SUMMARY:Musical Performance: A Night at the Savoy: An Enduring Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Believed to be inspired by the earlier Jewish Vacation Guide\, which catalogued hotels that welcomed Jewish travelers\, The Green Book was cherished by Black travelers and touring Black musicians: it was a guide to vibrant neighborhoods like New York City’s Harlem\, Chicago’s Bronzeville\, and Washington\, D.C.’s U Street. \nAs the Black middle class emerged across America in the early 1920s\, widespread automobile ownership opened new opportunities to travel – but Jim Crow laws still posed a threat. Life in this era shifted significantly\, forging a system of laws and customs that segregated public spaces and enforced racial inequality. Navigating the injustices of racial segregation was difficult and\, at times\, dangerous – even for renowned Black artists. Touring was regarded as the hardest part of the job. \nCelebrate the works of Black musicians with a Green Book era-inspired performance by Chicago’s Emmy-Award winning trumpeter\, composer\, and educator Orbert Davis and his Jazz Quartet. Sip on a free signature cocktail and dance the night away to classics of the era at this party celebrating the impact and history of The Green Book on American music. \nReservations required. Free to the public.

SUMMARY:The Life and Times of Sultan Süleyman
DESCRIPTION:This program will be held in-person at the Newberry and livestreamed on Zoom. The online version of this event will be live captioned. Please register below. \nIn-Person Registration: https://reg.learningstream.com/reg/event_page.aspx?ek=0057-0014-c6849d7a4009468cac94034db4dedaba \nLivestream Registration: https://reg.learningstream.com/reg/event_page.aspx?ek=0057-0014-57115b0b9ef94f9cb8575ce316f2dfdb \nJoin us as historian Kaya Şahin\, author of Peerless among Princes: The Life and Times of Sultan Süleyman\, and art historian Elizabeth Rodini discuss the sixteenth-century ruler\, during whose reign the Ottoman Empire became a truly global power. \nSüleyman presided over a multilingual and multireligious empire that promised peace and prosperity to its subjects while he clashed with the Catholic Habsburgs in Europe and the Shiite Safavids in the Middle East. His poetic output\, his appearances during public ceremonies\, his charity\, and his patronage of arts and architecture enhanced his reputation as a universal ruler with a well-rounded character. \nBehind that public façade\, Süleyman led a complicated life. He grew up with an overbearing father whose legacy was an advantage and a burden. Defying established practice\, he married a concubine named Hürrem whose love and affection became his true refuge. Toward the end of his life\, facing both debilitating sickness and the agitations of his sons\, he struggled to remain on the throne. \nCopies of Peerless among Princes: The Life and Times of Sultan Süleyman are available for purchase from the Newberry Bookshop\, and Dr. Şahin will sign books after the program.

SUMMARY:Pop-up Café & Semla Pick up
DESCRIPTION:Semlor (Lenten buns) were originally consumed on fettisdagen\, or Fat Tuesday\, as a celebration before the Christian fasting period of Lent. In modern Sweden\, since strict adherence to Lent has waned\, semlor make their appearance in bakeries from about January through Easter. However\, Semla Day (semmeldagen) is still celebrated on Fat Tuesday every year. King Adolf Frederick died in 1771 after eating 14 servings of semlor. So while indulgence is encouraged on fettisdagen\, it might be best to keep your semla intake to fewer than 10! \nThis year you can preorder yours at the Swedish American Museum. Cost per semla is $5 for members and $6 for non-members. Last order is taken Sunday\, Feb. 19\, 6 p.m. Any purchase of more than 4 semlor has to be pre-ordered. We ask you to limit your order to 6 semlor since we get a lot of orders.

