SUMMARY:Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Chicago’s Loop is an inflection point\, emerging from the pandemic on shaky footing but also with abundant opportunity to transition to something more vibrant\, resilient\, and livable. Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns holds our central business district up to the light\, exploring ways to keep our economic engine humming while diversifying uses and making the Loop more welcoming for everyone. \nThe exhibition frames Chicago’s Loop as a “lab” for examining the shared challenges American downtowns face today. It prompts visitors’ reflection on their own experiences and aspirations and ventures design and policy solutions for reshaping downtowns and our relationship to them. The show espouses the belief that Chicagoans can continue to meet our challenges with vision and resolve\, while also drawing inspiration from more than a century of central area planning and a modern-day exchange of ideas with peer cities. \nLoop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns\, presents a range of projects\, initiatives\, and provocative design ideas centered around four themes: \n\nRESIDE: Where and why are people living downtown?\nRENEW: Can we repurpose existing buildings for long-term public or private gain?\nRECONNECT: Can city dwellers safely and comfortably traverse downtown\, and access its amenities and services?\nREWILD: How are we incorporating green spaces and accommodating nature?\n\nEach theme is developed through a look at case study plans/projects by leading designers\, architects\, and developers. In addition\, a corresponding set of “architectural follies-in-the-round” at the heart of the gallery offers interactive entrypoints for visitors\, inviting engagement with the themes and ideas in unique ways. Further personalizing the content\, vignettes of “downtown denizens” (e.g. residents\, shop owners\, cyclists\, students) feature their individual experiences and hopes for the downtown area. \nTo further drive home the importance of participatory design and planning\, the exhibit features various public engagement strategies and activities\, including interactive elements like an entryway video produced by local podcasters\, 77 Flavors of Chicago\, and a “ballot box” where visitors can write and submit feedback on downtown design issues. \nPhoto of Marina Towers taken by Jason Peterson \nLAB EXPLORER KITS FOR THE FAMILY\nDid you know that the Chicago Loop can be used as a laboratory to learn new things about how we live and play? Stop by the CAC Box Office during the run of this exhibition\, and pick up a Lab Explorer Kit! Contents are designed to engage youth ages 6 to 12.

SUMMARY:Disruptors Exhibition - Celebrating 50 Years of Chicago Women in Architecture
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition celebrates the legacy of Chicago women who have shaped architecture and design industries in the Windy City and beyond through the lens of the 50th anniversary of the Chicago Women in Architecture (CWA) professional group. \nDISRUPTERS showcases the trailblazing founders of CWA\, who 50 years ago broke through the barriers of a male-dominated industry. These pioneers\, lacking their own space\, sat on the floor of an office to conceive of an organization that would support and uplift women in architecture. The exhibition traces CWA’s journey over the past five decades\, celebrating the progress the group has made and its lasting impact on the field while taking a look at the splinter groups that emerged from CWA\, some more disruptive than others. \nThe exhibit was developed in partnership with CWA\, Wink Design\, Ross Barney Architects\, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).

SUMMARY:An Afternoon of Beethoven\, Brahms\, and Barton Pine
DESCRIPTION:The Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra announces an unforgettable concert featuring the timeless masterpieces of Beethoven and Brahms\, with a special performance by renowned violinist Rachel Barton Pine. Join us on November 10\, 2024\, at 3:00 PM at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church for an afternoon of extraordinary music. \nEnhance your concert experience by attending our pre-concert lecture at 1:45 PM\, led by Assistant Conductor\, Eli Chen. Chen will provide fascinating insights into the program\, offering a deeper understanding of the historical and musical context of Beethoven’s and Brahms’ works\, as well as Rachel Barton Pine’s interpretation of Brahms’ Violin Concerto. \nProgram Highlights: \nGIOACCHINO ROSSINI Overture to The Barber of Seville \nJOHANNES BRAHMS Violin Concerto \nLUDWIG van BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 7 \nPerformers: \nRachel Barton Pine Violin \nElmhurst Symphony Orchestra \nStephen Alltop\, Music Director and Conductor \nWhat’s Interesting About This Concert: \nAmerican pianist and comedian Oscar Levant once tried to talk his way out of a speeding ticket by saying\, “You can’t possibly hear the last movement of Beethoven’s Seventh and go slow!” We agree\, and preemptively caution you as you drive home from this concert. Opening with the charming and witty Barber of Seville Overture (you might fondly recall the Bugs Bunny cartoon)\, this concert welcomes Rachel Barton Pine to our stage for the Violin Concerto by Johannes Brahms. \nA Musical First: This concert will mark the first performance of Brahms’ Violin Concerto during Maestro Stephen Alltop’s tenure as Music Director. \nTicket Information: \nTickets for Beethoven\, Brahms\, and Barton Pine are available for purchase online\, by phone\, or at the box office on the day of the event. Discounted prices are available for seniors and students. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness an extraordinary musical journey! \nFor tickets and more information\, please visit ElmhurstSymphony.org or call the ESA office at 630-941-0202 (Monday through Friday\, 10 AM-3 PM). \nTo hear the concert pieces ahead of time visit ElmhurstSymphony.org.

