SUMMARY:Movie Screening ONLINE: Älven min Vän
DESCRIPTION:Älven min Vän is a portrait of the lives of four Sami women and their relationship to the Lule River in Sweden. The film shows the consequences of the forced resettlement of Sami people who were displaced from their land because of the construction of river dams and were alienated from their indigenous culture and way of life (such as reindeer husbandry\, clothing\, language\, food and music). At the same time\, the film shows the deep relationship between the women and the river. \nRegister for this free event and receive a link to the movie. You then join the Zoom event to meet the director Hannah Ambühl. To register please email museum@samac.org

SUMMARY:Sharing Grandmothers Concert
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nSharing Grandmothers is an original multidisciplinary song cycle exploring the profound contributions of Black women to humanity.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSharing Grandmothers focuses on women’s oral traditions\, lullabies and folk tales\, as well as the combined musical traditions of Africa and the Caribbean\, replete with percussive rhythms\, rituals\, and vocal expressions. The project brings together two multidisciplinary musicians who each embrace a rich cultural heritage and mastery of traditional songs\, stories\, rhythms and dances from their respective cultures. \nThe two principal artists are Inez Barlatier\, a Miami-based Haitian-American singer/songwriter\, percussionist and dancer\, and LORNOAR\, a Cameroonian artist whose work also encompasses traditional and original songs\, music\, and dance. Under the direction of Miami-based director Carlos Caballero\, a Latino/Caribbean artist\, the work will celebrate the legacy of shared ancestry and traditions between Cameroon and Haiti\, celebrating the influence of Africa on the Caribbean and its diaspora\, and the empowerment of the 21st Century Black Woman. \nSharing Grandmothers is a transatlantic collaboration between two contemporary artists who have jointly created new music and lyrics that provide a modern-day commentary on issues that women face globally\, speaks to the double oppression of Black women both in the U.S. and Africa. \nThis concert is part of the Extended Play Series\, a collaboration between Old Town School of Folk Music\, DuSable Museum and Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center (SRBCC) made possible with the generous support of the Pritzker Traubert Foundation. \nDate and time\n\nSat\, Feb 5\, 2022\, 7:00 PM CST \n\nLocation\n\nSegundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center\n4048 West Armitage Avenue\nChicago\, IL 60639 \n\nTickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sharing-grandmothers-tickets-247261805717

SUMMARY:February Call to Peace
DESCRIPTION:Join us to send peace and love to all countries and meet our inspirational special guest Peter Magai Bul. https://theimmigrantstory.org/lost-boy/\nWe met Peter when he started representing South Sudan in the World Peace Flag Ceremony in 2014 at Peace Day. (Buildthepeace.org) and he has been huge supporter every year since then. Peter embarked on harrowing journey as one of the “Lost Boys and Lost Girls of Sudan” at the age of 8 when his ethnic Dinka population was attacked by the Sudanese government sending thousands of boys and girls separated from their families to survive over a decade struggling for their lives in exile. Hear about how he relied on his strong cultural upbringing to make it through years of unimaginable conditions and then went on to draw on his experiences to become a human rights activist and a community organizer\, inspiring youth to leverage their own experiences to make a change in the world.\nJoin us on Facebook live or on zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83606483086

