mixed media\, acrylic\, fiber\, ceramics\, and poetry. A special grand opening will be held at 6:00 p.m. Thursday\, October 9 at AF-Chicago in River North. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the launch of “Chicago Homes: A Portrait of the City’s Everyday Architecture\,” the definitive guide to Chicago’s unique housing styles. \nCo-authors Carla Bruni and Phil Thompson will share entertaining and illuminating stories of why our homes and neighborhoods look the way they do during the celebration of their book launch. This beautifully illustrated book is for Chicagoans and visitors alike\, anyone who’s ever wondered how to spot a Foursquare\, or where to find pre-Fire Italianate homes\, or how two World’s Fairs revolutionized the way Chicagoans live. It chronicles the emergence of vernacular styles from the mid-1800s through the Second World War. Combining their decades of experience in historic preservation and illustration\, Bruni and Thompson have created an evergreen resource for those with an interest in Chicago history and architecture. \nTicket holders are invited to enjoy light bites and refreshments from 5-6 p.m. outside the Lecture Hall. The program begins at 6 p.m. Following the talk\, the authors will sign copies of their book\, available for purchase at the CAC Design Store in person or online.

SUMMARY:Horror Writing and Religion – An American Prophets Program
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a panel discussion about religion\, spirituality\, and horror writing! \nLeading writers of horror and suspense discuss their use of religion in their work\, from magic and voodoo in Tananarive Due’s The Good House\, to historical cults in Matt Ruff’s Lovecraft Country. What frightens us so deeply about religion\, and how do different kinds of writing explore the topic? This discussion will be moderated by author Juan Martinez. \nThis program takes place at the University of Chicago Divinity School\, 1025 E 58th St\, Chicago\, IL 60637. Books will be available for purchase and the authors will sign them following the program. \nThis program is presented in conjunction with the AWM’s forthcoming special exhibit American Prophets: Writers\, Religion\, and Culture\, opening November 2025. American Prophets is supported by a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. through its Religion and Cultural Institutions Initiative. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the authors: \nTANANARIVE DUE is an award-winning author who teaches Black Horror and Afrofuturism at UCLA. A leading voice in Black speculative fiction for more than 20 years\, Due has won an American Book Award\, an NAACP Image Award\, and a British Fantasy Award\, and her writing has been included in best-of-the-year anthologies. Her books include The Reformatory (winner of a Los Angeles Times Book Prize\, Chautauqua Prize\, Bram Stoker Award\, Shirley Jackson Award\, World Fantasy Award\, and a New York Times Notable Book)\, The Wishing Pool and Other Stories\, Ghost Summer: Stories\, My Soul to Keep\, and The Good House. She and her late mother\, civil rights activist Patricia Stephens Due\, co-authored Freedom in the Family: A Mother-Daughter Memoir of the Fight for Civil Rights. \nShe was an executive producer on Shudder’s groundbreaking documentary Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror. She and her husband/collaborator\, Steven Barnes\, wrote “A Small Town” for Season 2 of Jordan Peele’s The Twilight Zone on Paramount Plus\, and two segments of Shudder’s anthology film Horror Noire. They also co-wrote their Black Horror graphic novel The Keeper\, illustrated by Marco Finnegan. Due and Barnes co-host a podcast\, “Lifewriting: Write for Your Life!” She and her husband live with their son\, Jason. \nJUAN MARTINEZ is a writer and an associate professor of English at Northwestern University. He is the author of the horror novel Extended Stay (University of Arizona Press / Camino del Sol\, 2023) and of the story collection Best Worst American (Small Beer Press\, 2017). He is also the fiction editor for Jackleg Press. Juan lives with his family near Chicago.
