SUMMARY:Building a Relevant Historic Preservation Movement with Bonnie McDonald
DESCRIPTION:Kick off Preservation Month at the CAC with Landmarks Illinois President and CEO Bonnie McDonald! This program will explore the future of architectural preservation with her new book\, “The Relevancy Guidebook\,” unveiled in November 2023.\n\n\n\nAt its 50th anniversary\, Landmarks Illinois embarked on an effort to explore how to move preservation forward over the next 50 years\, culminating in its guiding principles. What the organization found is that preservationists across the nation are deeply questioning the practices and movement’s future. Landmarks Illinois president & CEO Bonnie McDonald was awarded a 2020 James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation Mid-Career Fellowship to help bring the field’s challenges\, and solutions\, to the forefront through the Relevancy Project. Between 2019-2021\, she spoke to 130 individuals\, both within and outside of the preservation field\, to explore these questions and bring forward crowdsourced wisdom illuminating how change is possible. The project evolved into a forward-looking effort to catalogue preservation’s issues\, make the case for its opportunities\, highlight resources and instigate collective action toward change that will build a more relevant and just movement. Join us as McDonald explores her findings catalogued in her book\, “The Relevancy Guidebook: How We Can Transform the Future of Preservation\,” published by Landmarks Illinois in November 2023. Read her January 2023 Next City Op Ed and guidebook Executive Summary for a primer on the Relevancy Project’s outcomes.\n\n\nSpeaker: Bonnie McDonald\, President & CEO of Landmark Illinois\nOver her 11-year tenure as President & CEO\, Bonnie McDonald has led Landmarks Illinois to become a statewide and national voice for relevant change at this inflection point for the preservation movement. Bonnie’s transformative leadership has led Landmarks Illinois to focus on people and their vital connection to place\, and to develop collaborative solutions addressing community concerns like climate change\, affordable housing and lack of access to capital. Her policy work to incent preservation has led to over $6B in investment in existing buildings and over 30K new jobs created. The James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation awarded Bonnie its 2020 Mid-Career Fellowship to inform\, inspire and support preservation’s evolution through The Relevancy Project\, a four-year interview and research initiative culminating in the recently published Relevancy Guidebook. During this time\, she has also maintained her commitment to serving as volunteer and mentor in the preservation community. From 2018-2021\, Bonnie chaired the board of the National Preservation Partners Network\, the national nonprofit representing preservation organizations\, and she currently serves as an appointee to the State of Illinois Route 66 Centennial Commission. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot appointed Bonnie co-chair of the Chicago Monuments Project Advisory Committee in 2020 to help lead a truth and racial reckoning process around the city’s problematic artworks. Bonnie and Landmarks Illinois proudly received the AIA Chicago Distinguished Service Award in December 2022. She holds a Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation Planning from Cornell University.

SUMMARY:Carlos Moreno on the Livable City
DESCRIPTION:A special program featuring Professor Carlos Moreno\, the man who coined the term 15-Minute City to describe an urbanist movement that encourages walkable\, accessible and dynamic neighborhoods. \nDuring the Pandemic\, as a result of working from home\, many people rediscovered their own neighborhoods and all that they offer and don’t offer. Not coincidentally\, this is when the 15-Minute City took the world by storm. The 15-Minute City is rooted in the tried-and-true Urbanism of our oldest cities. It encourages bringing offices\, shops\, restaurants\, entertainment and essential services closer to where people live\, while providing an inviting environment for walking\, biking and strengthening social connections. The concept has also been touted as a way for cities to build back from the pandemic in more resilient ways. \nDuring this program\, learn about the movement’s origins and core principles\, and its rapid adoption by cities like Paris\, Shanghai\, Buenos Aires\, and Houston. Also discover how these ideas are beginning to influence urban policy and community development in Chicago’s neighborhoods and downtown. \nThis program is part of our Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns exhibition series exploring key themes for the future of downtowns. \nProgram Speaker: Carlos Moreno \nUniversity Professor and Researcher\, Carlos Moreno earned international recognition as a scientist with an innovative mind\, pioneer works and unique approach to urban issues. He is also a scientific advisor of national and international figures of the highest level. He works at the heart of issues of international significance as a result of his research\, bringing an innovative perspective on urban issues and offering solutions to the issues faced by the cities in the 21st century. Some of his concepts have traveled the world: the ‘Human Smart City’\, the ’15-Minute City’ and the ’30-Minute Territory’.  In 2022\, he led the launch of the Global Observatory of Sustainable Proximities at the World Urban Forum with UN-Habitat\, C40 Cities\, UCLG and other partners. His latest book\, “The 15-Minute City: A Solution to Saving Our Time and Our Planet\,” is published by Wiley (May\, 2024).

