DESCRIPTION:‘Saekdong & Fashion’ Solo Exhibition\n김윤 개인전\n덕성여자대학교 의상디자인전공 부교수 \nExhibition: Feb. 10-Feb. 23\n@KCCoC Gallery\n9925 Capitol Dr. Wheeling\, IL. 60090\nInquiry: (847) 947-4460 \n패션디자인의 표현 영역 중 하나인 패션일러스트레이션은 기존의 패션 드로잉(일러스트레이션)이라는 인식에서 벗어나 빠르게 변화하는 패션 산업 속에서 패션의 새로운 장르로 발전하고 있다. 패션일러스트레이션의 융합적 표현기법 개발을 통해 패션디자인 영역의 대중화와 표현의 폭을 넓히는 작가의 활동은 패션 예술성의 확장과 패션산업의 무경계화적 발전을 보여준다. \nK-Fashion은 다양한 영역에서 표현되고 있다. 이번 작품에서 작가는 글로벌화되어진 K-Fashion의 예술적 범위와 실험적 아이디어 표현 영역을 확장하였다. 특히 한국 전통 패션의 대표적 색과 패턴인 ‘색동’을 통해 한국의 패션이 얼마나 빠르게 글로벌 패션에 스며들고 있는지를 보여주고자 한다. 또한 미니멀한 ‘도형화’로 표현한 한글의 일부를 한국 전통 스트라이프 패턴인‘색동’과 함께 디자인함으로써 K-Fashion의 세련되고 미니멀함을 한국적 색채로 보여준다. \n작가는 핸드크래프트적 아날로그 기법으로 한국 전통 원단에 표현한 핸드 스티치와 핸드드로잉을 사용하였고\, 조형적 특성 강조를 위해 디지털 프로그램을 함께 활용하는 융합적 표현을 보여준다. 이를 통해 패션일러스트레이션 표현의 새로운 방향성을 제시하고 패션일러스트레이션 관련 연구의 범위를 확장하였다. 또한 글로벌 패션산업에서 활용하기 적합한 K-Fashion의 디자인 표현 영역을 넓히는 특별한 전시가 될 것이다.\n \n‘Saekdong & Fashion’\nYoon Kim Solo Exhibition\nAssociate Professor\, Dept. of Fashion Design\, Duksung Women’s University \nExhibition: Feb. 10-Feb. 23 \n@KCCoC Gallery\n9925 Capitol Dr. Wheeling\, IL. 60090\nInquiry: (847)947-4460 \nFashion illustration\, one of the expression areas of fashion design\, is developing into a new genre of fashion in the fast-changing fashion industry\, breaking away from the existing perception of fashion drawing (illustration). The artist’s activities to popularize the fashion design field and expand the range of expression through the development of convergent expression techniques of fashion illustration show the expansion of fashion artistry and the borderless development of the fashion industry. \nK-Fashion is expressed in various areas. In this work\, the artist expanded the artistic range of globalized K-Fashion and the experimental expression of ideas. In particular\, we want to show how quickly Korean fashion is permeating into global fashion through ‘Saekdong’\, a representative color and pattern of Korean traditional fashion. In addition\, by designing a part of Hangeul\, which is expressed in minimal ‘figure painting’\, along with ‘Saekdong’\, a traditional Korean stripe pattern\, it shows the refined and minimalism of K-Fashion in Korean colors. \nThe artist used hand stitches and hand drawings expressed on Korean traditional fabrics with handcrafted analog techniques\, that shows a convergence of expressions using digital programs together to emphasize formative characteristics. Through this\, a new direction of fashion illustration expression was created and the scope of research related to fashion illustration was expanded. It will also be a special exhibition that expands the realm of K-Fashion design expression suitable for use in the global fashion industry.

SUMMARY:Mutinous Women: How French Convicts Became Founding Mothers of the Gulf Coast

Register in advance here. \nJoin us as Joan DeJean and Jack McCord use maps from the Newberry collection to recreate the European settlement of the vast territory in North America that the French named Louisiana\, and to tell the story of one remarkable woman\, Marie Baron. \nOn February 27\, 1720\, Marie Baron and 95 other female inmates who had been serving time in a notorious Parisian prison were abandoned on an uninhabited island off the Gulf Coast. Most of the women had\, like Marie Baron\, been falsely charged with “public prostitution.” Those who survived their deportation on a ship named La Mutine\, “the Mutinous Woman\,” forged such remarkable lives that their impact on this country continues\, three centuries later. Their lives are recounted in Joan DeJean’s new book\, Mutinous Women: How French Convicts Became Founding Mothers of the Gulf Coast. \nIn Louisiana\, Marie Baron became a person of note and the wife of Jean François Dumont—a mapmaker responsible for many extraordinary maps in the Newberry collection. Dumont recorded events in Louisiana’s history that he himself had not witnessed but that his wife had\, embedding her perspective into his vision of the European settlement of North America. \nSigned copies of Joan DeJean’s book Mutinous Women are available for purchase online from the Newberry Bookshop. \nThis event is cosponsored by the Alliance Française de Chicago.

