DESCRIPTION:After 11 years of producing and presenting high-impact visual advocacy projects in our beloved shared office and gallery space located at 625 N Kingsbury Street\, our team at AWP will be moving out on March 31. \n\nTo mark this occasion\, we welcome back AWP’s founder\, Leslie Thomas\, who will be joining us for a special closing event featuring a conversation with managing director Bora Un on Sunday\, March 23 from 3:00 – 5:00pm. This conversation will be moderated by AWP Board Member and DEI Manager at WBEZ\, Steve Bynum.\n\nDuring our time together\, we will revisit some of AWP’s projects from across our 18 years of creating impact through powerful visual storytelling\, and will share details about some upcoming collaborations with Leslie’s film production studio\, MIRA Studios/MIRA Europe. Guests will also have the opportunity to view a glimpse of Leslie’s latest feature-length documentary film\, The Sharp Edge of Peace\, based on AWP’s 2012 project Women Between Peace and War: Afghanistan.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will serve as the closing event for our open house taking place on Saturday\, March 22 – Sunday\, March 23 from 12:00 – 6pm each day as we invite our Chicago community to come see the space for a final time\, and to help us find new homes for a number of our ready-to-go exhibition kits\, books\, limited edition prints\, and a range of unused exhibition materials and supplies that will be for sale\, or free for the taking!

SUMMARY:All in on Quantum: A Vision for the South Lakefront
DESCRIPTION:A first-of-its-kind Illinois Quantum & Microelectronics Park (IQMP) will soon touch down at the former U.S. Steel South Works site\, a 440-acre barren expanse at the end of the lakefront trail. Learn all about this generational investment on the Far South Side. \nThe largest piece of the new megadevelopment is a leading-edge quantum computing campus for the company PsiQuantum. IBM has also announced it will participate in the IQMP’s National Quantum Algorithm Center next door\, and a much-needed Advocate Health hospital to the north rounds out the site plan. The proposed buildings\, roadways and recreational paths are set back from improved parkland skirting the shoreline. \nOur program brings together project leaders and elected officials for an informative\, thought-provoking discussion. The panelists are: Related Midwest President Curt Bailey; PsiQuantum Executive VP Josh Richman; and Aldermen Peter Chico (10th) and Greg Mitchell (7th). Architect Lesley Roth\, Principal at Lamar Johnson Collaborative\, moderates the discussion. \nThe panel will address several questions\, including: \n\nWhat is quantum computing and why are technologists and economic boosters so bullish on it?\nWhat in particular makes the former U.S. Steel site attractive for quantum computing?\nHow will this project utilize best practices in urban planning?\nWhat is the full catalytic potential for new investment within nearby communities?\n\nThis program is part of our 2025 Public Domain series\, where we explore Chicago design and development with big implications for the public realm.

DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a rare opportunity to hear artist and scholar Joan Laage discuss her butoh learning and exploration alongside members of the Chicago butoh community. This event is a collaboration between the Heritage Museum of Asian Art and Butoh Chicago. \nPlease note tours may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \nThis is generously funded by the Gaylord & Dorothy Donnelley Foundation as part of the Dragon Within: Loong and Global Symbols event series. \nArtist bio:  \nResiding in Seattle WA for many years\, Joan/Kogut is known as the Northwest butoh pioneer. She is one of the few non-Japanese to study with and dance under Yoko Ashikawa in her Tokyo-based group Gnome in the late 80s. She also studied with Kazuo and Yoshito Ohno. Joan has performed and taught at many festivals including the first New York butoh festival\, Vienna’s Hybrid Butoh Festival)\, Paris Butoh Festival (Tenri) and En Chair et En Son Acousmatic Festival in Paris. Joan was invited by Vangeline to present a solo in New York City and was a featured artist at Frankfurt’s Winterwerft Festival. Joan wrote a dissertation on the butoh body and is featured in Tanya Calamoneri’s Butoh America. Since living in Krakow 2004–2006\, she has been known as Kogut (rooster). \nButoh (舞踏\, Butō) is a form of contemporary Japanese dance theatre that encompasses a diverse range of activities\, techniques and motivations for dance\, performance\, or movement.  \nAccessibility \nThe Heritage Museum of Asian Art’s Entrance is on West 35th Street. Take the elevator to the third floor and turn right to the Museum Reception Desk. Accessible and standard toilets are located on the same floor. This event will feature a screening of short animated films by “Malt Adult” and a panel discussion with the author\, moderated by Larry Lee. \nExplore the artistic legacy of Tyrus Wong\, a pioneering Chinese American artist whose work significantly shaped American visual culture—from Disney’s Bambi to Hallmark greeting cards. Through a film screening and panel discussion\, we will examine Wong’s contributions and the broader historical context of Asian animation in American art. \nIn a 40-minute film screening\, Chicago’s independent animation duo Malt Adult will curate a selection of works by animators\, Chinese American artists\, Chinese artists living in Chicago\, and Chicago-based animators to celebrate Wong’s enduring influence. \nLearn more about Background Artist. \n– – – \nKaren Fang is a film scholar and visual culture critic who writes and speaks for museums and film festivals around the world. Known for previous books about Hong Kong cinema and nineteenth-century British interest in exotic objects\, Karen often writes about the intersection of eastern and western aesthetics. Her work has appeared in Smithsonian Magazine\, Hyperallergic\, Nikkei Asia\, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. \n“Malt Adult” is a free\, curated screening and zine series based out of Chicago. Established in 2016\, it features independent and underground animation from artists pushing the boundaries of the medium\, with a mission to bring contemporary animation to the Midwest. \nLarry Lee is a multimedia artist\, art historian\, and educator. He curates the Spotlight Series and teaches at the SAIC\, UIC\, DePaul University\, and Columbia College Chicago.

DESCRIPTION:Originally constructed in 1929\, the Morton Salt Company Warehouse Complex is a familiar and beloved Chicago Landmark along Elston Avenue near Goose Island. For decades\, its enormous hand-painted sign has captivated people traveling along Interstate I-90. As times changed\, the property was no longer used for salt storage and processing. Sandra Steinbrecher’s new photography book\, The Salt Shed\, chronicles the building’s remarkable transformation into a stunning music venue. \nJoin the CAC for an enlightening panel discussion on the Salt Shed’s redevelopment\, history and working-class roots. Joining Sandra are Daniel John Majerowicz\, the plumbing foreman for the project\, and Paul Durica\, Director of Exhibitions at the Chicago History Museum and author of the book’s history essay. The conversation is moderated by Heidi Stevens\, a Chicago writer\, speaker and nationally syndicated columnist\, who wrote the book’s foreword. \nCopies of The Salt Shed will be on sale at the CAC Design Store before and after the program and there will be a short book signing following the panel discussion.

