SUMMARY:NHM Virtual Book Club: Foreign Words
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, February 17th at 7pm we will be discussing Foreign Words by Vassilis Alexakis as translated by Alyson Waters Virtually via Zoom\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJoin the National Hellenic Museum’s Virtual Book Club! \nFacilitated by NHM’s Resident Scholar Dr. Katherine Kelaidis & Manager of Programs & Events Cairo Dye\, each month the NHM Virtual Book Club chooses a book that is either inspired by the Hellenic legacy or by a Greek American author (and sometimes both!). Then we gather to discuss the book on Zoom. \nBook Club is free to join and meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7pm CST \nIn February\, we will be discussing Foreign Words by Vassilis Alexakis and translated by Alyson Waters. \nSupport NHM with your purchase of Foreign Words! When you buy your copy through this link\, a portion of the proceeds will go to NHM: https://amzn.to/3GIFPj4 \nClick here to see all of our upcoming book selections \nMore about Foreign Words: \nCrossing countries and continents\, this narrative follows a son lost for words over the death of his father. Unable to write the phrase “My father is dead” in either his native Greek or his adopted French\, he heads for Africa to undertake the learning of Sango. Traveling across both borders and time\, he examines his past\, his family history\, and the colonial and political ties of his homelands. While at first he does not know why learning a new and uncommon language has become vital to him\, he comes to discover that the new language enables him to easily write of his father’s passing. But as he truly experiences Sango—meets its speakers\, travels where it emerged and has struggled to survive—his intimacy with it grows\, and he is once again unable to utter the telling phrase. Meditating on language\, loss\, and the power of words to express or constrain human emotion\, this tale of speaking\, living\, and letting go is filled with delicate suspense\, humor\, and honesty. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/nhm-virtual-book-club-foreign-words-tickets-224880141557

SUMMARY:Balzekas Museum Film Screening: "Second Hand"
DESCRIPTION:See “Second Hand” (2019) an award-winning documentary on migrants caught up in UK’s used clothing trade by filmmaker Artūras Jevdokimovas \n“Second Hand”\, is a tragicomic tale of the long\, meandering journey of donated second hand clothing: from the doorsteps of English manor houses to smalltown Lithuanian markets and charity shops.\n“Second Hand” (2019) exposes the gritty underside of Europe’s used-clothing trade and the lives of the people caught up in its intricate and far-reaching web. The film exposes how clothes donated to charity in the UK become windfall for profiteers\, who capture and move the goods to second-hand markets in Lithuania and other European countries.\nPart documentary comedy\, part detective story\, “Second Hand” tells the story of four Lithuanian migrants–who come to the UK in search of opportunity but who fall prey to human traffikers and organized criminals. These ringleaders appear to care less for the people they exploit than for the used and discarded clothing they peddle. Despite the clash of cultures and tragicomic incidents\, the four characters manage to maintain hope\, humor\, and dignity in a cruel and inhumane environment thanks to their own grit and to filmmaker/director Artūras Jevdokimovas’s sensitive portrayal . \nMEET FILMMAKER ARTŪRAS JEVDOKIMOVAS\nArtūras Jevdokimovas\, an award-winning Lithuanian filmmaker\, will be on hand for the screening and Q& A afterwards. SUMMARY:Dr Knight Lecture Series: Haitian Immigration to America
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Knight in his lecture series for a conversation on Haitian Immigration to America.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBlack immigrants are often treated differently than those from other nations. Although this does not mean they are treated better\, but black immigrants face far more violence and racism – from local police\, ICE\, and the criminal justice system – than others. This lecture looks at Haitian immigrants in particular and the racial barrier they must navigate entering the United States.

SUMMARY:Movie Screening ONLINE: Älven min Vän
DESCRIPTION:Älven min Vän is a portrait of the lives of four Sami women and their relationship to the Lule River in Sweden. The film shows the consequences of the forced resettlement of Sami people who were displaced from their land because of the construction of river dams and were alienated from their indigenous culture and way of life (such as reindeer husbandry\, clothing\, language\, food and music). At the same time\, the film shows the deep relationship between the women and the river. \nRegister for this free event and receive a link to the movie. SUMMARY:Sharing Grandmothers Concert
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nSharing Grandmothers is an original multidisciplinary song cycle exploring the profound contributions of Black women to humanity.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSharing Grandmothers focuses on women’s oral traditions\, lullabies and folk tales\, as well as the combined musical traditions of Africa and the Caribbean\, replete with percussive rhythms\, rituals\, and vocal expressions. SUMMARY:February Call to Peace
DESCRIPTION:Join us to send peace and love to all countries and meet our inspirational special guest Peter Magai Bul. https://theimmigrantstory.org/lost-boy/\nWe met Peter when he started representing South Sudan in the World Peace Flag Ceremony in 2014 at Peace Day. (Buildthepeace.org) and he has been huge supporter every year since then. Peter embarked on harrowing journey as one of the “Lost Boys and Lost Girls of Sudan” at the age of 8 when his ethnic Dinka population was attacked by the Sudanese government sending thousands of boys and girls separated from their families to survive over a decade struggling for their lives in exile. Hear about how he relied on his strong cultural upbringing to make it through years of unimaginable conditions and then went on to draw on his experiences to become a human rights activist and a community organizer\, inspiring youth to leverage their own experiences to make a change in the world.\nJoin us on Facebook live or on zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83606483086

