DESCRIPTION:Enjoy gentle indoor Yoga classes at DANK-Haus. The class will be taught primarily in German\, with the intro and outro in English. Those with little or no German experience are encouraged to come and follow along! \nIn this class we will be flowing from pose to pose and linking movement with breath. We will combine elements of Hatha and Yin-Yoga as well as Meditation. \nHatha Yoga focuses on postures that practice to align\, strengthen\, and promote flexibility in the body. \nYin poses are passive stretches held for minutes at a time\, preparing the body for stillness by releasing deep-rooted tension. \nBreathing techniques and meditation are also integrated. \nAll Yoga postures will be introduced through step-by-step verbal description and demonstration. \nAll levels- BEGINNERS WELCOME! \nThis class requires a minimum of 5 pre-registered students to run. \nMinimum 5 students required for class to run

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Ballpark
DESCRIPTION:What can Chicago’s ballparks tell us about the evolution of our city? Pulitzer Prize winning architecture critic Paul Goldberger will discuss the connection between American cities and America’s favorite pastime. \nThis program is $15 to attend and $7 for CAC Members. \nIn a discussion of his 2019 book Ballpark: Baseball in the American City\, Goldberger offers some valuable context about how baseball and ballparks have shaped our cities\, both physically and psychologically. He tracks the evolution of baseball’s tastes in stadium location and design and why they matter. He explores how the architecture of ballparks\, reflects how we view our cities and the game and how the two relate to each other. \nA book signing will take place at the conclusion of the program. Books will be available at the CAC design store. \nAUTHOR: PAUL GOLDBERGER\n \nPaul Goldberger\, a contributing editor at Vanity Fair\, began his career at The New York Times\, where he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism for his writing on architecture. Later\, and for 15 years\, he was architecture critic for The New Yorker. He is the author of many books\, most recently Ballpark: Baseball in the American City (May\, 2019). Goldberger teaches at the New School and lectures widely around the country on architecture\, design\, historic preservation\, and cities.

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Earth Day and Earth Week\, join us for an in-person watch party of the film Powerlands. A limited number of tickets will be available for this screening on April 23 at 5:00 p.m.\, followed by a discussion at 6:15pm via zoom with filmmaker Ivey Camille Manybeads Tso. The watch party will feature light snacks and refreshments at the Mitchell Museum. \nPowerlands \nA young Navajo filmmaker investigates displacement of Indigenous people and devastation of the environment caused by the same chemical companies that have exploited the land where she was born. On this personal and political journey she learns from Indigenous activists across three continents. Website: https://powerlands.org/ \nFilmmaker: \nIvey-Camille Manybeads Tso – Director Ivey Camille Manybeads Tso is an award-winning queer Navajo filmmaker. She was a fellow with the Firelight Media Documentary Filmmaker Lab\, and the 4th World Indigenous Media Lab. She started making films at the age of 9\, through the Native youth media project Outta Your Backpack Media. At the age of 13 she made the award-winning fiction film In the Footsteps of Yellow Woman\, based in the true story of her great-great-great grandmother Yellow Woman\, who lived through the Navajo Long Walk of 1864-1868. The film screened in over 90 film festivals internationally and won 11 awards. Ivey Camille continued to refine her filmmaking craft with a full scholarship to Idyllwild Arts Academy in California. She later returned home to work on films in her community of Navajo Nation. At the age of 19\, Ivey Camille began work on Powerlands\, her first feature. Powerlands has screened internationally and won several festival awards including the The 2022 Rigoberta Menchú Grand Prize. \nDirectors Statement \nMy grandmother taught me how to stand on the frontlines. She taught me about the ways that my ancestors have resisted displacement since colonial settlers came here. When thinking about how to tell the stories in this film\, I think first about the storytelling traditions I have learned from elders in my community. That is why this story is told through the stories\, voices\, and languages of Indigenous women. \nI started making films at the age of nine\, through the Native youth media project Outta Your Backpack Media. At the age of 13\, I directed In the Footsteps of Yellow Woman\, based in the true story of my great-great-great grandmother Yellow Woman\, who lived through the Navajo Long Walk of 1864- 1868. At the age of 19\, I started Powerlands\, which took six years to film and edit. \nFor too long\, others have been telling our stories. As an Indigenous filmmaker\, I have seen the ways in which our stories are co-opted and stolen. This film is an intervention\, a chance for our stories to be told by us\, in our own languages. \nAll proceeds will support our Indigenous Medicine and Traditional Food Gardens. DESCRIPTION:Join the Haitian American Museum of Chicago (HAMOC) in its second A Passport to Haiti event. \nA Passport to Haiti: An Immersive Cultural Workshop Series is a four-part program happening at HAMOC from March – June 2023. Each month will feature a different part of Haitian culture. \nIn April\, we will highlight Haitian Vodou. During the event\, you will learn about veves through a new art installation at HAMOC and an artist talk with Dr. Petrouchka Moïse\, watch and engage with dance\, movement and music with Lēnablou\, Linda Isabelle Francois Obas\, and Julio Cesar Montaño\, and listen to a panel discussion on how Vodou continues to make a positive influence in culture\, moderated by Dr. Mario LaMothe. This event is in collaboration with five talented artists\, scholars and professors from the Midwest\, Haiti and Guadeloupe\, including: \nDr. Petrouchka Moïse \nDr. Moise is an Assistant Professor and Cultural & Community-based Digital Curator at Grinnell College Libraries\, artist\, and scholar that focuses on cultures in the Carribean. \nLēnablou \nLēnablou is a dancer\, choreographer and doctor in dance anthropology that has dedicated her career to Gwoka\, the traditional Guadeloupean dance\, that has long inspired her choreographic writing. \nLinda Isabelle Francois Obas \nLinda Isabelle Francois Obas is a Haitian Artist\, Choreographer\, Dancer\, whose Contemporary Signature\, is essentially sourced in Haitian Vodou Culture. \nDr. Mario LaMothe \nDr. LaMothe is a cultural anthropologist at the University of Chicago at Illinois\, where he teaches courses on Afro Caribbean religious practices and culture. DESCRIPTION:Writing Historical Fiction by Maria Bouroncle \nMaria is a Swedish author. An economist by profession\, she spent over 25 years in the field of international development before publishing her first novel in 2018. It Came to Me on a Whim has been translated into several languages and is currently used on the Scandinavian Crime Literature course at UCLA. She lives in Washington\, DC. \nMaria’s book tells the story of her great-aunt who killed her three children at the age of twenty-seven in 1929. Through exhaustive research\, she has strived to shed light on what led up to this tragedy\, which had been a tightly guarded family secret for over seventy years. \nAt the event\, Maria will also show film director Carl Eneroth’s short documentary ”The Child Murderess in Vesene”\, based on her book. It was the winner of ”Best Short Documentary” in London\, New Jersey and Miami in 2021. \nCost is free for Swedish American Genealogical Society members; $10 for non-members to participate (use PayPal button below). He is the author of 25 books for both adults and young readers. His works include novels\, non-fiction\, and poetry. His topics encompass a wide scope from inner psychological tensions to environmental issues. Several of his books have been translated into English as well as other languages. He is also a successful publisher and since 2013\, he has been serving as the chair of the Association of Czech Booksellers and Publishers.
