The resulting images and documents not only provide tangibility to an abstract space but offer those within it visibility and voice.  \nBoth veteran photojournalists\, Castillo and Sands spent months documenting and collaborating with migrants in Mexico and at the US border. BorderCruzadas is the result of shared efforts to present a visual\, evidentiary case for urgent\, effective\, and coordinated public policy and humanitarian aid for the globally displaced.

DESCRIPTION:This intimate event brings co-curators for ReFramed and ReCovered into conversation around the many benefits that trees impart to cities. Learn about the vision and themes of these complementary exhibits and join the curators for a gallery tour. \nThis program is $15 for admission and $7 for CAC Members. \nIn “ReCovered: Chicago’s Urban Tree Canopy” we consider the many benefits of lining our streets with trees. This immersive exhibit connects people to an element of nature we are inherently drawn to but often ignore as integral to the livability of cities and resilience of neighborhoods. Through the exhibit’s interactivity\, we can sense how trees serve to soften the hard edges of our built surroundings. \nThe companion exhibit\, “ReFramed: The Future of Cities in Wood\,” transitions from horizontal\, protective cover to a soaring vertical space\, introducing visitors to a very different function for trees in the city: buildings constructed from mass timber\, a new structural material which holds great promise for sustainable development and breathtaking design. \nHear from Ryan Gann and Ian Spula\, co-curators on ReCovered and ReFramed\, respectively. The conversation will be moderated by CAC’s Director of Exhibitions\, Eve Fineman. \nAt the conclusion of the program\, attendees are invited to tour both exhibitions with the curators.

DESCRIPTION:After 25 years of service in Iraq and Afghanistan\, U.S. Marine Richard “Mac” McKinney returned home to Muncie\, Indiana\, with an all-consuming hatred toward the people he had been fighting overseas. McKinney decided to bomb the local mosque\, but when he came face-to-face with a welcoming community\, his plans – and his life – took an unexpected turn. \nGather at the Museum for a screening of the 2023 Academy Award-nominated documentary Stranger at the Gate\, which follows the story of Mac McKinney and the community he encountered. The film will be followed by a discussion between the film’s leading subjects\, Richard “Mac” McKinney\, and Bibi Bahrami\, as well as the film’s director\, Josh Seftel. DESCRIPTION:The debate as to whether Demotic (the spoken language of ordinary people) or Katharevousa (a cultivated recreation of Ancient Greek) should be the official language of Greece was a major political and cultural issue throughout the 19th and 20th century. A question of identity\, class\, and history\, the language question has much to tell us about Greece\, the Greek people\, and the weight of history. DESCRIPTION:The South Side Community Art Center\, in collaboration with Mural Arts presents Mapping Black Archives\, a collage workshop hosted by Alexandra Antoine\, with Andrea Yarbrough. This is an invitation to explore Black archives through collage using maps\, magazines\, ephemera\, and photos of black women as source material. The final works will be markers\, honoring Black women cultural workers. Each marker is reserved space in Yarbrough’s forthcoming installation\, Collective Steps\, an homage to the scores of Black women committed to sustaining the South Side Community Arts Center. \nAll materials will be supplied\, however participants are welcome to bring personal ephemera to be included. What is the \nphysical (body) value of a lacemaker？How do we evaluate the damage to the body in the \nprocess of lace-making？The body is the carrier of knowledge and technology of lacemakers \nin Xiaoshan\, and how & why should we protect\, maintain and preserve this knowledge? \n  \n(3) Part Two: 10 minutes: \nPresent the samples of stitches \nTalk about the steps of stitches (4 steps sample work showing) \nShow different types of stitches (Pics) \nShow sample of a bookmark \n  \n(4) Break\, 10 minutes: \n  \n(5) Part three\, 65 minutes: \nExplanation of required materials \nPractice: step-by-step explanation and guidance to make each stitch \nIndividual tips and questions will be answered by the artist and workshop assistant. \n  \n(6) Part four\, 10 minutes: \nView final works \nDiscuss what the participants think about the production process and how they feel \nphysically and mentally during the process.
