DESCRIPTION:Puerto Rican Archives: Preserving Community Memory is a two-day symposium focused on the political potency of Puerto Rican archives—both on the island and in the diaspora. \nThe symposium is a collaboration between Digitizing the Barrio (an archival project of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center)\, The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. It extends the focus on collective histories highlighted through photographs and ephemera documenting social movements and community organizations in the MCA exhibition entre horizontes: Art and Activism Between Chicago and Puerto Rico. \nThe symposium will foreground archives that house histories of Puerto Rican protest including speakers from presenting Chicago institutions\, PRCC and NMPRAC; representatives from Puerto Rico-based organizations Archivo General de Puerto Rico\, Archivo Histórico de Vieques\, Archivo Comunitario LGBTQ+ de Puerto Rico\, and Memoria Decolonial; and CENTRO in New York. \nThrough panels\, a keynote\, and workshops\, the symposium aims to generate dialogue\, connection\, and community engaged learning around key Puerto Rico and diasporic events. \nThe symposium will take place on April 5 and 6\, 2024\, at the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture\, 3015 W Division St\, Chicago\, IL 60622. \n*You must register for each day.

Immerse yourself in the gentle art of Tai Chi and discover the transformative power it holds for your body and mind. \nHeritage Museum of Asian Art welcomes everyone to join our Tai Chi classes\, beginning April 14 from  2:00 P.M.-3:00 P.M. This is a reccuring event. There are 6 sessions total\, occuring on Sundays: \nSession 1 [04/14]: Softening Exercises Warm-up Warm up 松柔功熱身 \nSession 2 [04/21]: Yang Style Tai Chi Initial Section 杨式大架初段 \nSession 3 [04/28]: Breath-Relieving Meridian Tapping 纾缓经络拍打功 \nSession 4 [05/05]: Tai Chi Footwork 步法 \nSession 5 [05/12]: Tai Chi Pushing Hands 推手 \nSession 6 [05/19]: Tai Chi Standing Meditation 站椿 \nPlease note classes may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \nTai Chi is a graceful and meditative practice that combines gentle movements\, deep breathing\, and focused intention to promote relaxation\, balance\, and inner harmony. In this class\, you will learn the fundamental principles and techniques of Tai Chi\, allowing you to experience its numerous physical and mental benefits. Whether one is a beginner or has some experience with Tai Chi\, this class offers something for everyone. \nDuring the classes\, our Tai Chi Master Peter Wong will guide you through a series of flowing movements and postures\, known as forms\, designed to enhance flexibility\, improve posture\, and cultivate a calm and centered state of mind. You will also explore the concept of “qi”（气）\, the vital life energy\, and learn how to harness and cultivate it through Tai Chi practice. Through the combination of demonstrations\, hands-on practice\, and group exercises\, you will gain a deeper understanding of the principles of Tai Chi and its application in daily life. You will also learn relaxation techniques\, breathing exercises\, and meditation practices that complement the physical aspects of Tai Chi. \n  \nBenefits of attending this workshop: \n• Improve physical balance\, coordination\, and flexibility. \n• Enhance mental clarity and focus. \n• Reduce stress and promote relaxation. \n• Cultivate a sense of inner peace and well-being. \n• Boost energy levels and vitality \n• Develop a greater connection between mind\, body\, and spirit. \nThis class is open to all levels. Prior experience is not required to participate in this class. Tai Chi is suitable for individuals of all ages and fitness levels. He has been practicing Traditional Kungfu for over fifty years and has been an instructor of Tai Chi at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Peter Wong was a director of the 26th and 27th Board of Directors of the Chin Woo Athletic Association Hong Kong Limited. DESCRIPTION:Heritage Museum of Asian Art is collaborating with 2024 Resident Artist Irene Hsiao to create a new interactive installation\, performance\, and workshop series called If the Sky Could Dream. Coinciding with the Lunar Year of the Dragon\, the museum will showcase dragon artworks from throughout Asia\, as well as include an original\, contemporary vision of the dragon from an Asian American perspective by Hsiao.\n​\nIf the Sky Could Dream combines drawing\, painting\, dance\, found materials and found spaces at the museum to reveal and celebrate the dragons among us—structural\, ancestral\, architectural\, internal\, and environmental. DESCRIPTION:Through needle\, thread and color\, the art of Tatreez tells a story about the maker and history of their family. Tatreez\, or embroidery\, is a rich artistic tradition that has been passed down across generations in Arab culture. It is typically used on garments with patterns and colors varying between birds\, trees\, flowers and geometric symbols. Tatreez patterns can even be as specific to the village\, city or country a family is from. \nJoin us for a demonstration on Palestinian style Tatreez in the Grainger Science Hub and to learn about the importance of this art form. See Kaftans\, Thobes and Abayas that feature traditional patterns and embroidery brought out from our collection up-close during this event. \nThere will be a limited number of Tatreez kits to giveaway* for visitors at this event to practice their skills at home. \n*Tatreez Kit Giveaway will be on a first-come-first-serve basis until kits are no longer available.  \nProgramming takes place on a Wednesday\, which is free for Illinois residents.