DESCRIPTION:For twenty years violinist/fiddler and composer Andrew Finn Magill has been pursuing parallel careers in traditional Irish music\, Brazilian choro\, jazz and American fiddle\, the result of many years living abroad and a childhood growing up at The Swannanoa Gathering in Asheville\, North Carolina.  He now takes his folk background and his exploration of  Brazilian music to create “uncharted territory for both the violin and Brazilian music.”(Bandsintown) \nAndrew  has performed with  top-notch  musicians from  grammy-nominees Trio Brasileiro to Rising Appalachia.  He has been featured on NPR\, MTV\, Avianca in-flight entertainment\, is a Fulbright Fellow\, 2019 North Carolina Arts Council Grant recipient for jazz composition and has over a million Spotify streams. \nHe has been an ambassador of Brazilian violin ever since and has founded many Brazilian music groups including O Finno\, Violino no Choro\, Brazilian Strings Trio (with fellow American violinist Ted Falcon and Brazilian guitarist Nando Duarte) and Canta\, Violino! the album of which was released on Ropeadope Records in 2018.

SUMMARY:UNITY\, Maggie Wong Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibit:\nThe Spotlight Series at the Chinese American Museum of Chicago is pleased to present UNITY\, Maggie Wong’s first solo exhibition in Chicago. \nThrough various manipulations of newsprint via sculptural and print interventions pulled from the artist’s collection of Unity Newspaper\, the show depicts a version of childcare that supported revolutionary action\, particularly the publishing of Unity by the League of Revolutionary Struggle\, a radical communist group that emerged in 1978 upon the merger between the August 29th Movement\, a Chicano revolutionary organization\, and I Wor Kuen\, an Asian American revolutionary organization\, both influenced by Mao and followed Marxist-Leninist thought. \nThis system is what raised the artist and countless other now-grown adults that now serves as a point of departure to feel through a movement as a mothering environment. \nAbout the Artist:\nMaggie Wong (b.1988\, Oakland\, CA) is a visual artist attuned to materiality and sculpture’s disciplinary capacity to shape social space. She creates multidisciplinary works that focus on care labor\, sentimentality\, and collectivity. As a teacher. Maggie is interested in the interplay between informal and experiential education amidst formal art ecologies. She holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). She is currently the Educator-in-Residence at the Luminary\, and lecturer at SAIC. Her work has been shown at Mana Contemporary Chicago\, Comfort Station\, Annas Projects\, take care (LA)\, Temple Contemporary\, YBCA\, and 99cent Plus\, and has been written about in ArtForum and Sixty Inches from Center. DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate La Candelaria Day with us!!!\nFood and Art Workshops!\nWe are waiting for you this February 3 from 4 to 6 p.m.\n\n\nIn 2017\, parent leaders from 4 local schools\, (Kanoon Elementary Magnet\, Saucedo Scholastic Academy\, Spry Elementary Community and Hammond Elementary)\, came to us for support on recreating the Traditional Mexican Winter Celebrations in our community. The idea was to provide the families in the community a space where these annual celebrations can be experienced and passed on to their children. These celebrations are focused on gathering families to sing\, walk\, dance\, perform\, make and break pinatas\, provide art activities and create a space for parents to share their stories from their childhood with their children\, family\, and friends.\nThese celebrations begin with the “Posada” in December\, followed by “La Rosca de Reyes” in January\, and close off on “El Dia de La Candelaria” in February. The first posada was such a great success\, with over 300 residents attending each event\, we knew we had to continue these celebrations.\nWe are proud and excited to announce in collaboration with parent leaders from Kanoon Elementary Magnet School\, Saucedo Scholastic Academy\, Spry Elementary Community School\, and Hammond Elementary School we will be hosting our 5th annual series of traditional Mexican events:\n-La POSADA NAVIDEÑA will be: Thursday\, December 22nd 2022 from 4p – 7p at OPEN Center for the Arts\n-LA ROSCA DE REYES will be: Friday\, January 6th 2022 from 4p-6p at OPEN Center for the Arts\n-EL DIA DE LA CANDELARIA will be on Friday\, February 3rd 2022 from 4p-6p at OPEN Center for the Arts\nThere will be La Posada\, Los Peregrinos\, Los Villancicos\, Los Aguinaldos\, Las Piñatas\, Los Tamales\, Los Buñuelos\, La Rosca\, Los Monito\, El Chocolate\, El Pozole\, El Champurrado\, El Ponche\, La Fruta\, La Musica\, Los Talleres de Arte y Los Premios. Advance registration required. \nIn-Person Registration \nLivestream Registration \nJoin us for a conversation with historians Tara Zahra and Kevin Boyle about Dr. Zahra’s new book\, Against the World: Anti-Globalism and Mass Politics Between the World Wars. They will discuss how nationalism\, rather than internationalism\, came to ensnare world politics in the early twentieth century. \nBefore World War I\, enthusiasm for a borderless world seemed to be gaining traction. And yet a backlash against globalization was growing. As the war progressed\, air escaped from the globalist balloon in the United States and across Europe\, where war and disease led to mass societal upheaval. \nAgainst the World will be available for purchase in the Newberry Bookshop\, as will Dr. Boyle’s recent book\, The Shattering: America in the 1960s. Both authors will sign books after the program.

