SUMMARY:Arte de La Borinqueña - Women's History Month
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is excited to announce our new collaborative exhibition\, Arte de La Borinqueña\, by Creator Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, on display from March 2 – October 26\, 2024. \nThe public opening will be on March 2\, 2024\, from 10 am – 2 pm and will include a “Meet and Greet” with the award-winning graphic novelist and creator of the superhero La Borinqueña\, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, from 10:30 am – 1 pm. \nThrough the serialized comic medium\, Miranda-Rodriguez has effectively emphasized the significance of narrating Puerto Rico’s history\, addressing contemporary social and environmental issues\, and celebrating the diverse Puerto Rican diaspora. La Borinqueña was launched in 2016 under Miranda-Rodriguez’s studio\, Somos Arte\, where he serves as Creative Director and is recognized for his philanthropic contributions. The story emerged during a critical period for the Puerto Rican people\, marked by an economic crisis and natural disasters in the Caribbean. La Borinqueña has transcended fiction\, evolving into a philanthropic superhero movement with a collection of graphic novels\, a special benefit anthology with DC Comics titled Ricanstruction\, and noteworthy partnerships with NRDC\, Chocolate Cortés\, and others.

SUMMARY:Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Chicago’s Loop is an inflection point\, emerging from the pandemic on shaky footing but also with abundant opportunity to transition to something more vibrant\, resilient\, and livable. Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns holds our central business district up to the light\, exploring ways to keep our economic engine humming while diversifying uses and making the Loop more welcoming for everyone. \nThe exhibition frames Chicago’s Loop as a “lab” for examining the shared challenges American downtowns face today. It prompts visitors’ reflection on their own experiences and aspirations and ventures design and policy solutions for reshaping downtowns and our relationship to them. The show espouses the belief that Chicagoans can continue to meet our challenges with vision and resolve\, while also drawing inspiration from more than a century of central area planning and a modern-day exchange of ideas with peer cities. \nLoop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns\, presents a range of projects\, initiatives\, and provocative design ideas centered around four themes: \n\nRESIDE: Where and why are people living downtown?\nRENEW: Can we repurpose existing buildings for long-term public or private gain?\nRECONNECT: Can city dwellers safely and comfortably traverse downtown\, and access its amenities and services?\nREWILD: How are we incorporating green spaces and accommodating nature?\n\nEach theme is developed through a look at case study plans/projects by leading designers\, architects\, and developers. In addition\, a corresponding set of “architectural follies-in-the-round” at the heart of the gallery offers interactive entrypoints for visitors\, inviting engagement with the themes and ideas in unique ways. Further personalizing the content\, vignettes of “downtown denizens” (e.g. residents\, shop owners\, cyclists\, students) feature their individual experiences and hopes for the downtown area. \nTo further drive home the importance of participatory design and planning\, the exhibit features various public engagement strategies and activities\, including interactive elements like an entryway video produced by local podcasters\, 77 Flavors of Chicago\, and a “ballot box” where visitors can write and submit feedback on downtown design issues. \nPhoto of Marina Towers taken by Jason Peterson \nLAB EXPLORER KITS FOR THE FAMILY\nDid you know that the Chicago Loop can be used as a laboratory to learn new things about how we live and play? Stop by the CAC Box Office during the run of this exhibition\, and pick up a Lab Explorer Kit! Contents are designed to engage youth ages 6 to 12.

SUMMARY:Disruptors Exhibition - Celebrating 50 Years of Chicago Women in Architecture
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition celebrates the legacy of Chicago women who have shaped architecture and design industries in the Windy City and beyond through the lens of the 50th anniversary of the Chicago Women in Architecture (CWA) professional group. \nDISRUPTERS showcases the trailblazing founders of CWA\, who 50 years ago broke through the barriers of a male-dominated industry. These pioneers\, lacking their own space\, sat on the floor of an office to conceive of an organization that would support and uplift women in architecture. The exhibition traces CWA’s journey over the past five decades\, celebrating the progress the group has made and its lasting impact on the field while taking a look at the splinter groups that emerged from CWA\, some more disruptive than others. \nThe exhibit was developed in partnership with CWA\, Wink Design\, Ross Barney Architects\, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).

