SUMMARY:Arte de La Borinqueña - Women's History Month
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is excited to announce our new collaborative exhibition\, Arte de La Borinqueña\, by Creator Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, on display from March 2 – October 26\, 2024. \nThe public opening will be on March 2\, 2024\, from 10 am – 2 pm and will include a “Meet and Greet” with the award-winning graphic novelist and creator of the superhero La Borinqueña\, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, from 10:30 am – 1 pm. \nThrough the serialized comic medium\, Miranda-Rodriguez has effectively emphasized the significance of narrating Puerto Rico’s history\, addressing contemporary social and environmental issues\, and celebrating the diverse Puerto Rican diaspora. La Borinqueña was launched in 2016 under Miranda-Rodriguez’s studio\, Somos Arte\, where he serves as Creative Director and is recognized for his philanthropic contributions. SUMMARY:“Lay Of(f) the Land: Nordic Narratives” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:“Lay of(f) the Land: Nordic Narratives” will open on Friday\, April 5 at 6 p.m. with\nartists Dragos Alexandrescu\, Linnéa Therese Dimitriou\, Heidi-Anett Haugen\, Hanna\nKanto\, Lotta Lampa\, Patricia Rodas\, Anastasia Savinova\, and Madelaine Sillfors.\nProfoundly influenced by Nordic culture\, landscape\, and even weather\, the Art\nAlliance of the Arctic South (A-A-A-S) consists of eight artists whose work spans\nmedium and scale—from intricate collages and life-size sculptural installations to\nevocative video pieces and design objects. Their synergy stems from a shared ethos: a\ndeep-rooted connection to nature\, and a place-specific gaze upon environmental and\ncultural discourses. With this comes an unraveling of identity—both personal and\ncollective. The vast\, almost otherworldly Nordic landscapes serve as both muse and\nnarrative\, embodying themes of colonization (literal and figurative\,) ecological\ndevastation\, and the continual process of mourning and healing. \nFrom their unique vantage points in peripheral locations\, far removed from traditional\nart centers\, the artists offer a distinct and intimate perspective\, shedding light on\nworldwide socio-economic dilemmas and the imminent climate crisis. A heavy\nphysical presence permeates their work\, reflecting both past and present\, tradition and\ncontemporaneity. Vulnerability and empathy underscore their narratives\, prompting\ndeeper existential introspection as they urge viewers to ponder art’s pivotal role amidst\nglobal shifts\, raising imperative questions about our shared future.\nIn essence\, the A-A-A-S encapsulates a delicate balance between the old and the new\,\nthe local and the global. Introducing Northern Scandinavia’s next-wave artists to the\nUnited States\, this group exhibition is set to challenge\, provoke\, and inspire\,\nprompting us all to consider our collective path and the pressing need for change.\nUltimately\, it urges a look inward—to the roots and to the self.\nThe Swedish American Museum has shared art\, culture\, and history from throughout\nthe world and this next Main Gallery exhibit opening provides visitors with an\nopportunity to meet the artists behind the pieces on display. Lay Of(f) the Land:\nNordic Narratives is curated by Vasia Rigou. The exhibit is open at the Swedish\nAmerican Museum from April 5 – June 16.

SUMMARY:Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Chicago’s Loop is an inflection point\, emerging from the pandemic on shaky footing but also with abundant opportunity to transition to something more vibrant\, resilient\, and livable. Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns holds our central business district up to the light\, exploring ways to keep our economic engine humming while diversifying uses and making the Loop more welcoming for everyone. \nThe exhibition frames Chicago’s Loop as a “lab” for examining the shared challenges American downtowns face today. It prompts visitors’ reflection on their own experiences and aspirations and ventures design and policy solutions for reshaping downtowns and our relationship to them. The show espouses the belief that Chicagoans can continue to meet our challenges with vision and resolve\, while also drawing inspiration from more than a century of central area planning and a modern-day exchange of ideas with peer cities. \nLoop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns\, presents a range of projects\, initiatives\, and provocative design ideas centered around four themes: \n\nRESIDE: Where and why are people living downtown?\nRENEW: Can we repurpose existing buildings for long-term public or private gain?\nRECONNECT: Can city dwellers safely and comfortably traverse downtown\, and access its amenities and services?\nREWILD: How are we incorporating green spaces and accommodating nature?\n\nEach theme is developed through a look at case study plans/projects by leading designers\, architects\, and developers. In addition\, a corresponding set of “architectural follies-in-the-round” at the heart of the gallery offers interactive entrypoints for visitors\, inviting engagement with the themes and ideas in unique ways. Further personalizing the content\, vignettes of “downtown denizens” (e.g. residents\, shop owners\, cyclists\, students) feature their individual experiences and hopes for the downtown area. \nTo further drive home the importance of participatory design and planning\, the exhibit features various public engagement strategies and activities\, including interactive elements like an entryway video produced by local podcasters\, 77 Flavors of Chicago\, and a “ballot box” where visitors can write and submit feedback on downtown design issues. \nPhoto of Marina Towers taken by Jason Peterson \nLAB EXPLORER KITS FOR THE FAMILY\nDid you know that the Chicago Loop can be used as a laboratory to learn new things about how we live and play? Stop by the CAC Box Office during the run of this exhibition\, and pick up a Lab Explorer Kit! Contents are designed to engage youth ages 6 to 12.

