DESCRIPTION:Travel with author and Jewish historian Irene Shaland to Australia\, from Sydney and Melbourne to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest\, to understand the land\, its people\, and their history. Discover how Aboriginal people played an important role in opening Australia to Jewish refugees escaping from the Nazi occupied Europe and how\, years later\, the descendants of these refugees were at the forefront of the struggle for the human rights of Aboriginal people. \nIn early December 1938\, a delegation of Aboriginal people marched to Melbourne in the Australian state of Victoria. This was not a protest a State or Federal government in defense of their own human rights: it was a brave action demanding Germany to stop the prosecution of the Jews of Europe. \nThe leader of this march\, William Cooper\, was the founder of the Australian Aboriginal League and an unsung hero of the Aboriginal human rights struggle. In his own country\, Cooper and his people had no legal rights and were officially classified as an equivalent of “flora and fauna.” At the time\, Australia maintained the “White Australia Polices” and considered Jews\, though not classified as “colored\,” to be the “others” who should not be issued entrance visas.

DESCRIPTION:June 19\, 2022 marks the 40th anniversary of the attack on and death of Vincent Chin. OCA Detroit is hosting a 4-day program (06/16 – 06/19) in Detroit that will be live-streamed. On the 19th\, there will be two programs: (1) Community Dialogues: Remembrance & Rededication (10:30 AM – 12:30 PM CT); (2) Interfaith Remembrance Ceremony (2:00 PM – 3:30 PM CT).\n\n\n\n\n\nIn collaboration with the Greater Chicago chapter of OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates\, Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community\, and Chinese American Citizens Alliance\, the Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) will have an in-person program on June 19th from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM CT that includes a brief presentation about the incident\, screening of two short films “Justice for Vincent” and “Vincent Who?” and a Q&A session. We invite you to this in-person conversation and Q&A to celebrate Sayet’s work and the production of her solo play\, Where We Belong\, now showing at the Goodman Theatre as part of a national tour presented by the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in association with the Folger Shakespeare Library.   \nWhere We Belong\, at the Goodman Theatre through July 24\, 2022\, is a personal story of an Indigenous theatre-maker’s journey across geographic borders\, personal history\, and cultural legacies; in search of a place to belong. Sayet’s autobiographical account in Where We Belong shares her experience pursuing a Ph.D. in Shakespeare in England. There she finds a country that refuses to acknowledge its role in colonialism while echoing a journey to England braved by Native ancestors in the 1700s following treatise betrayals\, forcing us to consider what it means to belong in an increasingly globalized world.  \nThis intimate conversation with Sayet is free for Mitchell Museum Members and $10 for non-members. SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Vibrancy on the Brink
DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Germany\, Anke Fachmann was influenced by remarkable artist movements such as The Bridge (Die Brücke) and The Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter). A passion for art\, culture\, and design led her to initially study graphic design. She received a Bachelors in Graphic Design at the Freie Hochschule für Grafik-Design & Bildende Kunst in Freiburg\, Southern Germany. She then came to the US to pursue a graphic design career. Soon\, Fachmann’s focus changed and she rediscovered her passion for fine art. \nColor and structure are her tools to tell stories\, ​to leave room for the imagination. She paints with her fingers as well as with recycled materials such as paper and coffee sleeves to give her artwork an unique expression. \nAnke Fachmann on her technique and subject matter: \n“One day I worked on a big canvas using brushes. This felt tiring\, so I started to dip my hands and fingers into the paint. Over time\, I explored painting with recycled materials such as straws\, sponges\, and the paper sleeves from to-go coffee cups. Friends started saving the coffee sleeves for me and I think that is not a bad idea when it comes to recycling and our beloved planet!” \n“After experimenting with mixed media and abstract work\, I started to paint animals\, learning more and more about endangered species through this media. I decided to focus on them\, with the hope to prompt curiosity and to showcase their beauty and uniqueness.” \nFachmann uses her art to create awareness and to work together with environmental organizations and activists whenever she can. She lives in San Francisco. \nThis exhibition opens with a reception on Friday\, July 15\, from 6:00 to 9:00pm. The exhibition runs through Friday\, August 19. SUMMARY:Online Program - Breaking the Silence: Native American Boarding Schools
DESCRIPTION:Between 1869 and the 1960s\, hundreds of thousands of Native American children were forcibly abducted from their homes and families and placed in more than 350 government-funded\, and often church-run\, Indian Boarding schools. These children were subjected to horrendous conditions\, suffering physical\, sexual\, cultural\, and spiritual abuse and torture. \nThey were banned from speaking their Native languages\, from traditional and cultural practices\, and stripped of traditional clothing\, hair\, and personal belongings. The express intent was to implement cultural genocide through removal and “reprogramming” Native children to carry out systematic destruction of Native cultures and communities. Many of these children never returned home\, and their fates have yet to be accounted for by the U.S. government. \nJoin us for a poignant conversation with Dr. Samuel Torres\, Deputy Chief Executive Officer for the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition (NABS)\, as he highlights and addresses the history and ongoing trauma created by the U.S. Indian Boarding School Policy. \nTorres is expected to be accompanied by a boarding school survivor. There will be opportunities for questions after the discussion. \nReservations required.

They also rallied\, exclaiming solidarity with the Ukrainian resistance from 5\,000 miles away. \nWBEZ reporter Anna Savchenko\, who is Ukrainian\, bore witness to the rallies as both a compatriot and a Chicago journalist. She’s shed light on local stories of heartache and sources of hope.