SUMMARY:Architects on Housing Solutions
DESCRIPTION:How can we address the housing crisis in a way that increases social equity? How can architecture and design help achieve these goals? Our panel of seasoned housing designers sets out to find answers. \nCities across the nation face a severe crisis in housing affordability. More than 40% of the U.S. population struggles with monthly housing costs. This situation has multiple complex causes that transcend design-based solutions\, but architects are nevertheless key to the systemic change required in how we deliver quality housing\, and to whom. \nHousing the Nation: Social Equity\, Architecture\, and the Future of Affordable Housing (Rizzoli\, 2024)\, edited by Alexander Gorlin and Victoria Newhouse\, includes contributions from economists\, community organizers\, lawyers\, planners and architects\, all actively involved in addressing the housing crisis. Our conversation with innovative architectural practitioners and contributors to Housing the Nation\, moderated by former Chicago housing commissioner Marisa Novara\, will echo the essay collection in examining our present-day situation and the pragmatism needed to make inroads toward housing justice. The book will be on sale before and after the event at the CAC Design Store and online at shop.architecture.org. \nImage: Oso Apartments Courtesy of Canopy Architecture + Design

SUMMARY:3rd Fridays Free Admission Museum Night
DESCRIPTION:Free Admission Museum Nights take place every third Friday of each month from 5 pm to 8 pm! The tour will start at 6 PM on time. All tours depart from the reception desk\, and please be sure to arrive on time. The event offers wine and appetizers. \nThis Friday at 7-7:40 PM\, our Resident Artist 2024 – Irene Hsiao will perform at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art as part of the project If The Sky Could Dream.  \nAbout the Tour –  \nLearn about Asian Art in the Heritage Museum of Asian Art with a guided hour-long tour around the gallery. Museum-trained interns and volunteers will give a talk on selected artworks. Each word is packed with fascinating insights\, information\, and stories. During this participatory experience\, you’ll connect with works from across the collection and get a close look at highlighting artworks. Visitors of all ages are welcome. \nPlease note tours may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \nAbout the project –  \nIF THE SKY COULD DREAM focuses on the Chinese dragon as a powerful being that fosters harmony. This creature is emblematic of China as well as a mythological being for many Asian and Western cultures and thus evokes a sense of mysticism\, and intrigue in many communities. Representing the Chinese Dragon as a water deity\, the installation series will feature images and projections of the weather and local bodies of water in Chicago. \nIf The Sky Could Dream is supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant \nAbout Irene Hsiao \nIrene Hsiao creates performances in conversation with visual art in museums\, galleries\, and public spaces\, a practice that includes site-specific interaction with visual artworks and experimental engagement with artists\, institutions\, and the public. Find out more through our website. \nAccessibility \nThe Heritage Museum of Asian Art’s Entrance is on West 35th Street. Take the elevator to the third floor and turn right to the Museum Reception Desk. Accessible and standard toilets are located on the same floor. Free parking space is available next to the museum via West 35th Street. \nIf you have any programming questions\, don’t hesitate to get in touch with info@heritageasianart.org or 312-842-8884.

SUMMARY:Framed Views (Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:This year\, for the first time\, CAC hosted a Photo Competition during Open House Chicago\, the weekend of October 19-20. Festival-goers of all skill levels were invited to take photos while exploring the city’s architectural sites and submit them in one of four categories: Interior\, Exterior\, Architectural Detail\, and Black & White. \nAfter receiving over 1\,300 submissions\, the photos were reviewed by our curatorial team\, who selected up to twelve finalists for each category. A panel of judges including professional photographers and architecture experts will choose winners from each category to be announced following the opening of the exhibition. Finalists and winners will be on display at The Center\, offering a unique look at the sites and spaces explored during the Open House Chicago weekend. \nThis exhibition is a chance to celebrate the diverse architecture of Chicago through the eyes of the community. Visit to see how different photographers captured the beauty and details of our city. \n\nPhoto by Jennifer Shanahan