SUMMARY:Adler and Adler\, Works by Eli Greene
DESCRIPTION:South Side Community Art Center X Independent Curators International Present Adler and Adler\, Works by Eli Greene\nJUNE 8-AUGUST 31 | Opening June 8\, 2024 \nWORKS BY ELI GREENE \nCURATED BY AMBER NAX \nThe South Side Community Art Center\, in partnership with ICI\, presents “Adler & Adler\,” a poignant response by Chicago-based artist Eli Greene to the Adler & Adler Studio Collection. This Black-owned photography studio archive was once a monument in the Black Bottom neighborhood of Detroit. Founded circa 1910 by Charles and Mamie L. Adler\, the studio was one of Detroit’s earliest Black photographic businesses. Adler & Adler Studio was where people celebrated and immortalized the joys of everyday life: graduations\, weddings\, and the arrival of new family members. This site and Black photography studios across the country were beacons of empowerment\, offering Black communities new agency in self-representation. \nWhen the Adlers passed away in 1973\, they left no heirs\, and the studio\, along with its collection of photographs\, was left behind. Some of these photographs were later discovered and sold to The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History\, where they now reside as a testament to the studio’s enduring impact. \nAlongside the Adler & Adler images are (10) contemporary photographs of the site\, a drawing inspired by the studio backdrops in the original photos\, and a sound/video work. The work is invested in themes of memory\, trace\, and ghosts. \nGreene’s work reflects on the photography studio as a site of moments and memories enacted by those who ask for their picture to be made and those who make it. The interplay of these two research modalities provides us with new ways to think about how we engage with archives and memories and\, ultimately\, how to breathe new life into them.

SUMMARY:3rd Fridays Free Admission Museum Night
DESCRIPTION:Free Admission Museum Nights take place every third Friday of each month from 5 pm to 8 pm! The tour will start at 6 PM on time. All tours depart from the reception desk\, and please be sure to arrive on time. The event offers wine and appetizers. \nThis Friday at 7-7:40 PM\, our Resident Artist 2024 – Irene Hsiao will perform at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art as part of the project If The Sky Could Dream.  \nAbout the Tour –  \nLearn about Asian Art in the Heritage Museum of Asian Art with a guided hour-long tour around the gallery. Museum-trained interns and volunteers will give a talk on selected artworks. Each word is packed with fascinating insights\, information\, and stories. During this participatory experience\, you’ll connect with works from across the collection and get a close look at highlighting artworks. Visitors of all ages are welcome. \nPlease note tours may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \nAbout the project –  \nIF THE SKY COULD DREAM focuses on the Chinese dragon as a powerful being that fosters harmony. This creature is emblematic of China as well as a mythological being for many Asian and Western cultures and thus evokes a sense of mysticism\, and intrigue in many communities. Representing the Chinese Dragon as a water deity\, the installation series will feature images and projections of the weather and local bodies of water in Chicago. \nIf The Sky Could Dream is supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant \nAbout Irene Hsiao \nIrene Hsiao creates performances in conversation with visual art in museums\, galleries\, and public spaces\, a practice that includes site-specific interaction with visual artworks and experimental engagement with artists\, institutions\, and the public. Find out more through our website. \nAccessibility \nThe Heritage Museum of Asian Art’s Entrance is on West 35th Street. Take the elevator to the third floor and turn right to the Museum Reception Desk. Accessible and standard toilets are located on the same floor. Free parking space is available next to the museum via West 35th Street. \nIf you have any programming questions\, don’t hesitate to get in touch with info@heritageasianart.org or 312-842-8884.

SUMMARY:What You Didn’t Learn on the Boat Tour
DESCRIPTION:Although our docents go into great depth covering the history of over 50 buildings on the CAC’s renowned River Cruise\, that ninety-minute tour is still not enough time to share all of the interesting facts about the architecture along the Chicago River. Join CAC docents as they share the “extra” stories about the buildings and people that make the Chicago River so special. \nThis illustrated talk features some of our favorite “deleted scenes” from the CAFC River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady. Explore new thinking that may reverse your opinion of the Chicago River reversal. Meet a Chicago woman who embodied our city’s “I Will” motto. Slip under the glass skin to the concrete bones of a structural marvel. Ponder a question asked by every Chicago driver from 1908 to today. If you’ve ever approached a river cruise docent after your tour and asked\, “can you tell me more?” this presentation is for you! \nProgram Presenters: \nJosh Brickman \nJosh has a master’s degree in Structural Engineering and practiced in the City of Chicago for seven years. Now working as a software developer\, he continues to give architectural tours with CAC\, weaving science stories and physics facts into his tales about architecture and history. \nSusan Frost \nSusan has been giving architecture tours in the Chicago area for 25 years\, and has been a CAC docent since 2015. She has a BA in Art History and an abiding love of historic preservation and Chicago history. The question from guests that she can never answer is “what is your favorite building?” \nAlison Schlickman \nAlison has been a docent since 2015. As a fourth generation Chicagoan\, she loves Chicago’s architecture and history. Becoming a docent after a long career with the Federal Reserve has given her the chance to share her enthusiasm for Chicago with guests from far and wide. Being part of the Chicago Architecture Center has been a joy and a privilege for Alison.
