DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special panel discussion exploring the wide world of mass timber design and construction\, coinciding with the opening of our new exhibition\, ReFramed: The Future of Cities in Wood. \nThis program is FREE with advanced registration. Both In-Person & Virtual options are available. Following the panel discussion\, attendees will be able to view the new exhibit. \nMass timber brings many advantages to architecture and construction by virtue of its prefabricated versatility\, relative light weight\, low embodied carbon\, and natural beauty. All of them have been officially designated as historically significant by the City of Chicago or the National Park Service for their design\, artistry and connection to noteworthy people or events. Join us for a close-up look at these neighborhood buildings—reminders of the past that are still functional and still beautiful today. \n$15 Registration\, Free for CAC Members \nPRESENTER: BILL COFFIN\n \nA former appellate attorney and adjunct professor of legal research and writing\, Bill Coffin became a CAC docent in 2004. He is the tour director for the CAC’s two Art Deco walking tours and has presented lectures about Art Deco at the CAC and at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute\, a program of Northwestern University’s School of Professional Studies.

Please register below. \nIn-Person Registration \nLivestream Registration \nHow do novelists and historians write about war\, empire\, and power? How do they translate deep research into compelling narrative? How do they think about evidence—and the absence of evidence—as they write? Are there lines between educating readers and providing them with gripping stories? \nThis installment of “Conversations at the Newberry” brings together two writers\, Nicholson Baker and Daniel Immerwahr\, who explore themes of American empire. Though they approach their work through different lenses and write in different styles\, both Baker and Immerwahr dig into the complex histories of US foreign relations. In this conversation\, they’ll think together about how literature and historical writing have shaped understandings of American power.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Ballpark
DESCRIPTION:What can Chicago’s ballparks tell us about the evolution of our city? Pulitzer Prize winning architecture critic Paul Goldberger will discuss the connection between American cities and America’s favorite pastime. \nThis program is $15 to attend and $7 for CAC Members. \nIn a discussion of his 2019 book Ballpark: Baseball in the American City\, Goldberger offers some valuable context about how baseball and ballparks have shaped our cities\, both physically and psychologically. He tracks the evolution of baseball’s tastes in stadium location and design and why they matter. He explores how the architecture of ballparks\, reflects how we view our cities and the game and how the two relate to each other. \nA book signing will take place at the conclusion of the program. Books will be available at the CAC design store. \nAUTHOR: PAUL GOLDBERGER\n \nPaul Goldberger\, a contributing editor at Vanity Fair\, began his career at The New York Times\, where he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism for his writing on architecture. Later\, and for 15 years\, he was architecture critic for The New Yorker. He is the author of many books\, most recently Ballpark: Baseball in the American City (May\, 2019). Goldberger teaches at the New School and lectures widely around the country on architecture\, design\, historic preservation\, and cities.