SUMMARY:Aesthetics of Loss Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:AESTHETICS OF LOSS is a collection of work by seven artists who have experienced loss of family members recently. Their studios became places for grieving and understanding the sudden vacuum of losing loved ones either suddenly or over a long period of illness. Caregiving\, memory\, helplessness\, loss and the ultimate mystery of death are explored through painting\, print- making\, fibers\, ceramics\, photography\, installation and video. Some artists utilize objects and clothing left behind by their loved ones and transform them into artworks and some use ritual and natural materials as memorial or commemorative actions of grieving and coming to terms.

DESCRIPTION:AESTHETICS OF LOSS is a collection of work by seven artists who have experienced loss of family members recently. Some artists utilize objects and clothing left behind by their loved ones and transform them into artworks and some use ritual and natural materials as memorial or commemorative actions of grieving and coming to terms. \nEbti is a multidisciplinary artist\, a self-taught photographer and a translator living between Cairo and San Francisco. She received her MFA in Fine Art from the California College of the Arts in 2021. Her practice is informed by languages\, theater\, literature\, music and her family’s making-traditions she never got to learn. Through this multi- faceted\, dislocated lens she looks at the ideas of home\, belonging\, and attachment. Though her work is rooted in photography\, she is constantly looking for new materials and methods that will best translate her ideas. Once she starts working on a project\, she embraces notions of accident and failure. Her practice is ever-evolving and is influenced by her restlessness. \nCassidy Early (b. 1994\, Worcester\, MA) is a nonbinary Scottish American artist living and working in Chicago\, IL. They graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a MFA in Painting in 2020 and received their BFA from Boston University’s College of Fine Arts in 2016. Their work has been published alongside Garth Green- well’s essay Making Meaning: Against Relevance in Art in Harper’s Magazine (Nov. 2020)\, and as the LVL3 Artist of the Week (Nov. 2020). \nBrianna L. Hernández is a Chicana artist\, curator\, educator\, and death doula guided by socially-engaged values. In developing as an artist\, Brianna credits her late mother\, Sylvia D. Hernández\, as her most significant mentor. Brianna’s studio practice focuses on end-of-life care\, grieving processes\, and mourning rituals based on lived experience\, cultural research\, and collaborations with peers. In addition to formal artworks\, she offers workshops or viewers to self-educate on grief and end-of-life planning through the safety of the creative process. As a curator\, Brianna works with artists to make socially-charged topics publicly accessible in order to create opportunities for education and empathy. She also collaborates with community health researchers to incorporate the arts into public health projects through curatorial consulting. Brianna proudly serves as Director of Curation and Board Secretary at Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton\, New York. \nLinda b. Marcus (b. 1961\, Los Angeles\, California) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. SUMMARY:Olga Cerpa & Mestisay
DESCRIPTION:Free (with a suggested donation of $10 at the door).\nReservations are strongly recommended!\nCo-presented with the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center. \nSaturday\, February 11th – 8:00 PM \nOlga Cerpa is the most important female voice of the Canary Islands. Nominated for two Latin Grammys\, she has shared the stage with such artists as Omara Portuondo and Joan Manuel Serrat\, among others. Cerpa and Mestisay use “Jallo\,” an insular word that refers to the objects that the sea throws to the Canary shores\, to create splendid songs inspired by the musical influences that reach the beaches of their native land. Latin America\, Portugal\, Cape Verde and the African continent leave their mark as they revisit island songs that have been “found” in these years of musical journeys and that they rediscover for themselves and their audience through original arrangements. Olga Cerpa y Mestisay will be presenting their latest production\, Palosanto\, where they invited 17 renowned guitarists from around the world to record with them. \nCanary Islands and Puerto Rico \nThe commonalities between Canarios and Boricuas have intrigued generations of islanders from both sides of the Atlantic for decades. Probably the most evident similarity between the smallest of the Greater Antilles and the southernmost archipiélago in Spain is found in the language. However\, the strong connection between these two cultures goes beyond the Caribbean Spanish accent\, and can also be seen in its music\, aboriginal roots\, and profound ties to the African continent. Join us as we celebrate the music of the Canary Island and Puerto Rico in this special co-production of the International Latino Cultural Center and Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center.