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: "Naturally"
DESCRIPTION:The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is delighted to announce Naturally opening on February 5th\, 2022 featuring works by Judith Roston Freilich and Lilach Schrag who have come together for their first joint exhibition.\nFascinated by forces of nature and mind\, Judith Roston Freilich and Lilach Schrag examine\, each in her own way\, essence\, energy\, and evolution. Judith Roston Freilich’s works on paper and textiles were inspired by her aspirations to integrate the arts into everyday life. Throughout her life\, Roston Freilich’s home and works have always centered around the cycles of life and the natural offerings of every season. The vital consequences of climate change and the COVID-19 virus have impacted the artist’s work\, and aspires that her artistic creation will act as a springboard for awareness towards scientific ways that aim to heal our planet. With images and materials drawn from both her natural and domestic environment\, Lilach Schrag uses organic found objects\, fabric\, paper\, enamel\, and acrylic paints\, charcoal\, graphite\, threads\, pins\, and staples in making large-scale energy-packed paintings with epic figures and creatures transforming into each other and into vegetation. Layered\, camouflaged\, and not immediately identified\, they convey a sense of awe\, urgency\, determination\, and vulnerability. The natural materials rich with texture\, meaning\, and previous life sends Schrag on a fantastic flight\, and at the same time keeping her grounded in this physical world.\nArtist Biographies:\nJudith Roston Freilich earned a BFA and merit-based scholarship award from Washington University in St. Louis. While working at Landfall Press as a printing assistant and curator\, she earned a graduate degree in printmaking with Misch Kohn from the Illinois Institute of Technology. She has exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been selected for the Rockford Midwestern Biennial at the Rockford Art Museum\, the Evanston and Vicinity Biennial at the Evanston Art Center\, the Bradley International Print and Drawing Show. Her work is in multiple permanent collections including the Library of Congress.\nLilach Schrag graduated from Hamidrasha Art School in Israel\, and holds a Master of Arts from Spertus Institute\, Chicago. Her work has been featured in publications such as the Chicago Tribune\, and The Jerusalem Post\, and she has exhibited in solo and group shows in the United States and in Israel including: Spertus Institute\, Governors State University\, 33 Contemporary Gallery in Chicago as well as the Janco Dada Museum and the Jerusalem Biennale in Israel.

SUMMARY:Swedish American Museum Book Club w/ Author Helen Lundström Erwin
DESCRIPTION:Book Club Online\n\nJanuary 29 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm\n\n\n\nThe Museum book club reads a wide range of books from the Nordic countries.\nThis is a free event and you can register by emailing museum@samac.org. \nFor the January event the author\, Helen Lundström Erwin will join us for book club!! \nHere are the upcoming book club books:\nJanuary\nSour milk in sheep’s wool by Helen Lundström Erwin\nFebruary\nAntiphony by Laila Stien\nMarch\nPakkis by Khalid Hussain \nThe books can be bought in the Museum Store. \nAbout Sour milk in sheep’s wool\nSweden\, at the turn of the 20th century. Two women\, an unwed mother and a suffragette\, living lives so different from each other it’s as if they were separated by time\, not just circumstance. They don’t know it\, but destiny is pulling them toward each other and their fates are interlinked. \nAnette spins lies to hide that she’s an unwed mother with many children. And with different fathers for most of them\, a staggering truth she can barely admit even to herself. Without the ability to protect herself from unwanted pregnancies\, she moves each time she gets pregnant\, telling the same tale as always\, she’s a widow. \nHanna closes her café for the night and opens the door to her activist friends\, creating a space safe from curious husbands and disapproving eyes. Inspired by the pioneer temperance woman Emelie Rathou\, who linked alcohol abuse with the oppression of women\, they join forces with the rest of the nation and the world and begin the long fight for Women’s Suffrage. \nHelen Lundström Erwin\, author of the acclaimed James’ Journey\, has created a well-researched\, and riveting second historical novel. By introducing revolutionary women like Elise Ottesen-Jensen\, the co-founder of International Planned Parenthood Federation\, you’ll be transported back in time\, joining our foremothers while they fight for reproductive justice and the right to vote. \n\nMore info and Zoom event ID at: https://swedishamericanmuseum.org/event/book-club-online-19/

