You will witness talented legal minds litigating the fate of Pericles\, known as the great hero of Athenian democracy. \nIn 451 B.C.E.\, Pericles dramatically changed the Athenian Constitution to revoke the citizenship of those without two Athenian parents\, claiming this was necessary to protect Athens from foreign influence. Many viewed his actions as tyrannical because citizens lost their civil liberties\, including the right to vote. \n\n\n\n\n“Now\, it’s up to you\, the audience\, to decide: Was Pericles a hero or a tyrant?”

DESCRIPTION:Petr Hruška\, one of the Czech Republic’s leading contemporary poets\, will introduce Everything Indicates: Selected Poems – an invaluable introduction to his work for English-speaking readers\, gathered in a translation of verve and poignancy by Jonathan Bolton. Hruška’s poems uncover realities we may have sensed but have never before found as precisely and unsettlingly articulated. \nJan Zikmund\, the co-editor of the recently published The Book of Prague\, will discuss the short stories included in the anthology that present Prague in a completely new light. These stories take us into less-visited corners of Prague – from the steep streets of the proudly edgy Žižkov neighborhood to the flood-ravaged suburb of Karlín\, from the tensions experienced by the city’s Romani community to the dehumanizing post-war redevelopment of areas like Libeň\, proving that there are always facets to a city’s character you would never have imagined. DESCRIPTION:In South Asian communities\, mental health issues are often swept under the rug. Lee from UC Santa Barbara as we delve into his groundbreaking biography\, “The First Black Archaeologist: A Life of John Wesley Gilbert” (Oxford University Press 2022). \nJohn Wesley Gilbert\, born enslaved in Hephzibah\, Georgia\, during the American Civil War\, went on to become one of the first ten Black students admitted to Brown University in Classics. His educational journey continued with a scholarship to study at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens\, Greece\, where he became the first African-American to attend. Gilbert’s contributions include his 1891 Master’s thesis\, “The Demes of Attica\,” and his pioneering role as the first Black faculty member at Paine College\, where he taught Greek and Latin.\nIn this special discussion\, Professor Lee offers unique insights into the life of this extraordinary scholar and Philhellene. Don’t miss this important exploration. \nAbout John W.I. Lee:\nJohn W.I. Lee is a Professor of History at UC Santa Barbara. With a background shaped by Asia and Hawai’i\, he holds a PhD in History from Cornell University. During her tenure as Director of the Jewellery Department at Guardian International Auction Co. Ltd\,  she established the first domestic jewelry and jadeite auction in China. Afterward\, she established the first professional jadeite club in mainland China\, held jadeite lectures and courses for many years\, and served as an appraisal expert on CCTV’s “Treasure Appraisal” program. SUMMARY:A Talk By Richard Tellstrom ONLINE Swedish Food History and Signature Dishes\, Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:A broad exposé of what characterizes Swedish food culture in flavors\, dishes and eating\, both before the great American migration whit the spice roads to Sweden throughout history\, and how food culture have developed during the 1900s\, starting with a great interest in simplyfing cooking\, removing the dessert from the everyday meal and later on picking up food trends from many countries. There will also be some highlights of what remains of regional differences from the food history\, and how modern food has been adopted differently in Sweden and created new regional dishes.  After the lectur there will be time for comments and questions.

This artist talk will be moderated by Alexandra Senycia.  \nMelissa Jay Craig\, Lisa A. Frank\, and Anne Hughes lead lives rich in creative experiences informed by nature. Day by day\, art practice and the natural world awaken shoots of imaginative reflections and actions. This exhibition brings together varied\, visual art forms to stand on their own and resonate off the others through surprising interconnections (just like nature itself). A purposeful confluence provides many pathways into appreciation of process and range. It allows for thoughtful exploration of the infinite ways in which nature affects our lives and we affect nature. Presented here are works by three artists who\, over decades\, have embraced the wonders of nature and witnessed results of human actions and inactions. Deepfelt desires\, to share their personal artworks and stir the passions of others to engage\, reside at the heart of this exhibition. There is no one-way in. Creativity and nature inspire\, confound\, amaze\, and amuse.

DESCRIPTION:The Newberry Library and the Center for Textual Studies and Digital Humanities (CTSDH) at Loyola University invite you to a birthday party for Frederick Douglass on February 14\, 11am-2pm. Alongside volunteers around the world\, we will participate in a transcribe-a-thon to improve access to the correspondence of Frederick Douglass. We’ll also be streaming music and presentations from the Douglass Day organizers\, and exhibiting Black history items from the Newberry’s collections. \nSimultaneously with volunteers around the world\, we’ll participate in a transcribe-a-thon\, using By the People\, a crowdsourcing website from the Library of Congress\, to improve access to the correspondence of Frederick Douglass. We’ll also be streaming music and presentations from the Douglass Day organizers\, and exhibiting Black history items from the Newberry’s collections. \nNo transcribing experience is necessary! Everyone is welcome. You can choose to drop in for a bit or stay for the whole session.\nCOST AND REGISTRATION \nThis event is free and open to all. No advance registration required.
