DESCRIPTION:In this new exhibition\, the Chicago-based Greek American photographer presents 80 historic works showcasing Chicago’s Greek American celebrations alongside other ethnic and cultural festivals and parades\, primarily from the 1970s and 1980s. Depicted events include the Greek Independence Day Parade\, Bud Billiken Day Parade\, Chinese New Year Parade\, Mexican Civic Society Parade\, Jewish Festival and many more. \nThe National Hellenic Museum’s mission is to share Greek history\, art and culture\, and the Greek American experience. Diane’s works vividly capture how Chicago’s Greek American community gathers in the public space to show pride in its identity and share its culture. Through her images of other ethnic and cultural celebrations\, Diane also explores the universality of how Chicagoans gather together to show pride in their diverse communities. \nGather Together: Chicago Street Photography by Diane Alexander White will be exhibited at the National Hellenic Museum through April 30\, 2023. DESCRIPTION:We invite you to the exhibition UKRAINE WILL RESURRECT!\nApril 7-30\, 2023.\nOpening: Friday\, April 7 at 7:00 p.m.\nFor over a year\, each event in the Ukrainian National Museum is a reminder of the war against Ukraine by russian terrorists\, which takes the best\, killing children\, schoolchildren\, students\, civilians\, and soldiers who defend the whole world from Putin’s aggression.\nThe international exhibit titled “Unissued Diplomas and their unwritten Easter eggs” showcases posthumously issued diplomas to students from Ukraine. The photos of students\, the spiritual meaning of Easter\, and the unwritten Easter eggs tell a sacred story of deceased people. These students died from rocket attacks and shelling during the evacuation\, while on a volunteer mission\, or during fierce battles on the front line.\n“Unissued Diplomas” is a documentary in memory of those Ukrainian students who perished as a result of russian aggression against Ukraine and will never become graduates.\nFebruary 24\, 2022\, is written in history as the day when Ukraine woke to air raid sirens\, rockets\, and shelling.\nThe Kyiv-Mohyla Academy exchange program at the University of Toronto and the Ukrainian-Canadian Union of Students (SUSK) were the organizers of the project – “We want to honor the memory of Ukrainian students who sacrificed their education\, life goals\, aspirations\, and dreams for the sake of our country.”\nThe international exhibition is presented in 45 universities and many Ukrainian embassies in 22 countries.\nThe Ukrainian National Museum supports Mark Tomashek’s initiative\, a student from Lviv\, and community activist Liliia Popovych from Chicago\, and presents this project within the exhibition “UKRAINE WILL RESURRECT!”. The show was previously displayed at the University of Illinois.\nMuseum visitors will enjoy a fantastic palette of Pysanky (Easter Eggs). The exhibit will include pysanky created by Anna Chychula\, Pysanka Artist (Pysankarka)\, from Oleg Kurylo’s private collection\, and paintings from the museum’s collection. Anna Chychula learned the art of writing pysanky from her mother\, Parania Dudycz\, who survived World War II as a young woman and came to the US as a refugee from the Displaced Persons Camps with her husband Ivan and their young children. Anna’s pysanky are amulets embedded with prayers for the Victory of Ukraine and faith in its Armed Forces. Symbols for Easter eggs are carefully selected. The octagonal star symbolizes the unity of two crosses and creates harmony and peace; oak leaves are symbols of strength.\nTogether to Victory!\nCurator Maria Klimchak\, co-curator Anna Chychula.

Castillo and Wil Sands\, which compiles documentary photography\, video\, archival materials\, and personal and political discourse to present the physical and symbolic boundaries that form America’s borders. The resulting images and documents not only provide tangibility to an abstract space but offer those within it visibility and voice.  \nBoth veteran photojournalists\, Castillo and Sands spent months documenting and collaborating with migrants in Mexico and at the US border. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Korean Cultural Center of Chicago and curated by SAIC (School of Art Institute of Chicago) KSA (Korean Student Association) Curating team\, the invitational exhibition asks each artist what their Utopia looks like. In this exhibition\, we invite you to explore the concept of Utopia through the lens of ten rising Korean artists. Each artist presents their unique vision of utopia\, which is shaped not only by their aspirations as artists\, but also by their cultural identity. By pushing the boundaries of their creativity and striving towards their own personal Utopias\, the ten artists\, inspire us to imagine utopia for ourselves and for the world we share. We hope that you will join us in experiencing the diverse stories and perspectives of these talented individuals throughout the exhibition space.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our artist discussion about their work and who they are as artists. There will be a live Q&A at the end of each discussion.\nValaria Tatera is a Wisconsin based installation artist\, activist and lecturer whose work investigates the intersection of ethnicity\, gender\, commerce\, and the environment. An enrolled member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa\, Valaria explores self identity and contemporary Indigenous issues such as the impact of colonization on Indigenous Erasure\, Visibility and Resilience. Her intention is “for the work to hold visual and personal space for statistics that often erase the individual”. Valaria earned an MFA in 3-D from the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, M.A. and B.F.A. in Ceramics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is a recipient of the 2021 Foundation for Contemporary Art micro grant and the 2022 Mary Nohl fellowship for the established artist category. She has exhibited regionally and nationally in galleries and Museums. Recently\, her work was featured at the Museum of Wisconsin Art\, Trout Museum of Contemporary Art\, RAHR Museum\, All My Relations Gallery\, Sweet Briar College\, Truax Gallery and the Wisconsin Biennial. Currently\, her work is at Charles Allis Museum\, Madeline Island Museum\, Mitchell Museum of Indian of the American Indian and will be at the Haggerty Museum.

SUMMARY:On-Site Commemoration: Light Among Darkness: 80th Anniversary of the Rescue of Bulgarian Jews
DESCRIPTION:During World War II\, none of Bulgaria’s approximately 50\,000 Jews were deported to Nazi death camps. This incredible feat was possible thanks to Bulgarian politicians\, administrators\, officers\, clergymen\, intellectuals\, and ordinary citizens who refused to yield to Nazi pressure. The Bulgarian state also facilitated transportation for Jewish refugees from Central and Eastern Europe\, and Bulgaria’s embassies and consulates issued around 15\,000 transit visas to Jews fleeing other countries. \nLearn more about the extraordinary acts by Bulgarians to save their Jewish community during World War II with Professor Michael Bar-Zohar\, winner of the Skolov Award for his achievements as a journalist and author of several books\, including biographies recounting the rescue of Bulgarian Jews from Nazis in World War II; and Svetoslav Stankov\, Consul General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Chicago. Their conversation will reflect upon the significance of the 80th anniversary of the rescue of Bulgarian Jews and how we must continue to resist antisemitism and hatred today. \nReservations required. SUMMARY:Chicago's Annual Polish Constitution Day Parade
DESCRIPTION:Join us and show your Polish pride by marching with the Polish Museum of America to celebrate the 232nd anniversary of the Polish Constitution\, the first democratic constitution in Europe. \nThe Parade begins at 11:30 am on Saturday\, May 6\, 2023. The PMA is Unit #12. We are meeting at the corner of Columbus Dr. and Balbo St. The official route runs along Columbus\, from Balbo to Monroe. We recommend wearing your most comfortable walking shoes\, and something white and red\, if possible. \nFollowing the parade\, all are invited to attend the Great Constitutional Concert at the Chopin Garden in Grant Park (11th & Michigan Ave) at 2 pm.