DESCRIPTION:The Pritzker Architecture Prize and the Illinois Institute of Technology’s College of Architecture present “Community: The Architect as Catalyst for Change\,” the 2024 Laureate Lecture and Panel Discussion\, in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Center\, taking place at the university’s historic S.R. Crown Hall \nRiken Yamamoto\, 2024 Laureate of the Pritzker Prize\, will uncover his personal journey in the discovery of communities throughout the world\, inspiring his socially-driven architecture that blurs the boundaries between public and private dimensions. \n“Whether he designs private houses or public infrastructure\, schools or fire stations\, city halls or museums\, the common and convivial dimension is always present. His constant\, careful and substantial attention to community has generated public interworking space systems that incentivize people to convene in different ways\,” states the 2024 Jury Citation\, in part. \nFollowing the lecture\, Yamamoto will be joined by recent Laureates\, David Chipperfield (2023)\, Francis Kéré (2022) and Anne Lacaton (2021)\, who will engage in a personal conversation about their very different paths of life. Sharing a deep commitment to the value of the social system\, they will discuss the responsibility of the architect as a catalyst for change and debate respective challenges of creating and bridging communities as they shape new approaches to the design of the built environment. \nLearn more about Riken Yamamoto and the Pritzker Prize here. \nThe event is free and open to the public but capacity will be limited and registration is required. SUMMARY:On-Site Commemoration: Echoes of Remembrance - The Holocaust in Thessaloniki
DESCRIPTION:From the city’s ancient founding until the Second World War\, Thessaloniki (Salonika)\, Greece was home to a large and thriving Jewish community. In 1943\, from March to August\, approximately 46\,000 Jews were displaced from Thessaloniki by the Nazis and their collaborators and deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau\, where 96% of them were murdered. DESCRIPTION:Although our docents go into great depth covering the history of over 50 buildings on the CAC’s renowned River Cruise\, that ninety-minute tour is still not enough time to share all of the interesting facts about the architecture along the Chicago River. Join CAC docents as they share the “extra” stories about the buildings and people that make the Chicago River so special. \nThis illustrated talk features some of our favorite “deleted scenes” from the CAFC River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady. Explore new thinking that may reverse your opinion of the Chicago River reversal. Meet a Chicago woman who embodied our city’s “I Will” motto. Slip under the glass skin to the concrete bones of a structural marvel. Ponder a question asked by every Chicago driver from 1908 to today. If you’ve ever approached a river cruise docent after your tour and asked\, “can you tell me more?” this presentation is for you! \nProgram Presenters: \nJosh Brickman \nJosh has a master’s degree in Structural Engineering and practiced in the City of Chicago for seven years. Now working as a software developer\, he continues to give architectural tours with CAC\, weaving science stories and physics facts into his tales about architecture and history. \nSusan Frost \nSusan has been giving architecture tours in the Chicago area for 25 years\, and has been a CAC docent since 2015. She has a BA in Art History and an abiding love of historic preservation and Chicago history. The question from guests that she can never answer is “what is your favorite building?” \nAlison Schlickman \nAlison has been a docent since 2015. As a fourth generation Chicagoan\, she loves Chicago’s architecture and history. Becoming a docent after a long career with the Federal Reserve has given her the chance to share her enthusiasm for Chicago with guests from far and wide. Being part of the Chicago Architecture Center has been a joy and a privilege for Alison.