SUMMARY:10th Annual Irish American Movie Hooley
DESCRIPTION:         \n  \n  \nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: \nMike Houlihan \n312-431-8700\, hiberniantransmedia@gmail.com \n  \nIRISH AMERICAN MOVIE HOOLEY \nRETURNS FOR 2024 \n  \nWhen a party gets rowdy\, the Irish call it a “hooley.” \nTullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey & Hibernian Media proudly announce film selections for their 10th Annual “Irish American Movie Hooley”\, scheduled this year at The Wilmette Theatre in Wilmette Sept. 27-28-29\, 2024. It’s the only Irish American film festival in the world and this year we are so excited to present three extraordinary films. \nOpening the Movie Hooley on Friday September 27th at 8PM will be the World Premiere  SINS OF IRELAND. written and directed by our old friend Alex Fegan\, who will attend this year’s Hooley. This feature documentary is told “Through the prism of the confession box\, which has its origins in Ireland\, Sins of Ireland  is a portrait of an overlooked aspect of Ireland’s past and how it impacted many parts of the world. Fifteen Irish priests\, known for hearing the confessions\, outline what confession was supposed to be and\, while confessing the sins of the church\, what it became.” John Byrne of RTE calls it\, “Genius – it would be a sin to miss it” \nSaturday night\, September 28th\, will feature the 8PM special Chicago screening of KNEECAP\, written and directed by Rich Peppiatt. Don’t miss this film\, it’s bravura filmmaking at its Irish best! Michael Phillips of the Tribune recently wrote “Kneecap’ is a rousing Belfast hip hop ode to native tongues everywhere!” This film is often in the Irish language with English sub-titles and celebrates the funny\, sexy\, side of Irish rebellion with this coda\, “Every word of Irish spoken is a bullet for Irish freedom.” Jessica Reynolds\, the young actress who plays the sultry\, “Georgia” the Femme fatale in KNEECAP\, will make a personal appearance at this special screening.\n  \nFinally on Sunday at 5PM\, Sept. 29th\, the Hooley will present the Chicago premiere of Rita Davern’s evocative documentary film\, STORIES I DIDN’T KNOW “It’s a family reunion … what could go wrong? Plenty\, as we soon learn when Rita Davern exposes an ugly reality at the heart of a family legend.”  We encourage our audience to come and meet Rita as she tells an emotional tale of her family\, their roots in Ireland\, and the shocking truths she’s discovered along the way. \n  \nNow in its’ tenth year\, the Movie Hooley has introduced audiences to the very best in Irish and Irish American filmmaking\, with opportunities to meet each individual writer\, director\, actor\, or producer who have brought their films to Chicago\, this year once again bringing the films directly to our audiences at The Wilmette Theatre in Wilmette. \n  \nChicago Tribune columnist Rick Kogan said\, “If your image of the Irish is trapped in some sort of playful Shamrock- “Danny Boy” realm\, prepare yourselves for the dark but altogether satisfying world represented by the latest offerings of this year’s Irish American Movie Hooley.” \n  \nThe films have grown in stature each year and the 10th Annual Movie Hooley promises to be our best yet. The Annual Movie Hooley is presented by Hibernian Media NFP\, our local public charity dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Irish culture. We are proud to partner with Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey in presenting this year’s Hooley.  Hibernian also produces a pair of weekly Irish American radio programs\, their community web blog FreeCraic.com\, an annual pilgrimage to Ireland\, and a variety of other film\, TV\, live concerts and literary endeavors. \n  \nSponsors of the 10th Annual Irish American Movie Hooley include The Hilton Chicago\, Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey and Madden Funds.. \n  \nTickets for each film are $12 and snacks and drinks are offered in the lobby. \n  \nWilmette theatre 847-251-7424\, \nwilmettetheatre.com \n1122 Central Ave\, Wilmette\, IL \nFor more information about the Movie Hooley\, visit: https://hibernianmedia.org/movie-hooley/ \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:History Course: The Germanen At the Crossroads of Antiquity
DESCRIPTION:Date: \nStart\nThursday\, October 03\, 2024 \nTime: \nLocation: \nLocation\nDANK Haus: 2nd Floor\, Brauhaus Room \n\n \nThe Germanen: At the Crossroads of Antiquity \nHistory Course presented by Mike Haas \nBegins October 3\, 2024 \nThursday nights\, 7-9 PM \nWestern European civilization arose from its encounter with the cultures of Rome\, Athens & Jerusalem. It was at these crossroads of antiquity that the ancient Germanen would appear on the world stage as warlike barbarians—to the Romans and Greeks—and soulless pagans—to Jews and Christians. It was at the confluence of these cultures\, however\, that the identity of Western Europe would gradually take shape.  \nIndeed\, as these ancient cultures clashed\, overlapped and intersected\, the center of geo-political power in antiquity shifted from the Hellenic East to Rome. It was from the monotheism of Jerusalem that Christianity was derived\, and once Rome adopted the fledgling faith\, so would the Germanic successor kingdoms in the western half of the former Roman Empire during the 6th\, 7th & 8th centuries. \nIt would be these same ancient Germanen\, however\, who would not only assimilate Roman culture and Christian religiosity but in time leave their own cultural imprint on what became known as the Holy Roman Empire. A powerful Western European geo-political entity during the Early Middle Ages\, it was founded by Karl der Grosse (Charlemagne)\, a West Germanic/Frankish tribal king into whose hands was laid the defense of Western Christendom by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day in Rome in the year 800. For his vision and endeavors in putting Western Europe on a path leading out of the Dark Ages\, Karl would be heralded as the Father of Europe. \nJoin us\, then\, for an exploration of Germanic Antiquity and its Kultur to find out what recorded history tells us of these martially vigorous Germanen\, who carried mighty and swift swords but few of whom could read or write. \nThis course will provide participants an excellent opportunity to broaden their general knowledge and basic understanding of early German history. No textbooks\, no homework\, no papers\, no tests or German language skills required. Just a sincere interest to come/learn and come/share in a relaxed\, laid-back setting in the DANK Haus itself or on Zoom within the cozy confines of your own abode. \nMike Haas\, Course Presenter

