SUMMARY:Calligraphy Workshop with Yuzhe Cao
DESCRIPTION:Chinese calligraphy is a traditional and ancient art form with a history that stretches back more than 3\,000 years. As a unique blend of writing\, painting\, and poetry\, it has been used throughout Chinese history and culture for a variety of purposes\, such as communication\, art\, and self-expression. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn about the history and ancient techniques of Chinese calligraphy\, and have the opportunity to create your own work of art. Our professional calligraphy instructor will introduce you to the different styles of calligraphy\, guiding you through the basics of brush and ink techniques. You will discover the symbolism and meaning behind Chinese characters\, and how calligraphy has been used throughout history. By the end of the workshop\, you will take home a unique piece of calligraphy\, now having a deeper understanding and appreciation for this timeless art form. \n  \nAbout the Instructor: \nYuzhe Cao is a graduate student in the University of Chicago’s Master of Arts Program in the Humanities\, studying pre-modern Chinese art history. He obtained his BA in Modern Chinese History at the Ohio State University. He has studied calligraphy for over 10 years. \n  \nCalligraphy History \nThe earliest examples of Chinese calligraphy date back to the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BCE)\, when characters were written on oracle bones for divination purposes. During the Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 BCE)\, calligraphy began to be used for other purposes as well\, including literature and art. Calligraphers during this time developed a variety of styles\, including the seal script and the clerical script. \nIn the Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE)\, calligraphy became more standardized\, with the development of the regular script. This style of calligraphy was used for official documents and inscriptions\, and it was characterized by its even and balanced strokes. \nDuring the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE)\, calligraphy reached its peak as an art form\, with the development of the cursive script and the running script. These styles were more fluid and expressive than the regular script\, and they allowed calligraphers to express their personalities and emotions more freely. In the Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE)\, calligraphy continued to evolve\, with the development of the semi-cursive script and the elegant and refined style known as the “scholarly style.” Calligraphers during this time focused on precision and subtlety\, and they often used calligraphy as a way to express their philosophical and literary ideas. \nDuring the Ming (1368-1644 CE) and Qing (1644-1912 CE) Dynasties\, calligraphy continued to be an important art form\, with many famous calligraphers creating works that are still admired today. In modern times\, calligraphy has continued to be an important part of Chinese culture\, with many people practicing it as a hobby or profession. Today\, Chinese calligraphy remains an important cultural tradition in China and is admired around the world for its beauty and complexity. \nPlease note that events may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \n“AAPI Heritage Month Cultural Festival 2024” is sponsored by Chicago Community Trust. \n  \nAccessibility \nThe Heritage Museum of Asian Art’s Entrance is on West 35th Street.  Take the elevator to the third floor and turn right to the Museum  Reception Desk. Accessible and standard toilets are located on the same floor. Free parking space is available next to the museum\, accessed via West 35th Street. \nEmail at info@heritageasianart.org \nPhone at 312-842-8884

SUMMARY:If the Sky Could Dream: Interactive Installation\, Performance\, & Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Museum of Asian Art is collaborating with 2024 Resident Artist Irene Hsiao to create a new interactive installation\, performance\, and workshop series called If the Sky Could Dream. Coinciding with the Lunar Year of the Dragon\, the museum will showcase dragon artworks from throughout Asia\, as well as include an original\, contemporary vision of the dragon from an Asian American perspective by Hsiao.