DESCRIPTION:Date: \nStart\nThursday\, October 03\, 2024 \nTime:  \nLocation: \nLocation\nDANK Haus: 2nd Floor\, Brauhaus Room \n\n \nThe Germanen: At the Crossroads of Antiquity \nHistory Course presented by Mike Haas \nBegins October 3\, 2024 \nThursday nights\, 7-9 PM \nWestern European civilization arose from its encounter with the cultures of Rome\, Athens & Jerusalem. It was at these crossroads of antiquity that the ancient Germanen would appear on the world stage as warlike barbarians—to the Romans and Greeks—and soulless pagans—to Jews and Christians. It was at the confluence of these cultures\, however\, that the identity of Western Europe would gradually take shape.  \nIndeed\, as these ancient cultures clashed\, overlapped and intersected\, the center of geo-political power in antiquity shifted from the Hellenic East to Rome. It was from the monotheism of Jerusalem that Christianity was derived\, and once Rome adopted the fledgling faith\, so would the Germanic successor kingdoms in the western half of the former Roman Empire during the 6th\, 7th & 8th centuries. \nIt would be these same ancient Germanen\, however\, who would not only assimilate Roman culture and Christian religiosity but in time leave their own cultural imprint on what became known as the Holy Roman Empire. A powerful Western European geo-political entity during the Early Middle Ages\, it was founded by Karl der Grosse (Charlemagne)\, a West Germanic/Frankish tribal king into whose hands was laid the defense of Western Christendom by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day in Rome in the year 800. For his vision and endeavors in putting Western Europe on a path leading out of the Dark Ages\, Karl would be heralded as the Father of Europe. \nJoin us\, then\, for an exploration of Germanic Antiquity and its Kultur to find out what recorded history tells us of these martially vigorous Germanen\, who carried mighty and swift swords but few of whom could read or write. \nThis course will provide participants an excellent opportunity to broaden their general knowledge and basic understanding of early German history. No textbooks\, no homework\, no papers\, no tests or German language skills required. SUMMARY:Rewilding Chicago’s Waterways
DESCRIPTION:The Wild Mile is one-of-a-kind: a floating eco-park in the heart of the city. Visit this steadily growing wonder on the North Branch of the Chicago River for a conversation\, walking tour\, and optional kayak adventure with co-creators Urban Rivers and Skidmore\, Owings & Merrill (SOM). Backed by the City of Chicago as part of a larger effort to redefine and rehabilitate this channelized section of the river\, a team of experts and community partners devised the Wild Mile as proof-of-concept in how industrial waterways can be reborn as wildlife sanctuaries connecting city dwellers to nature. In 2022\, the first 400 feet of what will ultimately be an intricate mile-long network of floating boardwalks and wetlands debuted along the North Branch Canal behind the Kingsbury Street REI store. This spring an extension is underway that will double the park’s length. Urban Rivers co-founder and Executive Director Nick Wesley and SOM Partner Doug Voigt will share fascinating details of the design\, planning and lengthy negotiations behind this undertaking\, and give tours of the new landscape and habitat. Come discover the thriving ecosystem that has quickly taken hold above and below the water’s surface! This program is part of the Chicago Architecture Center’s Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns exhibition series exploring key themes for the future of cities. \nDue to space limitations\, this event is capped at 40 registrants. Those interested in the kayak tour should reserve an extra hour (until 7pm)\, which is first come first served with a maximum capacity of 8 participants. This option will be available upon checkout.

This talk will highlight Chicago’s early industrial days\, the Civil Rights Movement in the city and new developments for housing\, education and healthcare. \nWilliam Ogden’s impact on Chicago goes far beyond being the city’s first mayor. This talk covers famous landmarks like the old Cook County Hospital\, Stone Temple Baptist Church and 100 years of architectural styles. Explore Douglass Park\, one of Chicago’s oldest parks at 150 years\, and learn how it came to honor Anna and Frederick Douglass in 2020. This talk also discusses the historic North Lawndale community\, from its early Jewish heritage to a predominantly African American community today; and new developments like The Farm on Ogden\, connecting its community with fresh food and good health.

DESCRIPTION:Although our docents go into great depth covering the history of over 50 buildings on the CAC’s renowned River Cruise\, that ninety-minute tour is still not enough time to share all of the interesting facts about the architecture along the Chicago River. Join CAC docents as they share the “extra” stories about the buildings and people that make the Chicago River so special. \nThis illustrated talk features some of our favorite “deleted scenes” from the CAFC River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady. Explore new thinking that may reverse your opinion of the Chicago River reversal. Meet a Chicago woman who embodied our city’s “I Will” motto. Slip under the glass skin to the concrete bones of a structural marvel. Ponder a question asked by every Chicago driver from 1908 to today. If you’ve ever approached a river cruise docent after your tour and asked\, “can you tell me more?” this presentation is for you! \nProgram Presenters: \nJosh Brickman \nJosh has a master’s degree in Structural Engineering and practiced in the City of Chicago for seven years. Now working as a software developer\, he continues to give architectural tours with CAC\, weaving science stories and physics facts into his tales about architecture and history. \nSusan Frost \nSusan has been giving architecture tours in the Chicago area for 25 years\, and has been a CAC docent since 2015. She has a BA in Art History and an abiding love of historic preservation and Chicago history. The question from guests that she can never answer is “what is your favorite building?” \nAlison Schlickman \nAlison has been a docent since 2015. As a fourth generation Chicagoan\, she loves Chicago’s architecture and history. Becoming a docent after a long career with the Federal Reserve has given her the chance to share her enthusiasm for Chicago with guests from far and wide. Being part of the Chicago Architecture Center has been a joy and a privilege for Alison.