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: "Naturally"
DESCRIPTION:The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is delighted to announce Naturally opening on February 5th\, 2022 featuring works by Judith Roston Freilich and Lilach Schrag who have come together for their first joint exhibition.\nFascinated by forces of nature and mind\, Judith Roston Freilich and Lilach Schrag examine\, each in her own way\, essence\, energy\, and evolution. Judith Roston Freilich’s works on paper and textiles were inspired by her aspirations to integrate the arts into everyday life. Throughout her life\, Roston Freilich’s home and works have always centered around the cycles of life and the natural offerings of every season. The vital consequences of climate change and the COVID-19 virus have impacted the artist’s work\, and aspires that her artistic creation will act as a springboard for awareness towards scientific ways that aim to heal our planet. With images and materials drawn from both her natural and domestic environment\, Lilach Schrag uses organic found objects\, fabric\, paper\, enamel\, and acrylic paints\, charcoal\, graphite\, threads\, pins\, and staples in making large-scale energy-packed paintings with epic figures and creatures transforming into each other and into vegetation. Layered\, camouflaged\, and not immediately identified\, they convey a sense of awe\, urgency\, determination\, and vulnerability. The natural materials rich with texture\, meaning\, and previous life sends Schrag on a fantastic flight\, and at the same time keeping her grounded in this physical world.\nArtist Biographies:\nJudith Roston Freilich earned a BFA and merit-based scholarship award from Washington University in St. Louis. While working at Landfall Press as a printing assistant and curator\, she earned a graduate degree in printmaking with Misch Kohn from the Illinois Institute of Technology. She has exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been selected for the Rockford Midwestern Biennial at the Rockford Art Museum\, the Evanston and Vicinity Biennial at the Evanston Art Center\, the Bradley International Print and Drawing Show. Her work is in multiple permanent collections including the Library of Congress.\nLilach Schrag graduated from Hamidrasha Art School in Israel\, and holds a Master of Arts from Spertus Institute\, Chicago. Her work has been featured in publications such as the Chicago Tribune\, and The Jerusalem Post\, and she has exhibited in solo and group shows in the United States and in Israel including: Spertus Institute\, Governors State University\, 33 Contemporary Gallery in Chicago as well as the Janco Dada Museum and the Jerusalem Biennale in Israel.

SUMMARY:Swedish American Museum Book Club w/ Author Helen Lundström Erwin
DESCRIPTION:Book Club Online\n\nJanuary 29 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm\n\n\n\nThe Museum book club reads a wide range of books from the Nordic countries.\nThis is a free event and you can register by emailing museum@samac.org. \nFor the January event the author\, Helen Lundström Erwin will join us for book club!! \nHere are the upcoming book club books:\nJanuary\nSour milk in sheep’s wool by Helen Lundström Erwin\nFebruary\nAntiphony by Laila Stien\nMarch\nPakkis by Khalid Hussain \nThe books can be bought in the Museum Store. \nAbout Sour milk in sheep’s wool\nSweden\, at the turn of the 20th century. Two women\, an unwed mother and a suffragette\, living lives so different from each other it’s as if they were separated by time\, not just circumstance. They don’t know it\, but destiny is pulling them toward each other and their fates are interlinked. \nAnette spins lies to hide that she’s an unwed mother with many children. And with different fathers for most of them\, a staggering truth she can barely admit even to herself. Without the ability to protect herself from unwanted pregnancies\, she moves each time she gets pregnant\, telling the same tale as always\, she’s a widow. \nHanna closes her café for the night and opens the door to her activist friends\, creating a space safe from curious husbands and disapproving eyes. Inspired by the pioneer temperance woman Emelie Rathou\, who linked alcohol abuse with the oppression of women\, they join forces with the rest of the nation and the world and begin the long fight for Women’s Suffrage. \nHelen Lundström Erwin\, author of the acclaimed James’ Journey\, has created a well-researched\, and riveting second historical novel. By introducing revolutionary women like Elise Ottesen-Jensen\, the co-founder of International Planned Parenthood Federation\, you’ll be transported back in time\, joining our foremothers while they fight for reproductive justice and the right to vote. \n\nMore info and Zoom event ID at: https://swedishamericanmuseum.org/event/book-club-online-19/

The band summons the bittersweet memories of childhood in Poland\, but more than that\, it is a celebration of life. \nThe band’s history begins in total obscurity\, playing in residential homes for the elderly and small Jewish community organizations\, and builds up into being invited to perform at venues across the country\, including a coveted performance at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. \nAfter a lively performance by the film’s subjects\, Saul Drier and Ruby Sosnowicz\, enjoy a post-performance discussion moderated by Academy Award nominated and Emmy winning filmmaker\, Tod Lending. Lending’s work has aired nationally on ABC\, CBS\, NBC\, PBS\, HBO; has been screened theatrically and awarded at national and international festivals; and has been televised internationally in Europe and Asia. Lending’s work can be found on his website: https://nomadicpictures.org/ \nReservations are required for both on-site and online options. \nProof of COVID-19 vaccination & masks are required to attend on-site programs. \n  \nREGISTER HERE: ilholocaustmuseum.org/events/commemoration-international-holocaust-remembrance-day-live-performance-saul-rubys-holocaust-survivor-band/