The caliph would like to have this magic horse by all means\, but in exchange he is to give his charming daughter Dinarsade to the ugly sorcerer to be his wife. This angers Dinarsade’s brother Ahmed\, and he chases the intruder away. The sorcerer\, however\, finds a way of luring the prince onto the fateful horse. Thus begins Achmed’s adventurous journey. While the sorcerer is put in chains\, the horse with the horrified prince on its back rises in the air\, into the starry sky. Finally\, the prince discovers the lever that propels the horse downwards\, and they land on the island of Wak Wak. The island is the home of the beautiful Pari Banu\, ruler of Wak Wak\, whom Prince Achmed immediately falls in love with and carries off to distant lands on his magic horse. \nCost\nWe are pleased to offer this program at a discount for our Friends of DANK Haus (What’s this?)\nFriends of DANK Haus: $5 | General Public: $7\nFood & Drink available for purchase \n  \nThis film screening is presented in conjunction with the current gallery exhibition\, “Power Frauen: German Women who Dared to Dream” and in collaboration with the Goethe Institute of Chicago. \nFree parking at 5/3 Bank after 6:00 PM located at Western and Gunnison

SUMMARY:Virtual Lunch & Learn: Otto Weidt Workshop for the Blind: Resistance and Rescue in Nazi Berlin
DESCRIPTION:Date: October 16\, 2024 | 12:00pm CDT \nLocation: Online \n  \n\nThe experience of blind people under Nazism is an important – though often overlooked – part of Holocaust history. In honor of Blindness Awareness Month\, join us for a special virtual program presented by Illinois Holocaust Museum’s Director of Education\, Leah Rauch\, that will highlight the profound Upstanderism that one member of the blind community contributed in resistance to the Nazi regime. \nOtto Weidt’s Workshop was a small workshop that produced brushes and brooms in Nazi Berlin. Under the guise of making products essential to the war effort\, Weidt\, who was blind himself\, employed Jewish workers who were mainly blind\, visually impaired\, and hearing impaired. The workshop not only provided a source of income and protection from deadly forced labor assignments\, but once deportations began\, Weidt secured false papers\, food\, and hiding places for those selected for deportation – including a hidden room in the workshop itself. \nWeidt was not able to save everyone from deportation\, but never stopped trying to save lives\, including an attempt to secure the release of one of his employees from a concentration camp. \nFree to the public. Reservations required. \n\nReserve my spot\n\n

SUMMARY:Can the Dead Weep for the Dead? Zalmen Gradowski and the Theology of the Shoah
DESCRIPTION:Date: October 20\, 2024 | 2:30pm CDT \nLocation: 9603 Woods Drive\, Skokie\, IL 60077 \n  \n\nOn October 7\, 1944\, a group of Jewish prisoners in Auschwitz obtained explosives and rebelled against their Nazi murderers. It was a desperate yet brave uprising that resulted in the death of more than 400 prisoners by day’s end\, including Zalmen Gradowski\, the author of The Last Consolation Vanished: The Testimony of a Sonderkommando in Auschwitz. \nWritten in Yiddish and buried in the ashes near Crematorium III\, Gradowski’s testimony documented the horrors of being a Jewish prisoner with the unthinkable task of ushering other Jewish deportees into the gas chambers\, removing their bodies\, and salvaging any valuables. \nNow\, for the first time\, Gradkowski’s memoir has been published in English. Join us for a powerful presentation and discussion about the life and work of Gradowski with the book’s co-editor\, distinguished professor at the University of Chicago\, Arnold Davidson. \nBooks will be available for purchase at the program. \nFree to the public. SUMMARY:Book & Author: ?The Klansman?s Son?
DESCRIPTION:Date: October 15\, 2024 | 6:30pm CDT \nLocation: 9603 Woods Drive\, Skokie\, IL 60077 \n  \n\nRaised to take over the white nationalist movement in the United States\, R. Derek Black has released a memoir\, The Klansman’s Son\, detailing a childhood manipulated by fear\, their break from a community of hate\, embracing antiracism\, and coming out as transgender. Raised in a world of hate and fear by a former Ku Klux Klan leader\, Derek’s life changed when they renounced white nationalism publicly in 2013. Few understand the ideology\, motivations\, or tactics of the white nationalist movement like Derek – and few have ever made such a profound evolution. \nDon’t miss this fascinating story to gain insight into the complexities of personal change and explore how understanding can combat extremism.