The movie has won numerous awards in Sweden. Britta Marakatt-Labba is part in “Arctic Highways” on display in the main gallery. It is in Swedish and Sami with English subtitles. \nAbout Historja:\nBefore being the title of Thomas Jackson’s documentary\, Historjá is the name that Swedish artist Britta Marakatt-Labba gave to her 24-meter-long tapestry in which she describes the fights of the Sámi culture\, to which she belongs\, for the acknowledgment of their identity and history. Leitmotifs\, images\, reminiscences and values of a native people who was settled in the northern part of Fennoscandia – along the borders between Norway\, Sweden\, Finland\, and Russia – are at the core of one of the world’s leading Swedish artists\, who works almost exclusively with needle and thread\, as well as of the film dedicated to her. The director follows her work and thought regarding major contemporary issues\, in the first place climate change and the fight for the right of ethnic minorities. DESCRIPTION:This winter the CAC will be transforming our galleries into a temporary cineplex and welcoming the New York City-based Architecture & Design Film Festival. The line-up includes 15 feature films and more than a dozen free film shorts from all across the world\, each sharing a unique story of innovation and sustainability in architecture\, design and fashion. Come join us for this festive celebration for the design-minded. From creative explorations of fascinating architects like Winy Maas and Geoffrey Bawa\, to celebrations in artmaking from Marimekko to street art\, to the behind-the-scenes drama in everything from contemporary design competitions to community preservation movements\, there is something on view for most everyone. \n15 stories of innovation and sustainability in architecture\, design and fashion. Hosted by the Architecture and Design Film Fest in partnership with the CAC\, all showings will be at the Chicago Architecture Center\, 111 E Wacker Drive. \nTickets are $20/film or $15 for CAC Members. Your ticket includes a single film showing\, access to view all ADFF Short Films before or after your movie time\, and headphone rental as needed. A reception with food and a glass of wine starts at 1800 and “Crazy About You” by Director Felipe Martinez will begin at 1900. \nLucas and Simón\, friends who work in a creative agency in Bogotá\, throw a party as a favor for their boss\, Johana. There\, Lucas meets Lina\, Johana’s paisa cousin who travels to Bogotá to get a visa and study fashion design in the United States. \nMadly in love\, Lucas travels to Medellín to try to conquer Lina\, where he will realize that before conquering her\, he will have to conquer her paisa family. \nLucas y Simón\, amigos que trabajan en una agencia creativa en Bogotá\, hacen una fiesta como un favor a su jefa\, Johana. Allí\, Lucas conoce a Lina\, la prima paisa de Johana que viaja a Bogotá para sacar la visa e irse a estudiar diseño de modas en Estados Unidos. \nLocamente enamorado\, Lucas viaja a Medellín para tratar de conquistar a Lina\, donde se dará cuenta que antes que conquistarla a ella\, tendrá que conquistar a su familia paisa.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: Arctic Highways
DESCRIPTION:After some delays we are excited to finally open “Arctic Highways.”\nAdmission to see the exhibit is free between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. \nThis exhibit discusses the exploitation of Indigenous land and how imposed borders of nation-states have erased the natural land borders used by Indigenous peoples. Nine Sami artists and three Indigenous artists from Canada and the United States want to use this exhibit to start a dialogue\, raise questions\, and establish waypoints between their culture and ours. This exhibit takes us on a journey through an Arctic highway of culture and life\, stretching from the past into the future.

SUMMARY:The Negro Motorist Green Book
DESCRIPTION:“The Negro Motorist Green Book” guided Black Americans to thousands of businesses for over thirty years. When the first “Green Book” was published\, the American road was a metaphor for freedom: freedom to change your present situation\, determine your destiny\, and travel. Yet\, in 20th-century America\, this same road was a dangerous place for Black travelers. The land was divided by segregation — through policy and through custom. For Black people\, the prejudice was severe: a systematic effort to deny their basic human rights. In an era of Jim Crow laws and “sundown towns\,” communities that explicitly prohibited Black travelers from staying overnight\, the “Green Book” offered critical\, life-saving information and sanctuary. \nNow\, through The Negro Motorist Green Book\, visitors will explore film\, photographs\, interactives\, and oral histories from travelers and “Green Book” business owners; compare “Green Book” sites then and now; and appreciate historical objects from the Smithsonian and from a variety of “Green Book” sites. The exhibition includes artifacts from business signs and postcards to historic footage\, images\, and firsthand accounts that illustrate not just the apprehension felt by Black travelers\, but also the resilience\, innovation\, and elegance of people choosing to live a full American existence. \nDeveloped by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) in collaboration with award-winning author\, photographer\, and cultural documentarian\, Candacy Taylor\, Green Book offers an immersive look at the historic reality of travel for Black Americans and how the guide served as an indispensable resource for the rise of the Black leisure class in the United States. The exhibition highlights destinations created by Black Americans and strategies that affirmed their humanity\, their worth\, their light\, and their lives – and how it was done with ingenuity\, community\, and with help from Victor Green and his travel guide: “The Negro Motorist Green Book.”
