Museum-trained interns and volunteers will give a talk on selected artworks. Each word is packed with fascinating insights\, information\, and stories. During this participatory experience\, you’ll connect with works from across the collection and get a close look at highlighting artworks. Visitors of all ages are welcome. \nPlease note tours may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \nAbout the project –  \nIF THE SKY COULD DREAM focuses on the Chinese dragon as a powerful being that fosters harmony. This creature is emblematic of China as well as a mythological being for many Asian and Western cultures and thus evokes a sense of mysticism\, and intrigue in many communities. SUMMARY:Art Deco Outside of the Loop
DESCRIPTION:A continuation of last year’s popular program that looked at Chicago Art Deco buildings outside of downtown. \nThis program explores the city’s far north and northwest sides and provides an in-depth look at a variety of Art Deco structures\, including both residential and commercial buildings\, as well as a college\, a bridge\, and a mausoleum. Some are well-preserved city landmarks; some sport bold polychromatic terra cotta facades\, the likes of which are not seen downtown. But all of them have striking geometric ornamentation that reflected the optimism and prosperity of the Roaring 20s and that is still eye-catching today. \nProgram Presenter: Bill Coffin \nBill Coffin is a former appellate attorney and adjunct professor of legal research and writing\, Bill Coffin became a CAC docent in 2004. He is the tour director for the CAC‘s two Art Deco walking tours and has presented lectures about Art Deco at the CAC and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute\, a program of Northwestern University’s School of Professional Studies. He enjoys sharing photos of Art Deco buildings with friends from his travels to cities big and small all across the country.

SUMMARY:Rewilding Chicago’s Waterways
DESCRIPTION:The Wild Mile is one-of-a-kind: a floating eco-park in the heart of the city. Visit this steadily growing wonder on the North Branch of the Chicago River for a conversation\, walking tour\, and optional kayak adventure with co-creators Urban Rivers and Skidmore\, Owings & Merrill (SOM). Backed by the City of Chicago as part of a larger effort to redefine and rehabilitate this channelized section of the river\, a team of experts and community partners devised the Wild Mile as proof-of-concept in how industrial waterways can be reborn as wildlife sanctuaries connecting city dwellers to nature. In 2022\, the first 400 feet of what will ultimately be an intricate mile-long network of floating boardwalks and wetlands debuted along the North Branch Canal behind the Kingsbury Street REI store. This spring an extension is underway that will double the park’s length. Urban Rivers co-founder and Executive Director Nick Wesley and SOM Partner Doug Voigt will share fascinating details of the design\, planning and lengthy negotiations behind this undertaking\, and give tours of the new landscape and habitat. Come discover the thriving ecosystem that has quickly taken hold above and below the water’s surface! This program is part of the Chicago Architecture Center’s Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns exhibition series exploring key themes for the future of cities. \nDue to space limitations\, this event is capped at 40 registrants. Those interested in the kayak tour should reserve an extra hour (until 7pm)\, which is first come first served with a maximum capacity of 8 participants. This option will be available upon checkout.

DESCRIPTION:Free Admission Museum Nights take place every third Friday of each month from 5 pm to 8 pm! The tour will start at 6 PM on time. The event offers wine and appetizers. \nThis Friday at 7-7:40 PM\, our Resident Artist 2024 – Irene Hsiao will perform at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art as part of the project If The Sky Could Dream.  \nAbout the Tour –  \nLearn about Asian Art in the Heritage Museum of Asian Art with a guided hour-long tour around the gallery. Museum-trained interns and volunteers will give a talk on selected artworks. Each word is packed with fascinating insights\, information\, and stories. During this participatory experience\, you’ll connect with works from across the collection and get a close look at highlighting artworks. SUMMARY:ART WORKS Projects Gallery Closing Event: 18 Years of Visual Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:After 11 years of producing and presenting high-impact visual advocacy projects in our beloved shared office and gallery space located at 625 N Kingsbury Street\, our team at AWP will be moving out on March 31. \n\nTo mark this occasion\, we welcome back AWP’s founder\, Leslie Thomas\, who will be joining us for a special closing event featuring a conversation with managing director Bora Un on Sunday\, March 23 from 3:00 – 5:00pm. This conversation will be moderated by AWP Board Member and DEI Manager at WBEZ\, Steve Bynum.\n\nDuring our time together\, we will revisit some of AWP’s projects from across our 18 years of creating impact through powerful visual storytelling\, and will share details about some upcoming collaborations with Leslie’s film production studio\, MIRA Studios/MIRA Europe. Guests will also have the opportunity to view a glimpse of Leslie’s latest feature-length documentary film\, The Sharp Edge of Peace\, based on AWP’s 2012 project Women Between Peace and War: Afghanistan.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will serve as the closing event for our open house taking place on Saturday\, March 22 – Sunday\, March 23 from 12:00 – 6pm each day as we invite our Chicago community to come see the space for a final time\, and to help us find new homes for a number of our ready-to-go exhibition kits\, books\, limited edition prints\, and a range of unused exhibition materials and supplies that will be for sale\, or free for the taking!

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Kennedy-King College for a screening of Beyond Closure (2024) and a panel discussion on community responses to Chicago’s 2013 school closures. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe documentary Beyond Closure (2024) by On The Real Film and Borderless Studio recalls the history of Chicago’s 2013 school closures—the largest mass closure in U.S. history—and shares inspirational stories of community reclamation. Join us at Kennedy-King College in Englewood for a screening and panel discussion\, in partnership with Go Green on Racine. \nTaking a deeper look at three schools in Austin\, Bronzeville\, and Englewood\, Beyond Closure amplifies community voices leading the repurposing of Emmet\, Woods\, and Overton schools. They reflect on the local impact of these closures\, the struggle to reclaim school buildings for the public good\, and the intertwined inequity\, racism\, and injustice that led to shuttering of 50 neighborhood schools all at once\, mainly in low-income communities of color. \nAfter the film\, a panel discussion will bring together architects and community developers working on “The Regenerator\,” a nexus for housing\, healthcare\, and jobs within the former Woods Academy\, to address challenges overcome in the adaptive reuse. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a very special adult LEGO workshop that includes a tour of The Wild Mile along the Chicago River and then partake in a hands-on LEGO & Libations workshop. \nBring a friend\, grab a drink and enjoy a hands-on workshop where you’ll think like a designer and bring your special nature-focused LEGO creation to life. All LEGO materials will be provided. One workshop registration includes one (1) draft beer ticket and one (1) pass for a future visit to the CAC. \nHosted by the CAC\, Urban Rivers and Off Color Brewing\, this unique workshop combines nature\, libations and LEGO in a fun and engaging way. \nThe Wild Mile is the flagship project of nonprofit Urban Rivers. It is a floating ecopark that takes a wildlife-first approach to public greenspace.