SUMMARY:International Holocaust Remembrance Day Live Performance: Saul & Ruby's Holocaust Survivor Band
DESCRIPTION:January 27\, 2022 | 6:30pm CST\nOn-Site & Virtual\nfrom the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center \nELLEN V. & PHILIP L. GLASS HOLOCAUST COMMEMORATIVE SERIES\nIn honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, join us for a film screening of Saul & Ruby’s Holocaust Survivor Band\, live performance from the Holocaust Survivor Band\, and post-show discussion with the filmmaker. \nThis unique and compelling story is about having the courage to live one’s dreams\, finding purpose and meaning in life at any age\, the transcendent power of music\, and the importance of speaking out against antisemitism and bigotry. \nLike many Holocaust Survivors\, after World War II\, Saul and Ruby moved to America\, started families and careers\, grew old\, and retired to South Florida. For them\, retirement could have been the last chapter in their story. But then they decided to start a klezmer band: the Holocaust Survivor Band. The band summons the bittersweet memories of childhood in Poland\, but more than that\, it is a celebration of life. \nThe band’s history begins in total obscurity\, playing in residential homes for the elderly and small Jewish community organizations\, and builds up into being invited to perform at venues across the country\, including a coveted performance at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. \nAfter a lively performance by the film’s subjects\, Saul Drier and Ruby Sosnowicz\, enjoy a post-performance discussion moderated by Academy Award nominated and Emmy winning filmmaker\, Tod Lending. Lending’s work has aired nationally on ABC\, CBS\, NBC\, PBS\, HBO; has been screened theatrically and awarded at national and international festivals; and has been televised internationally in Europe and Asia. Lending’s work can be found on his website: https://nomadicpictures.org/ \nReservations are required for both on-site and online options. \nProof of COVID-19 vaccination & masks are required to attend on-site programs. \n  \nREGISTER HERE: ilholocaustmuseum.org/events/commemoration-international-holocaust-remembrance-day-live-performance-saul-rubys-holocaust-survivor-band/

SUMMARY:NHM Virtual Book Club: Fifteen Dogs
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, January 20th at 7pm we will be discussing Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis Virtually via Zoom. \nJoin the National Hellenic Museum’s Virtual Book Club in our second year! \nFacilitated by NHM’s Resident Scholar Dr. Katherine Kelaidis & Manager of Programs & Events Cairo Dye\, each month the NHM Virtual Book Club chooses a book that is either inspired by the Hellenic legacy or by a Greek American author (and sometimes both!). Then we gather to discuss the book on Zoom. \nBook Club is free to join and meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7pm CST \nIn January\, we will be discussing Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis. \nSupport NHM with your purchase of Fifteen Dogs! When you buy your copy through this link\, a portion of the proceeds will go to NHM: https://amzn.to/3m3l89A \nSee our other book club selections this year by clicking here \nMore about Fifteen Dogs: \nA bet between the gods Hermes and Apollo leads them to grant human consciousness and language to a group of dogs overnighting at a Toronto veterinary clinic. Suddenly capable of more complex thought\, the pack is torn between those who resist the new ways of thinking\, preferring the old ‘dog’ ways\, and those who embrace the change. The gods watch from above as the dogs venture into their newly unfamiliar world\, as they become divided among themselves\, as each struggles with new thoughts and feelings. Wily Benjy moves from home to home\, Prince becomes a poet\, and Majnoun forges a relationship with a kind couple that stops even the Fates in their tracks. \nAndré Alexis’s contemporary take on the apologue offers an utterly compelling and affecting look at the beauty and perils of human consciousness. By turns meditative and devastating\, charming and strange\, Fifteen Dogs shows you can teach an old genre new tricks. \n  \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/nhm-virtual-book-club-fifteen-dogs-tickets-227135196487

SUMMARY:Online Curator Talk - Cori Sherman North
DESCRIPTION:Cori Sherman North\, Curator of the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg\, KS will talk about the traveling exhibit “Art for All” that opens today in the Main Gallery. \n“Art for All” features paintings\, drawings\, and prints by prominent Swedish-American artists working in the late 19th and early 20th century held in the collections of the Sandzén Gallery and the Hillstrom Museum of Art. Many Swedish artists who came to America brought with them a newly instilled democratic attitude toward art\, codified in the motto “art for all” and promulgated by Konstnärsförbundet (Artists’ League) that was formed in 1886 in Stockholm\, which sprung from a desire to modernize the Swedish Royal Academy and its attitudes. \nFriday\, Jan 14\, 6pm-7pm. \n  \nLearn more: https://swedishamericanmuseum.org/event/art-talk/