\n\nIf the Sky Could Dream combines drawing\, painting\, dance\, found materials and found spaces at the museum to reveal and celebrate the dragons among us—structural\, ancestral\, architectural\, internal\, and environmental. Because the dragon is a water deity in Chinese culture\, this work also features projections of the waters of Chicago: Lake Michigan\, the Chicago River\, and the lakes\, ponds\, and lagoons of Chicago Parks. \nDates:\nFriday\, Feb 9\, 6:00 – 8:30 PM: Preview of the Dragon Exhibition\nSaturday\, Feb 10\, 11:00AM-12:00PM: Dragon Exhibition Opening Ceremony\nFriday\, Feb 16\, 6:00 – 8:00 PM: 3rd Friday with Irene Hsiao\nFriday\, Mar 15\, 6:00 – 8:00 PM: 3rd Friday with Irene Hsiao\nSaturday\, Mar 16\, 1:00 – 3:00PM: If the Sky Could Dream Workshop – Series One\nFriday\, Apr 19\, 6:00 – 8:00 PM: 3rd Friday with Irene Hsiao\nSaturday\, May 11\, 1:00 – 3:00PM: If the Sky Could Dream Workshop – Series Two\n\nIf the Sky Could Dream is supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant. \nJoin the HMAA’s Artist in Residence Irene Hsiao for a performance with guest musician Menghua Guan\, following with an insightful artist conversation about the process behind her project\, IF THE SKY COULD  DREAM. Attendees will explore the details of Hsiao’s project through the lens of the artist herself\, learning about installation and performance art and how it relates to the HMAA’s current exhibition Year of the Dragon: Early China to LEGO. \nIF THE SKY COULD DREAM focuses on the Chinese dragon as a powerful being that fosters harmony. This creature is emblematic of China as well as a mythological being for many Asian and Western cultures and thus evokes a sense of mysticism\, and intrigue in many communities. Representing the Chinese Dragon as a water deity\, the  installation series will feature images and projections of the weather and local bodies of water in Chicago. \nPlease note that events may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \n“AAPI Heritage Month Cultural Festival 2024” is sponsored by Chicago Community Trust. \nIf The Sky Could Dream is supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant. \nAbout Irene Hsiao \nIrene Hsiao creates performances in conversation with visual art in museums\, galleries\, and public spaces\, a practice that includes site-specific interaction with visual artworks and experimental engagement with artists\, institutions\, and the public. Lucy will discuss the history and traditions of paper cutting\, typical paper-cut patterns\, and engage in a workshop where guests can learn and create their own paper-cutting masterpieces.  All materials will be provided. This workshop is open to all skill levels. \nAbout the Instructor \nPaper-cutting artist Lucy P. Liu has spent years infusing her paper-cutting art into beautiful public art\, wall art\, illustrations\, home decor\, and more with 3D and 2D formats. She has been an ‘Artist in Residence’ at the Chinese American Museum of Chicago and here at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art. Her vivid demonstration and artwork was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2020. Lucy has instructed Chinese paper-cutting art courses at Benedictine University\, Lifelong Learning Center\, Forest Lake College\, the Chicago Public Library\, the Lab Schools of University of Chicago\, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy and many more. \nAbout Paper-cutting \nChinese paper-cutting is a cherished traditional art that dates back to the development of paper\, around the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-220 A.D.). Initially\, it gained popularity for decorating doors and windows as paper became more widely available. Intricate designs\, featuring symbols and animals\, are crafted using scissors or art knives. With the increasing affordability of paper\, paper-cutting evolved into one of the most significant forms of Chinese art. In typical Chinese paper-cutting\, each individual art piece is cut from a single sheet of paper. \nOriginal paper-cutting artwork has been known to considerably appreciate in value over time. Since 2009\, the Chinese Paper-cutting technique has been considered a World Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. From ancient times to today\, Chinese paper-cutting art has been a popular decoration for festivals and events\, like Chinese New Year\, weddings\, childbirth\, and birthdays. They are also known as chuanghua (窗花)\, meaning ‘window flowers’ because it first gained popularity for decorating doors and windows. \nPaper-cuts typically symbolize good luck\, blessings\, and happiness. Traditionally\, five colors are used: cyan\, red\, yellow\, white\, and black\, which reference the ancient Chinese philosophy of the universe among the five elements: wood (cyan)\, fire (red)\, earth (yellow)\, metal (white)\, and water (black). Red is the most commonly used color\, representing luck and prosperity. \nPlease note that events may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \n“AAPI Heritage Month Cultural Festival 2024” is sponsored by Chicago Community Trust. \nPhoto by Jasmine Carter \nAccessibility \nThe Heritage Museum of Asian Art’s Entrance is on West 35th Street.  Take the elevator to the third floor and turn right to the Museum Reception Desk.
