SUMMARY:Schubert\, America\, and the Police
DESCRIPTION:DANK Haus German American Cultural Center\nPresentation and musical performance by Pauline Tan (mezzo-soprano) and Pierre-Nicolas Colombat (pianist) \nWhile many of classical music’s most revered performers\, ensembles\, and institutions are American\, the vast majority of “household names” in classical music are European. The result can feel like Americans are stuck in a never ending game of catch-up. This Eurocentric attitude ignores the deep influence that America had on some of Europe’s most significant figures. \nOne American in particular\, James Fenimore Cooper\, emerges as a uniting thread between individuals as diverse as Franz Schubert\, the Marquis de Lafayette\, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Cooper’s novels enjoyed a massive readership in Europe at a time in which it was undergoing widespread conservative reforms. These books\, which typically depict a collection of diverse characters in times of tumultuous upheaval\, such as in the Leather Stocking Tales trilogy\, proved to be an effective antidote to the Europamüdigkeit (Europe-weariness)afflicting European intellectual life. \nOn his deathbed and in the midst of revising drafts of Winterreise\, Schubert asked for a copy of this American writer’s latest book. Goethe kept notes in his diary of the long list of Cooper’s books he had read. As a testament to the power of the author’s oeuvre as propaganda\, Lafayette invited Cooper to live with him at his estate for several weeks in the hopes that he might feature as a cameo in the writer’s next novel. \nThe American influence was not limited to those who knew Cooper’s novels. Nikolaus Lenau\, one of Schumann’s favored poets\, went so far as to purchase a farm in Ohio and toured modern day New York state extensively. Although his American journey turned out to be a catastrophe\, the Austrian poet had long maintained that witnessing the American wilderness as well as its political project first hand would help him develop his poetic aesthetic. \nThis program features the standard German Romantic tropes of the Wanderer\, the wilderness\, Sehnsucht and Einsamkeit. Centered on the music of Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann as well as the poetry of Nikolaus Lenau and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe\, our selections will highlight the under-appreciated ways in which American audiences and performers can find agency in the context of typically Germanic Romantic repertoire. While the myth of America as the land of burgeoning opportunity rightfully incites the cries of many cynics\, this narrative nevertheless had deep and impactful reverberations in early 19th-century aesthetic movements. In his book\, Craske describes the captivating\, restless workaholic-from his lonely and traumatic childhood in Varanasi to his youthful stardom in his brother’s dance troupe\, from his intensive study of the sitar to his revival of India’s national music scene. Craske has also authored “Rock Faces: The World’s Top Rock’n’Roll Photographers and Their Greatest Images\,” a survey of leading music photographers\, many of whom are featured in South Asia Institute’s exhibition\, Ravi Shankar: Ragamala to Rockstar. Craske\, who contributed much of the exhibition’s text\, will be in conversation with award winning Chicago music writer Aaron Cohen (Chicago Tribune\, DownBeat\, Washington Post\, The Nation\, NPR).

He currently lives and works in Chicago\, IL. Kumar is an Associate Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chair of the Department of Printmedia. \n𝐊𝐮𝐦𝐤𝐮𝐦 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢 the panel moderator\, is the William F. Vilas Research Professor of English and the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.\nDr. Sangari has published extensively on British\, American and Indian literature\, the gendering of South Asian medieval devotional traditions\, nationalist figures such as M.K.Gandhi\, and several contemporary gender issues and communal violence. The film exposes how clothes donated to charity in the UK become windfall for profiteers\, who capture and move the goods to second-hand markets in Lithuania and other European countries.\nPart documentary comedy\, part detective story\, “Second Hand” tells the story of four Lithuanian migrants–who come to the UK in search of opportunity but who fall prey to human traffikers and organized criminals. SUMMARY:Sharing Grandmothers Concert
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nSharing Grandmothers is an original multidisciplinary song cycle exploring the profound contributions of Black women to humanity.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSharing Grandmothers focuses on women’s oral traditions\, lullabies and folk tales\, as well as the combined musical traditions of Africa and the Caribbean\, replete with percussive rhythms\, rituals\, and vocal expressions. The project brings together two multidisciplinary musicians who each embrace a rich cultural heritage and mastery of traditional songs\, stories\, rhythms and dances from their respective cultures. \nThe two principal artists are Inez Barlatier\, a Miami-based Haitian-American singer/songwriter\, percussionist and dancer\, and LORNOAR\, a Cameroonian artist whose work also encompasses traditional and original songs\, music\, and dance. DESCRIPTION:The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is delighted to announce Naturally opening on February 5th\, 2022 featuring works by Judith Roston Freilich and Lilach Schrag who have come together for their first joint exhibition.\nFascinated by forces of nature and mind\, Judith Roston Freilich and Lilach Schrag examine\, each in her own way\, essence\, energy\, and evolution. Judith Roston Freilich’s works on paper and textiles were inspired by her aspirations to integrate the arts into everyday life. Throughout her life\, Roston Freilich’s home and works have always centered around the cycles of life and the natural offerings of every season. The vital consequences of climate change and the COVID-19 virus have impacted the artist’s work\, and aspires that her artistic creation will act as a springboard for awareness towards scientific ways that aim to heal our planet. With images and materials drawn from both her natural and domestic environment\, Lilach Schrag uses organic found objects\, fabric\, paper\, enamel\, and acrylic paints\, charcoal\, graphite\, threads\, pins\, and staples in making large-scale energy-packed paintings with epic figures and creatures transforming into each other and into vegetation. Layered\, camouflaged\, and not immediately identified\, they convey a sense of awe\, urgency\, determination\, and vulnerability. The natural materials rich with texture\, meaning\, and previous life sends Schrag on a fantastic flight\, and at the same time keeping her grounded in this physical world.\nArtist Biographies:\nJudith Roston Freilich earned a BFA and merit-based scholarship award from Washington University in St. Louis. While working at Landfall Press as a printing assistant and curator\, she earned a graduate degree in printmaking with Misch Kohn from the Illinois Institute of Technology. She has exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been selected for the Rockford Midwestern Biennial at the Rockford Art Museum\, the Evanston and Vicinity Biennial at the Evanston Art Center\, the Bradley International Print and Drawing Show. Her work is in multiple permanent collections including the Library of Congress.\nLilach Schrag graduated from Hamidrasha Art School in Israel\, and holds a Master of Arts from Spertus Institute\, Chicago. Her work has been featured in publications such as the Chicago Tribune\, and The Jerusalem Post\, and she has exhibited in solo and group shows in the United States and in Israel including: Spertus Institute\, Governors State University\, 33 Contemporary Gallery in Chicago as well as the Janco Dada Museum and the Jerusalem Biennale in Israel.
